My hottest take of all time is that Mike is (was) the main character of Stranger Things.
Now, do I think he still is? No. Not really.
TBH I would argue that ALL the OG's are main characters in their own way at this point, with them all getting somewhat similar amounts of screen-time across the board by s4.
But if we're talking about the first two seasons, Finn was indeed credited before both Millie and Noah. The only actors that were credited before him were Winona and David (respectfully).
Just rewatching s1-2, you can see very clearly that Mike is being framed as the main character, with his perspective being favored in big group sequences, with us following him places that we don't really follow others, and for longer periods of time.
What I find interesting, is that even though Noah revealed recently that the Duffer's have been slowly building up/hinting at Will's feelings for Mike since the beginning, it's Mike whose perspective we were usually seeing in all those moments.
In s1, we see Mike looking for Will, with Noah only having like a handful of scenes that entire season. We also get more of a focus on Mike's reactions in comparison to the other party members.
In s2, we see Mike making every effort to support Will all season. It's Mike whose reaching out to Will constantly, calling to see why he's not at school, going by his house, sleeping over for days and staying by his bedside at Hawkins lab. Although Will arguably plays a bigger role in the upside down aspect of the show this season, a large portion of Mike and Will moments focused on Mike's feelings for Will being shared through Mike's POV, and not so much the other way around.
It isn't until s3 that Millie starts being credited before Finn (and respectfully so, as she was arguably bringing in more hype in terms of fandom excitement back in those days, so I do get it). And so we're arguably going from Mike centric (s1), to Will centric (s2), to El centric (s3).
As a result, we also started seeing less of Mike's POV. Though, to be fair there are 10+ new characters joining every season, so EVERYONE is getting less screen-time, every season.
But isn't it so convenient, that when we start getting less insight into Mike's POV, he starts acting strange...? And we don't really get outright answers as to why? Answers that we would probably have if we had Mike's POV as much as we used to?
S3 is when we started getting Will's POV more when it came to him and Mike's relationship. Their dynamic sort of flips between s1-2 vs. s3-4.
Not to say we never get Mike's POV anymore, but when we do, it's hard to discern and so most people overlook it completely on the rare occasion that it does pop up.
Anyways, this whole concept reminded me of the main character shots we got at the end of s4.
These were shots that had multiple characters in the frame, but with only (1) person specifically at the forefront...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
YALL KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS???
Arguably, these three main characters storyline's are tied together in a substantial way, and how it all plays out could have been foreshadowed, by the very order and even blocking of these shots.
Think about it.!?!.
Mike was arguably the main character of s1, which means getting his POV at the forefront again would be going back to the shows roots.
Will is arguably the main character of s2, and so blending Mike's arc (ending with Mike hugging Hopper hmmmmmm... Mike accepting his sexuality??) with Will's unreliable narrator arc being resolved (ending with Will and Mike side by side hmmmmmmm... Will getting the boy??), and this combined with Will's connection to the upside down, blending perfectly with his wonder twin, El's storyline (El walking passed Mike and Will.... El dumping his ass again??), with her now at the forefront as the main character, arguably just like in s3, except now she has full autonomy for the first time in the show, she knows her worth, she's accepted herself. And this all coming to a head with those three and everyone in the shows arcs being resolved by the end??
BITCH???

to be real for a second, i think there is a moment in the show where mike has a ~realization~ of sorts about his feelings but hasn't quite put two and two together yet.... and it's this:
Tumblr media
this realization of "hey my feelings for will are actually maybe different than my feelings for my other friends, but i'm not sure why" happens at the end of season two. and then mike spends the entirety of season three acting sort of strange and different around will while having his relationship with him constantly juxtaposed with his relationship with el. reaching the end of that season which, despite all the supernatural shit going on, took the time to focus so heavily on those two relationships (and how fundamentally different they are), and having mike have the same realization he had at the end of season two makes no sense because it would mean he accomplished absolutely nothing in his emotional arc during the course season three
Tumblr media Tumblr media
especially to claim that he still believes he has feelings for el going into season 4. especially to claim he still believes he has feelings for el by the end of season 4. it's to claim that he has not made any emotional progress in his relationships for at least two full seasons, that he's been going through all of this for it to not have made any conscious impact on him, and the changes in the way he acts from s2-3 and from s3-4 aren't a product of his character developing (growing, changing, to quote hopper's letter) but rather..... ? i don't know actually. just him feeling weird but not understanding himself at all. still. it just doesn't make sense to me. he's one of the main characters of the show, and to keep him emotionally stagnant for 4 out of 5 seasons (especially when we can see that his behavior is changing, that he has not been stagnant at all but rather deeply affected by everything) would be a disservice to his character, first of all, but also a disservice to the narrative which has been showing us his (as well as the other characters') struggle with growing up and growing into himself every season. and it simply doesn't align with what we're being shown
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
mike is already having realizations by the end of season two. but by the end of season three, he's starting to be really honest with himself about what they mean

