Oppan Ep 1 Has Me On The Floor

I was away for a bit visiting family, and then came back to a massive backlog of QL, and finally caught up on my list of currently airing shows today so that I could watch Ossan no pantsu ga nandatte ii janai ka, which is only available for watching because it is being subtitled by the incredibly generous @isaksbestpillow. Thank you Siiri!

Friends, I sobbed. This show has me in a chokehold. I had to stop and collect myself before I could write this.

The premise is that an out-of-touch dad is struggling with his familial relationships falling apart and he doesn't understand why, until he talks to a friend of his son's and he starts to get perspective about how to change.

This show is so well done! The way it sets up his toxic masculinity, homophobia, misogyny, and general outdated values, and how his attitudes have a negative impact on everyone around him but he can't understand what he's doing wrong, is perfect. He clearly genuinely loves his wife and kids, and wants to be in their lives, and be a good coworker for his colleagues too, but he sucks.

Makoto starts the show by being very solidly clear that he's in the right and everyone around him is in the wrong, but that gets shaken as his relationship with his son especially begins to crumble. His son is struggling, and it is killing Makoto that he can't find the words to help. Kakeru has stopped going to school for the past month, he barely leaves his room, and he won't talk to his dad.

When Makoto walks in and finds a kid who his wife has informed him is gay sitting with Kakeru and painting each other's nails, he loses it. Daichi (the gay kid) is surprisingly unaffected by the blatant homophobia, and tries to take the moment to normalize being gay for Makoto. Kakeru eventually gets so mad at his father that he kicks him out of his room, which hurts Makoto's feelings. This was the first moment I got misty, because of Daichi being so self-assured and willing to take on this teachable moment, and then because Kakeru stood up for his friend. [We don't know what's going on with Kakeru at this point sexuality-wise, but he's been very fixated on feminine makeup, and clearly afraid for his father to know about any of it.]

Later, Daichi finds Makoto drinking sadly alone on a staircase and sits down to have a conversation with him, and offers to help him 'update' his values so that he can reconnect with his family. This is where I sobbed. Daichi is clearly motivated to help for his own reasons; he sees a dad trying his best but failing, and he cares about Kakeru and wants his friend to have a good relationship with his dad because Daichi didn't get the chance to have one with his own (he was raised by a single mom). He takes the time to explain things to Makoto in ways that will get through, and this is a gift that Makoto recognizes and grasps with both hands.

Makoto acknowledges the truth that he has to change if he wants his relationships to change, accepts that this means he will have to do the work, and apologizes to his son. It's a clumsy apology with a false start, which makes it feel even more real. This is not a magical panacea, but the start of a difficult journey that he's undertaking out of love and a desire to be loved.

Personal shit on the table, my dad still doesn't know I'm queer. He told me and my brother to never tell him if we were, and I've listened. I stepped away from my family for years (and into dire straits for awhile), and when I let them back into my life, I decided for myself that I wasn't going to hide who I am but I wasn't going to come out to him either, because he hasn't earned it. When we're in shared spaces, we exist together in a kind of limbo that is not unlike the one at the start of this show. So to watch a dad who recognizes that he's losing his kid due to his own prejudices and actively try to change to repair the relationship is hitting some deep, old wounds, in a good way.

My own wounds aside, this show is so, so good already, and I'm so grateful that I get to watch it! It feels very purposeful, is very brilliantly told, with complex and relatable characters, and all of the acting is spectacular. And for those who don't want to watch if the gay character's sexuality is sidelined, Siiri has confirmed that Daichi is in a relationship and that the show spends time with him and his boyfriend as well (looking forward to getting there!). 1. “Gintoki is introduced to us as a depressed twenty seven year old dealing with ptsd who first adopts Shinpachi after protecting him from Amanto (aliens, who have somewhat taken over earth) who were harassing him, which led to Shinpachi losing his job, and Gintoki having to help him rescue his sister Otae from the family’s debtors. Shinpachi comes to work for Gintoki as Odd Jobs, soon joined by Kagura (an amanto herself with super strength who was working as part of gang prior to Shinpachi and Gintoki helping her leave) Kagura leaves in his house and later Gintoki allows her to get a pet dog. It’s made clear that these three are a family and more than a few episodes make it clear that Kagura seems Gintoki as her earth father (her bio dad, the strongest man in the universe, goes around the galaxy fighting monsters) and Shinpachi feels a familial connection to him as well. There’s also Hashida, a baby who looks a lot like Gintoki, whom Gintoki takes care of when the custody battle over Hashida becomes an actual battle. This includes drinking together, tying the baby to his back while fighting his way to Hashida’s mom, and Hashida crying when Gintoki leaves, after promising they’ll share a drink when Hashida is older. In a similar vein is Seita, a street kid who tries to pickpocket Gintoki but gets robbed in return and ends up working for Gintoki’s landlady (Gintoki’s own adoptive mother) and being taken care of by her and the odd jobs family as a whole, before Gintoki discovers Seita’s mother is Hinowa, the Sun of Yoshiwara and its highest ranking courtesan, and fights Housen, a crime lord who fought Kagura’s father for three days and nights until they considered it a draw, and kills him, just so Seita and Hinowa can reunite. During the timeskip late in the series, we discover after seemingly defeating the Big Bad Utsuro (an immortal who formerly was Gintoki’s adoptive father and teacher Shouyou) Gintoki spent two years raising the reincarnated Shouyou as a baby, before being given his heart to prevent Utsuro’s followers from taking it. These are just the most notable examples, pretty much any character younger than Gintoki gets taken care of or helped by him in a way, including Kagura’s older brother, temporary member of Odd Jobs Pirako, and even to an extent youngest Shinsengumi member Okita Sougo. Gintoki is positioned as acting as the same adoptive parent role as his own adopters (Shouyou and his landlady Otose) are, taking on similar burdens and making, or trying to make) similar sacrifices as well. He can be really soft with kids at times, and has at least once carried Kagura and Shinpachi away from a fight on his back.”

You only met him a few months ago, yet with how close you were, you would think you’ve known each other for years. He was kind, and easy to get along with. He was a fantastic father, and truthfully, you couldn’t figure out the reason he may have gotten divorced. He had told you “the spark ran out,” but you didn’t believe that — not with how charming he was. How could anyone “lose the spark” for someone like him? Nevertheless, you didn’t pry, it wasn’t your business anyway. 

And yet, after a few drinks, you find yourself asking questions. Wondering if he was truly happy, or if he ever got lonely. And you find yourself getting answers — learning that despite the few benefits that came with being single again, he genuinely missed what he used to have. He tells you how the weekends when the kids aren’t with him are lonely, and that he reminisces about the sweet moments shared before things ended. So when you end up on his bed that night, whimpering out his name as he nibbles on your neck, you don’t feel so bad for catching feelings for him. 

He took his time with you, as if he wanted to savor the moment — kissing every inch of your skin, softly groping your sides, murmuring praise as you take his thick fingers inside you. Truthfully you were overwhelmed, taken aback by how sweetly he was treating you. It was to be expected, but to truly experience it had your head in the clouds.

The scruffy feeling of his stubble against your neck as he bruises your skin only added to the jumpy feeling in your stomach. Every stroke of his cock against your walls had you seeing stars. You were certain no one’s ever made you feel the way he did, making you feel like you were the center of the universe. 

Daichi could say the same about you, confidently say that no matter how much experience he may have, no one has stirred up this feeling in him before. Even in spite of the children he had, being here with you somehow exceeded the way he felt with his last partner, even if he wouldn’t admit it.

And that would be why, in the heat of the moment, when your legs are locked around his waist and you’re moaning in his ear, he freezes. He didn’t plan to and he didn’t have time to ask, but your sweet mewls in his ear provoked him. Before either of you know it, he’s cumming deep inside you, panting into the crook of your neck about how you’re his good girl.

He apologizes, softly kissing your neck as you both come down from your high. You can’t do anything but smile, kissing his shoulder when his weight falls onto you. You both fall silent, not having the energy to speak anymore. Neither of you mind the quietness that now fills the room, though. For now, you bask in the afterglow, catching your breath and leaving the conversation of “where does this leave us” for some other time.

Hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts on your latest chapter as well as a deep dive on your characters as well.

