here comes the massive pokemon rant 🥰🥰
Luxray, the final form of Shinx and the evolution of Luxio, is an electric type pokémon introduced in generation 4. It's a feline like pokemon, resembling a lion or a lynx. Its body is mostly covered with black fur, with its legs, torso and face being blue. The inside of its ears, the strips on his hind legs, its eyes and the star shaped tip of his tail are all yellow. In the shiny form, the blue becomes yellow and the yellow becomes orange. This pokémon also displays differences between the male and the female, as the females have a smaller mane than its male counterparts.
Tumblr media
According to the pokedex, Luxray has powerful vision. It has the capability of seeing through things, an ability it often uses to find prey, scout for danger and find its lost offspring. One of its most important appearances in the Pokemon anime was in Pokemon XY and XYZ, where Clemont, one of Ash’s companions, catches a Luxio he knew as a child, back when it was a Shinx, who had helped him with one of his most important inventions. The pokemon was shown to be loyal, caring and stoic, traits it kept after evolving in a later episode.
Though many trainers had Luxray or one of its evolutions on their team, the most well known user would be Volkner, generation 4’s electric type gym leader, who had one in the majority of his teams.
Tumblr media
When we first look at its stats, Luxray seems to be a pretty decent pokemon, with decent defenses and HP (79 and 80), high attack (120) and nice special attack (95). Unfortunately, its lowest stat is speed (70), making it slower than many other threats on every metagame. Its flaws don't end here, as it also has a rather underwhelming movepool.
Luxray is a physical electric type, a type known for not having many physical attacks, the ones available often being locked behind being signature/exclusive moves. It has three physical STAB options, Spark, a 65 base power move with a 30% chance to paralyze, Thunder Fang, a 65 base power move with a 10% chance to paralyze and a 10% chance to make the opponent flinch and Wild Charge, a 90 base power move with recoil. The rest of its most often used moves aren't too special: Superpower, a fighting type move with the downside of lowering defense and attack, one of the biting moves (Fire Fang, Ice Fang and Crunch) for coverage, Volt Switch, used to gain momento, facade, a normal type move that doubles power when the pokemon is afflicted with a status condition, which works beautifully with its hidden ability Guts, which doubles the pokemon’s attack stat if the same conditions are met. This can be easily enabled with items like the Flame Orb.
Tumblr media
Speaking of abilities, Luxray has three. The first one, and arguably the worst, is Rivalry, an ability which causes the pokemon to deal more damage to opponents of the same gender, but less damage to opponents of the opposite gender, having no effect on genderless opponents. The second is Intimidate, an ability that lowers the opponent’s attack stat by one upon entering battle, great as a defensive tool against physical threats and to hinder opponents. Finally, as I explained before, its hidden ability is Guts. It’s generally seen as the best option for an offensive Luxray, boosting his already good attack stat and working beautifully with Facade.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Luxray’s flaws tend to outweigh its strengths, therefore it has a pretty much non-existent presence in the competitive scene and, according to Smogon, it has been ranked in Untiered since gen 6, having been NU in its debut generation and PU in the next one. I spent a lot of time brainstorming about ways to make this pokemon better. Maybe switching its stats around (switching its Special Attack and its Speed), maybe giving it a well deserved stat boost (again, increasing its speed, as that ends up being the biggest problem) or just introducing new moves to its movepool, alongside a new, better STAB and more powerful and/or useful moves (stat boosting moves and healing).
We can certainly say that Luxray and its pre-evolutions are fan favorites, especially to fans who played the gen 4 games of Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. From the cute design of its baby form, to the cool, sleek design of the final form, many trainers have come to love and appreciate this amazing pokemon despite its flaws. I myself had a Luxray on my very first pokemon playthrough and it carried my team alongside my starter pokemon, to this day I remember fondly using it in difficult battles. Back then, it was a strong, amazing pokemon. Today, even after seeing its flaws and lack of competitive usage, I still believe it to be a good pokemon. Maybe one day I'll create a team revolving around it, one where it can truly shine and show its full potential. After all, the best trainers use the pokemon they love.

Just wrapped up my replay of the mainline story of Pokémon Shield, which was the third part of my marathon of Switch Pokemon games (Violet is next, once Pokemon HOME is finally enabled). Though maybe a break is in order…playing three of these games in a row is starting to wear me down.
Have a couple thoughts on the game from the few brain cells I have left that are working:
I remember hearing folks say that Sword and Shield weren’t all that great and were actually a disappointment. But I dunno…out of all the Switch games I played, aside from Violet (as well as Legends Arceus, which I don’t have), it was the most enjoyable game out of the bunch for me.
