god don't even get me started. mindlink connecting the teens initially during fights, and then niko is able to connect them even outside of transformation and they can talk during classes. edwin trying to focus in class but having to tune out the background noise of the other three and getting very annoyed and tossing out a i am TRYING to focus very loudly in their minds and it's quiet for the rest of class the same was its quiet in the car when your parent raises their voice with you bc they're annoyed and driving and just want you to be quiet so they can get you home safely. figuring out that they can send each other mind version of Game Pigeon games and doing that during study sessions or late nights where they can't sleep.

learning how to distinguish between thoughts based on their cadence. edwin and niko both having ramble-y thoughts but edwin's stay focused on a line of thought while niko's jump between topics. charles think less in full sentences and more in emotions and individual phrases. crystal's thoughts coming through quick and having an echo-y feel because of the divination aspects of her powers.

connected nightmares :) initially not knowing that they're experiencing each others nightmares, but then they fall into nightmares that there's no way that they would have them (stumbling into a nightmare niko has about losing her dad, crystal falling back into old habits with the team, charles' nightmares about his dad, nightmares about each other getting hurt) and figuring it out and now they're seeing each others fears and worries and not even their dreams and nightmares being private (edwin and charles sharing dreams of domesticity before they get together but they both think it's their own dreams and both being worried about the other stumbling into those dreams).

feeling strong flashes of each other's emotions. one of them being up late and feeling a spike of loneliness or fear from one of the others and having to piece through who sent it and going to their room to check in. charles not wanting to burden the others with his negative emotions, learning to lock down his mind from the link but the absence of his thoughts feels bad in a different way.

just, thinks about being so connected to people they literally know you inside and out, they're actually able to look inside your head, but also the absolute lack of privacy they have initially.

the team dynamics are very fun bc it does reflect the show. the team is made up of charles, edwin, crystal, and niko, with their magical companion being the cat king. the kids are all at a co-ed boarding school. they live on the same floor, which is split down the middle with the boys on one side and the girls on the other, with dorm mom jenny living in a room between the halves of the floor. the kids all live in the two rooms neighboring jenny's room on either side, with edwin and charles as roommates and niko and crystal rooming together. edwin and charles have been roommates for several years now, and are super close, while crystal is a new transfer student who got kicked out of her last school. charles and edwin are super close, they requested to be roomed together after their first year at the school and have been since then. they both spend as many breaks at the school as they can instead of going home, bc charles home life isn't safe and edwin's parents are absent most of the time for social events. crystal is the new transfer student, who got transferred in shortly after the year started, and she got moved into niko's room since it had an open bed and was next to jenny's room. crystal got kicked out of her last school for bullying and is taking this as a chance to restart and reinvent herself. her moving in has tension as she and niko are having to figure out how to live together, while niko is trying to get used to a person in the space she had to retreat from others. niko initially refuses the call of magical girl-ing, so the first couple fights are just the other three. charles was already a bit enamored by crystal after spotting her on her tour, which edwin wasn't thrilled with, and now that they're working together for hero-ing he's even more unhappy. this leads to a lot of him and crystal snipping at each other while charles tries to keep the peace. niko and edwin spend a lot of time together after she joins the team bc edwin is cross with charles about crystal. the cat king, who mostly hangs around edwin, joins them bc he and charles Do Not Get Along.

as for costuming, niko has a very classic anime magical girl outfit, with the bit poofs and frills, but whenever she gets a new ability, her outfit upgrades in a way to reflect that. crystal's costume is definitely more day-to-day wear and shifts frequently to reflect the struggle she has with figuring out who she's becoming. she also is the newest in a long list of women in her family that were magical girls, and after she finds that out, she tries to find out what she can about them and pulls in elements of their costuming to honor them. edwin has a very buttoned up costume, tailcoat and gloves and everything. it's a bit impractical for fighting, but the coverage makes him feel better while fighting and when he has to interact with non-heroes. charles' initial transformation is a very frilly, short skirt super impractical costume that the cat king gives him bc they don't get off on the right foot. his actual costume has a very brawler feel. his hands are taped up and he has steel-toed boots. he also is fairly covered up, but it's more practical to move around in.

then there's the actual build of them mechanically within the system. ok so big context for this au, it was based on the ttrpg we played in, sore must be the storm. smbts is run the glitterhearts system (a powered by the apocalypse die set), which has three categories of abilities to pick one to start with: the everyday identity, the magical archetype, and the magical connection.

the everyday identity is what it sounds like, its who they are in their day to day. there are five types of identities: the physical, mental, emotional, persona, and mystical. charles is the boxer (physical) identity with the 'float like a butterfly' ability that gives him a bonus to thwart peril checks and also gives him a minus one to emotional checks bc he's Like That about himself. charles also picks up the team player (emotional) with 'take one for the team' which lets him redirect attacks on his teammates to himself :D edwin is the unrivaled (mental) with the 'analytical' ability lets him pick apart the flaws in their plans. which. is just so edwin. it also gives a minus one to emotional checks (there is a running theme if you can't tell). crystal is the dreamer (mystical) with 'dreams of prophecy' that lets her have, you guessed it, prophetic dreams that are good or bad based on her roll. niko is the counselor (emotional) with 'a peaceful soul' which gives her a plus two to touch their hearts checks but a minus one to clash checks (thinks about devlin house and how she initially refuses the call in this au but eventually works up the courage to fight.) also the description of the ability says 'you see the good in yourself and everyone else' and in this au, she gets gunged and the sprites are little gunge constructs that are a result of that that stick around bc niko is convinced she can rehabilitate them.

the magical archetype is like the everyday identity, but for their hero identities instead. there are also five archetypes: the idol, the witch, the warrior, the defender, and the tactician. charles is a split defender/warrior, with 'endure' that lets you add your physical ability to protect someone checks and 'catch your breath' that lets you "gather your energy and ignore your wounds" and if you fail the roll it is Real Bad edwin and crystal are both witch archetypes but edwin has 'hex!' which gives a wider range of results that can backfire on the caster and crystal has 'divination' which is what it sounds like. crystal also picks up 'personal minion' which gives her access to the ability 'knowledge from beyond' which takes the shape of her ancestors. edwin picks up the tactician move 'one step ahead' that, if he fails on the roll, gives him the isolated and self-doubting conditions. which. just feels right. niko is the idol to start with 'soothing voice' that gives a plus one to convince someone checks. i do think as she grows into her hero-sona, she takes the tactician moves oriented around teamwork and connecting the team.

the magical connection has a lot of options that fall under three categories: mystical, elemental, and emotional. it is far too much to get into all of the specifics in this post. charles has the anger connection, with 'burning spirit' that lets him "activate his anger to push past any pain" which. is. edwin has the fear connection, with 'worst case scenario' that gives him an advantage in planning. crystal has the death connection with the 'life lines' ability that lets her see into the past of people she's touching. and niko starts with the sadness connection but picks up the hope connection the more hero-ing she does.
