So yeah spent this week's class working on sinawali & figure-8 drills then those multi-step counter drills I had to write down a while ago, I quite like those
Grading's weekend after next, the instructor said the two of us at this level are welcome to try but can't guarantee we'll make it, we're almost there but still need some work, and to be completely honest I think I will look a lot better working through these with an instructor rather than the other guy because his technique is just straight up not as good and I have to try and compensate for it in my movements
I'm sure I can do all this shit, I wanna do more, I will be frustrated if I'm stuck at this level for another several months

Special Guest Holly S. Roberts - Author of Breach: A Terrifying Summer Adventure @hollysrobertsauthor - Great Escapes Book Tour #AuthorInterview #Giveaway
Tumblr media
Breach: A Terrifying Summer Adventure by Holly S. Roberts I am delighted to welcome Holly S. Roberts to Escape With Dollycas today! Hi Holly, Please tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born dyslexic and read my first complete book at twelve. I turned my love of reading into a career and purchased an independent bookstore in my twenties. I owned the store for twenty years but there was something caused by an experience in my childhood that I needed to do and I was running out of time. At age 45, I went to the police academy and lived my dream a few years later as a homicide and sex crimes detective. I became one of the leading experts in the state on predator behavior. On the advice of a very good therapist, I began writing and I haven’t stopped. I retired from law enforcement in 2014 and turned writing into a fulltime career. What are three things most people don’t know about you? I’ve been hiding my newfound love of Taylor Swift. No embarrassment but its special so I’ve been keeping it to myself. The only other secret I can think of is I haven’t missed a season of Survivor since the first episode. I’m running out of time to apply for the show but I can’t stop thinking about it. Maybe. What books/authors have most inspired you? There are so many but back in my bookstore days I was lucky enough to have a parttime gig for some major publishing houses and drive authors around the Phoenix area. Amazingly they paid me to do this. Three authors I spent time with inspired me to write: Lee Child, Jeffery Deaver, and Iris Johansen. I can’t thank them enough and I learned so much. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? Research is one of the best parts of being a writer and I like to challenge myself by learning more than I could possibly ever write in a book. My research can start as far back as a year before I write a word but it always continues through the first draft. Do you ever suffer from Writer’s Block? I really don’t. There are so many stories floating in my head if one isn’t working I can switch to something that does. What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer? Write until you become great at it. I’m still working on that part and I will until I write my last word. Study the best, find your own techniques. Listen to other authors but throw away what doesn’t work for you and grab what does. Write bad stuff, write silly stuff, write good stuff. Just write! When you are not writing what do you like to do? I’ve been involved in martial arts for many years and I love Sinawali sticks and practice religiously. I also love gardening which keeps me busy during the spring, summer, and fall. Then there are my two big goofy dogs who keep me company and give me slobber kisses when I’m down. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why? We own 100 acres off grid and it’s where I go to recharge. No phone service or internet but incredibly silent in its beauty. Oh and I hunt for rocks there, a small obsession of mine. What is next on the horizon for you? Before Covid, I owned a martial arts gym and taught self-defense to women. Sadly the gym didn’t survive. I’m looking forward to teaching again in someone else’s gym. I’m at a point in my writing career that I’m working on books I’ve wanted to write for years. That will continue and there’s a special book that may take a decade to finish but I won’t know until I put the first word on paper. Thank you Holly for visiting today. __________ Keep reading for more information about Holly's new book Breach. I read the book earlier this week and I can't wait to share my review with you. Be sure to come back Tuesday for it. I will tell you the story has stuck with me and I have pushed my husband to read the book too so we can discuss it.  About Breach Breach: A Terrifying Summer Adventure Psychological Thriller Setting - Off the coast of California Publisher ‏ : ‎Independently Published (March 22, 2024) Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 202 pages ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 979-8320606989 Digital: Wicked Story Telling (June 20, 2024) ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0CQYXJ3T1 Craving the vastness of the open sea, Kate and her family set out on a journey of forgiveness and healing aboard Ryan's Gift, their newly remodeled yacht. Tournament: Laura vs Shanyin
After a quick break, Shanyin did a few stretches as he waited for the next match of the mini-tournament to start. He was pretty sure Connor said it’d be a round-robin when they started, so that meant he could be fighting anyone next— meaning that he wasn’t too surprised when Laura stepped into the ring.
