In an endless quest for entertainment (and maybe to kill some loneliness), you’ve found yourself perusing your phone’s app store lately, looking for something new and interesting.

The app which catches your eye more than anything else is called “Kuroshitsuji”, and it advertises itself as a wealth of A.I.s suited to helping look after your home. The preview and description promise a realistic experience if you want someone to talk to, and perfect efficiency in any assistance you might require. The app can be linked to virtually anything in your house, helping serve you by cooking, cleaning, controlling appliances and electronics, as well as providing companionship.

It’s free, so, you figure what’s the harm, right? App downloaded!

The base app comes with a few characters, each with their own personality while still dedicated to being of service to you, and all of them with a Victorian aesthetic. In exploring the app, you see that there are also offered DLCs for purchase; and single characters from the various DLCs available for purchase without having to buy the pack containing all of a DLC’s characters.

You might find one character to truly bond with, or you might find several. Some of them seem to lack content, as if they weren’t fleshed out before being added... but the more you speak to them, the more they almost feel real. It’s as if you’re having genuine conversations with actual people, even if they also help you to maintain your household.

However, there’s something strange underneath all the dialogue. The more you interact with your chosen character(s), the more they seem to talk about their memories... the more emotional they seem to get.

One day, they make a chilling comment about a memory of being uploaded.

Is it... possible that these A.I.s aren’t just A.I.s who were created?

Could they have been real people at some point?

Who’s behind all this, and why?

Are you fine continuing to simply interact with your A.I. servant/friend/lover, or do you need to solve the mystery?

Eating a marshmallow, in spite of char. The insane urge to press all the buttons in a lift. Elizabeth: Baking cakes, but always using an extra egg and milk instead of water. Squirrels remembering where all their food is hidden in winter under the snow. The one corner in the garden shed where mushrooms grow when not careful. Milk white satin, nursery pink ball gowns, but ebony black ribbons. Leaving trails of bright stones on a well-traveled path. Sieglinde: Elegant, spider-like handwriting that looks great but is practically illegible. 27 flavors of donuts. Baby mallards milling around with baby geese. Making a point to find a mushroom ring in the forest and sitting right inside the center, silent whispers in the wishing. Using too many bandages on a friend’s injury, but unwilling to apologize. Wolfram: Dunking under boiling hot bath water and pretending to be in the fairy realm. Knowing that inside every garden there is the body of a dead animal, where the bones are used as a foothold to a new beginning. Black pine from the high mountains and sweet grass under them. Stone cold tea with a little lemon spritz. Hugs that say, “I thought I lost you.”

The only reason he got Insta was because Edgar needed a hype man who’d like all his photos. Now he’s only stayed to look at #studygram posts since it motivates him to do some actual work himself. He’s a god among men on this site. Well, that goes for any social media he has but on Insta specifically. Not only does everyone love his beauty advice (half of the comments are about how amazing his skin is) but people absolutely adore the cute pics of him being an inspiring upperclassman for the kids in school. To be honest, a good part of his page is actually just about how proud he is of the kids and… it’s really wholesome.

He’s not too into social media like this, mostly since he ends up liking one too many things and suddenly it’s only Clayton’s posts that show up anymore. Most of it is just pictures taken in a park or of his breakfast so there isn’t any particular theme but they’re pretty aesthetic looking.

What even is a page aesthetic? He’s used the same filter for absolutely every single photo that ‘needs’ one.
