As storytellers, there are so many pieces of our craft and I'm curious how you would rank each step of the process. Rank each of the following on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 lowest, 5 highest):

Setting up the scene (building sets, decorating, etc),

Posing the sims (creating / find poses, and setting up the sims),

Styling the sims (cc hunting, time spent in cas),

Writing the dialogue/story,

Editing the photos.

Send to three other story simblrs and get to know more about each others favorite and least favorite part of this crazy process!

Okay okay (takes deep breath and tries not to second guess the living hell out of myself)...

5. Writing the Story- For me everything stems from this point - the posing, scene setting, styling, editing - so it will always be the most important part of the process. It’s where ~the inspiration~ really happens, and without some sort of written starting point, I find myself rather adrift in the rest of the process. This is why I spend so much time in my writing/planning docs, making sure I have a cohesive vision/plan before jumping to the other stages.

4. Posing the Sims - I think especially as we have gotten into the ~emotional messiness~ of the story, this step has become increasingly important. I want to feel the writing come to life, and I really try and capture/impart that in the screenshots too. This means that seeing the most specific emotions or smallest of details has become so crucial, and so searching for that perfect pose to bring the written to life is really the next most important thing to me. Of course now that I'm making about 50% of my own poses, the time spent in doing so is rather substantial too 😅

3. Setting Up the Scene - I love a visual story running alongside the writing (both in the scene and the sims appearance). I think I only place this above styling because I'm more comfortable in build mode than I am in CAS. I spend alot of time cluttering sets and giving us little cues to things like the passage of time, character traits, or the overall mood in every little detail. Its something that I truly love doing and I will change things in the background for almost every scene (slowly replacing the green corn with dead stalks I'm looking at you).

2. Styling the Sims - This ties in with No. 3, except I feel like I don't focus on it quite as much as the set background. I do enjoy giving my sims a new outfit or hairstyle to show the progression of time or their character growing, and I love little scene details like shoes or gloves coming off, or when characters would have their hair unstyled, etc etc. I also love studying fashion magazines and reading articles, so I would include that here too (especially when it comes to CC hunting for pieces that can mimic historic dress). But even still, this step is often more just icing on top of the cake once it’s already baked.

1.Editing the Photos - What can I say, I'm not an editing girlie. About 90% of the time I let my reshade do all the work, and all I do in post is brighten up some of the photos (since I find Tumblr can make them quite dark). The other 10% consists of me maybe adding a sunlight filter or some dust, and very, very rarely if a scene calls for it (looking at you mega flashback) I will undertake more detailed editing. But let me tell yall, it is not my speed, and especially after such a heavily edited post, I shall keep this step aaaaaall the way at the bottom 🤣

5. Posing the sims (creating / find poses, and setting up the sims)

Like most people, I find posing incredibly tedious. I've been active on simblr as a storyteller for close to five years, and while a few recent mods have made the process much easier (shout out to Pose Alignment Interactions and Searchable Poses!) there's no getting around the clunky menus.

I've started making more of my own poses, which slows down the entire process. It's usually worth it, but sometimes, it's just more work.

4. Editing the photos

I don't actually do much editing (because I don't enjoy it very much). I have a pretty heavy-duty gshade preset, which saves me some time on the back end. However, I've been very inspired by both @hannahssimblr and @nexility-sims lately, and I've started spending a little more time making adjustments in GIMP. This recent post is a good example–I added the reflections in the car window using a transparent layer mask, and I made the phone screen glow by adding some blur and bloom to the screen. I don't think I'm ever going to be someone who paints shadows, highlights, and loose hairs onto every screenshot, but I'm definitely going to be doing more editing for the sake of "special effects!"

3. Styling the sims (cc hunting, time spent in cas)

I care about fashion insofar as it can be a tool for characterization and storytelling, but it's not something I'm interested in for its own sake. I don't spend much time CC-shopping, and I try not to spend much time in CAS.

Every so often I get really into it and lose a couple hours of my life to styling my sims, but it doesn't drive me to create in the way other parts of the game do.

