The results are what you have with you now: the sound of a long-broken machine deciding, on its own and without the interference of repairmen or excessive prayer vigils, to function again.
Lo-fi desert desolation catharsis.
When I'm not dooming and glooming to my beloved darkwave/postpunk, I'm probably listening to The Mountain Goats, which is much more sad than any of that goth stuff.
All Hail West Texas (2002...my copy is the 2013 remaster) is my favorite album of theirs (I think this is a popular opinion in 2023), so I pulled it out for a listen today. The liner notes (pictured) also go SO HARD for this one.
Going to link two songs from this one. Riches and Wonders and The Mess Inside - these are back to back on the album, and I think together they are so brutally sad - and sometimes you just need to cry to listen to that kind of thing. Riches and Wonders is a gut punch, The Mess Inside kicks you when you're down.

The latest addition to my record collection - Nyx Division's Dark Star (2022)! The song I've linked (Orchid Rain) is so special to me - it put some cracks in the ol' egg. The entire EP is amazing (I love a solid EP of all bangers) and the purple vinyl is super cool.
I’m the skin you crave Reclined in velvet shade Dripping wet in the orchid rain Don't you want a taste? Bet you've never had a man like me

I was listening to this on my *streaming service of choice* this evening and realized - wait, I should break out the record instead!
I remember getting Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (in cd form) on my 16th birthday (yes, in 2005, shortly after it was released) and it was everything to me.
I grew up in...let's say...a very large metropolitan area in the US. Where do you go from there when you feel like you don't fit a big city? A bigger city! I was one of those kids who wanted to move to New York so badly. And this album was about that experience - I ate it up. I wanted it. (And I never got it, but I learned to find my own place. I suppose it's never too late.)
Now when I listen to it, it still holds up, and I still feel those twin themes of ~not fitting in the big city~ and ~there's a fucking bullshit war in the background of everything we do~ just shine through so well with the sweet acousticness of the whole thing. And I think the latter is so important - I know a lot of people were young, and are nostalgic for the 2000s, but to me it's the beginning of the downward spiral we're on.
It's difficult to pick one song off this album, but let's go with Poison Oak because it makes me a soft squishy mess. It did in 2005, and it still does...eighteen years later.
Poison oak, some boyhood bravery When our telephone was a tin can on a string And I fell asleep with you still talking to me You said you weren't afraid to die
In Polaroids, you were dressed in woman's clothes Were you made ashamed? Why'd you lock them in the drawer? Well, I don't think that I ever loved you more

Super psyched to get this one in the mail - Nuovo Testamento's New Earth (2021)! That pink vinyl is super sweet.
As a...dark alternative...type, I am totally normal about this ~dark italo disco~ album. I listen to it when I need that sugar rush dopamine hit dance party in my brain. That is to say, I listen to it a lot. It's so sweet and any of these songs would get me out on the floor.
Good luck getting this one out of your head. It's definitely in mine! 🪩

Got my copy of Soft Kill's "Canary Yellow" today. This album is awesome, and the picture doesn't do the grey marble vinyl justice imo.