“Guess we’re doing partner fights this round?” Shanyin asked.
“Well, I kinda asked Tsubaki if I could trade with her.” Laura said, as she checked her guns. “I remembered we’ve got something we need to settle.”
Shanyin stopped stretching and raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? What?”
“This.” Laura watched as Shanyin narrowly dodged a swing from one of Atlagracia’s batons and put some distance between them.
“You owe me a rematch.” Laura said, twirling her weapons and settling into an eskrima stance.
“You’re gonna need to be a bit more specific, Laura.” Shanyin replied, drawing Shihu and settled into his own stance.
“Think really hard about it.”
A look of realization dawned on his face as he remembered exactly what she was talking about. It was sometime after the Fall of Beacon, and he was fresh out of the hospital. Laura challenged him to a friendly sparring match and naturally, he couldn’t turn her down. The problem was, he seriously overestimated how recovered he was, and he ate asphalt two minutes after they started. Needless to say, they both agreed to put the fight off until a later date.
Looked like that day was today.
Laura slowly closed the distance between the two of them, a baton pointed at her partner. “Remember now?”
“I do," Shanyin inched closer and tapped weapons with the gunslinger. “and I accept.”
The two of them locked eyes and smirked at each other. Shanyin struck first, but Laura checked his blade, parrying to the outside as she threw a pommel strike. Shanyin grabbed her wrist and the two of them butted heads.
Both staggered, but Shanyin recovered first and moved to set the pace.
Strike. Dodge. Parry. Counter.
Their next few exchanges flowed like a dance, one that Shanyin knew all too well, and he couldn’t help but think how great his partner looked while fighting, with the way her eyes lit up, and her legs that—
He barely managed to twist out of the way of a downward strike, spinning low for a leg sweep, shifting seamlessly into a rising thrust. Laura stepped back from the sweep and parried his dao. Shanyin gave a quick flourish and moved into a flurry of sword strikes.
Laura blocked each of his incoming strikes as was slowly forced back. She figured he was going for a ring-out, so she planted her feet and pulled them together into a deadlock, trying to push back to regain lost ground.
“Having fun?” Shanyin asked with a grin as he tried to push forward.
“Of course!” Laura said, smiling back at him as she turned one of her weapons back into a gun and fired a shot right past his ear. Seeing him flinch, that distraction was all she needed to pull him off balance and shove him to the ground.
“Cheap shot!” Shanyin grumbled, looking up at his partner.
“Maybe, but it worked, didn’t it?” Laura asked, stepping back to give him some space.
“Guess so.” He mused as he sat up, before changing Shihu into a rifle and opening fire. Only for Laura to quickly deflect the shots, weaving her batons in a sinawali pattern.
“You actually learned how to block bullets?” Shanyin asked, hopping to his feet “Nice!”
“Right? Took me forever to convince mom to let me learn.” Laura said, getting back into a ready stance. “You good to keep going?”
The young martial artist shook his head to clear the ringing from his ears and changed his weapon back to its dao form. “You really need to ask?”
The two of them circled each other for a few moments before stopping to size each other up. They knew how the other fought, and saw some of each other’s new tricks. Clearly, they’d need to focus if they wanted to claim the win.
One second passed.
Then two seconds.
At the count of three, they rushed back into the fray, dodging strikes just as quickly as they threw them.
As Laura pushed Shanyin on the defensive, he spotted something. An opening. One that might help him win the fight. He stepped in with a slash, only to see her smirk. And that’s when he knew—
Laura blocked the strike and a quick baton flick right between the eyes dazed him. Shihu was twisted from his hand as she shifted her feet. With one good twist of her hips, she slammed him back to the mats.
And goddamn, she looked good while doing it.