2. Setting up the scene (building sets, decorating, etc)

A friend of mine recently introduced me to the concept of the Four Doors to Reading, which is a conceptual framework for understanding why people love reading: story, character, setting, and language. I initially thought "not me, I'm special and different" but then I realized I'm really into setting. I really love thinking about the history of a place or object (I give historical architecture tours on the weekend, fun fact) so I really enjoy building and decorating sets for my story.

Even though the royal gimmick means that my characters live in palaces and other grand environments, my favorite builds are smaller and dingier. I particularly enjoy making bedrooms, offices, and other intimate spaces because they allow for a lot of engaging character work. You don't see much of either space, but both Theo's bedroom and her desk at work are cluttered and untidy, which reflects one important aspect of her character–she projects a lot of confidence and polish, but she's not a perfectly composed Type A girlie, she's a literal mess.

By contrast, Kelly's apartment is tidier, but considerably more run-down (1, 2). She doesn't have Theo's connections or high-paying job, but she's a very meticulous person and she's made a clean and comfortable home for herself and her son.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, my favorite part of writing is the writing! Sometimes it's hard, but when it goes, it goes. It's the whole reason I do this at all!

1. Whats your favorite sims death?

Probably by laughter just because of the shock value I get cause I always forget sims can die that way lmao.

2. Alpha cc or mm?

Baby, I'm mixing everythinggggg. Sticking to just one thing has never been me and why not have the best of both worlds?

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?

No. It's never been that serious. It's just another way for story-telling like seeing my sims gain happy relationship weight, etc.

4. Do you use move objects ?

I wouldn't ever play this game if it didn't exist lol

5. Favorite mod?

Lumpinou's mods are literally phenomenal, I also like Wicked/Wonderful Whims for the attraction system and the buffs/pop-ups. Other than that, I like the newer self care mods that are coming out like the functional clutter kit by Cepzid, etc.

6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?

I'm pretty sure it was Seasons. Which, duh?

7. Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?

LIVing, the other way feels awkward to me but hearing it either way doesn't bother me.

8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? 

Currently a celebrity sim I made for an upcoming gameplay series, my god, I snapped lmao. keep a lookouttttt

9. Have you made a simself? 

I have....attempted. It freaks me out cause I forget what I look like lmfaooo

10. What sim traits do you give yourself? 

I always have the More Traits in CAS mod sooo: loner (introverted), creative, hates children (don't come for me, I'm team ftk lmao), geek, book lover

11. Which is your favorite EA hair color? 

The new true black they added awhile ago. I always hated that blue-black swatch with a burning passion lol or the new platinum blonde

12. Favorite EA hair? 

Baby I couldn't name one cause I never use them lmao. The waves they added for the guys is pretty cute though

13. Favorite life stage? 

Young adult for sureeeee. Adult too, I guess, considering there's really no difference between the two at the moment.

14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? 

I'm a CAS creature, ngl. But I enjoy playing all three.

15. Are you a CC creator? 

Nope. My brain cells cannot compute it lmao. I wish I was!

Also nope! But it's legit my third day out here so I'm not pressed. Excited to make some in the future!!

20. How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing? 

Chileeeeeee. I've been doing makeovers from sims I had in my library in the beginning and. the horror. omfg. But before I used to only be an Alpha girlie and now I use both so my sims can look cohesive with the game. I'm too lazy to make a save file all alpha.

Other than that, I love seeing sims have individual styles and be diverse so I try to make them each different and same thing for my builds.

21. Who’s your favorite CC creator? 

Wish I could list everyone, but heres some I don't think I could live without lol:

22. What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favorite so far? 

City living, hands down. I can't remember any save where my sims haven't lived there for a bit. So now that we can edit the windows I'm obsessed all over again. I think For Rent might eventually give CL a run for its money just because we can create our own rental lots now.

okay i’m gonna rant about this & it’s completely unrelated to kpop whatsoever.

i’m a sims 4 girlie, i make sims, download cc, i have all the packs so i spend a lot of money on this game. but why do i have to spend so much money…? i’m sorry, i find it rather annoying that i have to spend like £4.99 on a clutter set, when it could literally be patched into the game?? ea is literally scamming us and we’re okay with it😭??
