Mondstadt during the summer months could get incredibly hot. Something you dreaded every year. Your only reprieve came from dating a cryo wielder who ran hypothermic levels of cold. A cryo wielder who wasn't currently in bed beside you despite the late hour. You sat up, rubbing your eyes as you looked around the bedroom. His chair in the corner of the room was empty, book abandoned on top of the fireplace mantel. This wasn't anything new, Ohm often left to treat people in the middle of the night. But the longer you quietly sat up in bed.

The louder the silence became.

You slipped out of the bed and moved to the open bedroom door, peeking out into the dark hallway. Definitely quiet. The small cottage was certainly empty, the captain’s coat often hanging by the door missing. You sighed as you grabbed your shoes, foregoing your own coat as you pulled open the door. The wave of hot sticky air hit you like a dense wall and you couldn't help your grimace. The middle of the night and it was already this hot? If it weren't for your mission, you'd consider staying in.

Nonetheless once you stepped outside, shutting the cottage door behind you. It didn't take very long to spot the man in question. Ohm was laying on the ground beside the waterfall, staring up at the sky full of stars. You made your way over to him, the captain barely regarding you as you sat on the grass beside him. Besides the sound of the waterfall and the distant crickets, the night was silent. A few seconds went by before Ohm sat up, untied long periwinkle hair falling around his shoulders as he looked at you.

"Did I wake you?"

"Too hot without you." You mused and the man chuckled, shifting to sit closer. His shoulder brushed against yours and you immediately leaned your head against him. His hand found yours in the dark, cold scarred fingers intertwining with your own. "You okay? You haven't been out here for a while." Your question was barely a whisper and he merely hummed in response. Ohm brought his free hand up, nervously running his fingers through his hair as he undoubtedly lost himself to his thoughts. "Ohm.." You trailed off, voice a bit louder this time.

"The void is not empty and the Abyss gazes also." Ohm whispered much to your confusion. He must have sensed your confusion, a small chuckle escaping him as he tilted his head back up to the stars. "Somebody I respect once told me that. It has haunted me since. I am sure they had different intentions but…" Ohm trailed off, a sigh escaping him. "It reminds me of the Gods." You remained quiet as you listened to his words, hesitation lacing his tone. He barely spoke of the Gods to you nor his connection to them other than the rumours that seemed always present.

Ohm looked away from the stars, ahead at the waterfall once more. You lifted your head from his shoulder, instead turning your attention fully on him. “The stars have always held my family’s fate. And the Gods can be very cruel with it.” Ohm’s voice was soft as he watched the rushing water nearby. “These gifts are a blessing, but a curse too. And Celestia is always watching.. I’m just..” Ohm sighed, closing his eyes. You frowned, bringing your hand up to brush some of his bangs from his face. “I’m tired of everything they ask of me. Everything the stars ask of me.”

You brushed your thumb over the scar under his eye, an action he leaned into almost too willingly. “Well.. Do you want to know how I feel about the stars?” You questioned, a chuckle escaping you at his sudden confused expression. Dull eyes meeting yours once more as he expectantly waited for you to continue. “I feel that no star in the galaxy shines as bright as you. Trust me on that one.” You followed your reassurance with a soft kiss to his cheek. Ohm hummed at the action, arm snaking around your waist to pull you closer to him.

“Hm, I do believe that is my line, moonlight.” Ohm kissed your nose, unable to help his smile in the action though. You giggled as he proceeded to pepper your face in kisses, leaving no place untouched. He ended with a soft chaste kiss to your lips, forehead resting against yours. “Let’s go back inside, you must be warm.” You wrapped your arms around his neck and he easily hoisted you up as he stood, adjusting his grip to hold you securely.

Ohm’s cold body was finally the reprieve from the summer heat you had been looking for as you comfortably rested your head against his shoulder. “Hey.. Ohm.” The man in question hummed in response as he opened the cottage door. “Thank you for telling me. About the stars, that is…” You trailed off and for a moment he was quiet as he stopped in the entrance way. You pulled your head from his shoulder to look at him and try to read his expression. He affectionately bumped his head to yours, a small smile on his face.

