Fanfiction Year in Review 2023
I fill this out every year. It’s become a bit of a tradition for me. Allows me to reflect on everything that I’ve written and kinda think about where I want to go next. And I like it better from the ask games because I don’t have to wait for asks to come in and can compare my answers from one year to the next. ^_^
1 List of fics completed this year in the order they were finished:
Displaced (Ladrien oneshot)
No Regrets (Ladynoir oneshot - smut)
You Don’t Have To Pretend With Me (Platonic Adrino oneshot)
Representation Reveal (S5 Adrinette oneshot)
Kisses in the Rain (S5 AU Love Square - technically multichapter, but it’s shorter than many of my one-shots)
Would Trust You With Everything (Adrino multichapter)
Just An Ordinary Girl (Marichat oneshot)
Love Remains (Ladynoir multichapter)
Spin the Bottle (OT4 with cour four - technically oneshot, but it’s longer than Kisses and has more kisses in it. Haha!)
2 Number of words written:
Written: 166,114 words
Published: 151,018 words (more than twice 2022’s number!! Go me!!)
Those numbers are incredibly close together because I haven’t been redrafting as much. Those numbers include six one shots, three completed multi chapters. And another four multi chapter WIPs saw at least one update.
And in another fun milestone! I broke a million words published on Ao3 just this last week!! (I've been writing fic since 2003 and everything I've ever written is on Ao3!)
3 Your most popular fic:
Not Part of the Plan - I suspect that this is mostly because being a teen pregnancy fic, it’s my most tropiest story this year. Haha!
4 Your personal fav:
Aftermath - This story has usurped Right Behind You as my favorite. I’ve been able to connect to the raw hurt and grief in this story, and there’s something very raw and human about it that others seem to be able to connect to as well. I think it’s some of my best work, and that is also thanks to an amazing beta in @ladyofthenoodle who has lent her expertise in more than one way in making this one more true to lived experience.
5 Your fav scene:
It’s so hard to pick a favorite!! I narrowed it down to my three favorites in no particular order.
The last scene in Ch 5 Love Remains - Chat Noir give amnesiac Ladybug a geography lesson from space. It’s got Whole New World vibes, and I just loved the imagery of it.
Ch 4 of Aftermath - I’m particularly proud of Marinette’s panic attack when Adrien tells her she doesn’t have to keep coming over. Like it feels like it comes out of nowhere, but it just totally makes sense. And how it manifests and how she soothes herself (it’s not healthy, but it’s so GOOD!)
Ch 7 of Would Trust You With Everything - The scene where Chat Noir tries to tell Nino who he is, but inevitably doesn’t. And how Nino reassures him through all that. This scene feels so raw, but so heartwarming in light of Adrien’s fears. And I don’t know - it’s beautiful to me.
6 A fic or scene that challenged you:
I really struggled with Right Behind You this year, though it wasn’t for lack of trying! I had started out the year hoping to go back to an update a month here and I only updated it three times throughout 2023.
This was incredibly frustrating because the initial drafts of scenes would come pretty easily, but I couldn’t seem to make them pop the way the earlier chapters did. The good news is I think I figured out what the issue was. Most of my writing this year has been speed writing. And a big part of that is just where I’ve been emotionally. I’m very very out of practice in editing and redrafting, which this story and Aftermath both definitely need.
I’ve only been able to edit Aftermath because I’ve had a ton of help. (Thanks Noodles!) Sadly, it’s harder to find betas for rarepairs, but I have succeeded! (Thanks@coffeebanana!)
7 A line of writing you’re proud of:
“She wanted to be there to see it. To see him.”
This line is way better in context, but I’ve made myself cry about three times with it. And I refuse to explain it because that would give its power away. Guess you’ll just have to go read Aftermath.
8 A comment that touched you:
I can never answer this question without mentioning several!!
