So we finished season 5 episode 7 of Smallville "Splinter" and the whiplash I felt seeing this one come right after the "Dukes of Hazard reunion & Lois goes undercover at a strip club" episode. Just wow.
I had no memory of this one. So much so that I think maybe I missed it when it originally aired.
This is the one where Brainiac exposed Clark to silver kryptonite and Clark becomes paranoid, delusional, and violent. It's shot like a horror film and as a horror episode it is extremely effective. The changes in perspective conveyed by the changes in camera angles so you know what's real and what's Clark's delusions. Clark's progressive deranged sweatiness. His little half smile when Lex pulls a gun on him. Unsettling to the core.
Clark is terrifying in this episode. Truly, honestly terrifying.
He nearly chokes Lana to death because he thinks she "betrayed him" and it's horrifying to watch. And I it baffles me to my core that this was not the immediate end to their relationship. She just forgives him instantly. Girl. Girl he almost killed you ON PURPOSE in a jealous rage.
It could have worked better if she was like "hey I was possessed by a homicidal witch last year I know all about coming out of an altered state disoriented and plagued by guilt and I know how it feels not be be able to trust my own mind", but they didn't bring any of that up they just had her say "Chloe told me the meteor rock made you violent and delusional and gave you temporary powers. I know you'd never hurt me" except he did hurt you Lana. You're in a hospital bed Lana. Had he not be interrupted you would not be alive, Lana!
I like Lana and I want good things for Lana and the men of Smallville are just not it and it's so hard to watch.

Smallville 5
Lionel's blind again and Clark lost his powers again.
I'm mixed on Clark losing his powers again because I think it should probably be done this time and I think the fact that it's happened before gives us enough exploration that we already know what's going on and he can just dive right in.
Lex putting his father in a mental facility is actually quite a good fitter for his fall but I feel like I'm conflicted with the mix of the supernatural "There's a dark side in you that's apart of your fate written in the caves." thing that's been going on. That mixed with him being the one that knows about the alien ship, if he hadn't known about that then I think it'd make his fall more promising because he would truly think his father went mad rather than just wanting to keep him isolated in general. But both Clark and Lionel keep it that way for a few then bridge off which you'd expect anyway but it feels properly explored and integrated now.
Lex is running for office, not for power but to change people's perspective of him since absolutely everyone seems to have it out for him and blame him for everything.
But believe it or not, I can't believe I'm saying this but Chloe and Lex start having relativity. You see, now that Clark's normal, he finally and officially got with Lana but last season Lex started developing a thing for her so it's bitter for him but he keeps it down well. Chloe who knows Clark's secret and has been getting closer and closer to him has just been shut out of his life, so these two are both third and fourth wheels. Chloe *gulp* is the MVP this season, there I said it.
So we're back with the cameos and...oh boy. I won't spoil it but Episode 5 put tears in my eyes, I never would've guessed who'd appear. That episode is so weird because it has...yes, you guessed it. Vampires. Kryptonite ones. With Buffy S....anders. Buffy Sanders, what did you think I'd say Summers? You guys are nuts. But it does so in a creative way where Chloe is writing it like a report and it has a side-plot of a major villain so it's weirdly mandatory.
And the next episode takes place in a cabaret and it acts as a Dukes of Hazzard reunion. So...yeah, this season doesn't slow down, does it? Certain episodes seem to cram some stuff you've been waiting for but I can't exactly say that they were done badly or anything.
Clark sometimes has to be the bad guy and be in the wrong, normally it'll be "because" of something like a kryptonite power but in the end he has to bite the bullet and make people believe it was real because how else could he explain it. And sometimes that's easier than revealing his powers, it's a real tragedy. There's a fine line between hurting and protecting. I don't think I've really seen the comics do that too much, this series and this season alone really sort of asked the question about what if your heroes aren't who you make them out to be, they make mistakes, they can do "wrong" things, sometimes by accident but sometimes on purpose. They too have regrets they have to live with. People have such a fascination with saying how Superman is essentially "perfect" but he's not, they point out his flaws and show you exactly why that is, even if he's not human.

Re-Watching Smallville
Season 1 Episode 5 Cold
“What are you from an ice planet?!”
Well, considering Krypton appeared to be covered in a fair amount of Ice in the 1979 film and Smallville is more based on that iteration of Superman’s mythos, yes, Chloe, Clark IS from an ice planet.
Ah, teenagers and not giving a shit about where someone is.
Sean is what one might call EXTREMELY Endothermic. Meaning he takes in heat.
Fire isn’t a physical thing, so while that is cool, that’s not what would happen.
I will concede smoke particles could have frozen but that neat little ice fire swirl, na.
I know, I’m bringing up actual SCIENCE in a Sci-fi/Superhero show centered around Superman as a teenager.
It’s not a crush on Lana, it’s an unhealthy obsession that is in no way romantic and the biggest flaw of Smallville, in my opinion.
Lex, please, as an adult to another adult, GET FRIENDS YOUR OWN AGE.
It is creepy that you—a twenty-something—are hanging out with a high school freshman.
I get that he sees Clark as a brother figure, but still.
GET SOME GROWN-UP FRIENDS (says the person who really doesn’t have many grown-up friends herself).
Wow, Chloe’s crush on Clark is obvious this episode. Glad they didn’t pair them.
Though, her pairing with Oliver still bugs me to this day.
What is with CW shows and blonde female OCs ending up with Oliver Queen?!
BTW I don’t like the Arrowverse at all, and I reject anything and everything portrayed during any episodes therein.
And, once again a Meteor Freak goes “huh” murder is ok” in like no time flat.
I love that Martha is sassy.
So, when he ices over the matches, that is what should happen with every flame thing he steals the heat from.
“Blue’s a good color on you.”
It sure is!
Lex, uh, that’s not a good thing but then again, Jonathan is stubborn AF.
Defensive Reading is a good term for it.
“There are worse things.” Like stalking Lana with your telescope.
“....Looking at other worlds wondering what my life would be like on them.”
Depends on the star they orbit, Clark.
Wait, his full name’s Sean *Kelvin* UGH. Why did that even make me go Augh.
Oh, Dial-up how I do NOT miss you.
I’d feel bad for Lana but I just can’t really.
Um, why is that unlocked?
“I don’t have a choice” actually you did and still do. You just chose murder.
“I always thought he was a good guy” the serial womanizer? Then again, a guy like that is different to other guys.
Yeah, Lana is a meteor freak and her power is “attract all problems/guys to me.”
“He’s Clark.”
Yeah. That’s fair, Jonathan.
Clark is a giant solar battery, so, yeah he would be a good source of heat.
Season 1 Jonathan, while ultimately right, is still a bit much how hard he goes.
Accept the Friendzone Clark!
“Why do you go out with him?”
Because she chooses to? That’s it? The real question is WHY THE HELL IS A SENIOR DATING A FRESHMAN.
