Man, this is why I always hated math class.
Khan Academy gave me this easy (or so I thought) problem to solve:
"A factory makes toys that are sold for $10 a piece. The factory has 40 workers, and they each produce 25 toys a day. The factory is open 5 days a week. What is the total value of toys the factory produces in a day?"
I said to myself, okay...
10 times 40 times 25 equals 10,000. That means the factory produces $10,000 worth of value per WORKING day.
10,000 times 5 equals 50,000. And then there are two days per week (the weekend) when no value is produced. So, per week, the total value produced is still only $50,000.
And finally, there are seven days in a full week, so $50,000 divided by 7 equals roughly $7,142.86. That's the total value of toys produced per day. Not "per work day", but "per day", as it specifically says in the problem.
But what does the teacher say as he guides us through it? 10 times 40 times 25 equals 10,000, so the answer is 10,000.
That's it. The end.
He even acknowledges: "So, you might be thinking, 'Hey wait, we didn't use all the information! We didn't use the "five days per week" information!' And yeah, as it turns out, that was information we didn't need."
'As it turns out'?! Are you kidding me right now?! I carefully read the question, precisely calculated exactly what it was asking for, taking all of the provided information into account... and now you're saying I'm supposed to have somehow magically known to ignore one of those pieces of information in order to make it easier for myself?
Just admit that your problem is worded badly, dude. UGH this kind of shit drives me crazy. Why can't people use words clearly >:(

I know you said that you have done some script writing for others. I wonder if you have any advice about how to get started writing a script? Also, what was your experience doing that work?
It's writing that demands patience. I struggled for years to master the craft, submit work, face rejection, get close and then get tossed into the wind, lol. Looked for agents... all that stuff.
I've had things optioned and never made. Went through the whole development hell with a producer who wanted me to turn the leads in my horror script white instead of keeping them Black, even though they were based on Black American folklore. Screenwriting is a test of what you are willing to give up in your soul to get things made. I was always a writer who wrote with intention for my culture, and it wasn't conducive to making it for me personally when I was actively doing it. I used to go to Sundance and smell the desperation on everybody, especially Black folks. It's a tough gig, but I did love every moment doing it. It was my passion and I only started pursuing it because I wanted to see Black horror movies being made that centered Black people. I was before my time I guess, because now Black horror is finally in. Then I went back to fiction writing where I could control my content.
All that being said, what I learned is, it's not about the writing, it's really about who you're connected to, who will vouch for you, and if you can get names attached to projects. That was disheartening to learn because we all have these dreams of just being the best writer possible, and that's not how it works unfortunately.
The best advice I can give you just to get started is read all the best scripts that have come out in the last three years. There are websites where you can read and download scripts. There's also scripts floating around the internet. Read tons of scripts. Then read tons more, because you have to know what good writing is and you have to master your own writing voice and you won't learn that until you've read a lot, and then...write a lot of scripts. Lots of scripts. Not five or ten. Not twenty. Thirty at the minimum because you have to master the craft. And then...you have to get connected. Not just writing groups, but going to film festivals and networking with folks who know people. Getting a production job on a TV show or a movie helps more.
There are plenty of good books that teach screenwriting. You may want to check your local college/university to see if there are classes/workshops offered if you are a newbie to screenwriting altogether.
Here is a list of books for beginners that are worth reading. Try to find them at the library first. My writing mentor for screenwriting is on this list. Pilar Alessandra. I worked with her for years to hone my craft, and her book, "The Coffee Break Screenwriter" is chock full of easy exercises to get you started. I know her personally.
Here's an easy litmus test that I always tell people to try to get their feet wet if they think they have a script that might be ready for a test submission. Submit it to the Nicholl Fellowship. It's run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. (The Oscars folks). It's one of the most prestigious fellowships for screenwriters and they pay you to write for a year. Here's the link:

Pros read the scripts and determine who the Fellows are. They have quarter finalists, and finalists, and then winners. If you can get your script to the quarter finals, you may have what it takes.
The screenwriting software I used was the same Ryan Coogler used when he got started. Final Draft (the industry standard for years). Screenwriting costs money. You have to invest in yourself and your writing. It takes hella time and you have to love writing to endure. I loved it, even when I was rejected for things.