Would Trust You With Everything - this story had a ton of enthusiastic followers - way more than rarepair work usually gets, and I wrote this story right after my life fell apart and all the commenters here made throwing this story together just that much more joyful during a time when I REALLY needed it. (I'm looking at you, @bittersweetresilience, @bbutterflies @flightfoot @coffeebanana and so many others that I don't know your tumblr name!!!) Not Part of the Plan Comments - I added sex ed lessons to the end of each chapter here because there’s so much about fertility and pregnancy that people don’t know if typical pregnancy fics are anything to go by, and this seemed to inspire so many people to share their pregnancy stories!!! And these have been so cool because I’ve learned that these stories just don’t often have an opportunity to be shared. And it’s neat that this story with its accompanying lessons could create a space for that!! Aftermath comments - lots of people who have really struggled with moderate to severe depression have apparently felt very seen by this fic. And that a story that is essentially about two characters who feel very alone and like no one can understand can help people feel LESS alone and MORE understood is simply amazing!! I love this story so much!! AHH!! Here's one from @neurovascular-entrapta that meant a lot to me.
9 Something that inspired your writing:
Grief and the need to feel things in a distant abstract-these-are-story-book-characters kind of way so I don’t have to feel my actual feelings as closely every moment of the day really kept me writing the whole year long.
10 Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc):
My writing has been really raw and messy this year, and I can’t keep tenses straight to save my life. But there’s something powerful about the rawness that I really like even as all the grammatical errors and the lack of effort on the technical side of most of my stories has driven me nuts.
I am proud of myself for being able to get back into the big projects in these last few months after not being able to face them from April to October. And I’ve started participating in a few writing events here and there again in addition to working on my own pet projects.
11 Do you have any writing goals for the next year?
Well, I wanted to finish Not Part of the Plan in 2023, which didn’t happen only barely! So hoping the last chapter and the epilogue make it out within the next month. Once that’s done I think I want to try and make Aftermath and Right Behind You my primary focus projects this year. And of course, I’m sure new plot bunnies and writing events will take over my brain on occasion. Last year, I said I wanted my writing to become a reliable mental health tool for me again, and I’m glad to say that it definitely was that for 2023. I hope I’m able to use my writing this year to continue my healing journey.
And maybe go and proofread all of the fics I finished in 2023 to fix all the inconsistent tense issues to prepare them for being bound eventually!
12 Anyone you would like to thank?
SO MANY PEOPLE!
@jennagrinsoverml for being one of my oldest fandom friends! For becoming a real life friend for all that we haven't actually met in person. For all the times you vented to me and listened and sent me pictures of your family and gushed over pictures of mine. I'm lucky to know you!
@ladyofthenoodle - for showing up in my DMs, For being a most insightful beta, for dragging me into a larger community over and over again, for listening to both my real struggles and my first world problems, for being my friend!!
@thelibraryloser - I don't know how to put this into words. But I very much look up to you. For your resilience through difficult times - you are role-model for how to handle this world with grace and kindness. Thank you for your stories!
@coffeebanana - for being so enthusiastic in the creation process before and after! When I have a story that is getting no attention one comment from you makes it so it doesn't matter. You give me all I need.
@bittersweetresilience and @wackus-bonkus-maximus for just being so kind and enthusiastic and supportive of any idea I happen to be talking about in any given moment. I guess for enabling me. Haha!
@blur0se and @mila-beedoodling for sharing your ideas and inspiring me to create new things!!
@asukiess, @chocoluckchipz, @sariahsue, @miabrown007 for creating so many beautiful things and for being kind and engaging in so many conversations!
And now, I'm really nervous that I'm forgetting someone because this is the first time where I feel like I've had more than three fandom friends. Haha! It's a good problem to have I suppose. In general, thank you to the miraculous community for helping me to survive this year. <3 <3 <3
Happy New Year Everyone!!
I invite anyone who wants to, to fill this out! (Or something similar because I think it can be modified for artwork pretty easily). But if you do, please tag me, so I can be a cheerleader for all you've accomplished this year!

So, I've had some time to sit with Gang of Secrets, and I know everyone in the fandom probably has their feelings about Alya finding out first, especially two episodes after she just told Luka she can't tell him, but let me tell you why Alya is the most obvious and best choice.