Tumblr media
I’ve heard that SwSh is very linear in terms of one player content, and…yeah, I can’t deny that. It’s a very “hallway-esque” progression throughout the main story. I like to think that the Wild Area, and especially the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC maps, try to give players a more open-ended area to explore. Of course in an environment where GTA Online and Breath of The Wild exist, you can’t impress players so easily anymore. In my opinion, though, things like the Wild Area were good for the Pokémon brand’s growth, and ultimately led to Scarlet and Violet’s open world (as buggy as it is right now). I can at least appreciate the steps it took back then to get to where it is now.
I’m actually surprised folks were complaining about the linearity, or even the lack of challenge, this game has. I remember a time when everyone wanted to blast through the main game as quickly as possible so they can get right to that Smogon shit. Things may have changed or I may have just paid attention to the wrong things, I dunno.
I will say that a lot of SwSh’s strengths are in the DLC. The expanded PokeDex and new open areas to explore really liven up the experience.
Tumblr media
Wish I could say more, but honestly I’m just burnt out on Pokémon right now. After playing through Let’s Go Eevee (which was such a delight to revisit), as well as Shining Pearl (not so much), I need a break from this shit before I get sick of Pokémon altogether, which I really don’t want to happen. I’ll still log in here and there, as to try and finish the DLC. I wanna catch my favorite bear Pokémon in Isle of Armor, and see my favorite goofy hot PokéDad in Crown Tundra. But at least for now, I better take a step back. Maybe dust off my Xbox that I’ve been neglecting for months now…

Are you obsessed with Pokémon
I've been a pokemon fan since I was 7 and first played Pokemon Blue so well over 20 years. I played every generation up until gen 6 (partially 7 but lost interest rather quickly). I still keep up with the games in spirit but my interest has been fading at the lack of direction and innovation the series has. Every once in a while I'll go back and replay pokemon Blue on emulator because I can't get enough of that game. It's the game I've replayed from start to finish more than anything else I've played, including Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (and I've played that at LEAST a dozen times).
Back as a preteen I used to frequent Smogon forums to learn how to breed Pokemon in game, learn a ton of shit about how to create battle-ready pokemon, traded with quite a few folks and got some "legal" Pokemon from folks giving breeding leftovers away, and played competitive on Showdown up until college (so around gen 6). Was I good at comp? Lmfao fuck no but I enjoyed it.
From pre gen 4-7, I frequented Smogon to discuss all the leaks that were being posted on the internet and via 4chan. I loved reading people's theories about the region we'd be in, the pokemon we'd see in the environment, coming up with speculation about what the final forms of the starters would be and what typings the box legendaries would be. I was there before pokemon released all their games simultaneously worldwide pre Gen 6, desperately waiting for leaks of the Pokedex in Japanese, and waiting for someone to crack ROMs of Black and White for emulator. And speaking of BW, only the real ones remember the Swimming Goggles ;]
Pokemon is the series that got me interested in gameplay and game mechanics and was the first RPG I ever played if I remember correctly. This series has had such profound impact on me as a person and as a gamer.
Was I obsessed with pokemon, tho? Depends on what your definition of obsessed is.

What can say to help someone who has no mind for "builds" in any game and the best I'm capable of is copying others stuff, and I just can't pick moves/abilities and items or whatever that together myself?
Luckily for us, there are a lot of team-building resources for competitive pokemon! If you are wanting to make a team around a Pokemon, I always recommend going with one of the most common sets. This will make building the team a lot easier since there will be a lot of examples to look at. You can find common sets on Smogon’s pokedex, this blog, or the usage stats Pokemon Showdown makes available. If you’re not building your team around this Pokemon, but you still want to include it, things can get a bit more complicated.
Be warned: I go on quite the long explanation here. Click the read more if you want to do so. Sorry mobile users.
The first thing you want to ask yourself is what role the Pokemon is playing on the team. Some Pokemon are fairly one dimensional and have set roles (take Blissy or Barraskewda for example), while others can do a variety of things.
For the sake of explaining things, let’s take Landorus-Therian, one of the most versatile Pokemon ever made. Now, let’s look at one of the sample teams on Smogon that normally has Lando on it: https://pokepast.es/0762e3d8032e86ae
These five Pokemon (Regieleki, Magearna, Garchomp, Spectrier, and Cinderace for those who are too lazy to click on a link.) create a very powerful offensive team on their own, but lack a ground immunity, making Landorus-T a good fit. Now, since this is a hyper-offense team that relies on putting out constant pressure, all of the defensive sets Landorus can run aren’t really going to be in the running. That means we probably aren’t running Defog, either.
Now looking at these five, I notice that there isn’t a Stealth Rock setter. Garchomp can, but this person is opting to run a Swords Dance breaking set which doesn’t really have room for Stealth Rocks. That means we really need to have a Stealth Rock setter. Landorus can do that really well, so we’ve already got one move down. Really, we have two down because there’s no way we’re running a Landorus without Earthquake.
