Bee Stings and Butterfly Kisses || SV5
Pairing: Sebastian Vettel x wife!reader Summary: Your husband takes nesting to a whole new level with the paradise he’s found to start his family. Warnings: established relationship, pregnant!reader, fluffiness WC: 1.4k
Tumblr media
The property Sebastian had chosen to raise his children upon was everything you could have dreamt of and more. There were rolling meadows full of fragrant flowers, forests of conifers and evergreens, and even a lake with an abundance of trout. The house he had designed was built using recycled material and was sustainable to run with the dozens of solar panels on the roof. He had truly future proofed everything to live a life as environmentally friendly as possible.
“Did you know honey is the only food that doesn’t spoil if you store it properly?” Sebastian barely looked up from the old set of drawers he was upcycling into an apiary. “There were pots of honey found in ancient tombs in Egypt, around 3000 years old.”
“I still don't see why we need bees at our home.”
“Because, my love,” he said as he placed his hammer down and pulled you into his arms, “this is our future we are building. Without bees there’s no pollination, with no pollination there’s no flowers, or fruit and vegetables.” His hand splayed across your swollen belly, feeling his son’s kicks against his palm with a smile. “It’s our responsibility to protect our future.”
Tumblr media
The outdoor sofa where you were reading was a current favourite place of yours. It was tranquil and warm and allowed you to get off your feet for a little bit while your husband pottered around in the garden. With only a few weeks to your due date everything ached from your neck to your ankles so you kicked your feet up and listened to the birdsong.
The hiss of pain was one you had come to know well recently and it only took a minute for Seb to appear at the edge of the garden, the metal gate squeaking on its rusted hinge. He cupped one hand over his cheek, one eye closed with a wince as he ascended the stairs to the deck.
“You wouldn’t get stung if you used the smoke, love,” you softly reminded him as he took a seat and pulled his hand away. “Oh dear, that’s a big one.”
“We don’t know the long term effect the smoke has on them, it could be poisoning them,” he said as he turned his head so you could use your nails to pull the stinger out without squeezing more toxin into his cheek. “They will recognise me soon and realise I’m not going to hurt them.”
“If you say so.” You loved your husband but you weren’t so sold on the trust building exercise he found himself in. More often than not after going to check the beehive you found yourself in this position, grateful he wasn’t allergic. “How is your queen doing?”
His lips pulled up into a smile and he sat down on the edge of the seat, pulling your feet onto his lap and massaging your swollen ankles. “You tell me, my sweet, how are you doing?”
Emotions swelled in your chest and you cursed as he laughed, leaning closer to wipe away the tear that escaped. “Damn these hormones. You should really stop being so nice so my poor tear ducts can have a break. Can’t you just be a jerk?” His laugh grew and with it the kicks increased. “Yes, yes, daddy’s laughing at me.”
“I would never laugh at your mother,” he chuckled, lifting your shirt to press his lips to your belly. Stretch marks littered the skin and you dared not to think about the other changes that you couldn’t see below the swell, but he still made you feel beautiful. “Everything she is going through is my fault.”
“That’s right,” you agreed with a smile. “Daddy spent a lot of time romancing and seducing me, and now here you are.”
Seb looked up, his long hair hanging in naturally soft waves around his face. “How could I not? You were the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I could hardly concentrate on the race after seeing you.”
“It couldn't have affected you too much,” you said as you tucked his hair behind his ear, “you still won.”
“I had to make a good impression somehow, since I could barely speak a word when we were introduced,” he admitted as he looked out over the garden he tendered.
You followed his gaze knowing he was going to be a great father considering the care he gave to the garden, and you. “It was your eyes I fell for anyway, they looked sweet and kind.”
The rows of plants were just flowering and you traced them to see the little bursts of yellows that all too soon would become bright red ripe tomatoes. Next were the beans, too many varieties to count, all climbing the trellis Seb had made from the wood of fallen trees in the forest. Further beyond were your favourites, the bushes that were brimming with berries of every flavour. Each morning you would amble your way to them with Seb and a bowl, pointing out the juiciest looking berries for him to pick for your smoothie.
Patting his good cheek, you shuffled to sit up and swing your legs off the couch.
“Where are you going?”
With a groan you pulled yourself to your feet and rubbed the straining skin at your sides. “To get some ice to stop that swelling,” you said as you pointed to his face. “You need to be able to see properly if you are thinking about getting back in a race car this weekend.”
“I can get it, you rest.” He followed you into the house even after catching the roll of your eyes and watched you struggle to bend down to reach the ice tray at the bottom of the freezer. Unable to stop himself, his hands caught your waist and straightened you up before he grabbed the tray. “I don’t want you hurting yourself,” he said with a kiss to your temple.
“I said the same thing, but you still went and got stung.”
“But that’s because I have you to kiss me better.”
You smiled at the softness in his tone and gave him the gentlest of kisses to his swollen cheek, barely the touch of a butterfly's wing. “There, is that better?”
“Yes, I don’t even need this anymore,” he said as he turned to put the tray away until you stopped him with an amused look.
“Nurburgring,” you reminded him, grabbing a tea towel to wrap the ice cubes in.
He had been excited since he got the call from Christian Horner to drive the historic track, and in a car modified to run on eco-friendly fuel no less. He was not going to do anything to miss the opportunity to return to the racetrack, even though he enjoyed retirement and the quiet life he had built in the rural settlement. So, he quietly accepted the ice pack and carefully pressed it to his cheek.
“It’s a dangerous track, Seb,” you murmured as you took over holding it, cradling his other cheek with your palm. “Please be safe and come home in one piece.”
His hands came to rest on your stomach, nearly covering it all as he splayed his fingers apart. “Of course, my love. And you need to stay in one piece until I get home.”
You giggled and felt the strong kick responding to his voice. “I have a feeling your son will take his time. Would you resort to one of those dreadful planes if he decides to come early?”
His lips twitched in amusement, used to your jibing over the consciousness of his carbon footprint. “I could probably drive home faster, with a few speeding tickets along the way, but I might be able to lower myself to boarding a plane for him.”
“Ah, that’s a father’s love,” you giggled. “He doesn’t even know what a sacrifice that would be.”
Sebastian lowered the ice pack so he could dip his head and kiss you. “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for the two of you.”
“Except get rid of the bees.”
