Kikkin’ It with Kixx

The long-awaited(?) post where I talk about the specifics of the Kikkin’ It Rehab Center. This includes technical things like costs and credentials, as well as what I feel is implied about the actual rehabilitation techniques (as well as some stuff I’ve just kinda extrapolated from it). General note: yes, Rikki is my fave character but I do not agree with everything I talk about here. I feel like that’d be obvious but I’m just gonna cover my bases. Rikki is a terrible sobriety spokesperson.

With that outta the way, let’s get into it:

This first part is copied from old notes from another doc I made months ago; this is more technical stuff (costs, staff, etc.):

Opening a rehab center in California is costly. Obviously. In general, it can run anywhere from 100K to 2mil. Considering that the Kikkin’ It Rehab Center is implied to be a more high-end, celebrity rehab center, this ups the cost even more. At the very least, I’d say Rikki dropped a good 1.5 to 2.5 mil on this from the start. He definitely had the money to do so, though I like to think Nikki helped him with the costs as well.

Again, since this is implied to be a celebrity rehab center, I’d imagine the actual price to stay there is anywhere from 10k to 30k a month. Also, because it’s so exclusive, I don’t think the center takes in more than probably around 30 people at a time.

It’s never stated “officially” how many rehab centers there are. I think there’s probably only the one in Los Angeles, but there are smaller buildings they own that are used as meeting centers (the large main building is for housing and amenities). Specifically I think the building that we see Rikki holding that meeting in that Rockzo speaks at used to be a club owned by Rikki. But I’ll save the headcanon elaboration for my webcomic >:]

A fun fact: technically you don’t really need any special license to open a rehab center in California. You don’t need special credentials as long as you have a staff (licensed therapists, counselors, nurses, etc). With that in mind, I doubt Rikki has any sort of qualifications and instead just has a staff that runs things for him. I do think he helped write the basic guidelines of their practices, though, because his name is plastered all over this place. He owns it, he can do what he wants. And it explains a lot about himself when you actually listen to what’s being said. But more on that in a minute.

And to make that last part clearer, I think while he doesn’t have any sort of license, he is still absolutely leading the meetings and all that.

As far as the actual practices go, I’m basing what I imagine his general rehabilitation model is like on both more religion-oriented Alcoholics Anonymous/12-Step principles (worth noting that though AA was founded by a Christian group, it is non-denominational, though some groups do have a more overt religious edge to them), as well as the beliefs of famous celebrity rehab centers, specifically the infamous Passages Malibu.

I do think he uses a spiritual edge to his work because preying on people’s spirituality is a very easy way to get people to do what you want. With that in mind, regardless of what he may actually believe, I think the Kikkin’ It Rehab Center works based on the mindset that alcoholism is not a disease and rather a moral failing (which, in my opinion, is complete bullshit but that’s besides the point). I have a very long headcanon about Rikki and his relationship with faith which could be its own separate tangent but to sum up: I think he was raised very strictly Catholic and has a complicated relationship with religion as an adult. That said, he knows the power one can have if they can use religion as a means of manipulation, so he uses it in his rehab.

In general, though, I think it follows a pretty basic 12 step program when you get right down to it.

So, back to what I was talking about a minute ago with the guidelines/practices of this place. Have you ever actually listened to what’s being said? Rikki claims that the key to getting sober is identifying the problem, no denying that. But what’s really striking is what Rockzo says at the meeting before Sobertown.

Rockzo: “I have clarity now, and that’s an amazing thing, I tell you. The key to getting clean is killing that part of you that was hurting you. You gotta kill that part of yourself.”

So like. Do we see the implications of this? Rikki is straight up telling his clients that they have to kill parts of themselves in order to even begin to get sober; again, going back to my point that the Kikkin’ It Rehab Center goes by the “addiction is a moral failing” principle. And if you’re wondering how that applies to Snakes n’ Barrels: Pickles was identified as the problem, so in order to “kill” the thing that was holding them back, they did the next best thing: issued a restraining order and reunited without him.