Thoughts on creating Art on the 3ds

So recently I bought myself a 3ds XL which is super exciting! I’ve wanted one of these for a really long time and my hands have officially grown from small child size so the original 3ds is a bit uncomfortable for me to hold. I’ve gotta say, it’s kind of wild to go from a little kid to an adult with the 3ds still my main gaming system but I couldn’t be happier about it!

I bought my 3ds XL off of Goodwill Auctions and I spent a little over $120 on it, and that included physical copies of Mario Kart 7, Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, Super Mario 3D Land, and Yoshi’s Island DS, so a really good deal! I’ve been lurking on Facebook Marketplace and Mercari for a while, but I couldn’t find anything close to that good of a deal (at least nothing that wasn’t secretly a scam.) Best Christmas present I’ve gotten since my original 3ds back in 2013!
Anyways, I’ve been on break from art school because my partner unexpectedly passed away and I am not doing well with that. Gaming has been a big help for me in this time. Nintendogs and Animal Crossing have helped me feel a lot less lonely even though I am alone now. I still love art though, so I’ve been messing around with that on my 3ds since I always have it with me. I was actually playing a lot of Pokémon Art Academy with my little sisters the week before she passed, just in my free time. Now that I have a whole lot more free time, I’ve gotten through almost the entire game, and have played around with a bunch of other drawing software on the 3ds.

Essentially, here I want to do a mini personal retrospective on my history of doing art on the DS and go through and then later review all the different drawing programs on the 3ds on a different post
I did my first ever animations on Flipnote when I was little and it made animation seem like something I actually could do myself, instead of something that those grown professional artists did that somehow made entire worlds. I have a lot of fond memories of making Flipnotes with my friends and trading them around, making our own memes before we really knew what that was. This was on my DSi which I had before the 3ds. What a device!
In my animation class, which I did not end up getting to finish due to the aforementioned death of my partner, I did several first drafts and test animations on my 3ds instead of on the big Wacom tablets (much to the confusion of my professor. Sorry about that Professor!) I’m used to drawing and painting being things that fit in my hands instead of the huge 18 by 24 sketchbooks we had to use in figure drawing or the huge drawing tablets. They definitely have their uses, but they were really intimidating to me. Most of my art work over the past decade has been very small and very detailed instead of huge gestural drawings, and while I did have to get used to that eventually, I still have a preference for the handheld, which translates great into digital art on the 3ds!

(This acrylic painting I did in high school is 4 by 6, which is roughly the size of a 3ds xl.)
I used to do lots of doodles on the notes app on my childhood 3ds and also played around with Flipnote 3d, though I never got as into it as I did the DSi version when I was littler


Nowadays I like to do more detailed painterly things in Art Academy, cartoons in Pokémon Art Academy, and a lot of my doodles in Flipnote 3d. I love the small form factor and with the 3ds XL I find that it’s easier to make things that I’m actually happy with. I wish more traditional digital art applications had some of the features that the 3ds ones have, like sound effects, realistic features, and built in button control.

There’s a lot of options of ways and applications you can do art in on the 3ds and my hyperfixation on the 3ds is definitely fed by that fact. I’ll be going through and reviewing all of them from my perspective and once I’ve done that, I’ll add a link below.

Chapter 16 Prologue Part 3:
We start with a dream flashback of Curren, where she had to go through painful test after test in the lab. Their words don’t bother her, as the other day her brother was scrapped for his hardware and she will be next for her software. Her brother had excellent exam results. He is on par with Isaac and Bertro. But the body's endurance is reaching its limits, and just the other day, he was discarded and taken away. She was captured by the security mechanoids. After this, she will probably be dumped at the "edge of paradise." Suddenly her giant robot brother MS-C1 appeared to rescue her and they escaped using time leap for the first time. Back to the present, Curren thinks about Michael and Amaterasu having their priorities wrong. She commented that the reason they lost was because they couldn't bring themselves to say that they didn't care about the old world that gave birth to them. They don't care about their old home that tried to abandon them. What's important from now on is just how will humans survive? Her and her siblings were incomplete. She couldn't survive on one side alone, she accepted that. The choice, the thought, there may not have been any freedom of choice, but. This is far better than being trapped and destroyed by the outdated idea of a fixed "base." She will carry out Plan C. The girl decided they will live in the future. There is no need for freedom of choice. There is only one way to go.

Back to Tu'er Shen as he continues to see into the future and seeing something beyond comprehension. Back to Onyankopon who explains that “new life” are forms of life made to be adapted to the future. In other words, a resident of a different world, a utopia. This is the next step of MxOther’s plans. “New life” is migrating to the future city, and to Tokyo. And so the future of forming the majority in Tokyo has been decided. Onyankopon remembers a report about the Yoyogi academy being a testing site established for that type of research. Where multiple minds can co-exist in one body. Back to Tu'er Shen, who after seeing the dreaded future decided to find a new guild, he can’t handle what’s coming on his own. Back to Mononobe, Mononobe tells MC there’s a place he wants to take them. The old laboratory at Yoyogi.

The next day, we see Tu'er Shen and Hei Long Yi Quan, the other day Bohemio told the new recruit Tu'er Shen to join up with Hei Long Yi Quan for a mission since their abilities will be perfect together. The mission is to investigate the whereabouts of the institute that’s working with MxOther. Tu'er Shen gets a vision and Hei Long Yi Quan launched his sacred artifact at the maybe threat.

English Just 'Badly Pronounced French', Paris Academic Says (Tom Barfield, Barron's, March 09 2024)
"French linguist Bernard Cerquiglini would like to send a copy of his new book, "The English language doesn't exist: it's badly pronounced French", to King Charles III. (…)
Norman French's use by the new colonial aristocracy endowed English with words that at first glance might look homegrown, like "cabbage", "lure" or "wage", in the 150 years after William the Conqueror took the throne.
But Cerquiglini is most interested by the 13th and 14th centuries, when French -- by then a second language used in trade, administration and law -- bled freely into English because "a job, fortunes in land or cash, upholding a contract, liberty or even one's life, could depend on mastering" the tongue.
Half of English's borrowings from French took place from 1260-1400, producing words like "bachelor", from the old French word "bachelier", meaning a young noble not yet a knight.
"Travel" is related to the modern French word for labour, "travail", while "clock" stems from the French "cloche", a bell struck to sound the hours before mechanical timepieces were invented.
By the time Shakespeare came to write his plays in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, around "40 percent of the 15,000 words in his works are of French origin", Cerquiglini notes.
These days the place of "Anglo-Saxon" words in modern French can stir defensiveness in Paris, often from the Academie Francaise, charged since 1635 with preserving the language in its "pure" form.
"Language in France is official, of the state, national. And so of course we have an academy" whose members enjoy "a ridiculous outfit, a sword, a palace by the Seine" river in Paris, Cerquiglini said.
In recent years the academy has railed against imports related to Covid-19, such as "cluster" or "testing", as well as tech terms like "big data".
Cerquiglini said the academy has scored some worthwhile wins, such as convincing the French-speaking world to use the native-sounding "logiciel" instead of the once-omnipresent "software".
But he added: "This isn't an invasion, these are French words that have gone for training in England and that are coming back to us.""

Okay. After like 3 years I’m finally posting that essay on leadership in the pilot episode of Star Trek Voyager that was a term paper for me during college. I was very hesitant to post and still am not due to quality, but out of sheer caution in regards to plagiarism software used in education nowadays. So PLEASE DO NOT COPY FOR BOTH OF OUR SAKES.
Thankfully, I am graduated now, so I have less resignations on the topic (but it is still in the plaigerism testing systems, so please don’t copy it, mostly for your own sake in academic writing).
It’s probably boring to a lot of people, but for anyone who wants to read it here you go.
A “Voyage” in Leadership

