Cheerleading is NOT Sexist

Running a successful professional cheerleading team I have the sexism conversation a lot, and in light of the recent media attention I thought I would final publish this blog. The misconception that if a women is a cheerleader/dancer she must be being taken advantage of, or being exploited is ‘simply’ not true. Our main goal at sports or corporate events is to engage with children and women to make all sports more family and female friendly, and to entertain, which we do very well.

I am not afraid to say I am a feminist, not the man hating, burning bras type, I believe feminism is about choice. These women choose to perform, and they do it amazingly well, removing this choice or not allowing them to perform is a form of oppression it is a sexist action, you are not protecting these women you are suppressing their right to a choice.

I often say to people ‘I am a women running a team of women who are professional dancers, they have often worked from the age of 3 to be where they are today.’ I take my hat of to these women who have decided to enter the very difficult world of dance, to make their living through entertaining and bringing joy to people. They are athletes in their own right, and when they are not performing they are paying to take dance classes to refine their skills, teaching children and adults different forms of dance, working within the world of fitness as instructors and PT’s they also work for brands as promo staff and do temp work to pay the bills.

I am the first to admit that the standard of professional cheerleading in the UK before my company arrived on the scene was not great, this is what I have and am still changing. But for others to think the women who work for me are being exploited and taken advantage of is insulting, not only to me but to them. They are professional dancers who love to perform, entertain and engage with fans while always being paid. The opportunity to perform at events in front of thousands of people at an event is a dream come true - for them, and me.

I am sure I will continue having this conversation with different people, I will continue to challenge, re-educate, change hearts and minds with regards to these ideas and issues.

Na světě jsou dva typy lidí. Jedni jsou ti, kteří s autem prostě jezdí a neřeší ho. A pak také ti, pro které to není jen obyčejný dopravní prostředek. Majitelé z druhé skupiny si také auto často upravují a je jedno, co je to zač. Může to být klidně i elektromobil, jak dokazuje tato upravená Tesla Model 3.

Tohle auto totiž dostalo nový bodykit, jinou masku přední kapoty, ale hlavně snížený vzduchový podvozek a do podběhů velká 20″ kola. Kola mají rozměry 10×20 palců vpředu a dokonce 11×20 palců vzadu. 

Nejde ale o jen tak obyčejné disky. Jde o kola z edice Ferrada Forge8 Line. Tyto konkrétní jsou Ferrada F8-FR7 v laku Machine Silver. Jedno kolo startuje na 550 dolarech, sada tedy vyjde na 2200 dolarů bez pneu. A to není úplně málo.

The Elephant and Castle Community Fund 2017 is enabling a ‘Daytime Nightclub’ for the over 60s to be brought to the ‘Piccadilly of the South’

The Elephant and Castle Community Fund 2017, delivered in partnership with Southwark Council, received 36 applications this year all bidding for a share of a £50,000 fund for their project. With 11 successful projects, each receiving a share of the fund donated by Lendlease & Southwark Council, this series of blogs will take a look at some of the deserving winners.

Life is a cabaret, old chum Our first post in the series is about a company called Duckie that will be bringing a ‘Daytime Nightclub’ for over 60s to Elephant and Castle.

The organisation behind the idea has been awarded £5,000, plus an additional grant from the United St Saviour’s Charity, to enable them to bring a cabaret event to the area on a weekly basis for 15 weeks from December 2017. Starting in the Town Centre for the first five weeks, Duckie will create an ‘unexpected oasis of joy’ for shoppers to stumble across before the event moves to a community venue for 10 additional weeks.

Up to 80 guests will be served 1940s afternoon tea by waiters wearing black tie while enjoying cabaret acts, vintage crockery and an in-house pianist. A worthy winner, Duckie encapsulates the community spirit that is at the heart of our Community Fund. With an emphasis on glamour combined with regular access to entertainment and social connectivity, the events will bring older people and local volunteers together to dance, make friends and have fun.

A good old knees up As Duckie Producer, Simon Casson, said himself “It is more like an afternoon at The Ritz than a voluntary service.  Tell your Mum, tell your Nan and bring your Grandad for a knees up!”

Rob Heasman, Lendlease’s Project Director at Elephant Park, said: “We’re confident that Duckie is going to be really well-received. Elephant and Castle is London’s most exciting place to live, work and visit. We’re delighted to welcome something so glamorous and entertaining to what has historically been referred to as the ‘Piccadilly of the South’. There is something special happening in Elephant and Castle, it’s great that Duckie is going to be part of it.”

More worthy winners Other beneficiaries of the Elephant and Castle Community Fund 2017 include the over 65’s fitness and socialising charity Silverfit, the Latin American Disabled People’s Project, the Afro-Brazilian Arts and Cultural Exchange Institute, South London Cares and the Future Theatre Company.  The fund aims to build on the strengths of local people, celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the area and support people most in need. For the second time, Lendlease and Southwark Council have each donated £25,000 support the Elephant and Castle community.
