Weekly Digimon Comic: Digimon Tamers - page 16.75

To reiterate what I just said over on the Baccano comic, sorry for the lack of weekly-ness in the weekly anime comics! Holiday stuff got the better of me too much to post new comics to Patreon, and until that happens I can't be posting less-new stuff to the rest of the internet. We SHOULD be up and running for good again, though.

Moving on, there are some who would say that this comic is flawed because I never actually showed the Digimon being referenced here. To those people, I counter that nobody should ever want to look at Sinduramon, and we are all better off with me not forcing that upon you. Okay, it's not THAT terrible, but I do think ol' Thunderchicken is one of the stupidest-looking of all the Devas, and there's some fierce competition for that title.

So I found some old vhs tapes from when my aunt recorded cartoons on tv for me as a little kid, and I got an old vcr to working so I can watch them.

I really love those YouTube videos of similar recordings, like old Cartoon Network blocks such as Miguzi or Toonami Midnight Run. It's interesting because they're living time capsules of the time that are maybe lone collections of lost media.

One of the tapes I saw so far is a Fox Kids block of 3 Digimon Tamers episodes- specifically the episodes containing Sandiramon, Sinduramon, Pajiramon, Vajramon, and Rapidmon. Some of the dubbing is just... *chef's kiss* terrible in the best way- but the really interesting stuff is seeing what commercials or bumpers happen between them.

I reckon this happened sometime after 9/11, because there are bits of Rika, Henry, a Ren and Stimpy styled character, and maybe another I'm forgetting that basically talk about how you- presumably a child- can be more patriotic, such as volunteer work, writing letters to firemen, etc, and it really emphasized the Fox part of Fox Kids in the strangest ways- especially hearing Rika, who is very Japanese and lives in Japan even with dubisms, go ooc to talk about that kind of stuff is strange and jarring to say the least in a bit that is played 100% sincere.

Then of course you get original trailers for Monsters Inc and Harry Potter- both in their theater runs I believe- and a commercial for a 2d, hand animated Mickey Mouse Christmas special. Commercials for the 2000s era GI Joe toys, Cell Saga DBZ toys of SS Vegeta, SS Goku, SS "Loyal" Gohan, and Teen Trunks; Transformers RID toys that combine, other Fox Kids shows that strangely revolve around monster collecting- probably in competition with Kids WB Pokemon at the time.

Genuinely interesting stuff tbh. I'm gonna look into ways I can maybe digitize these, because they're cool time capsules.

Digimon Tamers - Episode 16

This episode was cute, but not much happened. Kinda a slice-of-life moment with an obligatory Devas battle. The best part was all of the gif-able moments of digimon frolicking :-D

Notes:

IDK why they bothered with that scene of Ruki throwing Renamon an energy drink at the beginning lol. It was like they realized they forgot to write them into the episode and tossed that in at the last second.

Ain't no way the teachers just missed a giant dinosaur out in the open like that lol. They were barely even trying to be sneaky, especially in that picnic scene where Guilmon was obscured by a convenient tree, but only at a very specific angle.

I was gonna say "Is this a thing that Japanese elementary schools do?" but then I remembered that my American elementary school definitely had a summer camp thing that everyone participated in lol. Very nice. I think every kid should experience camping at least once.

Lol @ every single child in Takato's class having an animal backpack. I feel like IRL those would not fit enough to be remotely useful on a camping trip.

I feel like HYPNOS is just totally useless to the point where their presence pisses me off. They literally just go "oh...there's a wild one" and then do nothing until the kids deal with it. Thanks for your contribution.

Guilmon, Terriermon and Culumon being the best of buddies was very cute and so was all of the kids' determination to make sure they were having a good time.

Really not sure what Takato and Jian hoped to accomplish by ignoring Sinduramon. Did they think he was just gonna go away or...?

Another pretty goofy looking enemy digimon, although I kinda like this one. Reminds me of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg lol. So I guess these are all based on Buddhist/Hindu concepts and also coincide with the Chinese zodiac? That's cool, I like it when mons have a themed "series."

A little confused as to when the Devas started because I haven't really been paying too close attention. I believe this is only the 3rd one, but I guess I could have missed one (tiger, snake, rooster...)

What was up with the random evil owl? Can Sinduramon control animals or something?

I appreciated the dual-screen digivolutions and card slash sequences. Feels less like they're there for padding when they do that.

Last but not least is kindness

Wormmon/Bucchiemon evolve into Luminamon and Cherubimon Virtue, a white and red fairy with long antennae turning into a white and pink angel with long ears.

V-mon/Kangarumon was tough, but I picked MachGaogamon because what is a kangaroo if not a bipedal dog that jumps really good? MachGaogamon is a punch battler with a blue and white head and a visor and big fists. Then Gakoomon is another punching guy with a visor and he also has a little buddy like Kangarumon's doll. It's not ideal, but we don't exactly have more marsupials.

Hawkmon/Toucanmon become Sinduramon, another bird in a shell, and Daipenmon, another funny bird. I'm not in love with it, but I guess it works.

Armadimon/Chamelemon become Majiramon and Cannondramon. Majiramon is a green reptile with a long tail and the same legs and underbelly as Chamelemon, but Assaultmon or Tankdramon would also work here. Cannondramon is a militaristic reptile and while it's not green anymore, its colors are close to Armadimon's and I don't think Cannondramon is a terrible ultimate for Armadimon in general.

Patamon/Prairiemon is where I really cooked, I chose Andiramon Deva and Diarbbitmon. While Prairiemon isn't a rabbit, it's a brown mammal with long ears which creates a very solid connection. Especially when I had a better idea for Bitmon.

Tailmon/Opossumon gave me the same challenge as Kangarumon. Opossumon is very mouse-ish physically, so I picked Kumbhiramon. I struggled on the ultimate for a while because I couldn't draw any strong connections. I settled on Sakuyamon because it makes a parallel with what I did for Patamon. And it does have gloves and boots on a black body(suit).

In Digimon Tamers, Zhuqiaomon was solely responsible for the creation of the Deva, who it sent to abduct Calumon. However, in broader Digimon lore, it is but one of four Digimon sovereign (a group of Digimon who previously appeared in Digimon Adventure 02, with the focus on Azulongmon) each of whom rule over three of the Deva.

After meeting Shu-Chong "Suzie" Wong, Antylamon defected to the side of the protagonists.

The Deva are all based on signs of the Chinese Zodiac.

Azulongmon of the East rules over Mihiramon (the tiger), Antylamon (the rabbit), and Majiramon (the dragon).

Ebonwumon of the North rules over Vikaralamon (the pig), Kumbhiramon (the rat), and Vajramon (the bull).

Baihumon of the West rules over Makuramon (the monkey), Sinduramon (the chicken), and Caturamon (the dog).

Finally, Zhuqiaomon of the South rules over Sandiramon (the snake), Indaramon (the horse), and Pajiramon (the sheep).

Embodying the center of the Earth is Huanglongmon.

I mean we’ve technically had Muchomon as a Partner before, assuming the ReArise lines was the Tri partners, but that one was Akatorimon > HippoGryphonmon > Zhuqiaomon; not Kokatorimon

It is hilarious though that the two times we’ve seen Muchomon as a partner, it’s digivolved into a right big chicken albeit not the one the joke originally came from:
