Power companies in Brazil are reassessing their investment strategies in generation and redirecting funds to more conservative, predictable sectors due to an oversupply in the country. Other factors playing a role include significant price volatility, which undermines the viability of new renewable projects, and generation cuts imposed by the Operator of the National Electricity System (ONS) due to low demand.
This market instability, exacerbated by subsidies and inefficient fund allocation, has prompted companies to be more cautious. For instance, the French company Engie is no longer interested in investing in greenfield renewable energy generation projects, citing low electricity market prices deemed insufficient to justify starting projects from scratch.
CEO Eduardo Sattamini said Engie has increased its stake in other sectors, such as energy transmission, to achieve a balanced revenue stream. This segment is the safest in the industry, being fully regulated. The auction winner secures a 30-year contract indexed to the Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA), eliminating default risks. In this context, Engie is likely to pursue opportunities including acquiring contracted projects offering lower risk and better revenue predictability.
“To ensure long-term growth, it is key to efficiently manage the portfolio, maintaining a healthy balance between revenue sources and mitigating risks, especially in a volatile environment,” he states. Mr. Sattamini explained that Engie’s energy generation portfolio of 9.6 GW of 100% renewable installed capacity is primarily made up of hydropower and supplementary sources, such as wind and solar. “Additionally, we have transmission lines that support the distribution of energy from production centers to consumer hubs,” Mr. Sattamini said.
