Heroman: Final Thoughts
Studio Bones and Stan Lee seems like an unlikely alliance, but there’s no arguing with that kind of pedigree. It’s kind of hard to tell just how much of the resulting All-American story of boy-meets-superpowered-robot is Stan Lee’s input (aside from frequent cameo appearances,) but it’s not hard to recognise this as a Bones mecha anime, who I think are an underrated studio when it comes to mecha series. Obviously the names Sunrise and Gainax come to mind when you think of studios famous for their work in the genre, but I think Bones match them for quality if nothing else with entries like Rahxephon and the superb Eureka 7 amongst others. Heroman is definitely a more modest entry in their catalogue of shows compared to those two, with it being shorter and handicapped by a pedestrian middle portion, but its exciting beginning and ending make it worth a shot if nothing else.
The plot as a whole is fairly average and probably the weakest aspect of the whole package. The series opens with bullied orphan Joey Jones acquiring a broken toy robot, which becomes an invincible ally of justice that Joey dubs Heroman when it’s struck by a bolt of lightning. Shortly after, a race of insectoid alien invaders called the Skrugg arrive and it’s up to Joey, Heroman, and a handful of his friends to stop them. The story setup is pretty basic and never really evolves very far past that even as the series finale approaches, but it serves its purpose just fine, ie, it allows for fights to happen.
When Heroman’s action is on point, the show is at its best, and the opening act is probably the point where that’s most evident is in that opening act. Heroman himself is like a force of nature, and the Skrugg, by and large, make for hapless victims who gets tossed around and smashed up in a variety of ways that are fun and satisfying to watch. However, what follows that definitely isn’t as exciting Heroman doesn’t really have as many adversaries to smash up, and the focus is more on Joey’s backstory and the relationships he has with his friends and family. This isn’t outright bad, because Joey’s a pleasant enough character and the supporting cast is fairly fun to watch, but they’re just not interesting enough to make up for the lull in the action. This middle segment is punctuated by an exciting fight against a renegade mad scientist and his powerful robot, but that’s probably the only real high point in a low stretch of episodes. That said, it does pick up again right at the end, and the final three episodes or so definitely make up for lost time, as they feature a thrilling high-stakes battle with just the right amount of high-octane fights, spectacle and emotional moments.
As is pretty much always the case in Bones series, the presentation is on point, which serves the action well. The animation is quality, and the character and mechanical designs are easily recognisable as Bones’ typical style, which is to say that they’re solid with a lot of flair and personality. As preiously mentioned, the animation work is really satisfying, especially in action scenes, with Heroman smashing up his adversaries in dynamic and satisfying fashion I did notice something of a temporary dip in quality towards the back end of the series, perhaps coinciding with the budget running out somewhat but it picks up again just in time for the ending.
Overall, this series didn’t blow me out of the park or anything, and perhaps that was reflected in its reception overall, as a sting after the credits in the final episode teasing a potential season 2 seems to have been for nothing in the end. That said, besides its very uneven pacing I’d still say its worth at least a cursory check out. The last series I watched was Orguss, which was an uneven series itself in a similar sort of way, but unlike Orguss, when Heroman’s at a low ebb it really only descends to the level of being average rather than being outright bad, and the package as a whole is definitely solid enough even if it doesn’t hit the same heights as the best entries in Bones’ portfolio.

You guys,
the main character of Heroman’s name is Joey Jones
Joker’s name is Jack Jones
They are both orphans
Now I know this is just a coincidence but please
give me a crossover where they are cousins
I really want this for the following reasons:
- “Hello I’m Kaitou Joker and I’m here to steal my cousin’s kickass robot.”
- Akai sees the Skrugg (the alien invaders) and is just like “Dammit not these guys again”
- Also Akai is extra wary of Professor Denton because a scientist obsessed with aliens is very familiar and he doesn’t want to go through an Dr. Neo scenario again
- Joey is so confused like “Who are you and why is there a ninja cleaning my room”
- Honestly Joker trying to steal Heroman would just result in shenanigans and I really want to see that

@wattstheproblem GOD I’M MAD ABOUT THAT TOO the asgardians got done so dirty? Like, Heimdall was a WONDERFUL delightful surprise storyline (since I managed to go into this movie only like 5% spoiled).
But it really should have been a wholeass teamup bc omg Valkyrie and Sif SLAYING that final battle would have ended me (along with the rest of the Warriors Three minus Skrugg-until-the-end doing the damn thing and helping Heimdall...) and it makes no damn sense Sif wasn’t ready to die to protect Asgard lmfao.
