These Shrimp & Chives Dumplings from Ho Kee Pau (和记包) saw a price revision from S$1.50 to S$1.80! No matter how good it might tasted, S$0.30 increase a piece is just too much to stomach. Time to drop it from my to-buy shopping list. COVID-19 + War = Inflation! Worst is after the prices goes up, they almost never come down even when the situation improved. :(

It was after a hard case they bought some dumplings from a little place down the street—one of the aunties ran her shop from the third floor of her apartment. And there were fried ones, steamed ones, boiled ones, filled with pork, filled with shrimp, filled with chives, and just about anything under the sun. So they ordered a lot—now the takeways weren’t “a lot” by any means, but if you factor in the amount of noodles Xiaoshi ate today then it was. But it was sort of enough if he could share them as soon as Lu Guang opened one of them, and the rich steam puffing up pushed the color in his cheeks.

2024.09.05 - It's hard to guard against thieves in the house. A habitual offender. 20+ peeled shrimps. Chive dumplings. Wraps. Chicken heads. Chicken soup. Braised beef. Cherries. A whole bowl of grilled cold noodles. Tea eggs. Steamed crab legs. Cold-mixed beef. Barbecued pork and rice. Stir-fried beef with celery.
LYN: Up. Up. /points at her/ I'll ask you- who ate half of the stir-fried beef with celery on the table? Tell me! /kneels/ You're getting bolder, huh? You dare to climb the table, to eat MY food?? Huh?!? Lie down. Down. Down! /gets in closer/ Let me tell you- if you dare climb the table and eat again, I will not let you go unpunished. Do you hear me!? /gently pets Daimi's head/ /devolves into doggy roughhousing/

Tian You Feng Dumpling House, 1428 S Azusa Ave, West Covina, CA 91791
Tumblr media
Tian You Feng is a Northern Chinese restaurant specializing in dumplings and beef noodle soup. They do have quite a few types of dumplings, including fish & chive, pork & chive, shrimp & pork, pork & cabbage, shrimp & chicken, and chicken dumplings. You can get them boiled or pan-fried. They also have XLB, won tons, and SJB. They also have your standard Chinese restaurant dishes (the clientele is mixed – not all Chinese) like fried rice, orange chicken, kung pao chicken, and Mongolian beef.
Green onion pancake ($8.99): Barely any scallions, greasy, very thin, chewy with a bit of crunch, good flavor though
Pan fried pork buns (SJB, 6 for $13.99): These were good size buns with golden bottoms. They were served hot and had a bit of juice but they were rather salty and not that juicy. The bun part was very good though.
Service was friendly but a bit slow. There was only one person taking orders, busing tables, cashiering, etc. To order, circle what you want on the laminated menu. I noticed there were a lot of flies inside the restaurant. They have a senior discount. Parking was easy to find in the strip mall.

Murim Dumplings
There is no recipe of Murim Dumplings w/ Chicken Broth in ORV Novel. However, this recipe is inspired and made by combining Chinese and Korean dumplings recipe and hoping for the best it would turn out well.
(dumpling filling)
- ground pork [fat to meat: 2:8]
- ground chicken
- finely chopped shrimp
- cooked korean glass noodles
- firm tofu
- grated ginger
- grated garlic
- finely chopped napa cabbage
- minced shiitake mushroom
- chopped onion chives
- black pepper
- soy sauce
- fish sauce
- sesame oil
- egg
(dumpling wrapper)
- flour
- salt
- hot water
[*note: 15 inches wide (like baozi wide) yet thin (like xiao long bao); with flour to water ratio of 70:30.]
(chicken broth)
- vegetable oil
- chicken wings
- chicken feet
- korean radish
- napa cabbage
- carrots
- white onion
- onion leeks
- chinese celery
- ginger
- garlic
- splash of soy sauce
- splash of fish sauce
- salt & pepper (to taste)
xxx
1.) In a heated big pot, pour a teaspoon of oil and lightly fry the wings and feet until a little light brown. Add 1000ml of water and put all the ingredients. Let it simmer. When the scum surfaces, remove it before letting it boil. Use pressure cooker to save time.
2.) While the chicken broth is boiling, prepare the ingredients for the filling.
3.) Put everything in a big bowl and gently mix together. Set it aside in a cool and dry place with a clear wrap.
4.) When the broth is ready, drain the clear broth in another pot with a strainer. Do not throw the ingredients and make other dish with it. Set the broth aside.
5.) Mix the flour and salt together before adding the hot water, one tablespoon at a time. Knead well until its soft and smooth for 15-20 minutes. Cover the dough with a wet cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
6.) Lightly dust a clean work surface with flour to prevent the dough from sticking on the surface. Roll the dough in long cylinder about 10 inches in diameter and thin like a xiao long bao's.
7.) Fill the wrappers with generous fillings and shape them up with baozi-like folding by rotating the hand to make pleats with a thumb pushing the filling in the "bag" and pinching the top to seal it. Lightly wet it on the sides to seal it well.
8.) Brush steamer with oil before placing the dumplings and cook by steaming for 12-15 minutes.
9.) When the dumplings are cooked, serve it with the chicken broth. Enjoy!

Mum bought this packed box of Brunch on her daily commute to the wet market in Chong Pang. From the left, stir-fried okra with dried chilli for the bit of heat. In the middle are crispy and sweet Butterflied Gangetic Anchovies (Thryssa mystax). To the Malays, it is Ikan Bulu Ayam but us Chinese called it 美人鱼, which means Mermaid in English. Lastly, Cereal Fish (麦片鱼) which has more batter than fish. :(

She also got a bowl of Pork & Shrimp Dumplings Soup (水饺汤) from Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House to be shared among ourselves. It is always delightful munching on these plump packages of minced pork, shrimps and chives wrapped in wanton skin.

It was inside this French market that has all kinds of food so French is not accurate. I got a sampler so I could try everything. I enjoyed everything but the bao buns are my favorite.
I just looked it up: 1x Pork and Shrimp Shu Mai, 1 × Shrimp Dumpling, 4 x Chicken Dumplings, 1 x BBQ Chicken bao bun, 1 × BBQ Pork bao bun. Absolutely delish.
I’m glad you’re feeling better!