First of all, it's a commonly used trope in shows with secret identities that the hero's best friend finds out their identity first. Lots of other shows, comics, and books have done it, if fact early concepts for ML had Alya knowing from the beginning, so it's not really surprising that Marinette confided in her first. Alya was the first hero that Marinette picked, she is her best friend, she is arguably the person Marinette trusts most (save Chat Noir who we will talk about later). Marinette telling Alya makes sense whether you like it or not because of the role that Alya plays in the grand scheme of the story.
All stories utilize tropes. They're not a bad thing. Some of them are overdone, sure, but it's more about how you use them that matters. Most stories follow a certain formula so viewers/readers know what to expect, and yes, even stories with big twists follow the same structure. Telling the best friend from a storytelling perspective makes sense. Telling the alternate love interest who isn't crucial to the story doesn't.
Take off your shipping goggles for a second and look at things from a storytelling perspective. Remove everyone's names and forget how you feel about them, and just look at the character roles. You have a protagonist, a main love interest, a best friend, and a temporary side love interest. Who does the protagonist trust most in this circle in a normal story? Who learns the secret first? Writing is a balancing act. You have to choose which characters to develop wisely, and I'm not going to argue that ML is a golden standard of storytelling and writing. It's not. But telling a secondary love interest in this case would add a more important role to a character who really wasn't designed for that. That doesn't mean they can't still develop that character in other ways, but for a plot point of this caliber, the best friend takes priority over the love interests. Both of them. Because while the love interest can be a friend, a confidant, a shoulder to lean on, their primary function to the protagonist is romance. Meanwhile, a best friend can be all of those things and more. The best friend can be whatever the protagonist needs in the moment.
Now, let's look more closely at this specific situation. Marinette was spiralling. She couldn't keep up with both of her lives, and the stress was literally eating her alive. She just decided that she can't be in love with either of the boys she likes because she would always be keeping a secret from them. She was heartbroken, stressed, and exhausted. Yes, Chat Noir attempted to be there for her and support her as best he could, but the problem here is the role Chat Noir is playing. He is for lack of better terms, the superhero sidekick, but also still the love interest. (Even if LB doesn't know it) And in this case too, she knows Chat Noir is in love with her, and for a girl who has recently decided that love is off the table, you can see why she didn't want to confide in him. Would he have understood her stress if she told him? Sure. But revealing their identities to each other now would have been detrimental to Marinette, and here is why:
Marinette gave up on love for the time being. We, the audience, know that Chat Noir is Adrien, the boy she loves. For her to say, I can't be in love right now, only to turn around and find out that the person she was confiding in and leaning on for support was, in fact, her love interest, it would have made her spiral even worse. No where would have been safe for her. And you can argue what a good bean Adrien is, and whatever, that's not the point here.
Marinette takes her job as Ladybug very seriously. The reason she is so stressed is because now with the added responsibility of being the guardian, she risks losing not only her Miraculous, but also the entire Miracle Box. That's a lot of power in the wrong hands, and she knows that quite well. This caused her to lean on the side of hypervigilance. She was always transformed and looking for trouble because she was paranoid that she was going to miss something and fail again. With so much changing on the superhero side of her life, she needed an anchor back to her civilian life. So that's where Alya comes in.
Alya provides her with a sense of normalcy, a reminder that she has a life outside of the mask. She grounds her to her civilian life and provides her with support she needs to juggle her superhero life. (And yes, she still does this even if you hate her) On the opposite end of that spectrum, Chat Noir grounds her to her superhero life, and so much had changed for her on the superhero side of things with the introduction of her guardian duties that revealing her identity to Chat would have just been one more change to that part of her life with nothing to fall back on. By keeping their identities in place and giving her an anchor in her regular life, Marinette can find better balance between the two. Her secrets with Chat Noir are a constant, or a "normal" that she can use to ground herself. She is used to them, she expects them, it's part of her schema for her superhero life. She shows up, her goofy partner cracks some jokes, they beat up the bad guy, they go home. Chat Noir is playing his role perfectly in this sense. He offered to be there for her, but he wasn't who she needed at the time. The scale had tipped too far in her super life, so she needed something to tip it back toward her civilian life. So, we got Alya. Which makes logical sense given her role in the story. It's the role she was born to play. Whether you like it or not.