Daichi my guy. You knocked up yo baby mama, abandoned her and left to raise yo kid BY HERSELF and you're upset that her mama and best friend are acting cold towards you. Boi miss me with that shit. You can but yeast in the oven and expect steak to come out. And it sure as hell doesn't seem like you understand the consequences of yo actions. On top of that you have a whole ass family (allegedly) and you wanna reconnect with Ami? Granted if the story does confirm that Daichi does in fact have a wife and a kid(s) that means he had the choice to step up and he could have stepped up. But he chose NOT TO. Like how can you say you want to be in yo kid's life SIX YEARS LATER while you already started something with someone else DURING THOSE SIX YEARS. And I'm curious to know why he waited six years to want to reconnect with Ami.

Kenji, my man, my man telling Daichi of like: "I'm hoping she'll grow out of having bad taste in sports teams just like she did her bad taste in... well, everything else." COLDEST LINE EVER. I WAS SCREAMING AND KICKING MY FEET. And I can't stop grinning. And that cute little moment with Chiho tells me he's still the best dad even after Emi.

My takeaway from this chapter is the importance of having people in your corner supporting you, and Ami has that. Mama Wakita, despite her disappointment in her daughter's choices, chose to be in her daughter's corner coz she, as a mother herself, understands what Ami is going through. And kudos to Juri for being a true best friend and a real one. And Kenji? Do we even have to explain? Like, really?

Many single mums/parents in Ami's position don't always have that luxury of having a support system. Half the times family and friends would just welcome back the absent parent with open arm with not consideration for the single parent's feelings because "they at least stepped up". It's kinda sad that social media is treating single parenthood, especially single motherhood, like it's some kind of achievement and a flex. It's admirable being able to raise your kid on your own without the other parent present you still NEED people in your corner. You NEED your own community coz believe it or not, single parenthood can be lonely at times, not just for you but for your kid also.

2. Fun fact about Kenji’s line, I originally wrote, “I’m hoping she’ll grow out of her bad taste in sports teams just like she did her bad taste in men,” but even I gasped while re-reading it so I edited it because a more subtle jab is even more exciting than a direct one!

3. Kenji is the best dad! You’ll will be seeing more of him and Chiho in today’s chapter! I actually just took a break from writing to answer this ask.

4. Love your little takeaway because that supportive dynamic between Ami, her mom and Juri was a big part of this chapter fr😭 They may not have liked that Daichi was there but they understood and supported her still.

I for one have experienced the impact of a good community. Life can be so exhausting sometimes. We really do need people behind us.

My Roman empires is when i was reading a daisuga wattpad book in the 2020 era. The book was a single father au where Daichi was the dad and Kageyama the son the mom had left them and when they were gonna reveal who the mom was EVERYONE in the comments was hating on Michimiya because they thought she was the mother. When they found out it was Kiyoko and she left to be with Yachi everything was cool because hating on the love interest that ‘gets in the way of the mlm ship’ is ok.

Golden Kamuy: this is a tough one for me, because one of the things I love the most about this story is just how well written and intriguingly fleshed out each character is, especially in relation to eachother and to the story itself, but I think I will go with the OG who captured my interest right away, Tsukishima Hajime. Yes we love an unhealthy and obsessive relationship with authority and sense of duty, throw in the belief of living on borrowed time and therefore a life that can't possibly belong to you anymore, and I'm all yours.

Haikyuu!!: the thing is that I've always been IN love with Daichi, but Oikawa is the one who I have always felt the strongest for. A proud dramatic overachiever who cares too much but pretends like he doesn't, genuinely passionate about what he loves to the point it risks consuming him; a tough bitch as much as a sensible nerd. I care for him a lot.

HunterxHunter: Gon, my precious little feral kid who gets traumatized over and over again, but still decides to be kind. What I love the most about him, though, is that he is never portrayed to be inherently good; he is stubborn and occasionally selfish because of his nature as much as because he is just 12 y/o and he doesn't know any better, which is what makes him as lovable and charming as he is.

Helluva Boss: I know I'm not too loud about it, but I have been utterly in love with this show for a good couple months now, as well as with the helluva boss himself, Blitzø. He is a raunchy little imp who severely struggles with self-love and therefore does his best to push away every opportunity he has at a good and healthy relationship because who could possibly love him, right? but he genuinely TRIES, and sometimes he succeeds too, plus, he's still always there for the one he cares about. and honestly, he is just so fucking funny, he has my entire heart.