His lips curled against yours in a smile you felt. “Except that.”

A strange find from the local recycle shop, an oddly seal-like plane with a dog pilot who can sit inside! Made by Clifford B McGuire, who upon searching seem to make a lot of pilot/aviator animals.
Process of cleaning them up below...
The sealplane caught my eye in the big toy bin first! A friend looked it up and discovered it’s meant to come with a pilot, who I found hiding way at the bottom of the bin. They made me laugh so I had to save them, either for me or for somebody.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sealplane had a couple of stains on its wings and body, while the pilot had a very stained shirt and torn tie, and was just a bit scruffy looking. Apparently the sealplane is supposed to have a couple of engines under the wings too, oh well! Guess it just glides now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First I unpicked all of pilot dog's clothes to clean and fix separately! The different materials would need cleaning different ways, especially felt which doesn’t wash well.
Tumblr media
To help the hat hold its circular shape better, I turned it inside out and trimmed down the edge of the seam on the inside, then added a circle of foam to help keep it flat.
I decided not to wash this part, I just trimmed off the bobbly and tufty areas on the surface of the felt to neaten it up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dog had a hole in his neck so I stitched that up too. Actually I stitched all the way around his neck just for some extra strength.
Tumblr media
Wash time! Using some warm water and a little dish soap, I gently scrubbed the sealplane's yellow spots without soaking it entirely, then brushed clear water through to rinse. I avoided scrubbing the felt pieces.
Dog actually wasn't too dirty under the clothes! I just gave him a little bit of cleaning, mainly on the light areas.
Tumblr media
Since the shirt looked like normal shirt material, I tried soaking it in normal shirt stain remover! It worked really well! (Also it looked cool in the cup because a rainbow was shining through it while it fizzed!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the parts hung on the line to dry. Flying! Dog pilot must have pressed the eject button.
Tumblr media
Once dried, I stitched the clothes back on to the pilot. I used the remaining piece of his tie as a template to cut out two new pieces of black felt which tie together.
Tumblr media
Sealplane’s printed lettering was lifting up in a few spots, so I used a teeny tiny dot of superglue on the end of a pin to just dab under the letters and pressed them back down with my nail. I trimmed stray tufts off the felt around them too.
Tumblr media
It would have been nice to touch up the flaked paint on the plane’s zipper too, but I don’t really have the right stuff for that, so I’m calling them done!

hello >-<
so i have this idea
hobie is a punk musician right? what if he kinda like this artist (their work and all) but the artist is a anon so he got no idea who it was but he knows their art style by heart
he would go to art galleries that will feature the artist
he would even go to the extent of buying a print or two
he would also ask for a commission from the artist
but he would do all of it in incognito (he’s like an idol idoling his idol from the fake acc to ask for comms to disguises just to go to the gallery)
little did he know his fav artist/reader is also a big fan of his band
how would they meet??
(sorry if it’s to long or kinda hard to understand, thank youuu have a wonderful day)
•🍓
You have no idea how much I loved this. I kinda projected myself (like I’ve honestly been in all of my hobie fanfics, but bcs I too, am a punk and do art occasionally) my eco-punk tendencies keep showing, and I’m honestly not gonna stop anytime soon (as you can tell from the constant mention of plants in my writing). This took me forever but I’ve been hella busy 😭
I’ll perhaps do a second part of this
WC: 1.2K or something.
Art is Freedom — Hobie x GN!Reader
Tumblr media
"Art is Freedom" was the signature of the anonymous artist Hobie desired to meet. There was something about their art that simply fascinated him. From murals made out with plants, to your standard mural with spray paint. In galleries, this same artist did installations with all sorts of recycled materials. From newspaper, cardboard, paper, sometimes even stuff like aluminium and glass. Others screen printing on recycled fabric and old shirts, and most recently digital art, with the option of buying prints.
What Hobie liked about this artist was how cold and straightforward could they be with their art to express their thoughts and feelings. With a strong commentary on environmentalism. Also very graphic art talking about feminism and domestic violence. He loved the passion put into these pieces, he gawked at the raw energy expiring from the art pieces.
However, tracking them down was particularly hard. They were good at covering up their tracks. Although Hobie knew what that was like, so he started thinking in a similar way this anonymous artist would do. Sometimes feeling guilty for wanting to uncover this artist’s identity, he wouldn’t like it if someone was waiting for him to make a mistake at covering his tracks and found out who he was. But at the same time, he genuinely wanted to meet this person, have a talk with them, sure that Spider-Man and this artist would get along very well.
One fortuitous day, at the art gallery Hobie liked to frequent, there was a new exposition. This one was a photography show. It was the first time this artist showcased pictures. The theme was punk. And most of the photos were from concerts. Spider-Man was even in most of them. Not only was this artist a fan of his band, but from the pictures, Hobie was able to get an idea of who this artist was.
The group of hardcore punks who always showed up to his concerts, art shows, or were wrecking havoc during manifestations, was for the most part the same crowd. Some faces and even names became familiar not only to him but to everyone else.
And you had a face easy to recognise. You had a reputation for always being in the middle of the mosh pit, jamming and jumping like everybody else. However, you were taking pics. Right in the middle of the mosh, you managed to take the best pictures from the stage and the crowd. How did you manage to take those pics while getting out, not only yourself but your camera intact? It was a mystery many people liked to think about.
Hobie had seen you at almost every gig. And he’d seen the magnificent work you did with the photos. However, for the two years he’s been following this anonymous artist, he’d never seen photos. However, for the three or four years you’ve been following his band, he’d seen you in the crowd and seeing your work.
And now standing in front of your exposition, he could clearly identify the peculiar style of the pictures. Those pictures clearly were taken from the depths of a mosh pit. And keeping cameras intact and photos this good of a mosh pit could only be you.
His eyes widened at the realisation. He knew you all along, and had been watching your work from afar for so long. He didn’t personally know you, but he’d seen you around so much to think you were a cool lad, the pins on your jacket were rad, and that you had good taste in music. And of course, he thought you were a talented photographer.
But now that he’d put two and two together, not only were you a magnificent photographer, but an overall artist. The respect and admiration he felt for you duplicated, as he’d thought he was admiring at two different artist while it was actually one and the same.