"will shouldn't use a gun in season five because his father probably taught him how to use one and that could be a bad reminder for him" have you considered that will using what was very likely a Bad experience to save his life in what is undoubtedly an even worse experience could be a good thing? have you considered that him using a skill he was forced to learn to save not only himself but (as is likely more important and meaningful to him) the lives of others could give him a sense of usefulness and safety knowing that he isn't defenseless and can stand his and others' ground if need be? especially considering that's a skill that we've only seen hopper and nancy possess, making it that much more valuable and himself more helpful to the group? after everything in s1 and s2, he's probably felt guilty for having endangered them and dozens of other people multiple times, i don't think it'd be out there for him to feel "happy" that he can finally return the favor and protect them for once (especially after having complained about being babied and treated like a doll).
"will doesn't have and shouldn't have powers because that makes him different and he doesn't want to be different" not only are you wrong lol <3 but how have you not noticed that will's entire thing since the very beginning is that he is different and he knows it and while he does get his heart broken over the fact that this means he faces constant unfairness in life, he still refuses to be any other way? will doesn't conform nor does he ever try to even when others try to force or shame him to. he gets frustrated and upset at being treated differently, yes, but he stays true to himself. to battle that feeling he sometimes gets that tells him he's a mistake, a feeling he gets not from his own otherness but from living in a world that Makes it an otherness and thus isolates him for it, he seeks out that which he loves and enjoys and throws himself wholeheartedly at it. will lives his truth and is willing to suffer the consequences for it. he refuses to live in darkness and let it take a hold of him. he holds on to hope and all that makes him feel better for being different. he holds on to art, to dnd, to video games, to his family and his friends, and everything that brings him joy and reminds him that it's okay to be different. in s1 joyce defends will ("he's missing is what he is") and jonathan tells him he shouldn't like things that other people (namely their homophobic dad) try to force him to like, that he should like what he genuinely likes. in s2 jonathan gives will the freak speech and tells him that no one normal ever accomplished anything and mentions bowie. in s3, he doesn't get a speech, (though joyce does tell him that when he falls in love he won't find it gross [avoiding the word girlfriend and leaving it neutral]) but he does face backlash from someone that IS trying to conform and IS shaming will for not letting go of "childish" things aka his interests, what's important to him, and what he wants. does will back down or shy away in shame? no. instead, he lets mike sit in his shame for having said something that hurtful, and he says "yeah. i guess i did. i really did." clearly this is a conversation about what makes will different aka his sexuality bc he goes and destroys castle byers (the safe place he and his brother built once their homophobic dad left which is a place will can be himself unapologetically) with what is likely a bat that lonnie gave him when trying to get him into baseball. he calls himself stupid and donates his dnd books, but i don't see this as an act of conformity (he tells mike as much, suggesting he'll just use his books + if he was ashamed he wouldn't have painted the party as their dnd characters and given it to him of all people lol). he felt stupid because he thought they'd always be crazy together, that they were of the same mind and heart still, and that they had the same brand of "otherness" if you catch my drift. then in s4 we get jonathan's tender "you're my brother and there is nothing absolutely nothing that will ever change that" which is the most direct anyone has ever been about that which makes will different. and he doesn't shy away from it! he doesn't deny it, because we can see from his confession and how he breaks down that he's desperately been wanting and needing to hear that. he accepts that love and allows himself to be held and seen by someone else, as he has every other time. because will doesn't hate being different, he just hates that he has to live in a world where that's seen as wrong and thus makes him feel like he doesn't belong because of it. but he doesn't change himself. he doesn't feel ashamed of it. he doesn't see it as a flaw in himself or others and he never has. will is different and he knows it and he wouldn't have it any other way.
will's story since the beginning has been about being different and going through awful things, and managing to not only find the light in it but also make it out stronger because of it all. it's always been about using what makes him different as a good thing and as something he uses to save himself and others.
will being good with a gun bought him time with whatever kidnapped him. will knowing how to run and hide kept him alive in the upside down. will acted as a spy while possessed and managed not only to save hopper but also tell them how to finish this. will's experiences and senses helped them figure out what was happening in season three. will's love and loyalty inspires mike and manages to bring him to a better place even if just for a moment in the van, and again he's the one that knows vecna's current state, aaaand had he been in hawkins at the time it likely would've gone a lot better because as dustin said "we need will".
taking something awful and turning it into a good thing and a source of strength is a wonderful trope. it's inspiring and empowering not only for the character but for those that could use that hope and reminder that there's always a silver lining, that life isn't all darkness and shadows and hurt. not only that, but it's something that they've literally always done for will since the very beginning. he is the prime character for that. his entire message has always been that it's okay to be different and that you can find strength and peace in that; that the things that make you different aren't a detriment, they're precisely what make you strong. like... i'm sorry, but have you not been paying attention at all whatsoever this entire time or... :/
#some of u heard 'sometimes it makes you feel like a mistake' and just forgot every other season ever it seems like#but idk maybe IM the outlier here lmao#characters like mike steve and eleven i can see the conformity argument for#BUT WILL?!?!?!?#will who has always drawn and listened to his music and wanted to hang out with his friends and play dnd and who#gets made fun of for so many things even by those that mean the world to him but has never ONCE tried to change#anything about who he is over that..... THAT'S who you think thinks being different is a bad thing!?!?!#will who has never lied about being a loner or what he likes or what he wants in life or has dressed like other people want him to#will who specifically has received multiple It's Okay To Be Different speeches and came out of them believing them is the character#that you think hates being different? will who loves mike's nerdy self and thinks the absolute world of him and TELLS HIM AS MUCH AND#CONFESSES HIS GAY LOVE TO DESPITE THE SUMMER OF HOMOPHOBIA AND THE AIRPORT FIASCO AND THAT DREW A#FUCKING HEART ON HIS SHIELD UNABASHEDLY AND CONFESSED IN FRONT OF TWO OTHER PEOPLE TOO ON TOP OF THAT#IN THE EIGHTIES!!!!!!! TO MIKE!!!! WHO COULDNT TOUCH HIM AND HAS A CONSERVATIVE FAMILY AND DIDNT TALK TO HIM FOR A YEAR#IS WHO YOU THINK HATES BEING DIFFERENT . HELLO#literally everything that he goes through is turned into something 'good' because that's the POINT!!!!#HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE NORMAL!!! HE IS NOT THE CHARACTER U SHOULD BE MAKING THOSE ARGUMENTS FOR LMAO#jus say u don't want him to have powers bro don't be lying on my blorbito's name like that 😭😭😭😭😭#anyway. crazed frenzy is over im normal now <3#u kno how the long and all too passionate bordering on Is This Bitch Okay mobile posts go#back to being offline now byeeeee 🏃‍♀️