I know all the shippers are thirsty for content, trust me, I am adrinette trash, and I want the children to kiss each other on the face just as much as the next shipper. But I fundamentally understand why that can't happen right now in canon. And that's why fanfiction exists. I can make them kiss whenever I want. I can make them reveal whenever I want. I can write as many reveals as I want. Canon can only do it once, and idk about you guys, but I'd like their eventual reveal to be for a better reason than "I'm spiralling out of control please help." I'd also prefer for it not to be in a random ass episode in the middle of the season. I want it to have its moment. I want it to slap me and take my wallet, so I can tell it thank you. I want the reveal to be that bitch. Doing it here would have been cheap, and it would have cheapened the rest of the season for me. Now, if they wanna do it in the s4 finale when shit is getting lit? Sign me up. But right now, it wasn't the right call. And that's fine.

"Miraculous season 3 ep 26: Miracle Queen" reaction
Ok, there is really too mucg to be said.
This episode made me cry more than the last one, if that's possible.
Anyway, it's late and I'm tired because I've studied all day, and this episode took all my energy away.
So, there are soo many point... I think it will take a lot. This is not the Miraculous we all knew. This is a new, beautiful thing full of angst.
I need fanfictions.
Anywya, let's start.
1) Kagami and Adrien
I've chosen to talk about them first so then i can go ahead and forget about this.
And here, let's consider two different cases:
Objectively: Kagami never had friends, she just started hang out with them and actually she has only Adrien and Marinette, and for the first she developed feelings that go over simple friendship. Yes, she said that love is more important than friendship for her, and she acted like a bit-
But, we have to consider that she has never had people of her same age if not to fight.
In the other hand... SHE IS THE WORST PERSON EVER. I MEAN, WHO IN THE HELL SAY THAT LOVE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FRIENDSHIP EVEN IF HE IS A FOOL WHO NEVER HAD... EVEN IF IT IS CHLOE.
OMG WHEN SHE SAID THAT AND SHE ACTED LIKE THAT WITH ADRIEN, THROWING HER HAND AT HIM!!!!!! MMMHHHH, THIS FUCKED BITCH.
But I think that this "relationship" will help Adrien waking up because everyone in this episode understood that he his SO MUCH CONFUSED AND TIRED THAT I'M conflicted... I love Adrien and god, that poor baby got rejected so many times from Ladybug, but how can he be SO confused? Didn't he love Ladybug? Is he giving her up? Why is he trying with... with the ice queen (Mari named her this)?
2) Luka and Marinette
Ahhhhh these two. They deserves the entire world!!!
Luka is a wonderful boy, because even if he fall in love with Marinette, he's okay with staying near her like just a friend.
He is there to comfort her when she cried, knowing it was because of Adrien. And he is even Adrien's friend. Luka never blamed him or Marinette, and even if his feelings are strong, she always come first for him.
He is amazing because when she was hurt, he didn't try to take a step forward, he just stayed there, hugging her.
Not like Kagami, who see Adrien confused and try to persuade him anyway.
And Mari... well, after I've seen her cry in the last episode, I can't stop thinking about what she said, about having too many responsibilities, not beeing able to be herself.
Beeing Ladybug is not only a positive thing, and she can't even talk about it with her friends. Especially now, that Master Fu lost his memories, she'll have to count only on Tikki.
This will be so much stressful for her.
Anyway, even if right now I want the both of them to be happy, I'll never stop shipping Marinette x Adrien because they are perfect for each other.
3) LadyNoir
Well, their relationship is a bit cracked right now because of that... that shitty little brat and many other things.
Chat Noir is spacing out from her because he is hurt, confused and wgatever, and she noticed it. She got jealous, cause yeah, that was jealousy, over him not calling her My Lady (OMG they are so DUMB) and flirting with... Ryuko?
Well, her name is not important right now (and it will never be).
But she has noticed it and tryed to understand why. At the end, nothing was clarified.
In this episode, Ladybug and Chat Noir had one of the most beautiful moment until now.
Because really, this is SO much going on here.
This is a totally wholehearted and beautiful hug. So beautiful that it makes me cry.
Behind everything, they trust each other, they are a team, they love each other unknowingly - and they'll laugh/cry so hard when they'll find out each other's identity - and this scene makes you understand all that.
