Smartwool socks: I think I'm doing this wrong
Basically, I've had the worst luck known to man with smartwool socks. Unless its sunny and dry(rare considering where I'm based) my feet alwayssssss end up soaked. So much so that yesterday in between day hikes with my partner, we had to stop at an outfitter for me to buy another pair of socks bc the pair i had on were completely soaked (I know that some people are going to say to suck it up about wet feet, but that is the one thing that drives me crazy on the trail and makes me extremely anxious).
I've tried them:
with water resistant trail runners
with waterproof boots
calf version
crew version
I have a theory that it the versions I'm using rather than the brand as a whole because I've heard tons of people, in person and online, that love the brand for hiking socks.
Tumblr media
I've been using the classic mid-weight styles (see above for the most recent pair I bought, the other one is so old I can't find it online), but when I look at them up close they look a lot more loosely knit than the hiking socks that work the best for me (Darn Tough and Fits).
IF I give them another chance I'm planning to try one of the lighter-weight and tighter-knit styles and using the pairs I already have as camp socks. I do want to try them again, but I'm on a college budget here.
SOOOOOOOOO if anyone is out there and has found success with smartwool socks for hiking please share your secrets/favorite styles:)

y'all will never guess who got a Speedweve.......
okay but seriously I LOVE this thing. I've been using it to repair all sorts of things. Mostly I've been tackling my wife's beloved (but threadbare) silly socks.
Though this is the first instance of my using it. I have a few pairs of Smartwool hiking socks that I've had for a while now. They're quite comfortable but have been wearing out at the heel and ball of the foot. I had heard speedweves were great for fixing socks so I got myself one. I had a lot of fun making this woven patch!
All of the damage on this pair of socks bears the same two colors. (I found a pack of bobbins with darning wool just for this.) But I'm hoping to do a sort of plaid pattern for my other pair I have on standby.
I also got another, longer disk for larger extents of damage. And once I added proper darning needles to the mix my repair speed REALLY took off.
To explain the photos:
The first one is how it looks once a few weft lines have been put in. The end of each row has a stitch to lock it in the place.
The second is the completed sock.
The third is the work inside out. The longer stitches are the loose ends to be threaded.
The fourth is the loose ends all pulled to the back of the work.
And the final photo shows the loose ends all threaded through the stitches on the inside.

Zeal Optics and Haa Aaní Alliance Unveil Collaborative Ski Gear with a Purpose
Haa Aaní Alliance gear sales protect free-flowing rivers and salmon spawning grounds
Tumblr media
Boulder, Colo. – October 10, 2023 – Zeal Optics, in partnership with Weston, Smartwool, Pret, and MountainFLOW Eco-Wax, have joined forces with Tlingit artist Crystal Worl of Trickster Company to form the Haa Aaní Alliance and launch a collection of goggles, skis, snowboards, socks and accessories featuring Worl's artwork, with proceeds benefiting three non-profit organizations: Yukon Salmon, Wild Salmon Center and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund. Zeal will donate $5 from every pair of Haa Aaní goggles sold.
“I’m thrilled to create art on outdoor gear that will bring attention to Indigenous values and knowledge around Xâat Kusteeyí, the Salmon Way of Life,” said Crystal Worl, whose art is featured across the collection. “I grew up fishing and learning how to care for and respect salmon. I also grew up skiing and spending time outdoors in Alaska. It’s been an incredible journey to live and love this land as my ancestors and family have for generations. There is much to learn from the salmon, and time is running short. I have big hopes and dreams for what my art and storytelling can do to make change.”
Tumblr media
The central aim of this project is to protect the uninterrupted flow of rivers and vital salmon spawning grounds that are essential for the preservation of both human communities and the ecosystem, in alignment with the principles of Haa Aani and the Salmon Way of Life, Xáat Kusteeyí. For the Tlingit of Southeast Alaska, culture revolves around the land and its resources. The Tlingit believe that when they take care of the land and its inhabitants, the land, in turn, takes care of them. The Tlingit phrase “Haa Aaní” often summarizes this concept, which means “Our Land.” Animals are viewed as members of the same social universe as those beside them. Art, dance, stories, and crests reflect these relationships with nature. Xáat Kusteeyí, as an extension of Haa Aaní, focuses on utilizing salmon respectfully and sustainably. By protecting the salmon and its habitat, the salmon provide people with sustenance in return. The Haa Aani Collection designs are available now for Zeal’s Cloudfall and Lookout goggles. Visit zealoptics.com/haa-aani for more information.