Landorus-Therian (M)   Ability: Intimidate   - Earthquake   - Stealth Rock
The rest of the set is going to be up to personal preference. On this team I would probably run a leading set with Focus Sash and Explosion so that I can guarantee that Stealth Rocks are put up for the rest of my Pokemon. I noticed that a lot of these Pokemon really need the chip damage from rocks to guarantee K.O.s. The last move I would run then would be a coverage move like Stone Edge or something. The person who built this team went a slightly different route and is running Swords Dance in this last slot. I like that decision a lot, as it helps them break through things and get off a really powerful explosion if their Landorus is going to be useful later in the game.
You could also go down a completely different route if you wanted to, though. Say you don’t want Landorus to be a lead, and you want to go with Swords Dance and Stone Edge in the last two slots so that it can be of more use in the mid-game, for example. At the end though, you’ll just want to pick something and then test out your team and notice what works and what doesn’t. If you never use one of your moves, then maybe you should pick something else. If you’re noticing that your team is really having issues with speed control, maybe you’ll want to change one of your sets to a Scarf set, or use a different Pokemon entirely. There are a lot of options in Pokemon, but once you narrow it down, thing’s can get a lot easier.
I really hope this helped. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!

Obligatory Pokemon Rant
Tumblr media
Now, I’m not the first person to point this out or say all these points, so I’ll just give you the cliff notes that make up the foundation of my rant.
>Ever since Gen 6, the Pokemon Games have been getting easier/GameFreak has been focusing primarily on its younger audience and has been ignoring the longterm fans.
>Pokemon has gotten stale with its repetitive/linear storytelling.
>Pokemon’s idea of mixing the battle system up is adding a new gimmick that only a handful of Pokemon get, usually the older ones/fan favorites while other mons who could use it more get ignored and these gimmicks either get pushed aside, ignored, or just abandoned by the next gen.
Now that we got the foundation out of the way, allow me to get to the point of this: if Pokemon’s not gonna evolve with the times, they should at least find some kind of happy medium between making their younger audience happy and making their older fans happy. And, personally speaking, I don’t mean releasing a sequel to Pokemon Snap.
Tumblr media
Seriously, I feel, like, the only person who didn’t ask for this...
Now, there’s at least, like, one point I’m gonna bring up that was in this video by JelloApocalypse, so for the sake of putting down my references, I’ll just put a link in the video below, which I really like and sometimes listen to.
youtube
That video probably has better ideas than my own anyway, so I think you should watch it anyway. In fact, no hate if you prefer Jello’s video to my 4 AM rant that’s only being written cause I got over an upset stomach and slept all day and now all my buddies are asleep cause they got REAL lives.
So, here’s what I mean by Pokemon striking a happy medium between satisfying both halves of their fan base; since Pokemon likes to make two different games and seems to just be 100% against putting in some kind of ‘Hard Mode’, then why not make a ‘Normal Game’ and a ‘Hard Game’?
Tumblr media
Like, instead of a ‘Sword & Shield’, we’d get ‘Pokemon A’ and then, like, 6-7 months later, we get ‘Pokemon B’ And, no, B isn’t just an Emerald or Crystal, where it’s the same game with a few tweaks and quality of life improvements, it’s just a straight-up harder game with the story MAYBE being expanded upon to be more mature. That way, Pokemon can still have it’s kid-friendly atmosphere to cater to its target demographic and the older fans can patiently wait for their game to come later.
And if they don’t wanna wait? Then they can also sell the game as DLC to the Pokemon A crowd as a half-off DLC pack, like buying a New Game Plus function. So that way, the people wanting more out of Pokemon can get a game tailored to their skill level, and those who want to just play Pokemon can get that experience AND have the option to try a harder game.
Tumblr media
And for all the tough-as-nails players who just buy and train Pokemon for the competitive scene...like, no. Ya’ll ain’t valid. Actually, no, we’re not valid. XD Like, Pokemon should just make some kind of ‘Pokemon Simulator’ thing in their games, so players can just do ‘Virtual Battles’ for the competitive.
Because, like, jokes aside; it’s really dumb to have to keep charts of what IVs and EVs do and how to grind them for the UBERmons and breed them for the SPECIFIC ability and SPECIFIC nature that goes with that ability and-
Stop. No. Just stop.
Tumblr media
Just put Pokemon Showdown into the game. Make it, like, a thing in the Pokemon Center and you can build simulated teams and all the stuff you can do in Pokemon Showdown proper. I refuse to believe that there’s nobody at GameFreak who just isn’t aware of what the hell Pokemon Showdown is. Pokemon fangames are sniped and wiped out of existence like a Thanos Snap, but Smogon is still under the radar? Tauros Shit.
