Have you watched The Queen’s Gambit? I am enamoured with Beth Harmon’s fashion. The issue is, it takes place in the sixties. Is it possible to still dress in that style today? Hope you’re well!
Dearest, thank you so much for this question, it was a lot of fun to think about!!! I have to admit that I don’t have Netflix, but what I’ve seen of that show has seriously made me consider rethinking that choice!♟🤍✨
However, for now I went through all her looks to get a more concrete idea of what her outfits are like and thus I hope that I can still say a thing or two that might help!
.⚜️.
First, to answer your question: Yes, you can definitely dress like that today as well! It’s all a matter of analysing the style (which is a lot less work than it sounds, I promise!).
.⚜️.
When it comes to analysing a style, you can go about that just as you’d go about analysing a painting – colours, lines, composition.
From what I’ve gathered from the looks, the colour palette is very matte. Mainly white/cream and black, with hints of mint, yellow or brown and dark purple or dark green. Additionally, she has that striking red hair (but even that has a muted quality to it, doesn’t it?).
When I say “lines” I think of the silhouette the person has thanks to the clothes they wear. 60s fashion has some geometric and some form fitting elements – the skirts, bags and coats with their triangular shape on one hand, the turtlenecks on the other. For this show, I noticed that they put a lot of shirts on her that have distinctive collars. Either a Peter Pan collar (the rounded one) or a triangular one when she’s in the tennis get up (I LOVE that look!!). And, of course, the turtlenecks! Additionally, she wears a lot of checks – which is most definitely a nod towards the fact that she plays chess. And I read that the lovely outfit she wears in the car scene - the white one with the pom pom hat – was inspired by the white queen in chess.
When it comes to actually incorporating these elements into your wardrobe (and thus, composing an outfit), you have a lot of rather easy yet chic options – turtlenecks and blouses with A-line (mini) skirts. A form-fitting top with a bateau neckline and jeans or wide-legged trousers. Leggings with an oversized wool jumper.
Accessories can really make a difference, too – a headbands or (faux) silk scarves wrapped around your head, maybe a bow. She wears a very delicate gold watch, but seemingly no other jewellery from what I can tell. For handbags, I would suggest the kind that’s box-shaped rather than sack-like, to further push the clean lines.
If you want to go a step further, you could look into finding an A-line coat, maybe a beret and gloves (sometimes, those are sold as matching sets!). A cocktail dress, even!
@bossymarmalade really opened my eyes when they said that the key to a good wardrobe is a consistent colour palette – it’ll make it much easier to combine outfits since all the colours work with each other, and it gives an overall clean and composed feel. The looks of the show have pops of colour, but black and white seem to be a reoccurring theme.
.⚜️.
In general, I feel like many elements that make those outfits could easily be worn today – and even the more daring looks are definitely still wearable if you feel comfortable in them! If you want to go that route but are nervous to begin with, start slow. Today a turtleneck and an a-line mini skirt, tomorrow a checked white coat with green leather gloves?
 .⚜️.
Lovely, I hope this helped!! Thank you so much for your question, and I wish you all the best 🌹
