As you enter through door 50 you buy a medkit, flashlight, and flash beacon before going to grab the keycard to proceed to the next room. As you’re walking towards the keycard, you stop dead in your tracks as you hear something…or someone shuffling around behind the table. You stare for a few seconds before you turn around to see…. A child?
It seems to notice you, staring dead at you as you make eye contact. It then takes out a little box filled with trinkets and hold it out to you.
“..Want one?”

All About the Goblins
Tumblr media
In the whimsical yet slightly neurotic world that is my Tumblr, I'm embarking on a series most peculiar, one that delves into the lives, loves, and lamentable laundry habits of goblins. Yes, goblins - those misunderstood, often malodorous denizens of places we'd rather not visit after dark (or even in broad daylight, to be perfectly honest).
Each post will be a foray into the goblin psyche, which is as convoluted as a maze designed by a particularly sadistic architect with a penchant for Escher prints and Kafka novels. We'll explore the intricacies of goblin social etiquette, which primarily involves not eating one's dinner guest, and the complexities of their economy, which is largely based on the barter system, shiny objects, and the occasional mildly cursed artifact.
Expect tales of goblin romance, as fraught and passionate as any Shakespearean drama, but with more warts and a significantly higher risk of accidental poisoning. We'll meet goblins who are poets, philosophers (albeit of a rather gloomy disposition), and even a few who fancy themselves as chefs, though their definition of 'haute cuisine' might make the average person opt for a prolonged fast.
So, grab your metaphorical torch and pitchfork (or actual ones, if you're feeling particularly adventurous) and join me on this journey. It promises to be erratic, occasionally eerie, and possibly educational, but I guarantee it will at least be more entertaining than watching paint dry - unless it's goblin paint, which has a tendency to scream as it dries. Stay tuned, dear reader, for our first foray into the world of goblins - creatures who remind us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and sometimes the beholder just needs a good optometrist.

Interaction Satisfaction Winners!
Congratulations to our winners this week: @hanavesinauttija with Unified Resistence, @hypexion with Skemfar's Scorn, and @izzet-always-r-versus-u with Mistfire Trickery!
~
Unified Resilience
Well, you caught me, I had to check if that was an existing ability or not. First off, the first line is good. Three mana for the effect seems right (heroic intervention is an outlier IMO), but it still wants a bit more of a kick, and you have that here. Indestructible turns it into a more expensive heroic, but then the trample is really what puts it into overdrive. Playing this in response to a removal spell on attacks seems like it would feel incredible. It also feels like it feeds into what this type of deck wants to be doing. If you’re playing a bunch of different creature types in a green deck, they’re probably all going to be pretty big, so you really want some trample to push through. I appreciate the non-human clause to prevent it from counting changelings, and while that matches with the Ikoria non-human mutate text, it does feel like a strange exclusion otherwise. Are humans not allowed to form coalitions? Or maybe that’s the point. A specifically non-human deck might be what you were going for. Regardless, this is a solid piece of interaction as a slightly worse but sometimes better heroic intervention, which I think is exactly what we need.
-
Skemfar's Scorn
This is just the type of card I wanted to see this contest. Two color sorcery speed removal is a big ask in commander, but the payoff here seems great. Golgari elves is a very popular archetype, but it’s support is just limited enough to feel like it still needs some help, and this card would do it. The idea of a build-your-own casualties of war is great, and the scalability of it means you can fire it off when you need it, which means it isn’t just a more restrictive version. Tapping elves both plays into and against elf decks, since they often tap for mana, so this means they can’t tap for mana to escalate and tap to escalate itself, but it also means elf decks might be prepared to tap elves anyway. And let's not ignore the simplicity of the base mode. It’s interaction in its purest form: destroy target something. A great entry and exactly what I was looking for.
-
Mistfire Trickery
So it’s a break open or a cyber-conversion. I like it! While you could play this in any deck, and I think some people would, it’s clearly got a better home in a deck with a lot of face-down creatures. It’s even an instant, which allows you to do some sneaky morph effects like flipping something for cheap after blocks. I might have argued it was too easy before, but considering that we just got expose the culprit, a 3 mana version is probably fine, with that extra mana (and the higher power level of commander) warranting the removal-y mode. The templating and implied setting are also well-done. Altogether very impressive.
~
And there you go! Thank you everyone who entered. Runners-up will be out shortly, and commentary not too long after that. It's been a while since I've run one of these, but it seemed to go alright, so thank you everyone!