Hell, you want it to be a thing in the game? Say you can only use Pokemon if you’ve seen them in your Pokedex and you can look them up online in your PC, so you don’t have to catch a Pokemon in order to use it in your simulator.
Tumblr media
Maybe there’s a bunch of Super Nerds running around and if you beat them, they’ll upload a bunch of Pokemon data into your dex or something, so you can use them in your simulator without needing to spend, like, 10 hours trying to find this uber rare Pokemon that can only be found in this one dungeon 5% of the time.
My point is that Pokemon has no reason to not make two different versions of one game with the difference being difficulty. People for years have been wanting harder Pokemon Games, at LEAST since Gen 6, if not further back. And it sucks when old time fans have to grapple with ‘am I too old for Pokemon’ or ‘was Pokemon always bad’?
Like, I’ve been playing since Gen 1, I only stopped watching the anime fairly recently and when I see snippets of it and clips it’s still just SO HYPE!
Tumblr media
Like, this battle was amazing! I don’t care for the general direction the anime has gone for, but even an old man like me can say that this battle was so cool to watch and that the anime has these REALLY GOOD MOMENTS of really great story telling that just blows seasons prior out of the water. I don’t gotta like it to tell you that the anime is still good.
So, yeah. TL;DR: If Pokemon won’t make a Normal and Hard Mode, then they should make a Normal Game, and a Harder Game/Mode as DLC a few months later.
PS: stop making version exclusive Pokemon. Most people aren’t gonna shill out the money for both games.

How Ducktales Characters Play Pokemon
Huey: Competitive, 6 IV team. Knows type matchups by heart and follows Smogon tiers religiously.
Dewey: Only levels up his starter.
Louie: Spends more time in the Game Corner and other side modes than he does exploring the game.
Webby: Cries cause she loves every Pokemon she comes across and you can only carry 6 at a time.
Fenton: Trying to complete the Pokedex and screaming cause he can’t find people willing to trade their Mythicals.
Launchpad: Nicknames all Pokemon he catches. Spends half an hour trying to find a Pokemon in his PC boxes cause he has too many Pokemon.
Della: Angry that wi-fi and online trading weren’t available when she was a kid because she could never get the Pokemon that evolved via trade since she kept misplacing the Link Trade cable.
Donald: Rage quit on Whitney and swore off the series ever since.
Mark Beaks: Banned from official tournaments for life due to using hacked Pokemon.
Glomgold: Terrorizes the Lv 2 Bidoof population with a Lv 100 Arceus and laughs maniacally about it.
Scrooge: Doesn’t play Pokemon. Every Pokemon is named Pikachu to him.

My Two Coins:  Legacy
Disclaimer: "My Two Coins" are to be read as such, someone's two coins about the topic at hand. IF at any point you disagree with it or agree, remember they are just my coins about said topic and the value you have of it will differ from my own because of religion, upbringing, beliefs, and logic based on your own experiences. Do not assume my coins are the international equivalent for it may be considered of a lesser value in the bank of public exchange. Thank you.
Ever since generation three moved to the fourth, we were given the chance to keep up with our team and make sure that we are never without them.  We gained a lot of things.  New legacies, New Pokemon, and even new moves that allow you to be more intelligent with your game.  And you can be proud of what you have done over the ages.
So why in Giratina’s reversed world would people support cutting out legacy when there are so many questions and problems still to be solved?!
Welcome ladies and gentlemen of all ages. You've found a wild Jewelwriter.
And I’m likely going to be video bombing the fudge out of this with a triad of them but I’ll try to keep this from getting too long.  But first a note.  The Treehouse showed Pokemon and one of the things said is that only Pokemon that are rendered into the Galar Pokedex will be showed and it is themed on the Pokemon that will show up in that region. (How some Pokemon are there and others aren’t is a mystery.)  But the thing is they are rendering only those Pokemon.
Even if the future models of all the Pokemon were made in gen 6 and sure proofed over 700 Pokemon back then and got the number up to 800 plus the ‘regional variants’ and added new models and the like; all of this is rendered pointless for ‘balance’, ‘time crunch’, ‘memory’, and ‘graphics’.  Allow me to bite each of these.  Starting with the one I know people will hate, ESPECIALLY the PINK SMOGON PONY! (You know who you are.)
[Balance] “Pokemon has over 800 Pokemon.  They all can’t be good and they all can’t stay.” “This game got too many of the same top rated Pokemon and this is going to shake up the game." I heard this Karp before and I say, blame the people who top for not changing things up.  If anything a saying is probably the best of all to describe this bit of BS as utter trash.
“Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best.” -Karen, Johto Elite Four Member
And if you really want to balance the BLEEPING game, I got the easiest of ideas everyone can agree on and make those legend lovers cry: Make all Pokemon that are Breeding able be allowed in all future competitions. The Landorus can’t get it on, Cresselia can’t get a mon, and even our Lord and founder Arceus (will never be a Helix member, bite me!) can’t just arrive from above and give some Female Pokemon the Zeus treatment without the problems of such a god.  That will thin the herd a lot and can give people more creative options in competition but allow the gods to be usable in free battle and special rules for legendary and Mythicals so they can be used OUTSIDE of being Pokemon storage spaces.

[Time Crunch] “We the fans deserve the games as fast as possible at high quality.” “Everyone knows that the games were in three-year intervals and all the others turned out good.” “We are getting extra games” This is something I personally will not see can be defended since there’s a quote that should have been kept in mind with this and has been shown for ages.
“A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”- Shigeru Miyamoto (2012)

[Memory] “Memory is limited, do you want this game to be over 64GB?“ “Space is limited and development is hard.” Sometimes I wish that you people would listen to yourselves.  Technology is able to be worked around.  We got unlimited space.  We can do it all now that we got more technological freedom.  And yet I gotta say it,  Tech is still limited but there’re ways to SHRINK the space used, of using space effectively to make it not so hard to program.  Also, following trends is able to break the flow of gameplay.  Sure, one says that fighting in real time would be one of the next steps in the Pokemon battles, but when a series sticks to their guns and not bend always to the will of tends, the people gain more things than imagined.  I'm saying don't follow what is going on with the business but keep in mind what the people want to a degree.  If you just suddenly don’t make all the characters accessible in some shape or form by the time they are at the post game when you have done it for years (As in you can obtain any Pokemon from the past in some shape or form) then you are going to break your audience’s minds in the WRONG way.  It was bad enough that some features got ignored or things got distilled (Post game, Megas, Mini games to name the big ones that most want to re-experience.) but to do something like what is happening now is going to make a bigger wave than ever in a negative direction.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJj0B8Zm_Z0
[Video Intermission]
[Graphics] “This is what Pokemon is about.  No more chibi looks and the like.” “Pokemon in a more realistic light means that we all can be more immersed in this game.” WHEN HAS GRAPHICS BEEN IMPORTANT... IN A POKEMON GAME?  This is a game of tactics, Intelligence, mind games and no sign of Quick Time Events or Reaction commands.  It’s in a way a light RPG (which I know some will say it’s not really an RPG but seriously... it is an RPG where you gain party members, get them stronger, Gain stats, and make them into your warriors) but it’s still a fun thing that anyone can do if given the time and methods.  There’re people that are willing to go through the hard work and in a way it’s like World of Warcraft with how they have the Classic variant and the newest one.  People are starting to flock over because of Classic because they feel like they earned their gains and not got pushed into them like it’s free candy.
=====
But this is likely not going to be heard.  This is likely not going to be addressed.  And in the end I bet you that people will be muted by the people that are ignorant to the problems at hand.  But tell me what you think somewhere.
As for me... this wild one runs away!

More internet garbage today (sorry)! From Smogon Strategy Pokedex, Spinda's page for D/P starts like this: "Suffocate in a Heatran. Seriously, what was Game Freak eating when they shat out this pitiful excuse for a Pokemon? It has a great movepool--in fact, it's one that extends out ad infinitum--but its stats went down the crapper. At least Spinda has many uses, which are... yeah I got nothing." It literally goes on that way for a whole page. I wish you a good night! Thanks for your art.
AH YEAH ive read some smogon entries like that LMAO
i think castform has one of these wacky strat descriptions too
spinda might be the most obscure pokemon of all. because i literally just remembered it exists

New Segment: Pokemon Reviews!
So, despite this blog being more or less a fiction reviews blog, it’s just been hard to read and find other things. But I’ve been crazy addicted to raising competitive Pokemon, so I just decided, why not just make posts about Pokemon?
However, I’m always willing to say, right off the top, I’m nowhere near a top trainer. I’m just what Smogon and a lot of VGC players call, “A filthy casual”, so these will be written through the experiences and testing of a casual. Since this is Sun and Moon, I’ll go over several things.
-
First off, here would be just my description of the Pokemon itself. I would say just normal decriptions, but it’ll just be my opinion based on how it plays. Then, the rest will be seperated into three different sections: Single Battles, Doubles, and Battle Royales. Again, it’s mainly from a casual point of view, I just go off from what I commonly see whenever I go into Battle Spot or look at the info on the VGC competitions. (Which is the same Top Ten Pokemon every single competition)
I’ll probably just start with Pokemon I’m training with, or just off the PokeDex. If you got a Pokemon you want me to review, lemme know in my Ask Box. I’ll grab one in the game, breed it and see how it does.

