Gintoki wonders how he got here.
The park is nearly empty at this time. A few children still run around the playground nearby and a couple strolls down the lonely path hand in hand, but the sun is already setting and most people are rushing home to enjoy dinner with their families. It’s too hard to decipher the letters of his new Shounen Jump by now and he gave up on reading anyway, the magazine long forgotten in his lap as he watches Kagura and Shinpachi chase around the meadow.
They’re laughing loudly, dodging each other’s hands and hiding behind trees and bushes, sometimes even jumping over Sadaharu who’s been dozing off since they arrived and seemingly doesn’t mind them climbing over his back. Every once in a while his left ear twitches at the sounds of their giggles and his eyes crack open to follow the kids dashing around his sleeping figure before he falls back into his slumber.
“I think we should head home soon, it’s already getting dark,” you mutter beside him. Gintoki nods blankly, only turning his head when you dig the tip of your finger into his cheeks and although his expression doesn’t change once his gaze meets yours, his heart still jumps in his chest at the sight of you wrapped tightly in his white yukata to protect yourself from the cold breeze sweeping through the park. You look so beautiful and there’s nothing he can do to stop himself from staring at you like a creep when you brush a strand of your hair behind your ear and give him a gentle smile before you scoot closer to him and snuggle into his side.
Sometimes, he’s convinced that this is just a figment of his imagination. It’s in moments like these when everything seems just a little too perfect to be real that he wonders how he got here, how his life turned out to be so beautiful after everything he’s done — the kids are laughing and you’re reaching out to grab his hand, soft and warm against his skin, a small reminder that yanks him back into reality.
“Gin, are you okay?”
“What? Yeah, don’t worry ‘bout me. I’ll get the brats, you stay here,” he croaks, shaking his head to get rid of his thoughts and turning to call out for Shinpachi and Kagura right as she trips over her own feet. “Oi! Be careful—”
The words leave his mouth before he can even think, but it’s too late.
Kagura shrieks and instinctively raises her arms to shield herself from the impact before she lands face first in the dirt and Shinpachi, who’s been grinning from ear to ear only mere seconds ago nearly stumbles into a tree when he hears her fall. Worry is written into the crease of his brows as he whips his head around to check if she’s alright, even though his glasses have fallen into the grass and his vision has turned blurry.
“Shit, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Kagura groans as she fights to get up. Mud sticks to her pale cheek, a few leaves have found their way into her tousled hair and for a moment, everything seems to be fine until her eyes search his. Tears cling to her lashes and her bottom lip begins to tremble, barely holding in a sob and Gintoki is about to jump to his feet in panic, but you’re faster.
Rushing past him, you crouch down beside the girl and pull her into a hug, one hand cupping the back of her head and the other one resting on the small of her back to draw soothing circles. Small hands wrap around your chest and dig into the yukata engulfing your body, then she buries her face in your shoulder — she’s crying, sniffling and whimpering quietly as if she isn’t quite sure whether she’s even allowed to show weakness.
Gintoki knows she’s a Yato and she endured injuries much worse than this, but at this moment, as you rock her back and forth, comforting her with loving words and a tight hug, he is once again reminded that she’s just a kid. Much like Shinpachi, she was never allowed to be just that — and like him, they had to grow up too fast, never had a childhood that wasn’t defined by blood and violence, and never had someone who looks out for them until they met him.
And look, he doesn’t really think he’s made for this whole single dad thing he’s got going on since he picked them both up, but he’s been trying his best to make them feel safe and loved, and even though it’s quite exhausting to keep them both fed when his own wallet is empty, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
He does have to admit that he’s grateful you came along though. Somehow, you completed their little family and it becomes so much clearer to him as he watches you inspect Kagura’s injury, the fabric of her pants ripped and soaked with the blood from her grazed knee, carefully dabbing the wound with a tissue to clean away any dirt.
She’ll get a bandaid at home, a pretty pink set with little dogs on them he got from the store a while ago, in case his kids got hurt because that’s what they are now — they are his kids and this is his family, not the one he was born with, but the one he chose.
“C’mon, let’s go home,” you encourage Kagura, grabbing her smaller hand to help her onto her feet. “I’ll buy you sukonbu on our way, okay?”
He groans loudly. These brats will cost him an arm and a leg and his pockets were already empty before they even came along.
“Right, Gintoki?” You give him a pointed look as if you could read his thoughts and he nods defeatedly, already searching for some coins in his worn wallet. Whatever makes you happy.