“Oh! Look at these!” Some people in the gallery said as they neared the pictures and paid close attention to them. “Dude, this pics are sick! Kinda like the ones you always take!”
He diverted his gaze and saw a couple of people leaning closer to take in the details, and a third person wearing a hoodie. Hands hidden in the pouch and hood over their head.
“They’re pretty good,”
Hobie raised an eyebrow as he paced around the gallery, trying to get closer, wondering if it could be you underneath that hoodie.
As he got closer, pretending to glance at the pictures, he saw you from the corner of his eyes and smirked. Your poker face was actually very good, but he could see right through it.
“You think the artist knows how meaningful their art is to others?” Hobie said in a low voice as he glanced at you.
“They better! They’re fucking awesome!” One of your friends said, clueless of what Hobie was trying to do.
“I’m sure they’ve got some idea,” You said meeting Hobie’s stare.
“Well, they sure are my favourite artist, I’ll tell you that…” He said confidently. “I’ve seen you around in gigs, haven’t I?”
“Yeah, probably. I’m always around in gigs…” You said shyly.
“Especially Spider-Man! You love that guy!” One of your friends said, as you felt your cheeks warming up slightly.
“Do you?” Hobie asked.
“His style is very unique. And he’s amazing. He’s been a huge inspiration for me,” reluctantly, you admitted.
“Really? That’s cool. I’m Hobie,” His smirk flashed across his face with a slight arrogant yet full of charm.
“Nice meeting you,” You introduced yourself to him, telling him your name. “I like your style…” You said, pulling one of your hands out of the pouch of your hoodie and pointed at his pins.
“Thanks,” He said, repeating your name. “So, you said Spider-Man was an inspiration…”
“I do art sometimes,” You shrugged. “I wish I could live off of it but, it’s hard,”
“The world is so unkind to artist, unless you decide to sell yourself like a whore,”
You looked at Hobie, thinking there was something strangely familiar and yet refreshing of him. He was tall, he was skinny, but definitely looked like the guy you wouldn’t want to get in a fight with. And yet, he didn’t look all that intimidating. In fact, you felt curious.
“Yeah, pretty much…” You agreed.
“Wanna go for a beer sometime?”
It was hard for you not to smirk as you looked away. Your friends now further away, having read the room and left you alone with Hobie.
“Excuse me?” You armed yourself with courage to look back at him and meet his stare, his eyes a lighter shade of brown compared to the rest of his skin. He was gorgeous, you thought.
“You seem like a pretty interesting person, I’d like to know you better and know a bit more about the art you make, if that’s okay of course…” He shrugged, nonchalantly, able to read your slightly shy and awkward demeanour.
“Do I know you?” You asked.
Hobie chuckled softly. Knowing exactly what you meant, wondering if you were able to somehow relate him to Spider-Man already.
“Yeah, I introduced myself two minutes ago,” he teased, as you chuckled and rolled your eyes playfully.
“No—I me-mean yeah…” You giggled “But…Before that?”
Hobie shrugged.
“Why you ask?”
“I don’t know…” You sighed looking at him curiously, attentively. “Something about you feels oddly familiar…”
“Perhaps,” He shrugged “who knows, there’s only one way to find out…” He winked.
You smirked.
“Later today? At the Hayfield?” You said, naming your favourite bar, agreeing to his invitation.
“Someone likes artisan beer,” Hobie pointed out with an approving nod.
“Isn’t that the best kind of beer?” This time, you shrugged nonchalantly “Besides, Hayfield supports all the local beer producers and amateurs too”
“Nice. See you then,” Hobie said. “9 works for you?”
“9 it is” You smirked, feeling your chest stirring slightly.
“Nice meeting ya” He said turning around, with a triumphant smirk.
“Nice meeting you too…”

how do I tell these bears that I luv them. I'm baked and emotional. Please let them know with a note or some petting while they sleep. so fluffy
what an incredible first ask to receive on this blog, oh my goodness. this has legit made my morning!
i think the best ways we have to show love to these wonderful creatures is to preserve the land they live on and preserve the salmon run that is the lifeblood of Katmai.
The Katmai Conservancy is a wonderful nonprofit that helps with education, research, preservation, and outreach about Katmai National Park and the things that live there -- from genetic studies on the bear and non-invasive coastal wolf populations to working with local indigenous groups to preserve indigenous knowledge of local plants and their uses. they do so, so much wonderful and wildly important work.
also, they have a merch shop!! i personally own 3 shirts and the fat bear week calendar for 2024, and i love them immensely. they focus on using recycled or otherwise environmentally-friendly materials wherever possible, and since the shop is run by the conservancy itself, all profits go directly to them with no middle man. there's a really cute bear plush that i don't yet own but that i want real bad -- it comes with a sockeye salmon plush and they both have magnets so you can attach the salmon to the bear's mouth!!
also, for bear related cuteness, i'm going to be doing a write up of some katmai bear cam lore soon (you can find the poll for which is first here), and all of the options currently leading are very cute and very sweet stories of bears being incredible, incredible creatures.
again thank you so much for this ask, it really has made my morning!

Transcription and Translation of Taylor's Little Red Book Livestream (9th December 2023, to the best of my ability)
Q: Question A: Answer
Side Banters:
H: Host T: Taylor Anything in brackets: me or additional elaboration
Q: Asking him to share his experience of city walking in Shanghai earlier today
A: They went to Yu Garden which Taylor said was incredible, and he tried 糖葫蘆 Tanghulu, a traditional Chinese sweet which is candied Chinese Hawthorn
Q: How was the past few days for him and where did he go
A: He's been in China for four nights now (He came by himself btw) First night he stayed at the J Hotel which is the third tallest building in the world and the tallest hotel in the world. After that, he went to 濮院 (the venue for the GQ event) for two nights and it was incredible
Q: How's his jetlag?
A: It's hitting right now 😂 He's been drinking a lot of tea and getting better
Q: What led him to choose to become an actor instead of a competitive swimmer
A: That was an easy choice, he swan for 10 years and then decided he didn't want to swim in college, and then decided he didn't want to be a doctor (his brother's a doctor) and maybe disappointed his parents (H: No way!) It was a hard decision but he decided to move to LA and pursue acting (H: and you made it!)
Q: How is he enjoying being an actor?
A: It's tough, ups and downs. It's kind of like swimming, it's an individual activity, but you also get to collaborate with the community, which is fun.
