“You look…”
“Ridiculous?” you finished the sentence your boyfriend started, as you regarded your costume in the tall mirror that stood in the corner of your bedroom.
“No, you look cute.” David chuckled, walking up behind you to plant a quick peck on your cheek.
“Aw, you’re cute, too, my love.” you said, as you turned around, the heavy fabric of your showdress limiting your movement.
“Excited? Scared?” he asked, looking around the different parts of your costume you had thrown around the room.
The answer to that would probably be a strong yes and no. It wasn’t your first show, so you didn’t get stage fright that easily. But it was your first time playing a lead role, so you were equally as excited as you were frightened. You considered seeking a Heartrender to slow your heartbeat, but instead, you decided to put on every variation of the costume you were supposed to be wearing today, occasionally reciting some of your lines.
“Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em.” you quoted dramatically, watching him smile in amusement.
“Oh Saints, you truly are a walking script, aren’t you?”
“Occasionally.”
Both of you laughed, stepping closer to share another kiss before it was time to change and leave for the theatre. David wore a suit - a strange sight for you, as you rarely had an occasion to dress this fancy.
“We’ll see each other after the show.” you smiled, kissing him again, as he fixed his tie.
“Of course, I’ll find you. Zoya, Nikolai and Genya should also be waiting for you with me, so I won’t get lost without you.” he cooed, a playful grin on his lips.
“Then you’ll be in the safest hands.” you giggled, grabbing the package of clothing and leaving the room hurriedly, hoping to still have enough time to mentally prepare yourself for the show.
David had never missed a show you were in. Even if you were ‘only’ in the ensemble, he still was there. Before you started dating, he made sure to always sit in the far back, trying to go as unnoticed as possible. But after you became a thing, he made sure to steadily move forward.
When you arrived backstage, all the other actors were already weaselling around the space, trying to get their last few things fixed before the preparations for the show started. After everything seemed to be sorted out, you decided that it was time to get into costume, forcing yourself into the tight costume. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but the stress and the warmth of the fabric made you sweat profusely. One of your co-stars even scurried toward you, offering some of their powder to hide the sweat once you were on stage. You gladly accepted their offer.
When it was finally time to begin the show, your heart was pounding. You could do this. The script was far away from difficult, and it wasn’t your first time on stage. And knowing that David was in the crowd, the man that had to watch you practice a billion times before, made you calm down a bit.
The static light shone brightly at you, stopping you from fully taking in the crowd. But even without seeing every face clearly, you could still make out that the theatre was full.
You were glad that the first few minutes of the play were mainly dialogue, not needing you to be quite as agile, as you would be during over scenes. After a few lines, the light dimmed, causing your eyes to search through the crowd. And there he sat, next to your other friends that also came to watch your play. It was comforting, knowing that they cared so much.
Keeping their presence in mind, the rest of the play went on flawlessly. You didn’t miss your cues, mess up your lines or even drop something as you almost floated over the stage, every movement rehearsed.
Only the thunderous applause pulled you from your acting trance, as you realized that the show was already over.
The rest of the cast was ecstatic, it couldn’t have gone any better. You received hugs, words of approval and even flowers from the others, as you laughed alongside them, feeling content with your performance.
“David!” you shrieked, as you stumbled out of the theatre house, where your four friends stood waiting for you.
He laughed, opening his arms and engulfing you in a tight hug.
“You were amazing!” Genya commented, her eyes glistening in the white moonlight.
Zoya could only agree, also moving forward to pull you into her arms. In times like these, you were glad to have such good friends.
When they were finished with their praises, a soft arm wrapped around your waist, David standing close to you, as the group made their way back to the Palace.
“I think we should celebrate!” Nikolai announced, already eager to get drunk.
“I think we should. We have every reason to celebrate.“ David agreed, giving you another quick peck on the forehead.
“I don’t know where this road will end, but I’ll walk with you into the wind.” you quoted again, a dramatic sigh huffing out of David’s lungs, as he shook his head in adoration.
“You’re a nerd.”
“Yes, but I am your nerd.”