They don't have to love each other - but they'll do - to be in sync, they are perfect, you can absolutely see that fron the FIRST episode of the FIRST season.
They don't need words, they complete each other and they'd do everything to make the other happy.
Why are they so dumb???? 😭
4) Papillion and Mayura
Who is Emilie?
Okay no, I'm just joking. But how can you not ship these two after everything? The way Mayura passed out between Papi's arms! I've laughed so hard at that.
When I see them, miraculous become a drama.
"Gabriel, I'm ready."
"Are you sure, Nathalie?"
"Never been so sure. I'd do anything for you, my love."
"What?"
"What?"
Ok no, seriously, I ship them, but I need Emilie back, because Gabriel will just keep friendzoning her.
5) Master Fu and Ladybug (guardians)
Ok, I know that I said I have cryed in every sentence of this post, but gosh, who didn't cry when Master Fu gave up is power as guardian to not reveal Ladybug and Chat Noir's identity?
He made many mistakes and WE know it, he is possibly the reason why Emilie got hurt or whatever so that Gabriel used the Miraculous of the Butterfly.
But, let's just say, that with this, he proved the affection he feel towards Marinette and Adrien.
He lost his memories to save them, to protect them.
And Marinette is now the new guardian!! I'm so happy!!
And about this: that thing in which there are all the miraculous, is she going to hide it in her room? Because, well, good luck.
6) Chloe and Papi
I hate both of them.
Chloe disappointed me so much, you can say she had her reason, she was unhappy, Ladybug's attitude towards her didn't help, but she betrayed her anyway.
Ladybug gave HER the possibility to change things, to prove herself, she trusted her more than a time, but she left her side to go to Papillion's (that I'll just call papi).
Papi is mean, so freaking mean. He is a really good antagonist.
Who else would be ready to sacrifice all Paris and ignore his only family member left, to save his wife?
I know he is suffering... but does he know that if he use ladybug and chat noir's miraculous to save Emilie, he will end up losing someone near him? Or maybe not, but I highly doubt that.
And I bet that this someone will be Adrien.
7) Adrinette
After this episode, I saw everyone comment videos with the same words "Lukanette is gone".
And I'm totally against it.
This is the perfect final no one wanted because it hurted too much, but it is perfect to give a new start point.
Marinette fall in love with Adrien because he gave her an umbrella to excuse himself, and she understood he is sweet, caring, kind, selfless and blah. But WE know that Adrien, the Adrien we and she see in every or so episode, isn't totally the real one. Because if he was, then who is Chat?
Chat is someone nearer its true self than Adrien, because with that mask, he feels free to do and act as he pleases without being constantly judged.
Even if he has the worst villain father, he tryes to not disappoint him.
Same goes for Adrien: he fall in love with Ladybug because he saw how beautiful, strong, bold and badass she was. But she isn't always like that. She is clumsy and she can't even talk with her crush because she gets flushed, awkward and begins to stutter.
He doesn't even know her that well, so its just good if he starts to know Marinette a bit better.
If it didn't end up like this, with the wonderful Luka and the shitty little bitch, they'd have kept loving just a part of the other self.
We have to be patient (like the song "The Wall Between Us", that I know they published now for this. Astruc likes to play with our hearts.) and wait until they love each other entirely.
They'll have to show us things like "Marinette or Ladybug?" And "Adrien or Chat Noir?" Or I won't be happy.
Just kidding.
So, my friends, let's not forget that Adrien and Marinette, just like Ladybug and Chat Noir, are meant to be together.

Adrinette April 2019
I’m taking part! I’m going to try to post each day. Setting a goal for myself. I’m going to try to post in order if I can. I’m going to post here first, as early in the day as I can. Then in the evening I will also post to my fanfiction and AO3 accounts. So let’s get started!!! (My daughter is the artist and I think i’m going to have to get a smaller rez version.)
Day 1 - Just friends.
Adrien sat on a bench in the park and watched Marinette chase Alya around, trying to get her phone to erase a picture Alya had taken. Nino, sitting beside him, let out a chuckle.
