due to popular demand, here is the evolition of how rose sees/thinks of sydney throughout the books

before we start, we have to take in consideration rose’s state of mind when she meets sydney. not only was dimitri just turned into a strigoi and rose decides to search for him and kill him, but she just broke up left lissa and all her friends/family. throughout blood promise, rose feels alone. she is only focused on her goal of killing dimitri and thinks everyone has moved on from her.

so when she meets sydney and they are forced to go together to omsk, rose is annoyed.

but the thing about rose is that, no matter how much she tries to act tough, she is secretly a softie. despite sydney’s upbringing and personality being completely opposite of rose’s, they get to know each other and bond. sydney provides to rose the company that she misses from lissa.

so when sydney leaves, rose is clearly upset. she is alone once again.

now let’s jump to spirit bound. rose has all her friends/family back. sydney only shows up in one scene, but the way she is described is very telling:

rose is aware that sydney still has her alchemist views and might not feel the same as her. but there is that part of rose that considers sydney this unlikely friend and is open to that if given the opportunity.

now, last sacrifice. we (and rose) slowly see sydney not too hung up on her alchemist views and reciprocating (in her own way) her friendship with rose. and because of that, rose starts worrying more about sydney.

when rose and dimitri get separated from sydney at jill’s house, rose regrets leaving her behind and what that means for sydney when the alchemist deals with her. i’m serious, she mentions it almost every single page.

if that’s not friendship, i don’t know what that is.

literally as soon as rose meets with sydney again in bloodlines, the first thing she tells her is how worried she was!!

obviously in the rest of bloodlines, rose barely shows up, but when she does she is always friendly with sydney. also correct me if i’m wrong but it’s only in silver shadows where rose says that sydney is her friend.

but yeah, i love the friendship between these two and how despite their differences at first, both come to care and respect each other (very similar to sydrian if I say so 🫢) and it’s not talked about enough!!

Hey so also have Sir Crocodile brainrot and have recently reread Impel Down. This is probably nothing at all but it made me question the artistic choice made. Like we dont see Crocodiles full face until Luffy recognizes him. Before that tho he joins in on Jinbei & Ace's convo about Whitebeard and is shown to (non-)react to Boa Hancocks visit. But we only get his face in shadows or see the hook. Which. Why. Oda we know what he looks like and who the guy with the stitches on his face and the hook is. WHY OBSCURE HIM.

My friend, this is what we call a "cocktease"

Okay jokes aside, yes it was an artistic choise. More specifically, a storytelling technique Oda masterfully used to build up hype and excitement to Crocodile's eventual reveal and re-introduction into the story.

So thanks to Ms Goldenweek's cover story (which ran back during Water 7/Enies Lobby) we already knew Crocodile along with Daz, Bon-chan and Galdino had all been sent to Impel Down, when we also learned about Impel Down, Marineford and the Gates of Justice (+ the giant whirlpool between the three locations) to some extent. ((Now of course, if you were an anime-only then you would've had no idea about the former BW members being in Impel Down. And even if you had read the manga you still would've had to actually pay attention to the cover story and its lore, and not forgotten all about it))

So even before Luffy decides he's going to head to Impel Down to save Ace, we know Crocodile's going to be somewhere down there. The second Luffy arrives there, we are immidiately reminded of the fact when Domino mentions Crocodile taking the traditional "bath" new inmates take at the entrance. And as we descend deeper and deeper into Impel Down, with those cuts to what's happening down at Level 6 every now and then, as well as with the Baroque Works Countdown, Oda time and time again keeps on reminding of us of Crocodile's looming presence in the background. This is all absolutely deliberate. Crocodile was arguably the most iconic (maybe not most popular but iconic) One Piece villian at the time, if given an opportunity of course the readers wanted to see him again. But just letting us see him right away would be anti-climactic, and distracting from what's actually important (Ace, and Luffy getting to him as fast as possible). So keeping him hidden could serve multiple purposes:

For one, Crocodile doesn't get to steal the spotlight from the other characters (at least not too early). We can focus on Luffy, Ace, all the new Impel Down characters and the other returning characters in peace, while Crocodile waits for his turn. Another thing is that Crocodile's presence being downplayed gives off the impression that perhaps him being there isn't that important to the story. Thus, him teaming up with Luffy to break out isn't such an obvious twist (and so when that happens, it's ever more hype as a result)