Shiny Pokemon in Generation One VC
Tumblr media
The first thing you need to know is why shiny Pokemon can be ‘obtained’ in generation one. Because RGBY and GSC were cross-compatible and shininess was a new mechanic in generation two. As such, they just used the DV system from generation one to be the determining factor for shininess. Gender used DVs too!
What’s a DV?
DVs are the name for IVs in generation 1+2 - instead of from 0-31, DVs are 0-15! The best way to describe a DV would be a hidden value that every stat has that influences how high that stat can reach! It’s not base stats though and it has nothing to do with how you train your Pokemon! Think of it like genetics.
 Let me give an example.
An Articuno at level 50 could have the following stats HP: 165 Attack: 105 Defence: 120 Speed: 105 Special: 145 While another could have this set: HP: 150 Attack: 90 Defence: 105 Speed: 90 Special: 130
The top example has a DV of 15 in every stat while the bottom example has a DV of 0 in every stat. This illustrates the effects DVs can have!
EVs still exist in the game and you only have to worry about them if you have battled with the Pokemon you want to check the DVs for. If you need to level up a Pokemon to check its DVs keep a track of all the Pokemon it fights. These don’t effect the DVs but do effect how easy it is to tell what your Pokemon’s DVs are.
To make things simpler: just look at Pokemon who haven’t battled! eg. A newly caught legendary!
The HP DV
First let me explain a little interesting thing with the HP DV that might make the next section make more sense. The HP DV does not have an RNG call, it instead pulls its number from the other 4 stats based on whether or not they’re even or odd. It just made it simpler for the programmers I’d imagine!
The HP starts at 0. If Attack is odd +8, if Attack is even +0 If Defence is odd +4, if Defence is even +0 If Speed is odd +2, if Speed is even +0 If Special is odd +1, if Special is even +0
So this is super helpful for determining if a level 50 Pokemon is shiny at a glance, as the only DV value that can be odd is defence in the case of the Virtual Console and attack in the case of the originals.
How does this effect shininess?
To find a shiny in generation two you need a specific set of DVs. In generation one to two the DVs required a different set of DVs compared to Virtual Console to generation seven.
There are 8 shiny DV combinations out of  65,536 possible combinations.
RGBY VC -> SM HP: 0, 4 Attack: 10 Defence:  2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15 Speed: 10 Special: 10
RGBY -> GSC
HP: 0, 8 Attack: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15 Defence: 10 Speed: 10 Special: 10
As you can see, the only difference is defence and attack is swapped. The stats vary from Pokemon to Pokemon so I would recommend using a DV calculator to check your specific Pokemon!
What Pokemon can be shiny in Generation One?
To keep things simple, any Pokemon that isn’t a random encounter Pokemon can have the shiny DV combination. Fishing encounters are considered separate things. There are possible exceptions but these are specific Safari Zone Pokemon and I’m not 100% sure on this information.
At level 50 you can see the DVs very clearly. While levels below 50 have discrepancies.
For example, at level 30 a Pokemon could have a stat of 40 and the DV may be either 3 or 4. When they are level 50 it will clearly be one or the other.
Why can’t wild Pokemon be shiny?
Pokemon RGBY didn’t have much memory, so had a lot of overlap in how the RNG worked. This thread over on Smogon has a lot of details about why this is the case. There’s also a link to a video that explains the RNG better!
Basically, based on the encounter rate of a Pokemon, the pool of DV combinations that wild Pokemon can have reduces significantly. This makes the 8 DV combinations that can be shiny, impossible!
So no, you can’t catch a Pokemon at a high level in Cerulean Cave and check its stats for shininess. This was false information.
Example Pokemon
All this a bit confusing? Want to just hunt the legendaries?
In that case, you just need to look out for one of these stat combinations:
Tip: Take a glance at the HP stat from the status menu, if it doesn’t have the right HP you don’t have to look at the rest of the stats, you can just reset~
For RGBY Game Boy games to GSC AND For RGBY Virtual Console Games to Generation 7:
Zapdos HP: 150, 158 Attack: 97, 98, 101, 102, 105, 106, 109, 110 Defence: 100 Speed: 115 Special: 140 Articuno HP: 150, 158 Attack: 92, 93, 96, 97, 100, 101, 104, 105 Defence: 115 Speed: 100 Special: 140 Moltres HP: 150, 158 Attack: 107, 108, 111, 112, 115, 116, 119, 120 Defence: 105 Speed: 105 Special: 140 Mewtwo HP: 228, 239 Attack: 161, 163, 167, 168, 173, 174, 178, 180 Defence: 145 Speed: 201 Special: 234
If there are any mistakes, please let me know and I’ll fix them ASAP!