Q: What are his favourite three movies and why?
A: The Matrix, Fight Club and Interstellar, he likes movie with a twist
Q: What type of music does he like
A: Deep House, Tropical House, Reggaeton
And then the host taught him a couple of Chinese phrases
Q: What sparked his interest in fashion
A: His dad bought him a subscription to GQ when he was younger which started his interest in fashion, and then he started watching fashion-related movies (like Brad Pitt in Allied) which further cultivated that interest. Maybe in the future, he'll try out characters like that
Q: Did he meet any friends in the GQ event?
A: He met Li Xian who he met in Italy earlier, otherwise met a lot of new people.
Q: Why is he passionate about being eco-friendly when it comes to fashion?
A: It was inspired initially by his mom. They lived in the countryside with horses, cows, and fields away from the city, and he has seven siblings (he's the sixth oldest/ third youngest) so there are a lot of hand-me-downs and not a lot of new things, so the family kept on using the same things. He gained a deeper awareness of the issue in recent years.
Q: Talk a bit about fashion sustainability
A: A lot of fast fashion material and clothes are thrown out really soon and disposed of really quickly (despite still being in good shape) but a lot of clothing material, especially synthetic fabric can't be recycled, so it's just like throwing out plastic. Actually, a lot of clothes can keep being reused and styled. He's had the inner shirt he's currently wearing for four years.
Q: Any future plans?
A: He has a film project early next year and there are other things he's excited about but can't talk about yet
Q: Is he going to Shanghai Disneyland?
A: He wants to but he doesn't have time
H: You don't even need to go to Disney you look like a Disney character already! (Damn right!!!)
Q: What food have you had in China so far?
A: Don't get him started on the subject of food 😂 He's had a Shanghainese Lunch today and a Cantonese (YAY) lunch yesterday, and he's looking for some spicy food for tomorrow. Also, he had a really crazy allergic reaction and his lips got giant (???). He needs to be careful with food.
T: I see talk about RWRB, what do you want to know? I'll give some secret intel
(me: YESSSSSSSSSS FINALLY)
RWRB questions speedrun:
Q: sequel?
A: ... He doesn't know. He says he thinks Casey has to write another book for that.
Q: Deleted scenes?
A: They're deleted for a reason (DUDE)
Q: BTS?
A: He says he has some on his phone and he would show us but he doesn't have his phone right now, he might post it later (PLEASE DO)
H: He's leaving after three days
T: (reading off comments) Come visit Hong Kong next time? Yeah! (me, who lives in Hong Kong: AHHHHHHHHHH)
Q: Do you know any Chinese nicknames of yours?
A: 忒樂. (tei le, or "Tay"-le) meaning too happy (I made a list of the boys' Chinese nicknames here)
Annddd... That's it! The live was pretty short, like 20 minutes? He ended it by picking up the phone and showing the audience the Shanghai city view himself (I was too busy typing to get a screenshot)
All transcription or interpretation mistakes are mine

Ngl I'm kind of scared of the idea of DINOK actually being made into a show. Do you think it would be profitable or even break even? I can't see it attracting a lot of mainstream attention and Dan's/DnP's core audience is not as big as it once was
i'll repeat myself here and say that it all depends on a platform and marketing. marketing can save dinok. but it can also kill it. like, single-handedly. mainstream attention depends on marketing on different platforms (huge budget). audience's attention depends on Dan talking to us on his platforms, consistently (no budget, just time). i'm sure with dinok Dan would be shooting for people outside the phandom, and that makes sense. it just needs to be done correctly, and not at the cost of his main audience.
my selfish ass wants Dan to make something out of it, just to see what he wants to tell us. the AU he created in his head. but, i don't need a show for that, i'd be happy to just read the script. if making a show costs too much money and is too risky, just sell the script. i don't want it to go to waste. it's a huge amount of work, and it would be sad if it never sees the light of day.
wad marketing in relation to dinok under the cut (too much yapping for free)
look at wad as an example. now, it's so clear that their initial strategy was experimental and didn't work, so they changed it halfway through. they also kinda dropped the promo by the European leg and just stopped updating banners in time, and overall started panicking. Dan's attitude and the main message in promo materials were all over the place, with him trying to target the general audience and the locals, meanwhile sometimes talking in riddles, and talking to us (phannies) only in liveshows at the start of each leg. and then the European leg didn't even have that. (i'm simplifying here a lot, i'm just trying to show a general picture). dd, despite having a good concept, failed to gain an audience and make people buy tickets to the show. there was a connection between dd and wad but it wasn't strong enough, and the vibes were a bit different, so it was also confusing people. dd t-shirt had a better promo in that one dd episode than the majority of wad promo clips. you know why? because it was genuine. he was whining about money and it was clear that he hated doing that bit but ffs, it was entertaining. Dan is not bad at promotion, he just needs someone to navigate his negative energy in the right direction. 90% of wad marketing was BORING as fuck. and there was not enough of it in general. wrong platforms, no consistency, boring recycled ideas (remember his clip with the US states? they did the same for ii but in a youtube video. which worked so much better not only because it was "Dan and Phil" but also because it was filmed better, the platform was bigger, and they didn't take it seriously. promoting on your main platform always wins over facebook/instagram/tiktok ads. also, we could engage with a youtube video. that's like a free promo within the phandom. geography can be FUN. wad geography wasn't). promotion doesn't have to be boring. Barbenheimer and Miley and Selena's cross-promotions showed it so clearly. fandoms love this shit, and Dan knows enough youtubers to pull this off. even if not cross-promotion tactics, there are ways to present something in a fun way. make something memeable (he tried in the beginning, but a white board wasn't the most fun tbh), make a promo we could engage with.