“That is just too dang cute,” Nino commented as Alya was just standing there holding her phone really high in her hand while Marinette jumped trying to reach it. Both boys chuckled.
Adrien felt happy right then. Here he was, sitting with people that he knows care about him. The 4 of them had grown close over the past 3 years.
Nino was the best bud he could ever ask for. Alya was brash and pulled him into her escapades whether he wanted to go along or not. Marinette would always at least try to keep Alya on track and make sure everyone was having fun.
Alya caught his interest again as she squealed when Marinette got close to grabbing the phone, almost toppling them both over.
“Oops, just missed,” Alya yelled as she pulled away from Marinette and let the poor girl stumble, getting close to falling on the ground. Marinette saved herself at the last moment and righted herself as Alya started to run over to the playground. Marinette gave chase, both yelling and squealing as they ran around.
Alya suddenly darted away from Marinette and started running around the boys on the bench.
“Alya, please erase it! I look horrible!” Marinette pleaded while running after Alya.
“Only if you get it girl,” Alya taunted back.
As Marinette rounded the bench in front of Nino she tripped on his slightly stuck out foot. She fell forward and landed across Adrien. Both of them were shocked for a moment. “Mari, are you alright?” Nino asked.
Marinette started to babble, “Yes, yes, it's ok, Adrien's ok, I'm ok!” she blurted out as she tried to push herself off Adrien. All she succeeded to do though was push against Adrien's shoulder too hard and topple them both from the bench. They lay on the ground, arms and legs tangled. Adrien felt a small blush creep across his cheeks while he noted that Marinette went a bright pink.
Alya and Nino burst out laughing.
“Oh, I gotta get this,” Alya said as she quickly took a picture. Nino was about to take one himself when his phone rang.
He stepped away from them to take the call. Alya helped a blushing Marinette up, then a grinning Adrien up.
Nino turned back to them. “That was my dad, Chris's group is getting let out early and he needs me to go get him and take him home. Alya, want to come with me?” he asked.
“If Mari doesn't mind?” She glanced over and Marinette shook her head. “Sure, we can play some video games too. Chris likes that dancing one we do, right?”
Nino nodded. Alya grabbed Nino's arm and waved bye to Marinette and Adrien. Saying she'd text Marinette later.
“W-well,” Marinette stammered. “I guess we should go too?”
“Sure,” Adrien said. “I actually managed to convince my father that I needed an afternoon off and that's how I have the whole of today free. Told him that I was feeling a little tired and I need a mental break as we had just finished up some big projects at school. I was a little surprised that he let me take the whole day off.”
Marinette was glad. She knew it was her's and the others influence that Adrien was finally standing up to the ridiculous schedule his father imposed on him.
Marinette grabbed her purse from under the bench and motioned to Adrien to follow her. “We could go back to my place and play some video games too, if you want to that is, unless you want to go somewhere else. We could go to a movie or window shopping. We could even go to a museum or the zoo...” She was starting to babble again. She trailed off, wishing that she could keep it under control.
Adrien chuckled, “Video games at your place sounds fine. Could we get some treats from your parents while we play?” He asked as his eyes lit up. He guided her out of the park and towards her home above the bakery.
Marinette stuck out her tongue, “Like they wouldn’t insist anyway.” She rubbed the back of her head with one hand. They walked towards her home, each in comfortable silence.
Adrien liked that over the years Marinette had managed to open up towards him. He had originally thought that the gum incident all those years ago might have ruined any chance they had at becoming friends. It turned out that it really wasn't a problem and after years of hanging out together the stammering and panicked movements that she always used to do started to disappear.
They had managed to spend lots of time together on their own or with Alya and Nino. He felt close to her. She had told him in detail about her dreams of being a designer, showed him lots of outfits she drew. He even got to help her with a jacket she wanted to create. When he saw how good it had come out he had encouraged her to enter it into a fashion competition. It wasn't one of his fathers, but he encouraged her to enter those too. She won many of them and he was glad that he was there to help her celebrate every win, and offer support for those she did loose. He wanted to be there for her with whatever life threw her way.
Marinette had been thinking the same types of thoughts as they walked back to her place. That first year she wouldn't have even been able to ask him over, let alone actually think of asking. As they got to know each other she realized that she had put him on a little bit of a celebrity pedestal. She still loved him, but it had mellowed to a steady flame.