This is probably one of the first instances of him showing how much he truly loves the kids, and I'm obsessed.

shouka sonjuku trio & the yorozuya kids (BFY ver.)
aight imma ramble nonsense bc ao3 is still down and my life is nothing but distant memory JSDAHFJDS
we all know how it went: shouyou was taken from his kids, one he permitted himself possibly because he was possibly convinced that they would be safer if they were the farthest from him, seeing as he knew who he has to protect them the most from. it may also be that the vow of change that he took since oboro was too strong that he never thought of retaliation, thinking that in doing so would mean betraying oboro; even when that meant being together with his remaining kids. truth be told, if shouyou wanted to fight; he would've emerged victoriously. the man could take on the entire universe and get whatever he wishes, and yet he yielded. but whatever reason it may be (we weren't given closure on this one :3), it led his students further into the hell he was protecting them from. then he fell, "died" at the very hands of his own precious students. and that ripped them apart, again no closure as to what really pushed them but one could make a few guesses. be it the fact that takasugi and zura couldn't stand that they were to weak and had to let gintoki carry all the burden, or gintoki's guilt eating him alive thinking he took shouyou from zura and takasugi (other shit but that's a whole other fic JSGDJGD) and although eventually zura and gintoki found their way back to each other, rebuilding their bond and forming many others, shouyou's capture and alleged demise brought on far too many scars for anyone to truly recover (especially takasugi). but they try, anyway. zura and gin at least.
then we have kagura and shinpachi in be forever yorozuya, who fell apart because just like his sensei, gintoki disappeared. gintoki had them running in circles after him, desperately trying to find him just like how he, katsura, and takasugi led a war in order to reach shouyou. but when time passed and gintoki's death was easier to accept than whatever helplessness kagura and shinpachi felt, they fell apart as well; went on separate ways and had growing animosity towards each other, the same way gintoki and takasugi (at least) had, albeit lesser than that of the older men.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
similarly, both shinpachi and kagura kept a piece of gintoki with them; like how zura and takasugi carried their shouyou-sensei's handwritten text book safely tucked against their chest (i am under the impression [and this is canon to me idc] that both men had never left it off their persons, always carrying it wherever they went to) which eventually shielded them from fatal blows that could've claimed their lives or at least seriously injure them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when the end nears shinpachi and kagura came together for gintoki; like what gintoki, zura and takasugi did for shouyou in the latter chapters of the silver soul arc/the final movie.

I’ve seen Gintoki doing dad things being discussed and I need to bring Katsura doing mom things to the table. Him reading his kindle fire with glasses on and font size at max. Him gasping like he’s been drowning upon being woken up. Typing with one finger and getting mad when someone tries to help. I needed to put this out there.

And yep, this is the result of a Gintama binge. I lived for Dadtoki and Kagura moments when either they were totally in sync or they would antagonize the hell out of each other.
If you're thinking, "dang this blog's art style is all over the place" then you're not alone. I also question why I can't stick to one style across fandoms.