It's so crazy to me that throughout season 4 they made it a point to not have Mike ask El if she's okay ever in any bad situation she goes through.
Look at the roller rink scene and following, he instead makes snarky comments instead of comforting her and then when he does you know the whole "from Mike" scene happens and he starts invalidating her feelings, when they reunite he doesn't ask if she's okay it's Will who does, during the monologue we don't know if he asked afterwards but probably not given the current theme
And I just think it's really interesting that they decided to show his constant lack of comforting El (not even just in this season) compared to how he always comforts Will
Mike is super performative in his relationship with El especially when it comes to materialistic gifts or showing that "oh my God we're dating we're gonna go kiss now" but despite how much effort he puts into that performance he never puts in any effort to actually show emotional vulnerability in their relationship nor put the care in actually being a good boyfriend to El.
Throughout every season we see Mike asking Will if he is okay even if Will has done nothing saying otherwise and he makes sure Will is okay by asking multiple times or checking up on him and such, he doesn't do that with El (he might have done it a few times in S3 I think but still not as much as with Will, wherra lot of his worry lies) he genuinely wants to make sure Will is okay at all times and make sure they're okay, like how he will fight to make sure him and Will are on good terms, how he makes sure he always gets will back in a supernatural occurrence or in one that he unfortunately made on his own.
He's adamant in finding Will yet not finding El (S1 vs S2), he goes crawling back to Will when they fight but not with El, he can confide with his best friend but he doesn't confide in his girlfriend (even when it's about their relationship problems??), He owns up to his mistakes and the things he has done with Will but literally with nobody else and etc so much more that I just won't get into
The gist is he works so much harder in his relationship with Will then he does with his own girlfriend or with any of his other friends
He fights for Will, he confides in Will, he comforts Will, he's emotionally vulnerable with Will, he admits his faults when it comes to Will, and he's just genuinely the best version of himself when he is with Will
I'm rambling and have no idea where I was going with this now, but yeah it's interesting and some of my many random thoughts

honestly i feel like if they wanted mileven to come off as an endgame couple then they wouldve had them get back together after the first apology mike made in season three during the sauna test. but nope eleven held her ground and continued to call him out even after he explained himself and cleared up the miscommunication. and idk that choice always felt really weird to me

