“Oh my god, Robs,” Steve hisses, leaning into her. 

She perks up, head tilting toward him as she blinks the sleep out of her eyes. “What is it?” 

“There’s a mom and daughter coming out of Barnes & Noble,” he says, probably louder than he intended but his hearing aids don’t work the best in crowded areas. “The mom has on this dress – think Madonna back in the Like a Virgin days – and they’re tucked into her spanx.” 

“Stop,” Robin gasps, covering her mouth with one hand and grabbing Steve’s arm with another.

“Daughter’s been trying to get her attention, it looks like,” Steve says. “I’d put her at twelve maybe.” 

“So embarrassed by her mom even breathing at her, let alone that?” 

“Bingo.” Steve narrows his eyes at the two as the daughter desperately tries to get her mom to stop walking and to shut up long enough for her to tell her. “Poor kid is trying so hard to save her mom.” 

“We should do something.” 

“Meh,” Steve says with a shrug.

Robin shrugs too and leans into Steve more. “What are they doing now?” 

“They’re walking into Hallmark.” He lifts his head a little, but his hip hurts from walking around the mall so he doesn’t try to do more than that. “Can’t see them anymore.” 

“That makes two of us.” 

Steve rolls his eyes. If you had asked him back in ‘85 which of them would be blind first, Steve would have said himself easily. And he’s well on his way, sure. His glasses couldn’t get any thicker than they are now and even then, he’s been banned from driving. He never would have guessed that Robin would lose most of her sight first. 

She can see a little still, mostly close up and enough to keep her from running into things in new places. It doesn’t stop her from falling, but they’re old enough where that’s a problem anyone would be having at her age so he doesn’t blame that on her eyes. But just because she can’t see from a distance or other people, doesn’t mean she should miss out on their favorite pastime: people watching. 

“Gross,” Steve huffs as he settles back in with Robin, “this guy just stuck his hand down his pants and sniffed his hand.”

“Ew,” Robin swats at him. “I don’t want to know that.”

“You need the full picture.” 

“I promise you, I don’t.”

Steve chuckles as he surveys the area of the mall they’re in. It’s not as busy as it should be, but it’s still early and there’s enough people that he’s found some good stories. And they still have ten minutes before his daughter picks them up once Eddie’s physical therapy is over, so he’s bound to find another weird scenario to tell Robin. 

If he doesn’t, there’s always tomorrow.

I do :D

So, without knowing your gender expression I'm not sure what to specifically advise, so I'll give you some general suggestions.

First, especially as a new person in the school, make sure to check to see if there is a dress code. Most schools have an employee dress code. (Mine doesn't, I'm lucky!).

As far as WHAT to wear, here's some things I've learned:

If you're wearing a dress or skirt, nothing too tight or short. Go for long and flowy, or you could have an unfortunate accident. Also, you could wear spanx/biker shorts under them for added safety.

For a more feminine look that's still professional, I like wearing a top tucked into wide-legged flowy pants. It's very comfortable and interchangeable.

For more masculine days, I usually do button downs, either over a tighter shirt or buttoned up. I'll pair that with jeans because I'm allowed, but if you're not, you could find some slacks with some stretch to them.

In general, buy things with stretch to them, especially if you're not stick thin. Most jobs working with kids involve a lot of movement and you want to be comfortable.

If you want to get away with dressing a bit more casual, the best way to do it is by wearing school clothing. I.e. if the school has clothing with their logo on it, try to grab something if you have the cash. I can get away with walking around in a sweatshirt because it has my school's logo on it.

Adults will judge you on if you're appropriate. Kids will judge you on if you're in style. But honestly, as long as you're not outrageously dressed, kids don't care too much.

Tiktok has a lot of ideas. Teachers love to post their 'fits' and I've gotten ideas from them. You could search 'masc teacher outfits' or 'femme teacher outfits' or 'gender neutral teacher outfits' and I'm sure a lot will come up.

Stay away from white. Just....stay away. Even working with older kids...if you get something on it, there goes your whole day.

Keep a change of clothes in your car. Trust me.

What started out as pure laziness and a response to an arthritis flareup turned into a thought experiment:

One of the biggest bullshit programming in American soeicty from the literal time we are "born" is you cant be naked outside.

Why cant I go outside naked?

•"Public decency".

Thinkin about cosplay tonight

Just thinking about how I’m constantly frustrated about how my cosplays come out and it’s not (necessarily) because I can’t sew. It’s because I constantly size up because I’m worried about making my cosplay too small and then I can’t fit in it

Like an example:

Here’s my princess peach jumpsuit from two years ago. For my first time making pants, I think I did a pretty good job. But even with the belt pulled super tight (which it is) you can tell it’s immensely baggy.

(Ignore that I had the sleeve pointed in the wrong direction WHOOPS) but like. This is absolutely not flattering. And it’s not the photographer’s fault, it’s because it’s not well fitted to my body.

And this isn’t me being weird because of my body. I’m not small, I’m pretty much the average for an American woman. Because I CAN look flattering in my own cosplay (in my own opinion):

Yes she’s a lil lumpy and bumpy even with the spanx but it’s a LOT more flattering. Because it actually fits my body????

I think for a lot of my life I’ve been so used to getting clothes that are big for me I’m always nervous to fit to my actual body because what if I get bigger??? And then I can’t wear it??? Which technically has happened for cosplays of mine. But like… a cosplay that doesn’t fit right isn’t going to make me feel good.

So I guess what I’m saying is next big cosplay I’m going to not worry as much about it being too tight???? I dunno. Cosplay is hard, sewing is hard, but I guess I can’t stop so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