I. Introduction
“Space the final frontier”; these are the words that have been imprinted on viewers by the not so subtle branding of Star Trek (Star Trek,1966). While the original series surged television screens in the 60s, the 90s were flooded with a revitalization of the pop culture phenomenon. Until Voyager aired, the series that preceded it, like Next Generation, were very formulaic; they took place in known regions and dealt with pre-established alien species and conflicts. Voyager in its nature broke the mold by instating Star Trek’s first female captain and brought Trek to new heights with new moral dilemmas. The series takes the Voyager ship away from all command structures the crew has ever known. They have to make every choice and decision with little guidance but each other. Star Trek has always been about exploration and when referencing Voyager with that same lens, that exploration also applies to people. Each individual aboard this journey makes decisions that impact who they are as leaders and followers, some like Voyagers captain, Janeway, demonstrate several healthy leadership qualities, where others are just getting their footing in their leadership journeys. Within this paper I will be diving into the depth of Captain Janeway as a leader, the forming of the Voyager crew, and small choices the individuals make which define their character.
II. Description
The Maquis, a rebel group to the Federation, are sent through a shock wave to the other side of the galaxy, 70,000 light years from the solar system. Captain Katherine Janeway is sent on a mission to track down the Maquis ship. This mission includes standard starfleet personnel and the addition of Tom Paris, ex- Maquis doing time at a Starfleet Penal Settlement. En route to Voyager, Tom, meets fresh out of the academy, Harry Kim. Despite only just meeting Kim, Paris saves him from getting caught up in foreign schemes. We are introduced to the show’s namesake via Paris and Kim making their rounds checking in with the less than personable head of medical, the similar first officer, and finally a non-judgmental individual, Captain Janeway, as the ship disembarks on their journey. The same phenomena that launched the Maquis ship 75 years away, launches Voyager to the same location as the Maquis, each with substantial damage. Janeway leaves her position on the bridge to go and aid engineering in repairs. The entirety of the crew gets transported to the array, the ship of The Caretaker, which sourced the anomaly that brought them to the other end of the galaxy, also known as the Delta quadrant. They all awake three days later, each crew missing 1 person. For Voyager, that person was Harry Kim. Janeway and Chakotay, the Maquis leader, unite and join forces in hopes of finding their crew mates. Paris becomes especially upset at the loss of Kim. Kes, a local, informs them that Kim is with her species the Ocampa, a cave dwelling group. The Ocampa have been cared after by the Caretaker for generations. Kim attempts to escape to the surface and by the time the rescue team make it to the Ocampa, he had already left. With the Caretaker beginning to collapse the cave exits, the rescue team escapes to the surface, but not before Chakotay gets trapped and Paris goes back to help him. Upon returning to their respective ships, the Kazon, a local gang-like race, begin attacking Voyager in attempts to attain its technology whilst the Maquis ship holds them off so Janeway can speak to the Caretaker to send them back to the Alpha Quadrant, where Earth is and where they all began their journey. What Janeway discovers is that the Caretaker is dying and that he plans on self-destructing the array so the Kazon can't use it against the Ocampa. Before he gets the chance to, he dies. Janeway makes the decision to destroy the array to save the Ocampa thus truly stranding them all in the Delta Quadrant (Berman, 1995). The captain of Voyager is the epitome of the ideal leader, her followers are her crew, and her situation is nothing less than complex and ever changing as she must “navigate the ambiguity” within (Wheatley, 1999).
III. Group Formation and Interactions
Although Janeway had never met Paris before, she is immediately very personable in their conversation and establishes a connection before even attempting to recruit Paris to join her team (Akin, 2020). She references working with his father before becoming a captain, and in the novel, Voyager: Mosaic, Tom’s father was the one who pushed Janeway to pursue command because of her strong leadership (Taylor, 1996). Tom and Janeway’s relationship immediately develops into one of familiarity and becomes strong with their commonality, which makes Tom feel more comfortable with his decision to go through with the deal to join Janeway on this mission. Janeway also eased the decision by providing Paris with a reward. Janeway is quite smart about this encounter because she lets him make the decision on his own and does not punish him if he chooses to not go through with it; it is clear she is using a variety of influence tactics in this conversation, like rational persuasion, personal appeals, exchange, and apprising, to get her goal accomplished (Curphy et al., 2014).