Former Virtual Console RGBY for transferring to Sun and Moon NO LONGER VALID AS OF LATEST UPDATE: Zapdos HP: 150, 154 Attack: 105 Defence: 92, 93, 96, 97, 100, 101, 104, 105 Speed: 115 Special: 140 Articuno HP: 150, 154 Attack: 100 Defence: 107, 108, 111, 112, 115, 116, 119, 120 Speed: 100 Special: 140 Moltres HP: 150, 154 Attack: 115 Defence: 97, 98, 101, 102, 105, 106, 109, 110 Speed: 105 Special: 140 Mewtwo HP: 228, 234 Attack: 173 Defence: 133, 135, 139, 140, 145, 146, 150, 152 Speed: 201 Special: 234
Steps to Hunting
Step 1: Make sure you have a Master Ball! Put it in the top slot of your inventory! Step 2: Save in front of your legendary of choice! Step 3: Encounter it, press down, press A for quick Master Ball throwing action! (this will get picked up by your muscle memory really fast, basically this step is just throw the Master Ball) Step 4: Check HP, don’t go into the Pokemon’s stats, just look for the HP value listed above! If it’s not the correct HP reset and try again! Step 5: If it has the right HP go to the status of the Pokemon and check the rest of the stats. Are they correct? Congrats! If not, reset and try again!
I’d recommend counting your soft resets so you can feel like you’re making progress~ Gotta go fast! These resets should take about 40-50 seconds each. You can speed it up by filling the Pokedex entry for your Pokemon of choice before you shiny hunt by trading with a game with that Pokemon already.
Feel free to ask any questions if you’re still confused! But please read everything here, your question might already be answered but worded differently~

I am in the mood to begin this episode with a good ol’ fashioned scuffle ! Though this guy better not have Hariyama..... I don’t even know if poor FIlIS could handle a hit from a Hariyama...... yes I’m still bitter about losing Kyuubi.
Nah he had an Absol..... not much of a scuffle since Kitten basically ended it with a fake out and a U-turn.
Speaking of scuffles I hear there is trouble at ye ol Malie Garden, so that’s where I’ll be heading next.
Tumblr media
Kukui please.... in a battle where you only use 4 moves don’t tell them what moves you’ll be using..... and don’t lie you’re just going to send out Rockruff and spam protect.
Tumblr media
Oh my it’s ya boy Guzma..... I am so hype for this upcoming battle.  Slay me Guzma slay me.  I like Guzma for the same reason I like Gladdion.  I like Gladdion’s hoodie.... I like Guzma’s sweat pants.  So comfortable looking.
To get real for a second, whoever, during this conversation I was doing some thinking about Kukui and he might actually be my favorite Pokemon professor ever.  I mean sure he isn’t in his lab doing research he is out on this adventure and pursuing a career in the Royal Rumble, but he is a professor that specializes in Pokemon moves so it makes sense he is out and about trying to get a Pokemon League going and getting involved with some battles.
He is doing research without hiding in a lab expecting a ten-year-old to fill out a Pokedex.
Professor Sycamore was a Mega Evolution expert, but wasn’t spamming mega evolve as much as me.  Really what did he even do other than act rapey towards my female OC?  Kukai is in there doing stuff.
I’ve been worried about this fight for a while because Guzma’s Golispod is no push over...... but then the idiot went ahead and used swords dance twice on a pokemon with emergency exit.  Okay....
I got some bug weaknesses on my team still so I sent out DOGE who took care of this battle with nothing more than a work up and head butt.  (I need to find that Return TM) I made sure to award DOGE with a rainbow bean again for his efforts.
After the battle Kukui gave me a Decidum Z..... too bad Mr. Owl has been on Hiatus for a long time.  Doesn’t he know this a Nuzelocke.... where is my Gogoatium Z?
Tumblr media
In honor of DOGE’s triumph I gave him another hair cut to rock out this episode.
Now it’s off to Route 12 to go on the search for some more plot and an encounter.  On Route 12 I caught Lefty the Mudbray.
Tumblr media
I named it after one of many the Beanie Babies I use to have.  The democrat donkey Beanie Baby.  Oh man.... it doesn’t look like anything really great is happening in the hasty box.... cept for maybe a Lucario.
Tumblr media
Wound up with Ducky Momo the Psyduck.  Have no idea what this name means, but at least it has a few moves and I’ve given up on the idea of bumpounder ever being a Vaporeon replacement so I can’t complain.
Went back to route 12 to clear it out some trainers.  Kitten is almost level 40 and that’s just from doing it’s current job of using fake out and then U-turning it out of there.  I’ll probably be using this strategy on that pesky Ghost Trial whenever I get to that point.