Analyzing Invention: Jan-April 2024
The first four months of 2024 have come and gone. Along with wind, snow, solar eclipses and rain, there have been 16 challenges with the Inventor's Fair, a Magic: the Gathering card design contest blog here on Tumblr.
For the uninitiated, each week, a design challenge is announced on the blog and members of the community create cards meeting the design specifications. At the end of the week, a few winners and runner-ups are selected from the submission.
Similar to what I did at the end of last year, let's take a look at some of the trends so far this year - January through April.
Tumblr media
Art. Katerina of Myra's Marvels. Illustrated by Gaboleps
The Contests
So far, there have been 16 contests over 17 weeks, with one off-week for a call for new judges from the community. In Week 6, spooky-bard moved from contestant to judge and had their first time in the judgement seat with a contest all about Nothing.
There have been 78 distinct participants, with 3 participants submitting a card each contest thus far. On average, there have been 21 participants per contest, with the highest being Week 3 - For the Spikes! (28 participants) and the lowest being a tie between Week 7 - My Better Half and Week 11 - War Never* Changes (16 participants).
A big shout-out to the IF team for their work in planning and judging each week's contest: @abelzumi, @follower-of-liliana, @gollumni, @loreholdlesbian, Mr. ShinyObject, and @spooky-bard!
Speaking of the contests...
The Submissions
Over the 16 contests, there have already been 350 unique submissions. And with some contests having multiple cards per submission, that results in 377 cards, enough for a draftable cube.
Let's look at some of the stats behind these cards, starting with Card Type.
Tumblr media
Fig. 1 - Bar graph of card submissions by card types. Artifact, 51. Battle, 16. Creature, 205. Enchantment, 41. Instant, 30. Land, 2. Planeswalker, 1. Sorcery, 48. Other, 0.
By far, the most popular card type to design are Creatures, with a fair few of them also falling into the Artifact and Enchantment buckets. Planeswalkers have seen the least amount of love, with only one having been in the contest thus far: Leucina of Dark Desire by @mudthing in the For the Spikes! contest of Week 3.
For color, I've decided to stick with the overall Color Identity of the cards created, rather than those represented in the mana cost. I've also just separated the submissions by single colors; parsing them into pairs, wedges, and shards would be possible, but a little more convoluted.
Tumblr media
Fig. 2 - Donut graph of card submissions by color identity. White, 103. Blue, 99. Black, 117. Red, 100. Green, 80. Colorless, 20.
Black colored card submissions are slightly edging out white, red and blue with 22.5% of submissions being at least partial black. This is especially interesting as one contest, All the Colors of the -1/-1 Counter in Week 15, was explicitly to NOT have any black cards.
Of the five main colors, green is lagging behind with only 15.4% of card submissions being at least partial green. Sounds like we are in need of some lichens and tigers and bears ...
Tumblr media
Image - George Takei, Oh My
For Mana Value (MV), there is a similar bell curve to what we saw last year.
MV 0: 7 cards
MV 1: 24 cards
MV 2: 76 cards
MV 3: 116 cards
MV 4: 83 cards
MV 5: 37 cards
MV 6: 14 cards
MV 7+: 10 cards
Cards at MV 3 are the most popular to design, with MV 4 and MV 2 close behind. Seeing these numbers, it really does make it seem like there could be a draftable cube, albeit a wonky one with some crazy drafting strategies.
Finally, let's jump into Rarity.
Tumblr media
Fig. 3 - Donut graph of card submissions by rarity. Common, 51. Uncommon, 140. Rare, 151. Mythic Rare, 24.
At around 40% for each, Rare and Uncommon are the card rarities most often designed. This is right in the sweet spot for a decent amount of complexity, really allowing designers to show off their design skills.
Winners and Runner-Ups
Starting in this section, we have to give a shout-out to the 31 card designers who have had cards selected as either a Winner or Runner-Up in the contests. In particular, put your hands together for the top 3 entrants so far this year:
@izzet-always-r-versus-u: 10 submissions selected
@nine-effing-hells: 8 submissions selected
@horsecrash: 7 submissions selected
Data-wise, we see some similar patterns with what has been submitted. Creatures are crushing it (67 entries), MV 3 is ahead (32 entries), and Uncommons and Rares are close (although Uncommon is slightly ahead with 41 entries to Rare's 38).
But a shake-up between submissions and selections is in the works with Color Identity.
Tumblr media
Fig. 4 - Donut graph of winner and runner-up card selections by color identity. White, 21. Blue, 33. Black, 30. Red, 25. Green, 22. Colorless, 3.
In a big surprise, Blue jumps to the front of the pack, followed closely by Black. Red sits in third place, with Green and White close behind (and to each other). In my analysis last year, Red was the color to beat, but it looks like Blue's allure of card draw, bounce effects and flying creatures has wowed the judges this time around.
But really, the biggest take-away is that we have a community of wonderful card designers and judges who give us a little something to look forward every week. Thank you everyone for your hard work! There will be another data analysis at the end of August.
And I'll see you in the weekly submissions!