Paris meets Kim in a compromising position of blatant racism, but knows he is younger and less experienced in the ways of the galaxy, so before their introduction, Paris in fact saves Kim from danger of which, in the novelization, includes Kim thinking to himself: “I’ll never be that cool” in reference to Paris, putting him on some sort of pedestal early on in their relationship (Graf, 1995). The chief of medical and the first officer are put off by Paris because of his criminal record, that his new friend, Kim, still is unaware of. These crewmembers that they encounter are understandable in their attitude toward Paris given his past, but they each fail to recognize he is there on his own accord; they are still in the Newtonian mindset where they understand the individual parts, but fail to grasp the total situation (FOWLETT). Kim confronts Paris about his misdeeds and says, “I don't need anyone to choose my friends for me” (Berman, 1995). Their relationship is already so strong from this comment. Paris also notes that he took full responsibility for his actions involving his time with the Maquis, increasing the characters overall trust we as viewers give him (Akin, 2020). Though he was put in a penal colony for the actions, he still has the trust of those in authority, which is why he was chosen for this mission and Janeway knows he has potential to grow and get past that part of his history. Later in the episode, Paris is the one who notices Kim isn’t on Voyager .“The writers put a lot into their relationship being developed” actors Robert Duncan McNeil and Garrett Wang note, who play Tom Paris and Harry Kim respectively (McNeil, Wang, 2020). Down on the planet, Kim and the stolen Maquis crewman get to know one another in captivity; despite their different backgrounds, they try to understand their situation together and become mutual allies because of their situation. This demonstration of the group forming process is what leads them to team up and eventually escape back to their ships (McNutt et al., 2004).
IV. Captain Janeway as a Leader
Janeway takes everything she is dealt one moment at a time, although she has more than one thing on her plate at a given time in the episode, she somehow manages to keep things in order to deal with each one to the best of her ability individually and not get distracted. While Janeway is not always perfect, she is a prime example of good leadership in practice. Janeway has a great understanding of her duty as a manager which allows her to cope with the natural complexities of commanding a starship. If she needs things done a specific way, she is tactful and organized, but ends up getting her followers motivated to get things done (Kotter as cited in Wren).
When Paris and Kim finally meet Janeway for the first time in her ready room, Kim is even more stressed than meeting other members of the ship. Janeway sees this panic in his behavior and puts him at ease, but keeps the situation formal as she is still the captain. Janeway knows what she wants and how she wants it done; she uses precision and accuracy to deliver her message of trust to Kim. Janeway is a very adaptive kind of leader. Everything she does is a causality of what is occurring around her; she is constantly looking at the bigger picture and highlighting areas where problems occur (Grashow et al., 2009).
Janeway stays as level-headed as she can in the distress of her damaged ship, but is forceful getting things accomplished. She recognizes that many of her crew have died and she still remains calm, not allowing herself to mourn them until the ship is in a more stable position (Akin, 2020). Janeway leaves the bridge in the hands of the remaining crew there and trusts they know what they are doing and to continue performing admirably with her absence as she goes to assess and command in engineering, where she is more urgently needed(Akin, 2020).
When Janeway arrives in Engineering she provides insight and guides them to a solution to fixing the ship, but she still leaves the duty of actually fixing, to the crewmen. Janeway took control and got them on to a problem solving path and then let them fix it in the end, even though she could have (Akin, 2020).
