All by her lonesome, Thunder Rail 2004 crosses a snowy gravel road on the way back home to Arborfield, Saskatchewan after interchanging grain loads with CN, 03/19/2009. Photo by Matt Watson via Railpictures.ca
Initially built and operated by CN, the Arborfield branch line was sold to the shortline Carlton Trail Railway, who sold it on to Thunder Rail in 2005. THR uses the line for hauling grain products like wheat, barley, oats, alfalfa, and canola with an ex-Providence and Worchester Railroad locomotive.

Fun facts: while I don’t believe Union Pacific was one of them, there have been American railroads like Genessee and Wyoming and Wisconsin Central that have had freight operations in the UK. So it’s actually not totally out there for Girlball to be UP-aligned but still British.

A mellanoid Advanced Steam tank engine, for use in shunting, industrial shortlines, and branch lines. This particular class has variants designed for burning coal, oil, or biofuels. Note the large covered fuel bunker atop the saddle tank. Like most Advanced Steam locos, it has compound cylinders to expand the steam twice for more efficient operation.
The above loco is pictured with the same livery used by the Slaibsgloth Coal Mine engines, so this might indeed be one of those. However, here are some alternate liveries for fun.

Alastor manifests a conductor’s hat and dons it. “All aboard! Next stop: Royal Circle and the Morningstar Palace!” His face softens as Vox steps up. He offers his arm. “Shall we? If you ignore the warm, sponginess of the floor, Tim’s insides are quite comfortable.” Vox grins. “Sure. A train ride to an upcoming battle sounds weirdly romantic.” Alastor kisses the other Overlord’s knuckles. “I’m so glad you’re safe.” He whispers. “I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you.”

Here's a neat little shortline operation in Iowa, the Iowa Traction Railway. They operate entirely electrically on over 100 year old electric locomotives. Incase anyone who isn't already big on trains sees this; electric trains have been a thing since before diesel or gas trains were big and the US used to have 91% of all the electric rail in the world! (though, that only made up 1% of the network). This line used to be an interurban passenger operation, but pivoted to freight and survived even with electric operations.
Anyway, I spent a day railfanning them with my dad back in March of last year. In this first photo we see the crew of ITAR 50 (Blt. 1920) looking back on a cut of cars on Black and White film.

Here is 50 pulling out an old Southern Pacific boxcar from the interchange for a customer.
Tumblr media
They spot it at the customer, drop it off, and pull out. Clean and simple.

On one end of the line, now only used for storage, a semaphore is seen permanently in the yellow, "approach", position. This signal has been out of use for many a moon, but still stands as a testament to how busy the line once was, not just for freight, but for passenger.
All photos by me, shot on film, have a nice day everyone :)

SPR 15, a GE 44-ton locomotive, pulls a passenger coach for Southern Prairie Railways in Ogema, Saskatchewan. A tourist railway, SPR is operated by the Ogema Heritage Railway Association and runs on trackage formerly part of the CPR Assiniboia subdivision, now owned by shortline railway company Red Coat Road & Rail. SPR's locomotive was purchased in 2010 from Conway Scenic Railway in Conway, New Hampshire, and was originally built in 1945 as a switcher for the Maine Central Railroad. It’s funny seeing a rare contrarian in the wild who actively says they aren’t into US steam/diesel engines “because they all look the same” and is more into electric trains, even mundane EMUs because “they come in more shapes and colors”
