“Hey no! Don’t you dare-” Billy couldn’t help but bark out a laugh as he wrestled a sticky, dripping syrup wand away from his boyfriend, craning his neck as far back as he physically could to avoid having it smeared across his cheek. Steve grunted, still trying to fight back even as giggles started to crack through his affronted expression. “Then take it back! I am not a bad cook!” Billy side eyed the tray table, gaze darting from the plate of more-than-slightly burnt pancakes to the slightly too wet to be edible scrambled eggs sitting in a milky puddle of unspecified liquid. He slid his eyes back to Steve and raised an eyebrow, lip curled a little into an expression that implored ‘are you sure about that?’.

It had been a sweet offer, really. Breakfast in bed to celebrate their first night as a real, adult couple finally living in their own apartment. But just because they’d been together for a year didn’t mean there weren’t new things to learn about each other, including apparently that Steve was an abominable cook. A righteous squawk preceeded a renewal in Steve’s efforts, with an advantage now as Billy couldn’t stop laughing long enough to really put his full focus into the resistance. It was barely fifteen seconds before Steve managed to win out, Billy’s sugary hand slipping off the handle at last. The blonde definitely didn’t shriek when the instrument rubbed against his cheek, leaving a trail of butter flavored corn syrup from his jaw to the edge of his nose- nor did he grin like a lovesick fool when Steve leaned down to lick the syrup off the stubbled skin of his cheek, perched triumphantly on his lap in their brand new bed.

(Steve would not agree with this version of events when later recalling the tale on the day of their wedding, thirty years from their beginning. It had taken the world a little longer to understand their love than they may have hoped in their youth, but they’d stood the test of time and loved each other through every sticky minute.)

I just got back from spending time in Nawash for some training with work, and there was a lot of special moments that I can't share or don't feel ready to talk about, but there's one from the first day we got there that I do really want to share

That first night, we were all gathered around the fire, just kinda taking the time to relax and get to know each other bc we all work remotely and this is the first time we're meeting in person. While we're at the fire, a family from toronto comes over and asks if they can join us bc their 3-year-old wants to watch the fire

The parents are bilingual and speak both english and mandarin, but the little boy only speaks mandarin, and his parents said he'd been lonely while they were on holiday bc none of the other kids could speak mandarin and they didn't want to play with him bc of the language barrier. At this point, the little boy is standing near me, throwing small sticks he's finding on the ground into the fire, and I'm like. What the heck. I know a tiny bit of mandarin, maybe i can interact with him a bit, give him one moment of friendship at least

Me: *pointing at his really cool dinosaur hat* 你的帽子好看啊！

Him: 🥺😄😁 谢谢！你看看！这是我宝贝！你看看，你看看！

He comes right over and sits on the log beside mine and shows me his little orange ball. And then he puts it on the log in front of him and starts pushing the ball off the log onto the ground

The first few times, I just pick the ball up, give it back to him, and then he pushes it off again, but eventually I change it up a bit. When he pushes the ball off, I pretend like I can't find it

Me: 宝贝在哪儿？

Him: *giggling* 在这儿！

I "find" the ball and give it back, then he pushes it off again

Me: 在哪儿？

Him: 在这儿，在这儿！

We played that for a solid hour, and he kept giggling and laughing the whole time, and his parents both looked so happy that he was finally having fun on their trip. And it's just. That's the whole point of languages right? To talk to people, make new friends, build connections. Make a lonely little boy laugh as he points at his very visible orange ball and tells you "it's right there!!"

There's a lot of (lowkey condescending) people that ask me why I "bother" learning languages they see as useless or too difficult, and that's exactly why I love doing it. Bc you never know when the tiny bit of mandarin you know will make a kid laugh, or when your "useless" irish will make an old lady smile bc she misses home, or when the bits of ukrainian you picked up 5 years ago will help a refugee family find the foodbank. Language is at the heart of every culture and every community, and it's never a waste of time to learn a new one. The more languages you learn, the more people you can talk to, the more connections you can build and smiles you can share

Anyways thanks for coming to lecture, pls grab a new language on your way out so you too can make a smol child laugh

They're my OCs! A couple of friends, my sister and I were actually making an animated series for them, but we recently switched to attempting a comic. It's called the Valanite Tree and we've been working on it for about five years now ^^.

This is Sebastian! He's a little goofy but they can be serious when he needs to be :)

This is Chrisa! (Technically her name's Christina but no one calls her that). She's the local cinnamon roll and very obviously the team's favourite character fthdsjkd

This is Marcus! He's the brains of the group and the resident nerd. He's also terrible at self care. Someone help him.

And this is Kasai! Technically the main character. She's usually serious and holds the braincell of the group but leave them with these three for long enough and she starts loosening up. Also she will fight anyone who even LOOKS at their friends the wrong way.

Sorry I went kind of overboard with this they are just. very special to me.

lewis a hundred percent has fashion endeavors and seb goes to support him at every outing! galas spent with his hand on the small of lewis's back, quietly asking waiters if the hors d'oeuvres are vegan. going home after and collapsing on the sofa, jackets slung over chairs, shirts tugged out of slacks. wandering off to change and still gravitating back to the couch to watch trash soap operas and fall asleep on the other.
