Running through Dimension of the Machine again and noticing not for the first time that one of the runes has already been gotten for you, and that there’s a dead Operation Counterstrike marine by the deactivated slipgate. Were they the one who brought the rune back? Who were they, who was almost as determined as Ranger? How long ago was it that they conquered one of the six dimensions, and how long have they laid there, dead, before Ranger arrived in the Machine? Is it only coincidence that they were there first, or was it that Ranger was only intentionally drawn into the Machine once its first choice of champion had failed?
What’s their story? Did Ranger know them? Were they one of the Conterstrike operatives first deployed in the initial Quake incident? Were they fighting just as long as Ranger, only to die in the Machine just before he got there? Or were they sent out later, when Ranger never made it back home?
I doubt we’ll ever get that story, but I am still going nuts thinking about it.

I love it when RPGs get hyperspecific. This is Slipgate Chokepoint (2020), a supplement for the Stay Frosty RPG, by Andrew Walter (who also does the gnarly art, along with Ambika Kirkland) and Paul Cronin. Stay Frosty is based on the Black Hack and is clearly in love with sci-fi military action movies like Aliens, Predator, that sort of thing. Slipgate Chokepoint takes that framework and applies its own love interest: DOOM (and, to a lesser extent, Quake and other FPS videogames, but mostly DOOM).
Stay Frosty is pretty fast and furious, and Slipgate not only follows suit, but ups the ante. There’s just one type of character (the Ranger, which is basically a generic space marine). Weapons are ridiculous. Armor is color coded. There are rules for tension and special stunts and, hilariously, gibbing (Like in DOOM, when you hit something so hard it just flies apart into bloody pieces? That can happen here, to monsters and also to you). Basically, if you can think of a way to tweak 1e D&D rules in order to reflex the action and aesthetics of 90s FPS videogames, its probably already in here.
Is this a little one note? Maybe? But so is DOOM and that didn’t stop a generation of kids from playing it practically non-stop for a couple years. And if you use the (hilarious) random tables and the adventure materials in the back of this book to fuel a campaign, you’re probably creating something that is inherently more dynamic than DOOM. So, an accurate reflection and elevation of the source material. If you wanna RPG DOOM, this is for you (who’d a thunk: you CAN run DOOM on papers and pencils). It is WAY better than the D&D Diablo crap from the late 90s, for sure.

