Happy 6 months of Athena and I being on the road! My reflective thoughts: 1. Most people are good and want to help you, not hurt you. 2. Language is a barrier only if you let it be one. I’ve communicated with people each of us speaking our own language not knowing what the other said and yet we both understood each other. 3. Kaskade was right, the eyes are the window to the soul. They show intention, which is one of the most powerful traits. 4. New environments force extreme rapid growth that is painful, yet necessary. 5. Energy attracts similar energy. 6. A smile is an invitation and a gift that can be retracted as easily as it is given. 7. There are more strangers across the world that have similar mindsets like you. 8. Though some interactions are momentary, they affect and shift your character powerfully. I can probably list a thousand things, but those are the ones that come to mind. If you ask me what is my favorite thing is that I’ve experienced on this trip, I will give you the same response as I had on my Cali to Chicago trip: The People. Don’t fuckin let anyone tell you how to have cancer. And don’t you ever give up what you love for anything in this wretched, beautiful world. • I bought tickets to Costa Rica before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I used the permission that the doctors needed from me to start treatment as a bargaining chip to schedule chemotherapy for a week when I wasn’t due to travel. My oncologist was not pleased, but did raise an eyebrow and smiled, saying, “well played.” • I do not want my doctors to think that I do not take my treatment seriously. I emailed them while I was gone, saying I got there safely and I am okay. I never heard back, I thought they were mad at me! • Upon my return and at my next treatment, I was greeted by one of my nurses in tears, saying she told the other patients what I had done, and that I was such an inspiration. I had never expected that is a reaction that I would get from anyone through this process. My oncologist even said that now she wants to go, but will pass on the shark-diving. They were all so happy for me. My chemo nurse said never in her 32 years had she heard of someone going to a foreign country alone during treatment, until me. Couldn’t believe that either, but it is so. • #Live to fucking #Inspire.