thank fuck they bought youtube ads for wad premiere. still fucking up with banners and editing though. and Dan still doesn't talk to his audience to make them buy tickets. like, he is trying, they have bullet points (half of them are coming out from Phil's mouth btw). but Dan making "crying" faces and pleading could be turned into "reasons why i want you to see this show". he wants to cry about how hard it was to make this show happen? about these 2 years of ups and downs? FINE. do it, talk to us, don't brush over the logistics, tell us how proud you are of finally filming the show. tell us why it's so important to you and why you want more people to see it. (Anthony's interview as an example, but make it deeper and without Anthony)
don't make me write a marketing strategy for wad premiere, no one wants that. but omg, it's his child and he doesn't know how to present it to the world. he presented dinok better by making "why i quit youtube". what i'm trying to say is that complaining works. sharing your struggles works. if he is so proud of this show he needs to tell his audience, that didn't see the show, what is it so amazing, brilliant, unique, important and wonderful about it. showing Dan on stage with a microphone isn't enough. it's pretty, but it's boring (i'm still waiting for a full promo clip to drop before Feb 25th). preshow and after-party are good selling points, but it shouldn't be the main thing. Dan is using Phil to sell wad, finally. don't get me wrong, i'm obsessed with it. he should use Phil, and only because of Phil more people are gonna see the show. but now it looks like Dan and Phil brand took the lead and wad is just a passenger. and as someone who witnessed all the stages wad went through to get to February 25th, i want the show itself to shine. it should be the main character, not the after-show or the carpet. how? Dan should talk more about things related to the show. he can go around NDAs, it's his show, his company. just don't drop names and certain numbers.
i need to stop. enough of free promo.

"Housetop" work-clothes quilt, Rita Mae Pettway, 2005
Denim and cotton, 84 x 70 inches, Collection of Souls Grown Deep Foundation
The tradition of the patchwork quilt was born of scarcity and resourcefulness, arising in times and places where the shortages of cloth called for the inventive salvaging of fabric scraps and remnants. In Gee's Bend, this recycling practice became the founding ethos for generations of quiltmakers who have transformed otherwise useless material into marvels of textile art. Until the middle of the twentieth century, the majority of quilts from the area were made from worn-out work clothes, a palette of old shirts, overalls, aprons and dress bottoms whose stains, tears, and faded denim patches provide a tangible record of lives marked by seasons of hard labor in the fields of the rural South.

“I’m wearing jewelry from the Recycling Center, a Carhartt sweatshirt with a Joy Division Unknown Pleasures patch made of an old t-shirt (sewn by my partner), a fake leather bag made by my ex-partner, a skirt from Uff, Happy Socks worn inside out, and Brooks running shoes. At the moment I just want to feel comfortable in my clothes so I prefer loose fits and soft and stretchy materials. I want my style to match my gender expression which often means mixing masculine and feminine clothes. People around me inspire my style. I often borrow clothes from my friends. I am not on social media so all my inspiration is based on real life encounters.”

GalaxyCon Raleigh
Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend days 2-4 of GalaxyCon Raleigh, and meet Harvey in person! I'll write more about that on my personal blog, but here I want to write up Harvey's outfits for the weekend, for three reasons:
I love his con style and how he's always wearing clothes that seem comfy but are also stylish.
I finally found the source for one of his fabulous shirts and I'm excited!
I may have contributed an accessory to his outfit on Saturday (I'm fine I'm totally normal about this).
Without further ado, let's start with Saturday!
Saturday
Tumblr media
Harvey arrived at the autograph tables on Saturday sporting a red stadium jersey, much like this one from EPTM USA.
Tumblr media
This boxy-fit jersey is a heavyweight polyester mesh and has loose, short sleeves and a crew neck. It comes in sizes up to 2XL (60-inch chest measurement) and is regularly priced at $40 (currently on sale for $30).
He styled this with a black tank-top underneath the jersey, his black overalls, black sneakers, an LA Dodgers cap worn backwards, and a silver aluminum tab choker necklace with a heart pendant. Harvey explained that the necklace was made of recycled materials, and was a handmade gift from a friend.
The Dodgers cap appears to be part of the New Era 59Fifty fitted field series. The 59Fifty website describes the brand as "the originator of the true fitted New Era's flagship style and an icon in sport and street culture. It is worn on the field of play by athletes worldwide." You can find similar caps on the 59Fifty site, in prices ranging from $41 to $99, or this specific cap is available from several sellers on eBay.
Tumblr media
The sneakers really intrigue me, because they're another example of the specificity of Harvey's accessories. The sneakers are black lace-up high tops with an oversized tongue, black soles, and a side snap buckled strap at the ankle. I have been able to find sneakers with three or four of those traits. I have yet to find an exact match to all of them, but I plan to keep looking! I may do a separate post on Harvey's casual footwear, actually.
Lastly, if you saw Harvey early at autographs, you might have noticed a new addition to his outfit later in the day: a stack of iridescent blue-black beaded bracelets with silver letters. These are friendship bracelets I made and brought to the autograph table, and I was extremely touched that Harvey not only put them on immediately there at the table, but wore them for the rest of the day and even posted them on his Instagram stories a couple of days later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The silver letters on each bracelet spell out one of the names of Harvey's character from Blue Beetle: José Francisco Morales Rivera De La Cruz. The name on each bracelet is bracketed by cylindrical mood beads which change color with body temperature. Harvey revealed in his Instagram story that he added the De La Cruz onto the end of the scene, and director Angel Manuel Soto chose to keep it in. Harvey shares many fans' headcanon that Guillermo and the Doctor are related!
Sunday
Tumblr media
On Sunday Harvey arrived to photo ops wearing a brightly-colored floral shirt that, if you follow his social media, you may have seen a few times before!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This Camicia comoda con stampa a fiori vivace (Comfortable Shirt with lively flower print) is a lightweight 100% viscose button-up from ASOS DESIGN Italy. It comes in sizes up to 4XL (54-56-inch chest), and is currently on sale for 21.24€ (originally retailed for 24.99€).
Harvey styled this with black shorts, black platform lace-up ankle boots, and his Heart of the Ocean replica necklace (a Titanic reference that might set your head spinning if you've ordered the @wwcitszine Volume 4--and if you haven't, you should!). He was also sporting another colorful stack of friendship bracelets, though I unfortunately don't know the details on those!
Heart of the Ocean replicas can be found many places online. I'm partial to these Etsy offerings, all under $50:
Titanic Necklace from BruarCards, $26.79
Heart of the Ocean Prop Replica from ReelArtTreasures, $39.99
I've talked shorts before, but I'm partial to these Old Navy Slim Built-In Flex Rotation Chino Shorts in color Black Jack. They have an 8-inch inseam and are available in up to size 54W. Currently on sale for $13.49!