Dungeon Meshi: Laios, the supposedly knight archetype who does eventually fulfill his destiny, but in the messiest way, unwilling, and at the cost of what he loves the most. There are so many characters I genuinely like in this story, but I am too fascinated and amused by Laios' obsession with monsters and how it makes him so smart and so dumb at the same time to not love him the most. I'm sorry, apparently I have a particular liking for people who are extremely passionate about what they love.

Star Trek: I was unsure about who to choose between Spock and Kirk until the very end, but I have to say Spock. His double heritage and the way he navigates it, all the suffering and treasures he finds in feeling less and more, misunderstood and capable of understanding more than anyone else the multiplicity that deeply characterizes the universe he explores and is so curious about. Rarely I have empathized so much with a character before. Plus, he can be a dramatic bitch, Spirk divorce ark Spock is my favorite Spock.

Tiger & Bunny: honestly both of them, but for the sake of the game I shall say Bunny a.k.a. Barnaby Brooks Jr., my favorite traumatized model face babe with deeply rooted trust issues who completely falls in love with a hot loser single dad who has the tendency to help everyone else but himself. A match made in heaven. And me with them

LOTR: Frodo Baggins. No one understands him like I do....

FMA: my heart is divided between Olivier Armstrong and Riza Hawkeye, because what's not to love about strong, gorgeous, mature, cunning, intelligent, trust-worthy, powerful women? Different flavors, but equally delicious.

DAI — dai's relationship with his dad is good! they're incredibly similar and dai has always looked up to t'velle as a role model and an inspiration and a source of wisdom. it's been a little strange to come home and have that moment of realizing his dad is also just A Guy. dai's relationship with his other parent is largely nonexistent, as they were an earth djinn who used their final Wish to wish daichi into existence as a fuck-you to dai's horrible grandmother, and dai has some very complicated feelings about that—some pride, some guilt, some grief. he's been reading through musa's diary and it's bittersweet to see parts of himself reflected in someone he's never going to get to meet. beyond that, dai gets on well with his uncle, does not get on well with his grandmother (the bitch), and is fond of (if often exhausted by) his cousin lhoris. (and of course, he loves his other dad pelor so much, and historically he's gotten on well (if awkwardly) with his other other dad tempus) MINAH — minah was absolutely a daddy's girl growing up and wanted to be like him and do him proud. her family got along well, though they had their usual spats and arguments. unfortunately her parents are dead, so there's not much of a relationship anymore. (she misses them horribly) NARAYANI — rani's birth clan is gone and she never knew her parents, but she was taken in and raised by clan lavellan as a sort of collective village+child thing, and she loves—loved—them all very much. she was closest to one of the elders who was something of a grandmother to her and really took her under her wing, but she considered the entire clan her family. it wasn't their fault she grew apart, not really. she just spent so long being the thing that protected them that she forgot to be their da'ayani

DAI — insist on things being true when they aren't. the more inane and stupid the better. dai would have hated the lolz so random era of internet humor. MINAH — complain about helping with things that everyone else is doing. she doesn't mind some kvetching but there's a time and a place, y'know? also, nosiness NARAYANI — every single unthinking, unconsidered word out of a shem's mouth is annoying to her. "the elves" she's already tuning you out.

54. What is their current hairstyle? What have been some of their past hairstyles? Which was their favorite hairstyle?

DAI — currently he's got cornrows capped with little gold beads and a sorta black/gold ombre thing going on (it gets lighter at the ends). in the past he's had long locs, a buzz cut, and natural hair. when he has a minute to restyle it, he's gonna go back to locs, but shorter this time. this vibe MINAH & NARAYANI — answered!

62. Have they ever been betrayed? How did it affect their ability to trust others?

DAI — he's definitely been screwed over and is far less trusting of people than he was before the campaign, but I'm not sure he's been in a position to trust anyone enough for being turned on to feel like a betrayal. he felt a little betrayed when zaref first revealed he was a void tiefling/got them trapped in the void, but he's level-headed enough to know that wasn't actually a betrayal. MINAH — yes. as we've all seen, she's totally normal about it (girl has intense trust issues) NARAYANI — absolutely, but she's slow to take it personally. she's got plenty of other stuff going on that makes her wary of trusting others; past betrayals don't change much. (she also insists—once, firmly, when someone brings it up, and then it never comes up again—that what solas did wasn't a betrayal. it was a lot of other things, but she never felt betrayed by his actions. she is, perhaps, a little biased)