Round 2, Match 9: Gintoki Sakata vs. Eithan Arelius
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Gintoki Sakata: Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura, his own de aged mentor Shouyou, Hashida Kanshichirou, and Seita
Eithan Arelius: Yerin Arelius, Wei Shi Lindon Arelius. Also maybe Akura Mercy and Ziel of the Wasteland
Propaganda under the cut!
Gintoki Sakata:
“Gintoki is introduced to us as a depressed twenty seven year old dealing with ptsd who first adopts Shinpachi after protecting him from Amanto (aliens, who have somewhat taken over earth) who were harassing him, which led to Shinpachi losing his job, and Gintoki having to help him rescue his sister Otae from the family’s debtors. Shinpachi comes to work for Gintoki as Odd Jobs, soon joined by Kagura (an amanto herself with super strength who was working as part of gang prior to Shinpachi and Gintoki helping her leave) Kagura leaves in his house and later Gintoki allows her to get a pet dog. It’s made clear that these three are a family and more than a few episodes make it clear that Kagura seems Gintoki as her earth father (her bio dad, the strongest man in the universe, goes around the galaxy fighting monsters) and Shinpachi feels a familial connection to him as well. There’s also Hashida, a baby who looks a lot like Gintoki, whom Gintoki takes care of when the custody battle over Hashida becomes an actual battle. This includes drinking together, tying the baby to his back while fighting his way to Hashida’s mom, and Hashida crying when Gintoki leaves, after promising they’ll share a drink when Hashida is older. In a similar vein is Seita, a street kid who tries to pickpocket Gintoki but gets robbed in return and ends up working for Gintoki’s landlady (Gintoki’s own adoptive mother) and being taken care of by her and the odd jobs family as a whole, before Gintoki discovers Seita’s mother is Hinowa, the Sun of Yoshiwara and its highest ranking courtesan, and fights Housen, a crime lord who fought Kagura’s father for three days and nights until they considered it a draw, and kills him, just so Seita and Hinowa can reunite. During the timeskip late in the series, we discover after seemingly defeating the Big Bad Utsuro (an immortal who formerly was Gintoki’s adoptive father and teacher Shouyou) Gintoki spent two years raising the reincarnated Shouyou as a baby, before being given his heart to prevent Utsuro’s followers from taking it. These are just the most notable examples, pretty much any character younger than Gintoki gets taken care of or helped by him in a way, including Kagura’s older brother, temporary member of Odd Jobs Pirako, and even to an extent youngest Shinsengumi member Okita Sougo. Gintoki is positioned as acting as the same adoptive parent role as his own adopters (Shouyou and his landlady Otose) are, taking on similar burdens and making, or trying to make) similar sacrifices as well. He can be really soft with kids at times, and has at least once carried Kagura and Shinpachi away from a fight on his back.”
Eithan Arelius:
"An immortal who is so lonely because he's the only one who can do his job and that job is killing entire worlds. So he hides his identity and goes back to his home, intending to raise up apprentices to join him. And so he runs into weak teen boy (Lindon) who also happens to carry a token from one of his immortal coworkers, travelling with angry girl with a sword (Yerin). After an insane training session that involved locking Lindon in a room full of monsters, dueling Yerin's sword with a pair of scissors and in his narration saying that if Lindon died he wouldn't really care, he decides to adopt them. Less a you're my kids way (for now) and more a you're part of my house and all the shit that entails.
At first he's closed off emotionally (though it's easy to think otherwise with the his level of confidence and the sheer amount of jokes) but as time passes he grows to trust them and really see them as a family. Near the end of the last book this guy was being aggressive towards Yerin and Eithan, full Reaper mode puts a hand on the guy's shoulder and is like ""Are you bothering my adoptive daughter??""
Also note other characters part of this little family but I kinda hesitate to say have a parent-child relationship going on: Akura Mercy, daughter of one of the most powerful women on Cradle who has horrible mommy issues and loves her friends. Ziel, who Eithan dragged into the gang by offering to help cure Ziel's condition (it's a long treatment process so you're going to have to join our adventures in the meantime!). Little Blue, literally a small blue spirit. Orthos, a dragon turtle. Dross, London's spirit AI thing who was one of the few things that has ever surprised Eithan because he should not be able to exist at this level what the fuck."
