Whatever you do, dont think about Tiergan noticing as Wylie slowly pulls away from him when Prentice comes back. Dont think about Wylie spending less and less time with him, confiding in him less and less. And yeah Wylie still sometimes refers to him as his father, but somewhere along the line he's stopped being "dad" and started being "Tiergan".

Dont think about Tiergan noticing that his bond with Prentice has suffered, and part of it might be the 13 years of separation and a broken mind, but part of it is Tiergan's own stubbornness and refusal to be honest with Prentice and himself about the truth. They were supposed to be Cognates, for gods sake, and now hes almost forgotten what Prentice's thoughts feel like.

Dont think about Tiergan realising that the two people he loved more than anything, the two people he would take a bullet for again and again, if it meant keeping them safe, just dont... love him the same way. Its his own fault really, its not like he could ever replace Cyrah anyways.

Dont think about Tiergan slowly pulling away from both of them. He knows this will only make it worse, will only widen the chasm between them, but its too late to fix things and for once hes going to put his own happiness and peace of mind first. Or at least, thats the excuse he uses. What he wont admit to himself is that hes so scared. Scared that one day hell push too far and lose them completely. Scared that one day Prentice will realise that if Tiergan hadnt been so stubborn, they couldve been cognates, and maybe, just maybe, Prentice would have suffered less in exile. Scared that one day Wylie would realise that, in his own selfish grief, Tiergan had abandoned him and his mother completely, had failed to realise the dark path she was heading down. That, in a way, her death was on him.

Dont think about Tiergan isolating himself because, no matter how many times he puts everyone ahead of himself, no matter how much he sacrifices, he has no one to call his own, and no one that calls him theirs.
