Smaugust day 17 - Volcano

outliers of the natural world, Myngo-Ahzdars are widely thought to be Dragons. their environments of choice are often considered too hostile for the average person to venture to just to see some weird beasts, that and the animal’s general unpalatability leading to a lack of knowledge. it is thought they sift volcanic material from the toxic alkaline lakes they populate, feeding their young and colouring their feathers with magma. it is even believed they can spit molten rock in place of dragonfire. indeed, these are just flightless pterosaurs occupying a flamingo’s niche, filtering tiny prey from the brine. dragonkin are theropod dinosaurs, meaning the Myngo-Ahzdar doesn’t even count as a pseudo or false dragon like a drake, though the popular opinion of lava-eating dragons still prevails in most areas. (these are a fictional design for a fantasy world-building project, not representing any real genera aside from being an Ahzdarchid!)

I finally got around to watching “Prey” and I have to say I enjoyed it thoroughly! The entire creative team, in particular, did such an incredible job.

It got my world building gears turning... what would a "Yautja Drake" look like? Maybe they are used as an aerial steed to hunt down large game?

Sliding in on the last day of Smaugust yet again lol. I actually had an entire line-up of dragon friends for you goblins to meet, but things have been kinda tough on my end. I'll have a life update soonish about that. 🙃

Now, onto SOME LORE!

Meet the Coral-Eater Dragon! These large yellow sea-noodles can be found pootling about the seabed whilst acting as a mobile microhabitat for fish.

As their name implies, these dragons chiefly eat coral. Armed with tails that are encased with hard, stony coral, Coral-Eaters will break down soft corals to feast on by bashing them into smaller pieces to swallow.

Both sexes of these species also boast hard coral antlers which they use for defense and courtship (a male and female will typically engage in locking of antlers to see if they are a match for each other). 💖🐉

Despite being the distinguishing features of the species, Coral-Eater hatchlings are not born with coral-encased antlers or tails. Newborns must be guided by an adult to where mass coral spawning occurs in order to let planulae (free-floating coral larvae) settle and attach onto their bare horns and tails.

Coral-Eater Dragons are a generally docile species, and it is said that wherever one dies, a coral reef will grow in its place. 🐟🐠🪸

Smaugust 2022 - Velvet Worm

This soft bodied wyrm is a surprising predator, useing the nubbins by its face to project a sticky trapping glue to tangle prey and threats.

I designed something for Smaugust. I used the prompt "Sand" and based it on the antlion. The hunting technique of this beast is very similar.

Smaugust day 4 :: Venomous

all dragons ancestrally have the ability to be venomous, with their specialised venom being the source of dragonfire. an angry dragon will drool shortly before discharing dragonfire as their drool acts as a flame retardant, and it's common for dragons to gape their mouth and drool as a last warning. shown is a Yellow-Splotched Lacewing in a defensive posture, salivating and brandishing it's heavily marked wings. most Lacewings have very minor venom and toxin in their spines, however the Yellow-Splotched is one of the few small-bodied dragons known to have medically significant venom in it's jaw and spines. best to leave it alone.