He had finally told her about his feelings towards his father a little bit. She didn't think she knew all of it but she could better understand why he tried to please him so much sometimes. Knowing that he was just as human as her is what had dulled the intensity of her love for him. While she still wanted to be more to him, she was happy just being there to support him when his schedule took a lot out of him, mentally or physically.
They got back to the bakery and let her folks know that they were going to play video games in her room. Sabine loaded up a plate of cookies, croissants, that cheese bread Adrien seemed to like, and other pastries and watched them go upstairs.
Tom and Sabine looked wistfully between each other, each wondering when they were going to become more than 'Just Friends.'
I hope you enjoyed! Please let me know if there are any other tags I should use with this.

A Student Seating Shipping Planning Session
read on ao3
summary: in which miss bustier is a shipper who just wants her otp to be canon, and she’s willing to recruit her colleagues to do it.
word count: 1311
a/n: this is the first fanfic i wrote from over a year ago, so i figure it should be the first that i post on here too. just a warning, it’s not meant to be realistic, and the genre leans heavily toward crack. hope you enjoy!!
“Welcome to the first student seating planning session of the school year,” Miss Bustier announces cheerfully as the screen behind her illuminates in a full-screen presentation. “Let us begin!”
Ms. Mendeleiev and Mr. D'Argencourt stare back at her with blank faces. Miss Bustier guesses they’re a bit upset that she called them for a teacher meeting so early in the morning.
Mr. D’Argencourt slowly raises a hand. “Excuse me, but why am I here for this?”
“Essentially,” Ms. Bustier starts, “I know that all of us have been taking our student... pairings into strong consideration for a few months, and I know it's not necessarily in our job descriptions, but we need to talk about our students.”
Ms. Mendeleiev takes this pause as a cue to slam her fists on the table. “These teenagers have too many personal problems and absolutely no regard for lab safety. No respect for their educators! Just this last Wednesday, I found Alya Césaire blogging during my lecture. Blogging! Those uncultivated 21st century children... and don't even get me started on Alix and Kim, always betting in my class! Caline, you've had the same issues, correct?”
But Miss Bustier is already far gone, plotting ways to make DJWifi a reality.
“Caline!”
Miss Bustier snaps out of her reverie and realizes that she still needs to start the meeting. “Sorry. Yes. The shipping fates of our students are a matter to all of us, so I think we should start with the first topic. First, you two are strong student shippers, correct?”
Silence.
“I'm sorry, shippers?” Mr. D'Argencourt asks.
Miss Bustier gapes at her coworkers' ignorance. “People who ship.”
This time, Ms. Mendeleiev jumps in, continuing her rant from earlier. “Those pesky kids still have no regard for lab safety and listen to that sickening music during my class—”
Miss Bustier sighs, wondering why she even bothered with this. “Shipping. Ships. Pairing students.”
Mr. D'Argencourt strokes his mustache with the tip of his fencing epee (which he had brought to the meeting despite multiple glares of disapproval). There’s a pregnant pause as Miss Bustier waits for him to catch up.
"I still do not see... ”
As a last resort, Miss Bustier swipes the remote from the table. She absent-mindedly flips through the presentation slides, scrolling past the seating charts of every class in the school. She stops on one particular class with too many ships for its own good and draws a line with her finger, linking the yearbook photos of a sweet pigtailed girl and a blond boy with green eyes.
“Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste,” she says. “This is a ship.”
The recognition on Ms. Mendeleiev and Mr. D'Argencourt's faces is instant.
“Those two!” Ms. Mendeleiev shrieks, and Miss Bustier swears that the dogs across the street start to bark at the sound. “Always late for everything and going to the bathroom just when I'm about to reach the climax of my lecture! The ungrateful hooligans—”
"My star fencing student!” Mr. D'Argencourt jumps at the same time. “And... some other girl.” He tilts his head so that it rests on the epee's handle. “They may make a good couple.”
Miss Bustier feels like crying tears of joy. At least the PE teacher isn't a lost cause.