“The stars have plenty of stories. I’ll tell you them all someday.”

i fully support the mentally ill + hospital thing, but i think it should also be acknowledged that being mentally ill and dealing with mental illness doesn't excuse mistreating friends or people who care about you (and idk if you've been mistreated and that's why you're tired but,,that's an accountability thing for the people who did/didn't mistreat you)

a/n: i set it in a modern au to mix things up because my writers block is insane at the moment. I also removed Ayaka from the equation because having both siblings there felt very forced. let me know if y’all want me to write a part two or try a version with Ayaka.

warnings: everyone is ooc, cursing, no ayaka :(, one mention of vomit, tartaglia slander.

If you had been asked to describe Thoma 4 months ago, ‘oblivious’ would not be the word you’d have used.

But since then, college started up again, allowing your little crush from freshman year to go into full bloom. And with it came the realization that Thoma was, arguably, the second most clueless guy on this side of Teyvat, a strong competitor to poor Chongyun - archons bless him. Then again, Chongyun at least realized what people meant when they said “it’s a date then”, leaving him a flustered and anxious mess. Thoma, on the other hand?

“Yep, a date!”

“See you friday then”

“Study date? That’s cute haha, sure!”

If hair treatments weren’t so expensive, you’d be ripping yours out on the daily. And you were sure Ayaka and Ayato would as well, more so Ayaka, because Ayato seemed to be getting plenty of entertainment out of your misery (as he oh so nicely informed you one morning). So after a few weeks of Thoma missing more hints than Ajax misses shots in a basketball game, you decided that if he was going to be that clueless, you would be just as shameless. It started simple; you’d make an extra cup of matcha and bring it to college on the mornings where your paths usually crossed. It became common for you to carry his favorite snacks around. Thoma always seemed to forget to bring a grid notebook, how convenient that you just so happened to have one with you, every single day. You’d accompany him to the store, heck, you’d even offer to get his groceries for him sometimes, much to his relief (and Ayato’s amusement, although Ayaka took pity on you and restricted him from adding obscure stuff to the shopping list). Your affection amped up and to your amazement he welcomed it - but that amazement quickly turned to pure disappointment when you realized that his affections were all friendly.

Nothing seemed to work. Thoma was eternally grateful whenever you even offered him a pencil, but at no point did he realize what your intentions were. Not even when you ate Ayato’s odd food concoctions to spare Thoma’s stomach (if that didn’t warrant a marriage proposal, you don’t know what would). Around november, exactly 2 months after these shenanigans started, you began to wonder if maybe you had missed the hint. Maybe Thoma was trying to let you down gently this entire time. Maybe your persistence made him uncomfortable.

It was when this occurred to you, and you dialed back your affections, that Ayato began to get concerned. He couldn’t get a word out of you; you’d send him off with a sneer and an oddly specific threat, as you had always done, but your ever so confident behavior was missing. It was like watching a balloon slowly deflate.  

Eventually, the cotton candy haired shithead, as you lovingly called him at least once a day, took pity on you.

Thoma was on high alert when Ayato had beckoned him into the dining room and placed a bowl full of…something akin to udon soup in front of him. He brushed off Thoma’s questions with a wave of his hand and explained that he just so felt like cooking that evening, and how awful it was that Thoma wouldn’t trust him to cook a simple meal once in a while... Thoma blocked out his friends’ theatrics and glanced at the bowl again. There was absolutely nothing unsuspicious about this situation; he was sure that Ayato had some sort of agenda, but he couldn’t think of what.

He gathered some udon on his chopsticks, while inhaling the steam - the aroma seemed normal (for once). It wouldn’t hurt to try.