Linked Universe Ski Patrol AU - Part 2
Only energy for two boys tonight..
Legend:
Ski Patrol Member
Skier - Speciality: Moguls & Backcountry
Former National Team member
He has been frequenting the mountain since he was a little kid. Once he started competing he very quickly dominated the scene.
Currently, he is on a break from competition after feeling quite burnt out at the end of last season.
As much as he loves the thrill and technical aspect of moguls he longs for days spent in the backcountry exploring with no civilization in sight and the calm stillness of the forest.
Hyrule and Legend are backcountry skiing partners.
Whenever there is a need for something, the patrol knows to radio Legend. They have yet to ask for something that Legend isn’t able to produce from his bag: trail mix, extra socks, flashlight, swiss army knife, hot packs, lip chap, tape, tweezers, sunscreen, gel packets, medicine... Man is a walking Pharmasave.
Enjoys teaching pre-teen age groups the most as they tend to pick up new skills quickly and are comedic balls of happy energy. (They are also past the age of having to be carried off to the bathroom every 15 minutes).
Rents a townhouse with Hyrule and Wild. Their house is a constant disaster and Legend is 95% sure Wild has been stealing his favourite smartwool socks.
Wind:
Junior National Team Member (& VERY jealous he is not old enough to join Ski Patrol)
Skier — Seriously thinking about transitioning to snowboarding as a primary.
Billets with Time and Malon.
Got stuck headfirst in a tree well last season while skiing off piste and sent the entire patrol into a frantic frenzy trying to find him. Wars and Time simultaneously received their first grey hairs that day. Wind maintains he was cool as a cucumber, but boy was stressing.
He was introduced to skiing by his older cousin (Wars) on a family trip. Aryll didn’t take to it as much as Wind did. Eventually Wind stumbled upon old racing clips of Time and was completely enamoured. After that he threw himself into the sport and landed himself a spot on the Junior National Team.
Time is Wind’s primary coach.
Wars use to help out more with coaching Wind however, Wind has hit that prickly age which means he is less likely to be receptive of advice given by family. Lately, their interactions during practice tend to devolve into eye rolls and arguing when Wind gets frustrated.
Has pilfered a spare key to the patrol office and raids the fridge on a daily basis (“Someone ate part of your sandwich Wars? Oh, what a shame...”)

Some Small Dumb Projects Wot Yrs Truly Has Tackled Lately, all of which (it should be emphasized) involved some degree of experimentation that would probably scandalize actual experts:
experimentally felting a bit of roving onto the threadbare heel of an old smartwool sock as a patch. we will see how this goes! an obvious problem with this approach is that if yr sock becomes too much felt and too little knit you will no longer be able to get it onto yr foot. also frankly highly probable that i haven't felted the patch on *enough* and it will pull away either in the wash or in the wearing. but worth a try, i thought! shd note that bc the roving i have is vaguely cream-colored, while the sock in question is dark brown, the fibers of the patch are absolutely visible on the outside and it looks very stupid. fortunately i find that charming!
rebuilding the heels of my birks, which, yes, i DO wear with increasingly-thick socks as long into the fall as i can get away with it. glad the fashion world is coming around on this deeply gorpcore move. but anyway: i have been a heel dragger since my stroller days and continue to be, so that portion of my soles reliably wears away disproportionately quickly. Real Birkenstock Repair Places, understandably, want more money than i want to pay them to fix this, so instead i bought a bit of foam sheeting for a dollar at michaels a while back, along with some contact cement, and have been cutting out little heel pads, cementing them on, and then cutting/sanding to size. it honestly works pretty well! really the only downside is that because the foam i bought is softer than the original soling, it needs redoing more often; someone on etsy sells half-sheets of actual birk soling foam for less than ten bucks last i checked, so at some point i might try getting some and seeing how that goes. (it would alter the process slightly because in order to preserve the treading pattern, which my current foam doesn't have, i'd need to cut away the relevant portion of the preexisting sole, rather than just sanding down the patch. seems doable though! i might try it once i run out of this foam but like. even this method honestly lasts a while so. we'll see.)
changing the fucking flat i mysteriously gave myself (more on this in a bit) maybe last week sometime?? this would not be a big deal at all except that i have gatorskin tires which, while *great* for avoiding punctures, are unbelievably terrible to get on and off the wheel, because they're SO tight. i have googled about this in the past and wound up on bike forums that led me to the depressing albeit validating conclusion that no, there was nothing i was doing wrong, these tires just suck to change. in theory the upside is that you don't have to DO it that often because they prevent punctures! but if you wind up with a flat for a different reason... sadface. now the reason *i* had a flat was that the last time i went to stick a little extra air in my tires, i somehow managed to (as i thought at the time) totally fuck up the valve with my bike pump. this was extremely irritating and also extremely confusing, because i've used this bike pump many times without issue! fine, i said, i'll swap out the fucking inner tube. once i calm down. then i fucked up another inner tube pumping it up. what the fuck, i said, very furious at this point and also very mystified. fine. guess i'll go to the LBS and get ANOTHER fucking inner tube. (some people, at this point, would have explained their difficulties to the LBS employee who assisted them and asked for advice. i did not. this was partially for soc anx reasons, partially because i'm always braced for condescension from the cis men who staff every LBS i've ever been to [this is probably unfair because ALMOST every time they've actually been really lovely to me! but alas, i have a big gendery chip on my shoulder. stuff 2 work on.], and partially because i do just get more gratification out of figuring a problem out for myself! toxic masculinity, etc.) at this point (armed with, may i remind you, my *third* inner tube) i was like, okay, what the fuck. time to do a google. so i said to google, bike pump unscrews valve. talk to me. and discovered: some presta valves have removable cores! which i guess has some utility, although not for any use case i personally have, but when you've got a pump that screws on... shocker, unscrewing it can also unscrew the valve core, if it isn't absolutely thoroughly tightened. so! massively irritating but also educational. i bought a little valve core tool, which is tiny and adorable, and tightened down the valve core of, again, my third inner tube before trying to inflate it: hey presto, success. so, you know, now i have two extra inner tubes hanging around unspooled and flaccid, that there's actually nothing wrong with! which i guess is cool, because it means i still have them to use at a later date, but, you know. good luck 2 me with folding them back up into a configuration it's at all possible to carry... we'll see how that goes. but on the whole i feel like: i learned a thing and also seem to have a rideable bike again! so. choosing not to be TOO bitter. :)
and this has been today's installment of Extremely Long-Winded Anecdotes Abt Very Mundane Problem-Solving with yr friendly-if-incompetent host K! thx for spending this time with me. :)
