What are your dreams? Tower of Dreams was meant to capture a sense of wistfulness and wonder: a tower across the ocean, suspended amidst the clouds, leading up treacherous peaks and into the cosmos. That sense of unattainable beauty, the desire to discover what lies beyond the horizon, is central to my work, and is inspired by countless different sources. What's your favorite season? An Offering of Light was conceived of during the Fall, when the changing leaves were at their zenith and the Appalachian Mountains a dusky purple at twilight. Though the foreground trees didn't make it into the final piece, warm, autumnal colors defined it through to the end. What gives you a sense of wonder? What takes you beyond the mundane and everyday? A part of the human experience extending back to the earliest parts of our history is the sense of reverential wonder we feel when confronted with something beautiful and mysterious. The range of things that elicits this reaction is varied and undoubtedly differs across individuals, but it seems to be a constant feature. I think part of the appeal of fantastical art in our time is that it speaks to this aspect of ourselves, a part left undernourished by our modern way of life. The idea for An Offering of Light confronted me with such a mystery, placing me on the cusp of some sort of revelation. As the sun comes to rest upon the central monolith and begins to pour out its light, what mysteries will be revealed? Are there things in our world that seem to beckon you toward another world altogether? Perhaps one hiding just around the next bend or over the next hill? For me, nature has always gestured toward a world beyond the mundane, especially the gnarled roots of trees and twisting branches. What do you do when confronted with multiple life paths between which you must choose? How do you make a decision? My interpretation of my own work sometimes changes with time. When I made this piece, I was thinking about the prospect of inviting doorways to exciting new worlds. Now, it calls to mind the anxiety of having to make difficult choices in life from which there may not be any returning, and the fear that you may not be making the right ones. What do you do to experience tranquility? I painted this piece near the end of my tenure in graduate school, when my stress level had reached a fever-pitch and I was looking for a reprieve. What plans do you have for the new year? What are you most proud of from 2019? I always seem to be late to the party on these things, but here are my personal top nine of 2019. Despite numerous obstacles, upheavals, and life-changing milestones, 2019 was the year when I feel I found my voice as an artist. While graduate school and I may not have always been friends, it did a lot to help me shed the baggage of false expectations and inauthenticity regarding my work. Finishing grad school, however, was dwarfed by the cataclysmic changes wrought by becoming a father. Becoming a daddy has opened up depths of love I didn't know I possessed and engendered a maturity and strength of will that can only be gained when confronted with a tremendous occasion to which one must rise. Have you set any goals for yourself this year? This year I've set a goal of producing a piece a month. Having that deadline has really helped me drill down and identify the stages of a painting and the pitfalls that can keep me from moving forward. It's also helped me develop strategies for extricating myself from them more quickly when I do succumb to them. This piece is in the "almost-kinda-sorta-working" phase. In the past, this is the point where I would panic and make drastic revisions that would result in either an entirely different piece (for worse as often as for better) or my circling back to where I was and thinking "huh, I guess it's okay." Experience has told me to stay the course. There's a vast array of subtleties and minor additions and changes to make before a piece at this stage is finished, and it is these that, at least in my experience, ultimately bring the whole thing together. It's tempting to want the painting to feel "finished" before it is.