He mentally rolled his eyes once he realized how unnecessarily dramatic he was being; Ayato wasn’t a great cook, but he would never poison his friend (or anyone, for that matter, though Thoma suspected that to be false). The udon was shoved into his mouth, and he was pleasantly surprised by how balanced the taste was; it seemed like Ayato had added a bit too much sugar to the broth, but that was nothing compared to his usual fuck-ups.

“You look like I’m holding you at gunpoint, Thoma”

Said blond let out a nervous laugh. Ayato would have been less intimidating with a gun in that moment.

“Well, you usually only give me food when there’s something you want or when you, uhm…”

Ayato looked at him expectedly, though the smile on his face suggested that he knew what Thoma was referring to.

“When you... experiment, I guess!”

He was suddenly very grateful for the noodles, because it offered an escape from Ayato’s piercing gaze. Said man let out a chuckle, leaving them both in silence while Thoma gathered more noodles on his chopsticks, chewing them slowly. Ayato cleared his throat.

“So, how are you and y/n doing? Have you asked them out yet?”

To say that Thoma’s life flashed before his eyes would not be an understatement; either due to the panic taking over his body, or the fact that he was too busy trying not to choke to see through Ayato’s scheme. His friend let him finish coughing, smiling at him through closed eyes, while Thoma composed himself.

“Asked them out? What do you mean - we’re not together!”

“Yes, I realized that, which is why I’m wondering when you’ll finally stop acting like two nervous high schoolers in a shoujo manga.”

Thoma gave him a perplexed look.

“Am I supposed to take your silence as you telling me that you don’t like y/n? What a shame… guess I’ll have to let the other guy know that they’re available…” He feigned disappointment, while suppressing the smug look that was forcing its way onto his face when Thoma registered what he said. It wasn’t a lie, mind you - a lot of people approached your closest friends, asking them to set you guys up - though Ayato usually intimidated them too much to even try.

Of course, Thoma didn’t need to know that.

“The other guy? Which guy?” Poor Thoma was clearly trying to sound nonchalant but he was failing miserably. The panic was clear on his face; Had he missed the opportunity to ask you out? Had he done something to piss you off? You had been kind of distant for the past week or two…

A part of Ayato was tempted to just put his friend out of his very obvious misery, but seeing Thoma fumble over his words while inhaling a dish he clearly didn’t trust to be normal, was more entertaining than anything he had seen that week (and so far, he had seen another one of Ajax’ attempts at basketball). So Ayato let his dear friend suffer for a bit longer.

“Why the sudden interest? If you don’t like y/n, why do you suddenly seem in such a rush to find out?” “You know it’s not like that-”

“Well then why should I tell you? Wouldn’t it be quite rude for me to disclose details about y/n’s love life without asking them? And the guy seemed so nervous too… it would really just be awful for me to talk about him behind his back.”  Oh Thoma, I wish you could see your own face right now…it’s too bad that he would call my bluff if I pulled out my phone to take a picture.

“They’re my close friend too, I’m allowed to be curious-” “Then why don’t you ask them about it?”

Thoma’s eyes went wide as he tried to flip through the many excuses swimming around in his head; somewhere, some part of him knew that he couldn’t win against Ayato in…whatever this was. That reminded him; why was this brought up in the first place? He had a lot more questions, but those were the only words that slipped past his lips, because he knew Ayato could, and would, take apart every single thing he said to use as ammunition.

“How about you answer my question first? Why don’t you just ask y/n about it?” “That would just be…awkward, alright? Not all of us are completely shameless-” Thoma stopped himself, realizing he was starting to get a bit too defensive. He gave Ayato a worried look, an apology of sorts, but his friend just smiled.

“I’m going to pretend you don’t have a dire need for learning better comebacks. Now, do you want to guess why I even asked you this to begin with?”

Oh, Thoma had a lot of guesses, and most of them spelled disaster in his mind. Had he been too obvious? Y/n and Ayato were pretty close, maybe y/n had complained about Thoma to Ayato? Was y/n already with someone else? Were y/n and Ayato dating?!

