11 years ago Rain lashed against the windows as 11-year-old Dara's heart hammered against her ribs. Stuck at a sleepover that made her wish she was in the quiet comfort of her own bedroom, one phone call promised to change all that. "No problem, honey, we'll be there soon," her mom's warm voice came on the other line. "Let me start the car," she heard her father add as an engine roared. When the call ended, a knot twisted deep in her stomach. She ignored it, counting down the minutes and hours until red and blue lights flashed outside. The following years blurred into a collage of grief and therapy sessions. The storm that night in June -- the last day of sixth grade -- was a metaphor for the one that raged inside her. For years, the guilt became a constant companion reminding her that if she hadn't called then they'd still be alive.

The rhythmic crash of waves was the only soundtrack to her fifth Gatsby rereading. Sun-warmed sand, the salty tang in the air – it was her paradise on earth. Suddenly, Odin launched into a flurry of barks, running down to the shoreline. Startled, Dara looked up to find the source of his excitement – a lone figure navigating a small boat toward the docks. A man, his face obscured by distance, grinned and waved sheepishly. Dara waved back, a smile spreading across her face. For once, reality became a touch more interesting than the pages of her novels.

Moving to Brindleton Bay promised possibility. But the opportunities wouldn't just fall on Dara's lap. In order to find the purpose-driven career she desired, she needed to do the work and send out her resumé and cover letter to all the entry-level positions she could find. The pay would barely cover her bills in the beginning, but she hoped this would unlock a path where her career and values would align.