Janeway is adamant about getting onemember of her crew and a member of her enemy’s crew back; Janeway shows remorse and declares she needs to get to know who her crew really is in order to get them home. This moment is very thought out as she has actively demonstrated her urge to create connections with everyone she meets, but because she has lost Kim, she is doubting herself; in this moment, her feminine attributes could be a downfall, but overall it allows her to care for her crew like they are family (Beggan et al., 2004). In her nature, being a female also influences her leadership style; she reaches out to crew members in time of her own struggle despite her being higher up in the chain of command than them (Beggan et al., 2004). In this moment of self-reflection, her security officer says, “The crew will not benefit from the leadership of an exhausted captain” and she snaps out of her head to get back on track (Berman, 1995).She knows that if she is to be successful in saving Kim, capturing the Maquis, or even getting them all home, she needs to detach her strong emotions, but remain connected to the tasks at hand and she has that switch in her brain accessible, not letting the sociology define her leadership too much (Beggan et al., 2004). As noted in the Leadership Encyclopedia, women tend to be more democratic and throughout this episode she is constantly aiding a variety of people of which in return she receives input and counsel from them without asking for it (Beggan et al., 2004).
Captain Janeway makes all of the crucial decisions away from her higher ups. No one can dispute her except her followers, and they don’t, in this grand decision to travel back to the Alpha Quadrant the long way home because they have trust in their leader. Janeway essentially breaks down the barrier of what is normal and from this point further, the ship is unlike any other in Star Trek history. The crew of the Enterprise and Deep Space 9 were all very close, but Voyager became a family. Janeway made sure that even she got to know every crew member(Gabriel 2018). Janeway is noted throughout various forms of Trek media for her leadership. From her interactions with individuals, knowledge of when to put on her manager hat v. her leader one, to tactics in influence and delegation.
V. Other Leadership Demonstrated
In servant leadership, an individual leads by serving others, meaning they are not necessarily the one in command of a situation, but they lead themselves as being part of the followers . Tom makes a daring move when Chakotay gets stuck in one of the tunnels; he returns to help him escape. While each still having residual feuds from Tom betraying the Maquis by working with Starfleet, this brave example of servant leadership does not go amiss. While servant leadership general doesn’t include risk of bodily harm, Tom uses it as such, he had learned from earlier in the episode he had to initiate things for himself and in this he chooses to risk his own safety to serve the goal he had made for himself, “the invisible leader”(Northouse, 2019). In this same scenario, even in the face of death, Chakotay’s leadership style is in full display as he tries to command a situation he is not in command of; he virtually argues with Tom the entire time he is saving his life and is a clear display that authority is a personality trait for him. Tom has grown from the first time we see him in this episode to this point; in the beginning he was very the follower that required the use of several motivation tactics to get work out of, but at this moment he has learned that his growth as a person is stemming from not necessarily being in command of a position, but serving those in those positions to the best of their ability(Northouse, 2019). Despite Chakotay’s near death experience and Tom’s clear display of servant leadership, Chakotay’s attitude does not change, but there is a clear shift in his heart and end goal as he is willing to die to save both crews. At every encounter, Janeway has tried to negotiate and ultimately, she dooms her and The Maquis crew because of her unrequited obligation and active servant leadership: “We never asked to be involved… but we are” (Berman 1995). Without consultation, Chakotay agrees to join the crews and strand themselves far from home because it will save the Ocampa.
VI. Conclusion
Since time began, species far and wide have been looking for good leadership. Star Trek is just a glimpse into the future stating that while thought processes may become more evolved and technology will advance, individuals will still have the same core functions that they have always had. There will always be want to develop strong relations, there will always be some hesitation to trust everyone, and at some point will return to where one came from. Voyager is the embodiment of leadership both good and bad, it stresses moral debates, ethical dilemmas that often leaves you thinking. No one on board is perfect, but it is clear they will grow on the journey home.