I'm still looking for the boots. Look for that footwear post coming (hopefully) soon!

In search of compostable clothing closures
Making clothes that are 97% biodegradable is surprisingly easy. Pick a natural fibre fabric, buy some 100% cotton or linen thread, and you're there. (You can even get 100% cotton overlocker thread - though you have to go searching for it.)
Those last few percent, though? That can be tough. One of the biggest offenders is closures. While there are plenty of clothes that don't need something to hold them shut, I confess I like having the option. Below is a round-up of various closures, and their compostability.
Note: for the purpose of this article, I'm treating metal closures as "compostable", in the sense that they're 1) easy to remove before you compost the rest of the object, and 2) infinitely reusable on other things, unless they break - at which point they're usually recyclable using our current commercial systems. And remember, re-using things that already exist is always preferable to buying new, "better" items.
Buckles/Rings
While less common than other closure methods, I find buckles, D-rings and O-rings are great when used in the right context. They're usually metal or plastic, neither of which are compostable - but metal will last practically forever, if it's good quality. Plastic tends to degrade over time, especially if exposed to the sun.
I find rings especially quick and easy to use, and a set of D-rings can give a very fine-tuned amount of tightening. My favourite belt uses two square D-rings instead of a buckle closure.
Buttons
The humble button, while ubiquitous now, took a while to catch on. Buttons as a common method of closure didn't become popular in Europe* until about the early 1300s, around the same time that the tailoring revolution[^] happened.
Nowadays, plastic is by far the most common material that buttons are made from. It's cheap and sturdy, but obviously it doesn't compost. So what are some alternatives?
Liz Haywood, a pattern maker who focuses on zero-waste designs, has thought a bit about this conundrum here. There's photos of several different DIY compostable and recycled buttons in her post.
For a completely compostable garment, wood, leather, horn, fabric, and thread buttons are your best bet. If, like most sensible people, you remove the buttons from something that's about to be worm food before you ditch it, the options expand considerably - metal, clay, recycled bottle caps, even glass buttons are all possible. You can have a lot of fun with making your own buttons - to match an outfit, or contrast with it, or maybe you'd like a different button for every buttonhole...
Another, related option is cufflinks - 18th century shirts often used cufflinks on the sleeves and one or two small thread buttons on the collar. That way one set of cufflinks could be used on multiple shirts, showing off a bit of wealth, while saving them from the (admittedly harsh) laundry practices of the day.
[*]: I have no doubt that buttons became popular in other parts of the world, too, but unfortunately I don't know much about it. Europe in the 14-15th century is my main area of study, mostly due to the fact that the historical re-enactment group that I'm a part of operates in that time period.
[^]: The tailoring revolution refers to the period where garments for the higher classes underwent a dramatic change in the way they were cut out. The very short version is, fashion garments shifted from primarily rectangular construction to more form-fitting, using the precursors of many standard cutting practices used today.
Elastic
While elastic isn't technically a closure, it's used that way in many different objects. Most elastic nowadays is made from polyester and synthetic rubber. No composting there.
But, all is not lost! You can now find elastics made of natural rubber and cotton! (I was quite impressed by this, to be honest. I thought I'd have to give up elastic for good.)
The downside, as is usual when you actually give a crap about the planet, is cost. You'll mostly only find it for sale online (Etsy has several options), and it can be more expensive (especially factoring in shipping). Prices on the compostable elastics I found were comparable to a mid-range polyester elastic at Spotlight (before shipping). I think that's actually pretty good, all things considered. (I don't trust the cheapest elastic, it loses its stretch ridiculously fast. A fact I discovered to my sorrow only after buying a 20m roll of it.)
As a bonus, supposedly natural rubber elastic lasts longer than synthetic elastics - this has been my experience with many natural vs synthetic things, but I haven't tested natural elastic specifically to know for sure.
The biggest downside here is the rubber - if you're dealing with a latex allergy, this is not the solution for you.
Hooks and Eyes
While these have fallen out of favour over the years, they do have their uses in a compostable closet. They're easy to buy, and easy to make if you can get hold of the wire - all you need is a set of needle-nose pliers.
Being metal, the hook/eye can be re-used until it breaks - which takes a while. Like buttons, they're easy to take off a garment and move to another one. Unlike buttons, they don't need a buttonhole - you can move both the hook and eye almost anywhere on a garment, really refining the fit of an item.
They are, however, somewhat limited in that application - hooks and eyes work best if they're under a small but constant amount of tension, pulling in opposite directions. I once tried to use hooks and eyes on a loose-fitting medieval tunic, and it just didn't work.
Laces and Ties
Before buttons became The Big Thing in medieval Europe (and for quite a few centuries after), laces and ties were the closure method du jour. Why did they stick around so long? The same reason pyjama pants often have a drawstring in them - they add adjustability to garments in a simple and easy to use (and create!) way. Stays and corsets are one of the most recognisable examples of this concept in action.
Lacing does work better on some things than others, but just about anywhere that you'd put elastic nowadays can likely use a drawstring instead. And there are some patterns (YouTube link) for adjustable garments that use lacing as an integral part of the design.
The main downside for me? They can be slow to use, and awkward, if you have difficulty with fine motor control. Mine is variable enough that I'll usually opt for a different closure, unless lacing or ties really is the best or only option.
Snaps
Confession: I adore snaps. They're fast and easy to use when my hands don't want to co-operate, and they can be wonderfully decorative as well as functional.
There are two general types - those you sew into place like you sew on hooks and eyes, and ones that are applied to the fabric using a press. The former takes more time to install, but can be replaced relatively easily if they stop working. The latter can technically be replaced, but it's a LOT harder and you risk damaging the fabric behind it while you try. They're also more likely to rip out of the fabric in the first place.
As for material, it's pretty much just metal and plastic (sometimes a combination). From a sustainability standpoint, metal is the better option - as long as you recycle it at the end of its life.
Zips
Zips are everywhere nowadays. They're easy to use, but can be hard to replace when they break. Putting them in correctly isn't always a cake-walk either. And in terms of compostability, the answer is definitely "no".
The vast majority of zippers on the market use a polyester or poly-cotton tape, with plastic or metal teeth set into it, and plastic or metal tabs and pulls. Because of the mix of materials, and the size of a typical zip, most municipal waste streams can't take them for recycling. However, textile recyclers` such as Upparel usually take zips (and the things they're attached to!).
