Chara Week Day 4: Flowers

One of my favourite parts of "Persuasion" is when Frederick says to Anne "You did not use to like cards; but time makes many changes." and then she responds "I am not yet so much changed." and then he says "It is a period, indeed! Eight years and a half is a period!" because this is such an important part of the book. It's when they both truly realise that neither of them is the same as they were 8 years ago. They're not 19 and 23 anymore, but 27 and 31. They both have scars and are more mature with a better understanding of the world and, more importantly, each other. And all part of each of them wants to do is go back to the beginning and rewrite the story from the start so they aren't separated and have to go through over eight years of emotional agony, but they can't, so they have to write a new ending. And they do.

I finished my Starscream designs for my Steven Universe inspired Transformers Au :D (Tap image for better resolution)

So I wanted Starscream to take the place (loosely) of Peridot in the AU, which you could probably tell if you noticed the poses I used (they are poses of Peridot from the beginning and end of the series)

These honestly were so fun tho, because for the second design I used an actual Lamborghini reference to map out Starscream’s robot mode. The first was kinda hard tho because I didn’t want it to look like he had an Earth Alt Mode, but I think it ended up pretty much looking like that lol

But if you’re wondering why I designed this Starscream with two different Alt Modes: In this Au, Starscream accidentally lost his wings after being captured by the Autobots (to mimic Peridot losing her limb enhancers) and to combat this (later on when he officially became an Autobot), he decided to become a grounder, because without wings his seeker alt mode was pretty much useless (I did this to mimic Peridot having metal powers).

This is a very simple explanation for it, and there will be a LOT more heartbreak when I actually get to that point in the story, but I felt like I had to get the plot out of my mind! Especially since I’m only on the second chapter of my fic and still have a long way until Starscream even shows up lmao

BUT HERE HE IS. AU STARSCREAM WOO. Ignore the visible hand on the Right Starscream. I got annoyed and ended up just leaving it super simplified lmao

so. let's talk about symbolism. more specifically the symbolism of gillion's armor post episode 87 and it's absence in the recent episodes.

i made a much less articulate post about gillion's redesign and what it means for him here already. to recap, gillion's new armor is a reflection of him feeling the need to seem stronger and more dangerous than he actually is in an effort to better protect his friends, family, crew etc. he had very recently been split up from them (the dungon card incident) and chip and jay were visibly fucked up from that. he wants to make sure that something like that never happens again. he himself has said that the only reason he doesn't want to die is because he can't let chip and jay be alone like that again, and so he fortifies himself so that he doesn't die and so he can better serve as a shield. a nice big armor makes him feel more secure in his ability to protect.

but he's not wearing his armor right now, is he. and i want to look at that in two contexts. first pre navy confrontation and then post navy confrontation.

gillion takes off his armor to have it be worked on by roofus in episode 88, just before the trio go to confront edyn about her connections to the navy. gillion goes into that situation unarmored on purpose. gillion takes a leap of faith to be vulnerable in this very moment. he trusts his sister and he's positive that she'll be there to clear things up and he opens himself up, only to be hurt even further when all he finds is a letter explaining nothing and a deep unsettling fear for edyn's wellbeing. he opened himself up to potential hurt willingly and he got it. and while naturally they weren't expecting and didn't get into combat, and so gillion's lack of armor didn't come into play textually, his voluntary physical vulnerability is very clearly paralleling his voluntary emotional vulnerability in this moment.

comparing that to post navy confrontation, it's pretty clear where the distinction lies. gillion's lack of armor leads to him getting cursed by kuba kenta, and when they are driven out of allport gillion is forced to leave his armor at the divine barkinist, the same way he is forced into emotional vulnerability by the curse. he is walking around unarmored because he has no other choice, and he is giving up his emotional guard not much later when he is driven to the brink of insanity by the sleep deprivation and the pain.

the first instance of this happening is him opening up to finn by writing him a picture book about his journey so far when he is half delirious due to his lack of sleep, but it's much more apparent when he wakes up screaming from a nightmare and throws jay against a wall in his panic. he is weak and he doesn't have the energy to argue when chip and jay decide that they need to help him, when they decide they need to save him from certain death. if gillion had had all his usual drive and ability he would've refused, he would've fought to save the people of zero first. and he would've died. but he didn't, he was forced into that vulnerability once again. and later he couldn't even have done anything to stop them if he wanted, he was paralyzed by pain, having to be carried around by chip and jay. he never had the option to deny may's help. he never had the option to refuse to be cared for. the way his physical actual armor was kept from him (by circumstance, not on purpose), so was his metaphorical armor, his emotional guard, the walls he usually kept so firmly around his heart.

he started out wanting to fortify more, in an effort to keep himself and his family safe, in an effort to avoid weakness. and shortly after he gives that fortitude up for just a moment, which backfires horribly, and not only hurts him terribly in the moment, but forces him to stay vulnerable against his will. physically and emotionally.

dont apologize for going insane im putting my rambles out there to also find insane people 🤝🤝🤝 but yeah i haven't played rebirth yet but seeing people complain on the basis of "it's not og" is ALWAYS crazy to me because it's SUPER clear, in both an in-universe and out-of-universe sense that it's like. Explicitly not OG. It's so explicitly about breaking the chains of og and that's super super interesting. remakeverse is like it's own beast and its very cool and it's also making me lose my mind because the "what if"'s are so beautiful but also [breaking down about the original timeline] THERE WAS SO MUCH LOVE THERE TOO AND IT DIDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING!!!! HEAD IN HANDS. anyway thats to say i agree with all of your thoughts thank u for the insane food