Tempest Rising Captures Classic C&c Vibes in Full Multiplayer Match
Tumblr media
Tempest Rising should be a top priority if you're in the market for a new Command and Conquer or are just a fan of RTS games in general. Many developers with extensive experience in C&C and the genre in general came up with the idea, which is being developed by Slipgate Ironworks. A stunning 1-on-1 showdown video from the team's latest update showcases what a Tempest Rising multiplayer encounter currently looks like. 3D Realms CEO Frederik Schreiber takes on lead designer Brandon Casteel in a show match aimed at giving a better look at how a multiplayer game of Tempest Rising plays out. Schreiber takes charge of the Global Defence Force, while Casteel helms the Tempest Dynasty. Schreiber is quick to note that Casteel is the much more competent player, but that he’s going easy on him to help show how things work. From the very start, the influences are clear, but the polish is modern – I could imagine a parallel world where this is the years-absent next game in the long-standing C&C series. But, while the Slipgate Ironworks team doesn’t shy away from such comparisons and there are glimpses of Warcraft 3 and StarCraft 2 in here as well, Tempest Rising is definitely aiming to bring its own distinct style and ideas to the table. Out the gate, Casteel notes that there’s currently an option to start with a small force that can be used for early scouting while you begin building your base, although he says the team is wary of potential rush strategies and open to changing the way this works if needed. Also under consideration are resource crates, which can currently be found tucked away in various nooks and crannies around the map for an early boost if grabbed by your units. Most of your resource gathering is going to be done by classic-style harvester vehicles, though. Gathering the Tempest resource leaves vines on the ground, which (like C&C’s Tiberium Blossom before it) can potentially regrow Tempest over time if they are near enough to a living pod. Leaving Tempest to grow for longer will cause it to mature, making it more valuable when harvested – an interesting twist on how you approach resource economy. Tempest Rising multiplayer - two harvester vehicles gather up the glowing red 'Tempest' resource from vines sprawling across the ground near a baseCasteel lets the gameplay – which you can watch below – speak for itself, but steps in on occasion to point out the occasional moment, such as when Schreiber’s initial scouting infantry force is comfortably held back by his early Pillager Flame Tank. In response, the GDF builds a fleet of Hunter Tanks, a high-tech, long-range unit. They’re backed up by a Drone Mauler, a heavy infantry unit with two drones that can go into stealth while immobile. Unfortunately for Schreiber, he accidentally overdraws on power right as the Tempest Dynasty forces roll up to his base, leaving his defences open to attack while he scrambles to build more power plants. Nevertheless, he holds the attack off and responds in kind, but has to face off against the Dynasty’s Sensor Array – a tall, potent defensive structure that detects stealth and builds up Tempest charge on nearby vehicles as it attacks. Throughout the match I’m impressed by the style. The art design is gorgeous, the soundtrack gleefully pumping and pounding, and the sound effects on the various unit attacks have a real punch while managing to stay pretty distinctive – which should help you differentiate quickly between units to recognise what you’re hearing. Perhaps my favourite part of all, though, is the unit barks. They’ve always been a highlight of the best strategy games, and Tempest Rising’s brash, confident marines absolutely deliver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa6SeTcmzd4 It’s all looking very promising so far, and there’s plenty more to come. Schreiber says more such videos are planned to be released in the future, with the likes of intel and doctrines among the features the team wants to dig more deeply into in upcoming coverage. He also emphasises that this is still a beta build, meaning anything and everything is open to change before Tempest Rising arrives on Steam. Until then, take a look at more of the best multiplayer games on PC if you can’t get enough of some friendly competition. Alternatively, new FPS/RTS hybrid Silica might be right up your street. Elinor's POV this time, next chapter should be a mix/back and forth
I just like writing their interactions :3c
Chapter 4:
Elinor had just finished dinner and had stood to clear the plates from the table, when out of the corner of her eye she saw an inactive slipgate portal begin to light up.  Her eyes widened in absolute shock and she lost grip of the plate in her hand.  In all the long years she had been in exile that gate had never, ever, lit up or worked.  She remembered to breath again and ran to quickly hide as she had no idea what would come through.  It could be the Vaelt Faction come to kill her at long last.  Her breath became shallow and she tasted metallic fear on her tongue as she realized she only had a few seconds to hide.  She saw a golden light illuminate the room just as she dived behind the crates she had been prepping earlier.   She tried to be still as a shadow, but her heart was beating a thousand times per second and she feared she would have a heart attack before she was actually killed by the intruder.  She tried to quietly move out of sight as the intruder walked towards the table where she had just been, but she couldn't get enough air and her hands and legs were shaking so bad she felt like she would collapse and faint.   She felt like the gods were mocking her.  She had asked for someone to talk to and laugh with and they sent someone to kill her.

3D Realms was also in talks with FOX for an Aliens FPS game, called Aliens: Hadleys Hope
Yesterday, we informed you about a cancelled Aliens game that was to be developed by Boss Key Productions. However, it appears that 3D Realms had also pitched an Aliens game. Similarly to Boss Key Productions’ game, though, this game was cancelled when Disney purchased FOX.
As 3D Realms’ VP Frederik Schreiber noted, their Aliens game was called Aliens: Hadleys Hope. Aliens: Hadleys Hope was a first-person story-driven PvE multiplayer adventure shooter. The game would be developed by Slipgate Ironworks and 3D Realms, and there was a long-range plan to add new content for years.
Players would be able to choose between marines and colonists. Thus, players would be working together in order to eliminate all xenomorphs and kill the Queen.
The game would require teamwork and tactics in order to make progress through each level. After completing a number of levels, players would face an Alien queen. However, the game would feature multiple – and not only one – Alien queens.
Levels would have mission-critical goals, as well as side quests. One of them would be, for example, hunting down eggs. These side quests would provide additional loot and story bits. They would also feature various easter eggs from the Alien universe.