saw my favorite bylers talk about the relationship between Mike and Joyce again and now i just can't stop thinking about it
not just if she saw the airport fiasco but what if she saw the conflict between willelmike
or after they're all finally in hawkins again maybe she saw there's something going on and asked Jonathan and he told her some things he knew he could let her know
and then she comes to Mike and he expects it. he expects her to be angry to start criticising him cause he fucked up and hurts everyone and he knew this was coming but god does it hurt. this is the woman that feels like a second mother to him the woman that sometimes feels more like a mother to him then his actual mom and he knows being criticised by her is going to be the last straw and a part of him is dreading this but a part of him also thinks he deserves this. of course he does he fucked up he's the bad guy he hurt people he hurt her children she loves more than anything of course he deserves this
so he can take it. it will hurt. it will be like a punch in the face but he can take it it's what happens after that's the real question
but Joyce just smiles at him so gently and asks if he's doing okay. if everything is alright if something is going on. she tells him she cares about him and she knows he's been through a lot but if he needs her she's here for him. if he needs to talk she will listen if he just needs someone to be there for him she will be and she's just so caring and gentle and loving to Mike and Mike just. fucking. breaks.
he doesn't even remember when was the last time someone treated him this way like his feelings matter like he matters and he just can't help it. someone finally sees more than his snarkiness. someone finally sees more than him being a jerk. someone finally sees there's something more going on. someone finally sees the pain behind it and cares enough to actually ask him of he's okay and so he just lets himself cry in front of someone for the first time in years
#byler#mike wheeler#joyce byers#mike and joyce#my favorite mother and future son in law relationship to think about#i love to think about Mike seeing Joyce as his second mother and Joyce seeing Mike as if he's her own son#like god this is the kid she saw grow up since he was like 5 this is the boy that made her son so much happier#and i bet she never invalidated his feelings or anything because Joyce would never#and Mike just feeling safe around her and Joyce being one of the few people who never see him as the bad guy because that's Mike#and she only sees him as the kind boy who is always so caring and gentle with her Will#and of course she wants to make sure he's okay and that he knows she's there for him#and how much that must mean to Mike his parents never show interest they always invalidate his feelings and never ask if he's doing okay#they never make him feel safe like he can talk to them but Joyce god she's the exact opposite#she always just shows him care and never makes him feel wrong for just being himself and i'm sobbing now#where is my own Joyce to adopt me please#Also about Jonathan telling Joyce some things no he totally wouldn't out Will or anything#he would say what he knew he could but he doesn't know much about the situation himself#and Joyce totally already knows about Will so it would probably look like#Joyce: i see there's some tension between Mike El and Will is everything alright?#Jonathan: we had to listen to Mike's shitty unhonest love confession to El and it was so bad it got Max killed :/#Joyce:😰#anyways sorry for rambling i just have many thoughts about this#blue's 'Mike's extreme defender' ramblings

just here to say again that gay people can and very often do experience “crushes” on people of different genders, particularly when they’re young and don’t understand the difference between romantic and platonic love, and that doesn’t make them any less gay
stranger things has done a fucking phenomenal job of displaying this through mike wheeler, whose entire romantic arc has been about discovering what that difference is, specifically through his two major relationships, will and el. he mistakes the platonic feelings for romantic ones and the romantic feelings for platonic ones before (VERY gradually imo) realizing that he’s had them mixed up the entire time