Shanyin snapped back to reality to see Laura had a foot on his chest and a baton pointed at his face, a mischievous smile on her face.
Laura laughed as she got off him and offered a hand. “You good?
“Definitely.” Shanyin could feel himself grinning as he took her hand and let his girlfriend help him back to his feet. “Guess I’m paying for our next date then?”
“Maybe, we can talk about that later,” Laura said, as the two of them headed for the sidelines. “But for now, let’s give Connor and Tsubaki a chance to catch up.”

The national sport of the Philippines' martial arts is Arnis. Eskrima and Kali are other names for it. Using knives, bladed weapons, sticks, and other improvised weapons, this sport genuinely places an emphasis on weapon-based warfare. Along with grappling, it also incorporates techniques for disarming weapons and hand-to-hand combat.
RA 9850, authored by Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, designates Arnis as the "national martial art and national sport." It implies that it will be required for courses like physical education in all schools across the nation. It will protect history. Arnis was really the first sport to be played during the yearly multi-sport festival known as Palarong Pambansa, in which participants from elementary and high schools competed. The fact is that Arnis is growing in popularity in other nations, including the US and Russia, and these nations are hiring Filipino martial artists to spread the word about this historic Filipino martial art. The president of Arnis Philippines, Raymond Soriano Velayo, claimed that "it existed here even before the Spaniards came. It is recognized.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This activity helps us develop self-control and promotes peace. Arnis comes in a variety of forms. They are pagkalikali, sitbattan, sinawali, garrote, eskrima, estocada, estoque, and other related games. Eskrima is a traditional martial art practiced in the Philippines that emphasizes the use of sticks, knives, and other improvised weapons in weapon-based combat. Estocada, estoque, and garrote, among other words, all refer to thrusts or grabs.
My mind immediately thought of all these reasons why Arnis is fantastic. If we travel back in time, Lapu-Lapu and his 1500 soldiers used swords, bows and arrows, and sticks to fight Magellan during the Battle of Mactan in Cebu, while the Spanish used muskets, swords, and lances. The majority of indigenous cultures are keeping this alive, particularly our legendary traditional guro / maestro or grandmasters.
The modern arnis that we have today is referred to as the Filipino version of stick fighting. Some outsiders are impressed by the beauty and distinctiveness of this Filipino martial art's motions and techniques. In the practice of arnis, rattan sticks and other weapons like knives, swords, and so on are employed. In every way, they are interchangeably connected. According to Velayo, who also serves as the president of the International Arnis Federation Inc., "arnis gives you self-confidence because you know that you can exercise something with control. It may strengthen your character and fill you with pride. It is the responsibility of Filipinos to instill nationalism and patriotism through the spread of arnis throughout the entire world.
Tumblr media
Arnis is a fantastic exercise for the heart and reflexes. Even though you won't be lifting anything heavy, the exercises and drills will nonetheless make your heart race. It's similar to an aerobics class in that you can walk about while receiving excellent upper body exercise. Arnis helps me to relax, meet new people, and hang out with them. Through this sport, I've gained self-control, self-worth, and the need to constantly better myself. I aim to participate at both the national and international levels in order to become one of the finest masters in arnis.

The people with whom I can gush to about my darling blorbos and the people whom I can cuddle irl don't overlap in any way and it's time I accepted that. There is no one singular person who is my perfect friend match; there is only 'close enough'.
If I want to invent an entire backstory dynamic about Purah and Robbie, or try to figure out if Korsica studied sinawali or escrima, it'll be via text or voice call with someone who lives in another time zone. If I want a bone-crushing hug that lasts a full minute with a genuine human, the one who gives it to me only knows as much about video games as they can skim from watching someone else play while they were scrolling Instagram on the couch.
Thinking that one single person can match up with me perfectly is false. Humans are too complicated and I am finally starting to understand this. I have spent all my life thinking that everything can be controlled and predicted and organized if I only knew the right pattern or formula. Turns out that's not true (and it's a real pain in the ass for me if I can't predict how a situation is going to go or how a person is going to act). You can never be 'perfect', only 'close enough.'