Here, notes on the differences between the slipgate marines and the UAC marines from my Doom fancomic 🤠

Note
All right, starting off with one that's sat at the back of my mind for ages: Do you have any thoughts on why the default weapon the Ranger starts with is an axe? I can kind of justify a shotgun, but I haven't found any actual reason to justify it in my work, even if I think it's neat. Specifically, I've always thought it kind of enhances the feeling of being stuck in a place without rules. An axe is a tool, not a weapon, and it's already bloody - always bloody.
I always kinda thought it was supposed to be a battle axe, what with being double sided, so definitely still a weapon, but for battle or not, you wouldn't think an axe would be normal gear for an interdimensional marine, so you're right either way. It is kinda hard to justify. But in all honesty, the shotgun (or rather, the shotgun alone) is actually kinda hard to justify too (we'll get to that in a sec.) Fortunately, the answer to both of these is in the story description in the game's manual:
You get the phone call at 4 a.m. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation.
The commander explains tersely, "It's about the Slipgate device. Once we perfect these, we'll be able to use them to transport people and cargo from one place to another instantly.
"An enemy, codenamed Quake, is using his own slipgates to insert death squads inside our bases to kill, steal and kidnap…
"The hell of it is we have no idea where he's from. Our top scientists think Quake's not from earth, but another dimension. They say Quake's preparing to unleash his real army, whatever that is.
"You're our best man. This is Operation Counterstrike and you're in charge. Find Quake, and stop him…or it… You have full autonomy to requisition anything you need. If the eggheads are right, all our lives are expendable…"
Look at that. The commander says "you're our best man. You're in charge. You have full autonomy to requisition anything you need."
When he hears that, instead of loading up on a full arsenal and ammo, Ranger goes "cool, I'm gonna take a shotgun, 25 shells, and an axe. And I'm going to kick the entire interdimensional nightmare horror army's butts with just that." And I'd say it's because he's an idiot, but the commander acknowledges that Ranger is in charge because he's their best man, so clearly he's not just some schmuck with a gun and an axe, he knew what he was doing.
So your answer is, it's because even before Quake, Ranger was a badass, everyone knew he was a badass, and he does what he wants. Which is, apparently, to only take a shotgun and an axe into the nightmare horror dimension when he could've presumably taken so much more.

CHAMPION PROFILE: Ranger – Slipgate Marine
Starting Statistics:
Starting Health: 100
Starting Armor: 25
Speed: 320

Oh I also had a couple of ideas for Arlene's dad.
Italian-american old guy in his 60's, slipgate marine from the post-WW2 gen with semi-modern implants/augments, Sergeant Major rank, Tesla coil gunner armor with back generators.
Most of his right hand is a mechanical prosthetic, average size for a slipgate marine (so around 7 ft like Ranger), green eyes (maybe missing one of the two?), lots of scars from hellspawn, probably bald (but either way, white hair).
Loves his daughter very much.

Quick angel posting, have a Wraith Guard.
Low ranking Wraith soldiers, they occasionally work with slipgate marines on Earth to destroy demonic portals during the Primeval war. Usually they are also followed by a sigil-breaker hound, a large mammal reptile-fish-like war animal.

Also, I have decided that the motto for the UAMC is "Non draco sit mihi dux".
I'll keep "Semper fidelis" only for the USMC (so slipgate marines).

What are Flynn 's, Stan's, and Arlene 's favorite weapons to kill their favorite demons with?
Flynn's are the dual chainguns and mobile vulcan cannon. Big boy in big armor likes big guns, but he doesn't mind using machetes and knives. Also hovertank and spacecraft cannons. He is a gunner he loves that shit.
Stan's are the plasma rifle and occasionally any shotguns, he also owns a double bladed argent powered drillsaw (mining equipment from the Deimos excavation site).
Arlene's are the SMG and the plasma rifle. She likes the rocket launcher (she knows how to rocketjump because of her slipgate marine friends lol) but the UAC launchers use pretty outdated technology in comparison to everything else the corporation produces, so they do heat up pretty easily and that's risky for everybody around.
Plasma rifles are the signature rifle of the branch, if that wasn't obvious.

It occurs to me that technically by making the slipgate marines the USMC I doomed them with the fact that they ARE the so called "devil dogs".
UAC marines are a secondary (universal and not only US affiliated) branch of the USMC, so they are pretty much another new and smaller "breed" of the so called "devil dogs", therefore I can call them "evil puppies".