Janeway left the bridge with Tom having a look of disappointment due to the fact that he never received orders. He had faith that he had gained Janeway’s trust to aid in other ways than just being ex-Maquis, but it is clear that Janeway takes full consideration of his identity right now. This small interaction displays how his time as a criminal has heightened his need for more hands-on leadership than the rest of the crew needs, in the future he needs to follow the invisible leader or else he will be left continually disappointed as we see here (Hickman et al., 2004). By the end of the episode, Tom has a huge shift where he becomes his own invisible leader and takes charge of his own situation (Hickman et al., 2004).

Dubbed “Xianzhong-ology” by netizens—a reference to an infamously bloody Ming rebel Zhang Xianzhong—these “revenge on society” attacks unsettled a nation unaccustomed to such public displays of disorder. Unlike incidents in the past, this spate of violence seemed to reflect deeper fractures within Chinese society, sparking widespread unease and forcing an unusual degree of national introspection—as well as a broader push for greater security by the authorities.
For Chinese President Xi Jinping, these attacks represent a profound challenge—not just to governance but to the narrative he has spent his career crafting. Shaped by the tumult of the Cultural Revolution, Xi prizes stability above all else. The 2014 Kunming train station knife attack, attributed to Uyghur separatists, spurred sweeping counterterrorism measures, including a vast surveillance apparatus. But the current wave of violence is different. These are not acts of ideological extremism or organized resistance—they are eruptions of despair. Surveillance cameras and facial recognition software cannot anticipate or address the kind of desperation driving these tragedies.
But are these attacks truly on the rise, or has the hyperamplified lens of social media distorted perceptions, making rare events feel omnipresent?
China’s Ministry of Public Security consistently reports that the country remains one of the world’s safest, with homicide rates among the lowest globally. Violent crimes, from theft to fraud, are reported to have decreased significantly since 2019. This narrative is further supported by the 2024 Rule of Law Blue Book, published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, which paints a picture of a society largely free from widespread criminality. The veracity of these figures is uncertain; criminologist Borge Bakken has argued that the vast majority of crime in China never appears in the official figures.
Whether the figures are real or not, this statistical assurance contrasts sharply with public perception—and, in some cases, doesn’t even correspond with police departments’ own reports. According to a BBC tally, police recorded just three to five pedestrian or stranger attacks annually between 2019 and 2023, but that number jumped to 19 in 2024. Casualties followed a grim trajectory: Fatalities rose from three in 2019 to 16 in 2023 before surging to 63 in 2024, while injuries increased from 28 to 40 before spiking to 166. It remains unclear whether all such incidents are officially reported. Meanwhile, social media platforms such as Weibo played a pivotal role in amplifying these events, spreading news to millions of people before state censors could intervene.
Like mass killings in the United States, the roots of this violence often seem to be personal frustration. Consider the Zhuhai car ramming, where a man’s dissatisfaction with his divorce settlement ended in 35 deaths. Or the Wuxi vocational school attack, where a student’s frustration over academic failure and unpaid wages led him to stab eight people and injure 17. There are common threads in these attacks: economic insecurity, diminishing upward mobility, and the absence of robust mental health support systems. For years, breakneck economic expansion served as a salve to social problems, masking deep-seated inequities and offering hope to millions of people. Today, that foundation feels increasingly unsteady. Youth unemployment officially hovers around 20 percent, though experts believe the real number is much higher. Disillusioned young people, some embracing the tangping ethos of “lying flat,” have opted out of the rat race altogether, rejecting a system they see as failing them.
The collapse of the real estate market has only deepened the malaise. For decades, homeownership was more than a financial milestone—it was a cornerstone of middle-class identity and a promise of stability. That promise turned out to be false: today, as property values plummet, millions of families are instead trapped in financial quicksand.
Economic woes are compounded by stark inequalities. The wealthiest 1 percent of Chinese citizens now control more than 30 percent of the country’s wealth, while the bottom half hold just 6 percent—a gap on par with the United States and Europe. By 2015, China’s richest 10 percent were taking home 40 percent of the nation’s income, outpacing France but still trailing the United States, where the figure stood at 47 percent. For a government that has staked its legitimacy on delivering “common prosperity,” this glaring disparity is a dangerous contradiction. Local governments, drowning in debt, are increasingly unable to provide essential services such as education and health care, forcing families to shoulder burdens they cannot sustain. These pressures have created a society on edge, where every setback feels insurmountable.
There’s little social support for people struggling. Despite growing awareness, mental health remains a deeply stigmatized issue in China. Counseling is scarce, and seeking help is often viewed as a sign of weakness. According to the World Health Organization, 54 million Chinese people have depression and another 41 million anxiety disorders. The problem is particularly acute among young people: A 2022 study reveals that nearly 40% of Chinese college students experience subthreshold depression, with heightened risks linked to financial strain, chronic illness, and pandemic-related stress. Barclay Bram, a fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis, whose research focuses on mental health developments and youth unemployment in China, cautions against oversimplified narratives about the mental health crisis. “There has been a surge of interest in mental health in China over the past two decades and especially since the [COVID-19] pandemic. This means that we need to be careful when stating that mental health is significantly declining in China—it may well be that people are seeking treatment at higher rates and therefore appearing more in statistics,” he said.