But indeed, the most important part is that by teasing us constantly through out Impel Down, Oda creates hype. He makes us the readers excited if/when we might get to see the bastard, even if it was just a quick little cameo. So when Luffy finally reaches Level 6 and we finally do get that reveal, everyone loses their fucking marbles over the HISASHIBURI DANA MUGIWARA when we finally get to see The Motherfucker Himself. (And indeed, then getting to see him fight alongside Luffy is cool as fucking hell, completely unexpected and absolutely delightful)

But there's also another thing building up to Crocodile's reveal does. Compare his original introduction to the re-introduction

Compare Crocodile at the height of his power and influence, to the absolute rock bottom he has hit. No longer happily laughing while looking down on people (literally), he's filthy, he has given up on life, with sunken eyes and a hollow look on his face, only moved by a thirst for petty revenge (/an opportunity to go out with a bang). He doesn't even get the whole page for his grand reveal anymore, he's been shuffled to the side so the plot can progress on the same page.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

And to some degree, this is kind of meant to be a shocking realization to the readers. That this is not the same Crocodile we remember from Alabasta, that Crocodile died when Luffy defeated him. This is just the husk that remains, a shadow of what was once there. It's a sad sight, and probably not what the readers who loved Crocodile The Villian wanted to see. It's not the epic Return of the (Evil) King they wanted. And that juxtaposition helps, because Crocodile doesn't return into the story as a villian, but as a frenemy/ally-on-thin-ice. And that idea is easier to signal to the readers in a lowkey manner when you do his re-introduction like this.

So yes, Oda refusing to show Crocodile's face until Luffy found him was 100% a deliberate artistic choise. This is fantastic storytelling

I Am All In Rewatch - Episode 2x13

I gotta tell you, I I watched that.. the scene in the diner, and then the scene at the picnic between those two and with Luke and Lorelai and I just you know, I miss working with her. I thought we were great together. I thought that was just magic. I really thought it was funny. And I mean, how else I don't know how I got away with being so uh, I don't know, just just such a hardass....I think that's one of the reasons because I really kind of dug that attitude. You don't see that that attitude is so misplaced in that show. It's like what what I mean. It's like it's almost reaching Yanic levels of of sarcasm... I just was surprised that all of the resistance, like I'm not participating in this ridiculous thing, Taylor. You know, It's like it was funny. I really enjoyed watching it because I didn't expect it. I just didn't expect it, and I didn't expect how Luke was at the picnic and she started getting all mooney with me a little bit....He knew what he was saying to her. She was romancing him. She was telling him that she has a crush on him and that she's in love with him. She's basically saying that. That's how I read it. So it was like this complete reversal, and it was not like episodes before. It's like my friend, my friend, and she's not no. I mean, we're just friends and this kind of thing. But now suddenly during Tisket and Tasket, she I think she she kind of owned her feelings a little bit and opened up to him in the gazebo and it made him uncomfortable a little bit... I was very charming. I thought she was very charming in that scene, and I thought that..It was my favorite, uh so far, my favorite Luke and Lorelai scene, that gazebo scene. I love that scene. I really loved it. Yeah, yeah, I just I really enjoyed it. I really did. -Scott

It honestly has no business being this good, it was made pretty early on in the story so many years ago, and STILL! So in character, and honestly so funny, AND no weird business either. Like listen, I scour the internet, looking for any marchil content, any marchil content at all… And find a dry af desert, no life here, literally jackshit nothing. Only Pixiv has some afaik but the nsfw is def… Hm. 😔 (2 fics tagged chirumaru on there btw!! That aren’t mine lol) Thank you marchil meshi author if I had to pick 1 piece of marchil nsfw to exist I’d choose this one (honestly that’s already so close to reality lol) Thank u Asaki Takayuki I owe u my life. Oh while I’m here, I find this so funny/odd, but in japanese fandom ship names are simply the beginning of each name smushed together, like marchil or chilmar. The order of the names is that the first one is the "top"… Idk how jp fandoms live without switches but aight, but in m/f ships this means that typically the man is the first half of the ship name right. WELL WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT marchil is so much more used than chilmar lmaoo. Even more stats: On Pixiv, the tag marchil had all the artworks, but the chilmar tag had all the fics.
