A Household Name...Jesus?

“Everybody knows or at least has heard of Jesus”, said Domiguez as I asked him and his wife Aida a couple of questions about God, religion, love and fears. If we ask homeless men, Muslims, Mexicans, children, men, and women-- it seems that almost everyone has heard about Jesus. I heard about Jesus when I was very young. Heard about Him again in middle school and then again in my undergrad career. For Jonathan and Aida a fairly newlywed couple, they had heard about Jesus. Both of their family members had heard about Jesus…Our daily lives are filled with conversations. Rumors, truths, lies, surprises, etc. But how do we know what we know? But do we really know Jesus? Or do we just go along with what we’ve learned or heard? As I kept asking questions, Jonathan was very open and honest about his walk. Aida would gaze over with the softest look in her eyes as her husband spoke. Both Jonathan and Aida are part of a Pentecostal church. Many know Pentecostals as skirt wearing women, “raja tabla” people with their doctrines and as extremists. In most Pentecostal churches, women are to dress differently than men, women are not to cut their hair, women cannot wear make-up, both men and women are not to drink, no clubbing, no dancing, no drugs, many do not even go to the movie theater. However, what stood out to me the most while having this conversation with the couple was the fact that Jonathan said, “Everybody knows or at least has heard of Jesus”. It is true! We have, heard of Him that is. Even if it was that you saw the Mel Gibson’s Passion of Christ! Everything began to change gear as the conversation picked up some speed. It was no longer was about whether we had heard of Jesus or not…the real question had become…Do we really know who Jesus is? We have all heard of Barack Obama. He is our current president, went to Harvard, has two daughters, wife’s name is Michelle Obama, but do we really know our president? Do we know Jesus intimately? Do we know His character? Do we know His voice? Back to the couple. Jonathan and Aida began to talk about their upbringing. Their families, “there were so many no’s and not too many yes’s”. Many would say that these two grew up in a very strict household. Many of us, wake up, eat, pray, work, gym, church, sleep repeat. We beat to the rhythm that has been already composed by our society, our parents and our leaders. How do we break free from the outline that have been implanted in our brains? How do we balance what we already know about Jesus with the new things that He shows us every day? Even the program in our churches have been the same. Have we become so programed, we leave no room for Jesus? How do we give Jesus a chance to show us who He really is if we already have stereotyped Jesus in our minds? I guess what I’m suggesting, is to forget about some of the labels others have put on Jesus and ask questions. Question Jesus. Test Him. Try Him. Give Him a chance to show you who He is in your life. Our “Christian walk” is not meant to look or be the same. Everyone is different and Jesus works with people differently. For me personally, Jesus is merciful, He’s compassionate, He’s love, He’s forgiveness. But He is so much more! Jesus is more than the dos and don’ts of Christianity (religion). Don’t be afraid to mess up or to draw outside our society’s lines. I encourage anyone reading this to, no matter where you are at, whether you’ve been in church all your life to not believing in Christ, to open up the space for Him to show you who He really is. For Jonathan and his wife Aida, it’s a one day at time affair! Each day they both learn new lessons on love and Jesus! Stay tuned for next week’s story!!