While awareness and diagnosis may be increasing, many experts argue that deeper structural issues are also at play. Rising social pressures, economic instability, and limited access to mental health care are fueling both despair and, in some cases, violence. Wei Zhizhong, the chief expert at Guangzhou’s Yiwei Duxin Psychological Counseling Center, points to China’s rapid socioeconomic shifts, which have left many struggling with emotional and psychological distress. Others contend that the country’s underdeveloped mental health system fails to provide timely intervention, allowing crises to escalate unchecked.
However, Bram emphasizes the importance of avoiding unfounded assumptions: “We should be careful when attributing recent attacks to mental illness. There is plenty of stigma around mental health in China, and without clear diagnostic evidence backing up the connection between specific perpetrators and mental health, we should be cautious about making armchair diagnoses from afar.”
Yet there is a palpable sense of the psychological toll of the last five years. “Burnout is everywhere, but not everyone recognizes it,” said Chang Che, a writer who has extensively covered social trends in China. Che highlights an inequality not just in how mental health is viewed but also in how it is addressed: In China’s first-tier cities, a burgeoning discourse around personal and societal ills has emerged, led by an educated, middle-class population equipped with tools such as therapy and self-help literature.
They theorize their exhaustion, analyze the broader status quo, and explore pathways to change. Outside these urban hubs, however, the same pervasive burnout exists but often without the language, resources, or frameworks to address it. In Shanghai, burnout is a topic of conversation; in Wuxi, it’s an unspoken reality. This divide is reflected in the attackers themselves. Many come from marginalized backgrounds or belong to older generations, often from regions where economic decline and social isolation have deepened their struggles. Without access to mental health resources or structured coping mechanisms, frustration festers and, in some cases, erupts into violence. The disparity in access to mental health resources and coping mechanisms may partly explain why violent outbursts often emerge in less developed areas, where avenues for relief are far more limited.
Despair and violence are tests of the system. China’s weiwen, or social stability maintenance system, is formidable. It employs an array of tools—from high-tech surveillance to the suppression of dissent—to preempt unrest. However, it provides no solutions to the underlying causes of societal discontent.
The government’s response to the 2024 attacks illustrates this tension. In Zhuhai, authorities implemented a profiling system designed to identify “high-risk” individuals—those without spouses, children, income, or assets and who had suffered significant setbacks. The approach reflects the state’s reliance on identifying and managing perceived threats rather than alleviating the underlying social and economic pressures that create them. Bram warns of the potential pitfalls of this strategy: “There is a risk that the government will conclude from these attacks that people facing difficult life circumstances—divorce, unemployment, bankruptcy, etc.—are inherently ‘sensitive’ individuals, i.e., high-risk. This risks pathologizing and securitizing the vicissitudes of life, increasing the pain for people already suffering.”
Worse, the very act of labeling and monitoring these individuals could deepen their alienation, further inflaming resentment. If state intervention manifests as harassment rather than support, it may not only fail to prevent future violence but could, in some cases, push those already on the brink over the edge.
State-controlled media has no time for examination of deeper problems. Each attack is framed as an isolated tragedy, disconnected from systemic issues. News reports are sanitized, social media posts deleted, and public discourse stifled. While this approach shields the government from immediate accountability, it deepens the gap between leaders and the public.
Lynette Ong, a political scientist specializing in authoritarianism at the University of Toronto, argues that fractured state-society relations and eroded trust have created fertile ground for frustration to manifest in alarming ways, including acts of desperation. “I expect China to be a society that is increasingly difficult to govern, with the possibility of rising violence,” she said. “Zero-COVID strained state-society relations and broke down trust between citizens and both the central government and grassroots agents.” According to Ong, violent acts—whether self-harm or targeted at others—often represent a form of venting against systemic challenges that remain unresolved.
For the Chinese Communist Party, the stakes are significant. Each “revenge on society” attack challenges the party’s carefully curated image of harmony and control, raising uncomfortable questions about deeper societal issues. These incidents may reflect growing disillusionment rooted in inequality, unmet expectations, and a weakening social compact—issues that cannot be addressed solely through surveillance and suppression.
The party faces a stark choice. It can double down on its control tactics, risking further alienation, or it can confront the uncomfortable truths behind these crises. Real reforms—addressing inequality, expanding mental health services, and restoring trust in institutions—are essential. Yet Xi’s administration has shown little appetite for meaningful change. Stability, for now, means preserving the status quo, even as cracks in the system continue to widen.
But the cost of inaction is growing. As grievances accumulate and remain unaddressed, isolated acts of violence may become more frequent, evolving from aberrations into a grim pattern of societal dysfunction. The state’s heavy-handed tactics, designed to suppress dissent and manage crises, risk creating an environment where desperation festers unchecked.

what has been happening in the world of motorsports?
to start with the most concerning and serious point: there has been a complaint to the FIA Compliance Officer and Ethics Committee when Ben Sulayem came out to say they won't be stepping into the allegations of Horner's workplace misconduct because they didn't receive any official complaints, another one came in a few days after (with a warning that media will get the information next) and apparently the victim handed in her own official complaint (as a reminder this comes after reports of Sulayem being investigated for trying to influence the race result and a circuit confirmation last year and allegedly also asking Max Verstappen to publicly support Horner)
Ben Sulayem has also been cleared off the allegations (both over the Saudi Arabia 2023 results overrule and Las Vegas GP intervence)
Guanyu will have his own short documentary called The First One (probably about being the first Chinese driver on the F1 grid)
Alex posted his own merch line, debuting on his app first
Williams will run Alex, Logan and Lia Block (and even James Vowles) at Goodwill - first time in an F1 car for both Lia and James