vanessa headcanons / portrayal notes but i'm too lazy to make her headcanon banner or even write coherent thoughts so you just get a bullet point list:
definitely a reluctant follower but as things progress she gets more. . . attached might be a strong word, but she stops hating glitch so much. this does not last once she escapes him obv
like it's literally: oh funny rabbit guy but this is a glitch i need to figure out -> okay i hate his vibe -> get out of my head i hate you -> i might as well learn to live with you -> i've completely isolated myself from all friends except you so i guess that makes you. . . almost a friend -> post-game deeply traumatizing by the violating of like. literally having her autonomy taken away from her
still carries deep guilt and resentment for the murders during moments where she's fighting back / he's not in control at all
vanessa is the only fucking character in fn.af who would genuinely seek therapy after every thing and i think she should get an award for that
researches the franchise + william af.ton in a lot of detail when The Hell Begins and is horrified but also has to deal with glitch being very fond of his very dead creator
basically, not in the suit: glitch is like an annoying little voice in her head who she has to stop herself from arguing out loud with in the supermarket
in the suit: he's like. not Literally in control but heavily, heavily, heavily influences her thoughts and actions. can make her think almost anything is the right decision
( okay it's not as simple as "in the suit" and "out of the suit," but you catch my drift. she can absolutely "come out of it" while wearing the suit, and she can def be under his control while not )
i said it before but: scene girl in high school. like, she has rainbow extensions when not under glitch's control, of course she was a scene girl
genuinely loves the glamr.ocks, despite everything
generally i don't want to go with her owning / being in complete charge of the pizza.plex because that's silly to me, but i don't have an alternative, esp because like who would it be??? i just shrug.
genuinely concerned abt gregory or any other kid who gets in, esp because she Knows What's Going On. she literally knows that she's a threat herself.
favorite animals? cats and horses
took the help wa.nted job because, like. she needed the money + she's absolutely a gamer so it seemed fun. especially because she had never played VR before
doesn't have a favorite color and will argue if you try to get her to pick. definitely enjoys bright colors, though
absolutely thought fazb.ear entertainment was full of shit from the start, but she wasn't actually that familiar with the history, so
literally will adopt gregory post-game. tries to act kind of like a big sister but never had any siblings so she's incredibly lost fdhskfashfjdlsah
introvert, but enjoys having a small, close group of friends. she ghosts them during the glitch stuff, but the ones that matter are there for her when she gets back ( and def understand when she. . . kinda explains what was going on )
although "i adopted a kid" "you w h a t " FDHFKDSHJFHS
has absolutely nothing to do with her parents, for valid reasons
completely traumatized post-game to the point that she questions whether her own thoughts are "really" hers. she seriously doubts her own sanity at times, is often scared she didn't "actually" get rid of glitch, and questions her ability ( and worthiness, given her actions under brainwashing ) to take care of herself, much less gregory
like i mention on her page, i'm open to writing any ending and don't treat one as canon on this blog. however, it should be noted that i'm not a fan of the burnt.rap ending ( fully biased by the fact that i don't like burnt.rap's existence ). that's not to say i'm not willing to write it, but i'm prob not interested in writing directly with burnt.rap himself
as also mentioned on her page, she's a lesbian, so there won't be any shipping with her and glitch or william ( or any man lmao ). if glitch still wants to be weird, that's on him, but she won't be receptive period.
loves creative stuff!! is an artist ( esp with pencils or digital, but can paint a bit ), enjoys decorating her apartment, and adores dressing up in pretty clothes!
also genuinely enjoys programming. yes, it is soured for her post-game.
will self-sabotage herself even pre-game ( eating nothing but takeout, not getting outside enough, isolating, etc ). therapy helps post-game.

Before the cops came, me and El, we had a bad fight. We never fight. I mean, we fought before, but just, like, silly fights, stupid fights. But, I don’t know, this one just felt more adult. Like, it just felt more real. Like, a fight you can’t come back from.

I think the reason a lot of people don’t like the direction Stranger Things has gone is that to me it feels like a show that always intended to tell a sweet story with nice endings.
And then ask the question “what happens when you don’t end”. To me, Stranger Things peeled back the curtain and didn’t take the easy out of saying “happily ever after” about unsustainable things like a rule to not lie - that’s gonna complicate things down the road. And they decided to show that.
They showed plausibly happy endings so long as you don’t question them - because often people don’t. They showed happy endings that are only happy endings within the bounds of the story. But then they said “No. These people kept existing after we ‘closed that book’. And their lives got messy.”
The Snow Ball was the ending a lot of people wanted. But this show was never intended to be that simple. Because people and life, let alone the situation at hand, is not that simple. You ended up together. Or you’re safe from the monsters now. But what happens when you still don’t know how to be independent even if your new dependency is a safe person now, at least. What happens when you’re safe from the monsters but you still have the trauma.
What happens when everything doesn’t go perfectly back to the way it was and children engage conflict because trauma has ugly symptoms that, yes, sometimes cause assumptions and miscommunications and LACK of communication and fights.
What happens when you get your fairytale ending that would have been perfect if you hadn’t had to go through what you did and become a different person to get it.
I’ve said this once before. This isn’t a fairytale. It’s a hero’s journey. These kids didn’t fight so hard then get the relief of returning to normal. They took on great responsibility and they’ll never be the same.
But I do understand wanting the expected satisfaction. And I do understand the lack of trust in the time between the anticipated happy ending and the real closure. This ending will be good; I believe that. It’ll just solve more nuanced issues by acknowledging them first and therefore taking longer. But distrusting tv is fair and so is seeing this and assuming that they had a happy ending and duped for a cash grab of extending conflict. But I don’t think it was an extension. I think it was a fakeout.