Update on that weave from last night... its now (almost) a pendant. Once it's dont being woven, it will get a patina, scrub down with steel wool, then tumbled for awhile, then will have a layer of jewelry polish applied, and will get a final cleaning and buffing before going to it's photoshoot and then... finally.... to my shop. Its a long journey but totally worth it! . . . . . #handmadejewelry #copperwireweave #allbymyself #selfemployedartist #roycroftcampus #eastaurora #lovecopper #copperrocks #tinyweaving #supportartists #weworkhard #womenownedbusiness #gothicjewelry #renaissancejewelry #letsgetitdone #practicemakesperfect #noxcorvum #shinyobject #frommystudio #showyourwork (at Roycroft Campus) https://www.instagram.com/p/CErbDWABKMW/?igshid=15hakiiic5q54

“Long Con” Two weeks of partisan rhetoric and punditry in the form of both the DNC and the RNC has taken a lot air time while in the midst of it all the body count of black lives multiplies on our streets. Jacob Blake’s murder is just the latest trauma and the protesters of that killed by a 17 year old @realdonaldtrump supporting domestic-terrorist walks away free and is praised by the president and the right for maintaining “law and order.” Even the Angel of Death is not so zealous when it comes to his task. But speeches and delegates! For shame. Personally I’ve struggled the last two weeks with the weight of it all and maintaining this little weekly project especially as I begin grad school. I won’t be abandoning this completely, but I will be letting myself off the hook of the rigidity of the weekly collage schedule. While this chapter is ending, I am continuing to commit to social and active justice through art and I’m excited to see where my education will take my practice! 📺 🩸 📺 🩸 📺 🩸 📺 🩸 📺 🩸 📺 🩸 📺 🩸 #dnc #rnc #policebrutality #blmprotest #collage #spin #medianarrative #overtonwindow #distraction #talkingpoint #thoughtsandprayers #digitalcollage #zoomconvention2020 #letmeentertainyou #showmustgoon #illustration #editorialillustration #bodyofevidence #pleaseclap #shinyobject #twopartiesnochoice #actionsnotwords #adineroillustration https://www.instagram.com/p/CEnJx6fgP51/?igshid=46gt90qx8qn8

Interaction Satisfaction
Tumblr media
A while ago, I was listening to the EDHRec podcast, and they mentioned a very weird piece of data: for Silumgar, the Drifting Death, a blue-black dragon deck, the card silumgar's scorn was more commonly played (at the time) than the original Counterspell. The latter is a UU hard counterspell, and the former is UU but only counters the spell if they pay one mana or they control a dragon. So why are people playing a strictly worse card?
Because it says dragon on it.
People love playing cards that fit with their deck, even if strictly better versions exist. This can be a great way to encourage players to play cards that they might not play otherwise. The type of player who loves playing big, powerful dragons might not care about putting some random two mana counterspell in the deck, even if it might be strategically wise. But this one says dragon on it.
This week's challenge: Design a piece of interaction (removal, protection, etc.) that appeals to a certain kind of commander deck.
Interaction is a broad term, but usually means something that doesn't add to the board, but responds to actions of others. Basically, any card that would be useless if you had no opponents.
Fitting a certain deck means that the card is geared towards certain strategies. Any deck can play Swords to Plowshares, but only an artifact deck should play Dispatch.
This contest assumes the cards will be in some sort of commander deck.
The best kind of card for this contest would be one that specifically shores up weaknesses of the deck in question. A go-wide deck needs protection from things that kill multiple creatures at once, so Clever Concealment is perfect.
Make sure to be careful about going "all in" on the theme. Mutant's Prey may seem great in a counter-centric deck, but if you're deck is having trouble going off, then it's a dead card. Dire Tactics is rough if you don't have a human, but at least you can still cast it to get rid of an Elesh Norn so you can start playing humans again.
Good luck everyone!