I also found a couple of different manufacturers creating zips out of post-consumer recycled materials - a pleasant surprise, and a strong move towards closing waste streams.
[`]: Clothing retailers are increasingly taking responsibility for their part in reducing waste by offering recycling programs through their stores. Recycling Near You and Frankie list some of the major programs in Australia, though it's worth noting that most of those listed only want whole textiles or large pieces - to my knowledge, Upparel is the only place that will take scraps, broken textiles, and related.
If I've missed a closure type, or you know of places selling compostable or truly recyclable versions of any of the above, I would love to hear about it. While I'm (currently) a far less prolific sewist than the blog name implies, I want to be deliberate and thoughtful in my sewing choices going forward.
Also, as a last random thought, I wonder if anyone has started making bioplastic versions of any of the above? *Wanders off to do some research...*

I feel like delulu posting my 2012 Once-ler/ Greed-ler headcanons, so here you go:
The Greed-ler Suit
Is made out of truffula/ is a thneed and absorbs all the filth in the air. That would be why the Once-ler is the only clean looking thing by the end of the movie. What makes me think this? Because we see when he gets rotten tomatoes thrown at him in the beginning of his thneed selling journey, the thneed is able to get the tomato completely out of his vest and shirt (which are 2 different materials). This is the same thneed we saw him use to soak up a cup of water and mop his floor just before he set out to sell them! He also wore this thneed on the walk to Greenville, so that thing was full of sweat too when it cleaned those tomatoes.
The greed-ler suit being a fancy thneed being green would just go to further show their versatility! "Look at this! They can even be dyed to be an unnatural color!" it would portray! He would be a walking advertisement.
Would smell so bad by the end of the movie because of the water pollution lol. Ain't no damn WAY that once the water is that polluted, ANYONE is able to have clean laundry, let alone people who have garments that need special care. I know I sure didn't see any infrastructure to properly care for the water! Just what they needed in order not to look at the shloppity-shlop. So, if the greed-ler suit is made of truffula, there is no way at all that it doesn't need special laundering. Do you think that could be done without clean water? I don't think so!
When it is properly laundered and cared for, the Once-ler smells like butterfly milk because thats how truffula tufts smell. As the suit falls into disrepair, the smell would start to get sour like curdled milk.
Is hand made. You can NOT tell me he didn't make that suit and the gloves himself. You can see by the end of the movie that the lines on the suit are starting to look jagged and not quite right when, in the beginning, it didn't look like that. The more suits he made, the less he was able to hold it together, and the less he cared about what he was doing. I think it's meant to show he got sloppy and uncaring with time when he used to be so passionate and care deeply about what he did and what he put out into the world.
The Once-ler was treated poorly by his family because of his natural affinity towards recycling/ nature
Okay, hear me out. Hear me out!!
When we first see the whole family, what is the most notable thing about the environment around them? It's dead. Every inch of the environment around that family home is dead. But as we follow the Once-ler while he leaves home, we see the environment brighten up and become livelier! The further he is from home, we dont just see him relax and become more alive, we see the whole ecosystem start to thrive (personally, I think the scenery we see him traverse is meant to be places that the family has already been and devastated, but thats just one of my "source: I made it the fuck up" ideas lol! In the book, we get the lore that the Once-lers hop from place to place as the environments they infest can't keep up with them.).
So, with that in mind, think about the way he behaved immediately when he found the truffula trees; he was immediately filled with wonder! He called it beautiful and was moved to tears nearly! He broke out into song ffs. When he was approached by the animals, he was friendly and sang with them! We saw him mindlessly fling his stuff around, but as soon as he realized, "Oh maybe I should reign this in. They didn't like that!" he did! He started learning to live with the animals and in the environment before the Lorax got involved. You can't tell me that the face he makes when he sees how happy sharing his marshmallows with the forest critters wasn't genuine joy. That man loves the forest, and you can not tell me he wasn't doing his best, considering he had no knowledge to build off of when he got there.
When his family comes, we get to see their first impressions of the truffula trees, and it was with disgust, disrespect, disregard, and disassociation in that order as his family got out of the RV. Their reactions are literally not only the opposite of the Once-ler's, but it was directly oppositional to his reaction. The family came in an RV (which is the first pollutant to the forest) and parked WAY too close to the Once-ler's camp; they overshadow him and the environment both literally and metaphorically when they show up. They're throwing the bears, bending the trees, trying to fist fight the forest guardian... they're showing none of the care that the Once-ler was naturally inclined to show. Any time he talks to his mom, his face is shadowed, or he isn't the focus of whatever the shot is. Hes not only not like them, hes not equipped to deal with knowimg that he is not like them, and hes also not equipped to deal with them knowing that he isn't like them.
Once-ler details I noticed that make me giggle and kick my feet
(I need to be sent to a psych ward lol)
His blanket is not just handmade. Oh no. We see he has his baby blanket sewn into it!!! He even picked a thread color that matches both fabrics. But.. the baby blanket is sewn on crooked. This makes me think that this blanket he made was probably a first project or when he was a beginner! Pulling from personal experience with knitting/ sewing, blankets are a very common project for beginners.
He fixes his guitar after that one asshole kid smashes it. We see that the guitar is visibly broken at the beginning of How Bad Can I Be when it was fine before that. After the thneed finds success, the first brand new thing we see the Once-ler buy is a new guitar that looks like his old one that the asshole kid smashed, and he DESERVED THAT NEW GUITAR!!!
We see that he brought those 2 giant bags of marshmallows with him from home. If he didn't set out to the truffula forest and didn't know to expect the animals to love the marshmallows... you're gonna tell me he didn't bring those marshmallows for himself? I don't believe you. He brought those big ass bags of marshmallows because he loved them, and he didn't know when he would be seeing them again. Which makes it even more sweet that he was so willing to share!!!! I will absolutely not be accepting criticism about that!!
He made a table, a chair, and a pitcher out of the trunk of the first truffula tree he chopped down. We can clearly see all 3 of them in the scene when the family first shows up. They are all patterened exactly the same as the truffula trees. So that means he used the whole entire tree, including the fruits, because if he didn't cook with it, the animals would eat it.