The last thought nearly had him knocking the air out of his own lungs, because despite being great friends, Ayato was the last person Thoma would want to get into a crossfire with due to a hopeless crush of all things.

“Oh calm down, if you even brought up the idea of dating me to y/n, you’d probably get vomit on your shoes. Are there no rational braincells left in you?”

Great friends can read each other's minds, it seems…well, that would only apply to Ayato in that case.

Who, unbeknownst to Thoma, was giving up completely. He had had his fun - but his friend was clearly not taking the hint, so much to Ayato’s dismay, and for your sake, he had to get down to business.

“Archons - Thoma, y/n has a crush on you, and while it’s extremely funny to see them frustrated because of how fucking clueless you can be, it’s not funny to see them walk around looking like a kicked puppy for the same reason.”

Shock was fully displayed on Thoma’s face at Ayato’s sudden change in character, along with the revelation that you liked him, leading the other to sigh when the blond remained quiet.

“Get. It. Together. I did scare the other guy away - ” 

Thoma gave him a disapproving look, because scaring someone away could mean a lot of things in Ayato’s case, but he didn’t interrupt. 

“ - get that look off your face, it’s my job. Anyway, I did scare him away, but not everyone is that nervous about asking someone out. So get to it.”

Thoma still looked…doubtful. Maybe Ayato’s words came across harsher than intended - they were out of concern for the both of you, after all. He wiped the smirk off his face, as his features settled into a softer expression.

“Thoma. It’s insufferable how much y/n likes you. Haven’t you noticed how differently they treat you?” “Not really…they’re nice to me of course, but they’re like that with most of their friends.”

Ayato let out the most dramatic sigh he could muster, rolling his eyes and leaning back in his chair with a pointed glare. “Oh please, the last time y/n brought a drink for me at school was when i had a cold and refused to stay home. For the record, they don’t need a grid notebook on mondays either - they bring one because you forget to. You’re truly spoiled, I'm sensing favoritism here…”

A small smile broke out on Thoma’s face; he could tell when Ayato was being truly genuine. And despite the last comment seeming dramatic, that was just Ayato’s theatrics. He let out a laugh.

“I’m really stupid, aren’t I?”

“Well, can’t argue when you use logic for once…” Ayato smiled and finally picked up his own chopsticks. Much to his surprise, Thoma hadn’t accidentally taken a bite out of the chili he snuck into his food…

…It didn’t take long for him to realize that he had accidentally swapped the bowls. Thank fuck for his own spice tolerance. You definitely owed him now. Big time.

“Wait…you read shoujo manga?” Thoma suddenly questioned, and you turned your head to give the two a funny look.

Ayato nearly spat out his milk tea. Where the hell was this coming from? In his own opinion, he’d be less likely to read shoujo than Diluc (Thoma didn’t have the heart to tell him that literally no one would agree with that).

He quickly composed himself - they were on campus and he’d be damned before he let certain people see him make a fool of himself.

“No, where did that come from?” “Well, back when you were giving me that lecture you compared y/n and i to highschoolers in a shoujo manga, so I was just wondering…” “Thoma, I have a younger sister-” “A younger sister who doesn’t seem to have any manga on her shelves?” You interrupted him, a smirk breaking out on your face.

“And have you considered what she has in all those boxes in her closet?” He shot back.

“Well what do you have in yours?”

“Nothing of your interest, that’s for sure”

Neither you nor Thoma seemed to believe him. Ayato glared at the both of you.

“Thoma, you got the house keys, right?” He smiled.

“I believe I do, yes”

The keys fell into your hand with a small jingle, and you kissed his cheek with a ‘thank you’

“Y/n. Don’t you dare go through my closet.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll go through the rest of your room first!” You set off, leaving a laughing Thoma and a perplexed Ayato, who stood as if he was nailed to the ground.

(My head canon is that in a modern au, Ayato used to read a lot of manga when he was in his early teens, which is a rare source of embarrassment for him)