Apparently Cosmog is in danger.... I mean good.  Is living in Lilly’s bag really what you would call a life?  It could use a little danger to switch things up a bit.
Got a few more encounters to exchange.  I had to catch a couple of Karps with repeat and quick balls.... is this what it feels like to be one of the human dumpster fires that throws that crap into Wonder Trade?
Tumblr media
From the Secluded Shore we have Catfish the Magikarp with an Impish nature.  It was exchanged for...
Tumblr media
Not Bun the Pikachu..... more like Not Fun.... Impish is a horrible nature for a Pikachu and this coming from someone that rocks an adamant Raichu.
Tumblr media
From Route 13 we got Fillet the Magikarp with a Naughty Nature.... a box I’ve been visiting a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a tie between Fuc* me the Crabrawler and Cotton the Cottonee.
RNG tells me Cotton, and that’s fine because I don’t like how that Crabrawler is looking at me even though I’m literally drowning in grass types right now.
Tumblr media
Seems like we are going back to the ‘Naughty’ Box with Walda the Raticate I caught in Tapu Village.
The exchange is....
Tumblr media
oooooooooo Pegasus the Ponyta.... I don’t think I’ve actually used a Ponyta since gen 1 so it’d be interesting if I get to use it this locke.
Now back to the plot!
Tumblr media
I will once again be a Team Skull apologist and believe this grunt is doing nothing wrong at the moment.  If you see something say something.  That’s all he is doing to keep the community safe.
With that out of the way time for the big episode scuffle as I go through the abandoned grocery store to take on a big Mimikyu.  Glad this is my second time playing this game.  First time that Mimikyu almost gave me a heart attack when I found it with the pokefinder.
Time for some champion strats.  Fake out won’t work so let’s just u-turn it out of there to break it’s disguise!
Tumblr media
Good thing Kitten likes me and U-turn got it right out!  Mimikyu outspeeds me and play rough hurt really bad.  I am going to have to switch into something that can take a hit.  Mis Gender knows T-wave so I just need to slow it down.
Haunter got called in for the assist.... Mis Gender can take a play rough but not two attacks from two different Pokemon... and this strategy was in vain, because apparently Mimikyu is holding on to a lum berry so it recovered from paralysis.... silly Mimikyu Smogon says you should be holding a focus sash.  Silly Mimikyu.
Tumblr media
I got mixed feelings about this death....
On the one hand I didn’t believe Mis Gender would be going to the end with me.  Illumise is a bulky bug that has a few tricks up it’s sleeve but as the game goes on and you’re dealing with evolved Pokemon at a higher level it loses its sparkle..... but on the other hand it died in vain because I couldn’t get a T-wave on Mimikyu..... poor Illumise I’ll never know what your gender was.
Time for Plan B and by that I mean Plan Bean.  Mimikyu is using mostly physical attacks and Bean can take a hit as well as set up an Acid Armor or two to protect itself before fighting.
Once I had my acid armor set up, however, I had to bring in some rain to rely on Hydration, because Haunter wants to sit there and spam hypnosis and hydration will give me a free heal from sleep.
Only problem with that strategy is when I fell asleep I still missed out on my turn since these Pokemon are too fast compared to Bean.  It’s a good thing I got my acid armor in though for it kept me alive throughout all of this.
Once I was finally allowed to make a move I used my Z-Power and took Mimikyu out in one hit.  That was for you Mis Gender.... I still feel guilty...
Tumblr media
The battle has been won, but before I end things I have a few more encounters to deal with so I don’t forget next time I play.
Tumblr media
We got Ramsey B. (Ramsey Bolton tho should be Snow) the Raticate caught on Route 15 that has a Rash nature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A tie between Gabby and dinner.  RNG decided upon Gabby.... I guess I just wasn’t hungry enough.  Where was a reliable poison type during the last battle Gabby?
Tumblr media
There is Poach Me the Pelipper (I really hate Pelippers design), which was caught on Route 14 with a Lonely nature.  It gets exchanged for:
Tumblr media
Great another Pikachu..... I don’t know what to make of its name.... I doubt this was a friend to someone, because it’s clearly someone’s route captured Kalos Pikachu.... does it like the TV show FRIENDS?
One more encounter left to exchange....
Tumblr media
Fat Bat the Golbat captured at the Mega Thrifty Megamart that has a serious nature.
In exchange I get:
Tumblr media
Meloetta? The Shuppet..... oooooo it’s cool that I got an actual ghost type from where I should have got a ghost type encounter.  It was clearly given this nickname by someone who wanted to communicate to ask for a Meloetta in link trade.... and for that I already have a head canon.  It got so bitter of being used and abused for means of communication it formed a grudge against Meloetta and now it shall dedicate it’s life to finding and destroying Meloetta.