My sources are that I have a hyperfixation and that I feel it in my heart, bro

I am OBSESSED and begging for more of this! XX
What happens next? What does Nick do when someone threatens his new family? And of course, how much do our ovaries melt when he becomes that dad we know he will
Any other snippets you can share?
“Mrs. Vaughan,” Tucker, a man with an ego kept in check by a life-debt owed to Vaughan, stands at the edge of the room with a bag in his hand, “boss wanted me to give you this.”
Your infant is nestled in the bassinet, snuggled and wrapped in a soft blanket that keeps him warm and safe. You find yourself studying him from the bay window you’re sitting at, soft music playing nearby to keep him sleeping.
Its only after Tucker calls your name again that you give him your attention. You stand and cross the room, every step you take is languid with no urgency. Tucker’s waiting for you, the bag held out to you is made of recycled paper, the kind you’ve seen before, and you know its a gift for you.
“He doesn’t have to-”
“Take it.” Tucker insists, handing you the bag before looking over his shoulder with an encompassing sigh. “Boss man’s a little on edge.”
“What is it?” You gaze into the bag, noting the folded material that seems soft to the touch.
You lift the material from inside, dropping the bag to the floor and you manage to just unfold the gift when your husband appears behind Tucker.
“Get out.” Nick grits his teeth, aggressive bite that you’ve only seen a few times before, and Tucker immediately makes himself scarce.
“Nick-“ He comes toward you with a powerful stride and grabs hold of your face, cupping your cheeks and smashing his lips against yours.
Tongue meets tongue, teeth clash and the sweater falls from your hands. You’re held in his grasp, you’re rooted to the spot as he possesses you with a kiss. He pushes you back toward the bed, both of you falling to the mattress, and he still doesn’t stop.
He doesn’t stop until he’s ripped your cheap shirt and left nips, licks and kisses all over the column of your neck. He doesn’t stop until he’s kissed all over your chest and then he stops. Nick rests his head against your chest, he uses your breasts as a pillow and snaked his arms around you.
“I’ll protect you and your son with my life. I’ll kill for you two, I’ll die for you.” Nick mumbles softly against you, he’s taken a moment to breathe and you can’t help but think of what kind of threat came against you for him to say this.
“Nick…I’m not-” you stop yourself when you hear your baby boy whimpering, the start of a cry building in his little body.
“I should-“
“Let me.” Nick kissed you, he left you wanting more before he moved off the bed and rose to his feet.
He didn’t need to be asked twice, he didn’t need to be pressured, instead he walked toward your boy’s bassinet and lifted him from the bedding. Nick tucked him into his chest and crooned, acting as if he’d been there from the very beginning.

The figure of Sephiroth before him lunged, sword aimed to pierce at the Phoenix's heart, and seconds before the steel could impale his chest the man--
Burst into flames.
He howled as his skin bubbled and crackled. Viscera oozed down his cheeks before being charred black and disappearing behind another curtain of flames that swallowed him whole. Even his shrieks of pain were dwarfed by the howls of the fire.
And just as quickly as it had blossomed, the flames vanished. The only remnant left behind was a pile of ash and a scorch mark on the ground.
Joshua stared at it for a long moment, his chest heaving from exhaustion. As the world around him flickered, the strange liminal space of the battlefield replaced by the stark white walls of the ShinRa labs, he felt his legs start to shake before his knees gave out. There should have been paid when he went crashing to the floor and his knees connected heavily with solid ground, but he felt nothing.
For a moment, at least.
The urge to vomit hit him before the wave of nausea did. It came on fast, strong, and Joshua clapped a hand over his mouth in a vain attempt to try to stop himself - which only resulting in his stomach's contents spewing out from between his fingers, splattering the front of his shirt and pants as well as the ground. His chest heaved again as his lungs spasmed, and he was forced onto all fours as more bile was ejected from his stomach.
It was tinged red and black and was far too thick for just bile. There were also chunks that Joshua was certain had to be flesh, more than likely his own that had necrotized from the materia.
Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes as his stomach convulsed again, and again, and again. The horrible mixture of bloody vomit leaked from his nose, and part of him was certain that was even what his tears were made out of him.
It felt like ages before his body finally quieted down, left without any strength to continue expelling the rotting pieces that had grown inside. It was in that quiet that another sound finally registered; slow, steady clapping.
He tilted his head up to see Hojo standing several feet away from him, applauding the performance. "Congratulations. You managed to defeat the Sephiroth programming."
Something that might have almost been pride? curled up inside of him.
"A program that had been recorded almost three months ago now, and that he had long since surpassed."
"... Ah."
If he had energy, Joshua would have felt ashamed and sick to his stomach - though the latter was already well taken care of. All of that effort. All of that suffering. And for something pointless. Useless.
There was a soft tut from Hojo, a noise that was clearly mocking, only Joshua couldn't hear it for what it truly was. "Cheer up. There's still Genesis and Angeal. They could maybe make use of this. Or some of the other SOLDIERS. Oh, I'm sure we'll find this useful for another... week or so?"
A week. That was all the time his suffering had earned him. Maybe longer, but Joshua knew better than to hope for that. But still, a week-- a week without having to suffer under the experimental surgeries from Hojo, without having to force his body to fight even when he could feel himself beginning to break down.
A towel was dropped on the floor a few paces from Joshua. "Clean this up. You can shower after." Nothing else was said before Hojo left, leaving Joshua to reach out to snag the cloth with shaky hands. There was a bucket, a sink and hose, and a drainage hole on the other side of the room, which meant he had to force himself to stand on shaky legs and walk over, filling the bucket up, carry it back, try to wipe up as much of his own gore as it could-
-try not to vomit again so he didn't have more to clean up-
The process took him close to an hour. His own clothing, a simple red shirt and black pants, were tossed into one of the hazardous material recycling bins in his room. No doubt they would just be incinerated before a new pair was given to him. It didn't matter much; he had plenty of identical pairs.
At least the hot water never runs out. It was the only thing he could really think of as Joshua crawled - almost literally - into the small shower in his room. It wasn't really meant for people to do anything other than stand in it, but he curled his legs up to his chest to allow him to sit as he let the hot water just pelt him, washing away the dirt and vomit and blood. More than likely he'd fall asleep here.
A week. Maybe he could plant more flowers. Or go into Midgar. A whole week. Practically a lifetime, really...