“Yes, yes, Armand! Look, they're right here—”
Miss Bustier trips over her words as she flips through the rest of her slides, finding one that she snapped in literature class last week. Adrien is sitting in his usual seat, diligently scribbling at his desk. Behind him, Marinette is gazing longingly at the back of his head. While Miss Bustier supposes that she should have reprimanded Marinette for daydreaming in class, it was such a golden ship moment that she couldn't disturb the peace.
"This is Adrinette,” Miss Bustier explains. “Marinette has a hopeless crush on Adrien—the entire school can confirm it—and from this picture that I took from the courtyard window, he likes her back at least a little.
“This is Adrien writing some sort of letter—a confession letter, maybe?—in class on Valentine's Day, and this is Marinette falling onto him on the school's front steps. She's a little clumsy, but I think Adrien finds it endearing. My point is that it’s our responsibility as teachers to advance this ship to its full potential, and—”
Miss Bustier has Ms. Mendeleiev's interest now. “So, Caline, you're proposing that if we move around the seating so that Marinette and Adrien are together, Miss Dupain-Cheng will be motivated to come on-time to class to see Mr. Agreste? And my teaching will be interrupted less often?”
“Well, I guess that would be a bonus, but we should have them sit next to each other to let Adrien realize his feelings for Marinette and fulfill one of many ships in the class.”
There's silence once more.
“Many? So there are other... ships?” Mr. D'Argencourt twirls his epee in one hand, and Miss Bustier resists the urge to confiscate it.
Focus on the ships. Focus on the ships.
“Yes, of course. Let me draw them out.”
Miss Bustier flips back to the seating charts and begins to connect the pictures.
"Here, you have Alya and Nino, DJWifi. Alya manages the Ladyblog and Nino is an aspiring DJ and filmmaker—you can see how they would help each other out in the future and be a media-savvy power couple, and they both even wear glasses—”
Ms. Mendeleiev stares.
"—and over here there's Alix and Kim, who sit diagonal, or alternately Kim and Max, which is a pretty good ship too, except Kim apparently liked Chloé back in February, which we can hope he got over, since that would invalidate both of the possible ships, and then right behind them there's Juleka and Rose—also a bit of a problem since Rose has shown clear interest in Ali, but she’d better get over it because Julerose is so cute—and, oh, Mylène and Ivan sit way too far away in class—”
Mr. D'Argencourt slowly shifts away.
"—but right now the only good thing we've got going on the whole right side of the seating chart is that Nathanael is far, far away from society where he can impact the golden beauty that is Adrinette, and we have to make sure that he doesn't move up behind Marinette, or my secondary OTP will in sincere danger, and there's the problem of how to put Chloé farther from Adrien, and Ivan closer to Mylène, and Alya where she can actually talk to Nino, and Nathanael preferably even farther away from Marinette, and Sabrina who-knows-where—I mean, we could ship her with Max, but I'm not sure how they would interact considering the current seating—and just augh! We need a new seating chart to promote my ships! Now! I can’t do this anymore!”
Ms. Mendeleiev and Mr. D'Argencourt sit in silence, watching as Miss Bustier catches her breath.
“Caline…” Ms. Mendeleiev starts softly.
“Ladynoir!” Miss Bustier wails, dropping to her knees on the meeting room carpet. “My OTP! There hasn't been an akuma attack in weeks!”
By now, she's sobbing, and Ms. Mendeleiev cautiously places a hand on the literature teacher's shoulder.
"I'm—I’m facing separation anxiety,” Miss Bustier admits between cries. “I spent f—f—five hours sorting ships for my classes yesterday night! The Ladynoir fandom is inactive!”
"Is there... anything we can do to help?” Ms. Mendeleiev says hesitantly as Mr. D'Argencourt backs away.
"Thank you, Silvia, but I'll... I’ll be fine.”
Miss Bustier collects herself, swallowing her tears and climbing into a standing position. Mortified, she realizes that she’s just completely embarrassed herself in front of her colleagues. In one swift motion, Miss Bustier swings her purse over her shoulder and yanks her laptop from the projector monitor, striding away down the hallway as quickly as possible.
She supposes it's time to calm her nerves and read some more Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction.
