Cold.

Metal.

We crashed.

I’m still alive.

I look to the right. Pilot 19 of 1000 is halfway out of the cockpit. He’s obviously dead. 

I’m still alive. Maybe I won’t die nameless. At least if I can get out of this.

Arms and legs can move. Good. I unlatch from my seat and pull my feet out of a snowdrift. 

Next task, weapons. 

The floor of the plane is covered with moldy feathers and snow. My feet make a soft crunching sound as I maneuver through the mess, on my way to the back of the front part of the shattered plane.

“Fucking deadbirds,” I say to myself.

At the weapons locker, I grab two rifles, a supply of bullets, and two cherry blossom grenades. Also, I find the top half of Fention’s body. A badly injured deadbird is half-heartedly pecking at it. 

I kick the deadbird. “Get off there.”

It breaks apart into a pile of bones and greyish mess. 

A blood trail streaks from Fention’s torso, marking a 50 foot path across the snowfield, to the back half of the plane. 

“What a mess,” I say. 

I’m alone. 

19 made a mayday call before we went down, so hopefully someone’s coming. I find the transponder, key in an SOS and start hoping. 

Shuffle.

Shuffle, Shuffle.

Movement sounds in the snow. I look to the south. 

About thirty zombies are stagger-running towards my position. Wonderful. 

“Hope my SOS got through,” I mutter.

I check the motion detector. So far it looks like they’re just coming from the south. 

Clouds of snowspray fly as they race towards me. I aim and start firing.

Bullet, Bullet, Bullet.

Zombie Screams. Zombie Thuds in Snow

More bullets.

More Zombie Thuds and Screams.

I throw my grenade.

Explosion. Shrapnel. Cherry Blossoms. Zombie Thuds in Snow.

It’s over quickly. “865 of 1000, this is quite a mess you’ve made.” I scan the carnage for any survivors. 

A rescue helicopter arrives. A team of soldiers disembarks to secure the plane wreck. 

Private 10K678 approaches me. “You can give report to Lieutenant Rees. We’ll secure your cargo.”

“Sergeant 865. What happened?” Lieutenant Rees asks.

“Deadbirds. We encountered a flock of them. Some got sucked into the engines, and down we went.”

“Was someone controlling them or were they free?”

I shrug. “Hard to say, but I’d have to guess they were under control, since I was attacked by that pack of zombies right after we crashed.”

Rees rolls his eyes. “Wonderful. Zombies in Antarctica. They’re now officially all over the Southern Hemisphere. I’ll have to pass this up the chain.”

He pulls out a manila envelope. “Here’s your next assignment. You even get a name.”

I pull out the assignment. “Bertram T. Weevil. What’s the T stand for?”

“Thunderbird. It suits you.”

“Really?”

“Yes.” He smiles. “Is there a problem?”

“No,” I answer. “Bertram T. Weevil it is then.”