This is partly gonna turn into a Rikki analysis, which is inevitable with me, but I do think this idea of having to effectively “kill” parts of yourself says a lot about Rikki as a person. We know from watching him in the episode that he is so incredibly miserable, and that’s part of his motivation (“Because if I have to be sober, then I’ll make everybody sober, and they’ll have to live in the hell on Earth that I do.”) for running a rehab center at all. And when you think about it in this context, it makes perfect sense he feels this way. If he’s not only promoting a way of “healing” that includes talks of killing parts of yourself, but also actively trying to make his clients and the world around him feel as terrible as possible…yeah of course he’s miserable? I think this mindset is definitely reflective of some personal feelings on his own self, that he can really no longer recognize himself because that part of him is “dead.” He was his own worst problem.

I hope this makes some stuff a bit clearer about Rikki and why I definitely characterize his sobriety as being more of a genuine downward spiral than like. A new, healing chapter of his life. Yes, he absolutely needs to be sober if he was drinking so much that he has a severely damaged liver before 40, but I think his own personal ways of trying to make himself better were already poisoned from the start, so it made this journey to being clean more of like. A destruction of his own identity. This goes back to a lot of my own characterizations of Rikki (pre- and post- sobriety) where I think he gets a lot of his self-worth based on what others think of him. So in his mind it’s like. Oh people don’t like Rikki the rockstar anymore?? Ok he’s dead now. Do they like Rikki the SOBER rockstar?? They do???? Great, I’ll do anything to keep that perception of me in their heads.

Chicago PD's Characters and the Role of Reform: an Analysis (???)

Hi everyone! The finales of One Chicago aired a couple of weeks ago by now but I've been preparing this post in my head ever since PD's finale aired. I wanted to talk/write about each character's (and maybe even the writers') interpretation of police reform and how it affects the plot. This will also talk about police reform in general. Before I start, I'd just like to state that this will be a bit long and probably biased since a lot of it is influenced by my own views on reform. I'm not interested in debating people on the internet, just putting out interesting perspective on an interesting TV show. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this and feel free to add thoughts of your own— as long as they’re respectful!

Chicago PD's handling of reform in this season was far from perfect but I did enjoy a few things they did with it. We had Kevin, a POC, stand up and fight back when even the people closest to him tried to shut him down. I did have some issue with the way they reduced Kevin's entire set of beliefs/morals to something so trivial and disrespectful as a "woke card" but I think the writers chose to do that on purpose to show how blinded white people can be sometimes. It's more the characters using that term, not the writers, which I thought was a good move since in both situations— Kevin v. Voight in 8x02 and Kevin v. Adam in 8x16– they made sure it's clear that Kevin is in the right. Voight may have been frustrated and Adam may have been spiraling over losing Kim (love me some #Burzek), but Kevin was still in the right. If only we could have some more varied representation on this show! That way, Kevin wouldn’t have to be used as the emotional punching bag all the time for these white characters and their misplaced frustrations with the system (added onto their personal frustrations which fluctuate on a episode-to-episode basis).

Now, onto the view on reform because this is where it gets interesting. I'm going to go ahead and say something that might be controversial: I think the majority of conflicts in this season have come from a gross misinterpretation of the concept of reform. This is especially highlighted in the finale when we see Adam saying he should be able to change/bend/break the rules to save someone he loves. It's also shown in the case with Miller's son Darrell and how they need to break the rules to save him, the case in 8x11 that Hailey considers breaking the rules for. It could even be loosely applies to 8x06 when Jay feels the need to break the rules only slightly in order to serve proper justice for their victim's father. Proper justice, in this case for Jay, being mercy towards the father and doing what's right in Jay's mind. Notice a common theme? These characters who are against reform (I know Voight was so good most of the season but he still falls into that category because of the first and last two episodes) all have one thing in common: the way they view reform. Voight, Hailey, and Adam, somewhere along the line (in my opinion), have all come to think of reform as a social push to get police officers to adhere to the proper guidelines when in reality, that's only a small fraction of an otherwise complex concept. Reform isn't all about getting police to follow the rules-- reform in and of itself is recognizing that the rules that are set into place aren't always effective. There are rules that are discriminatory, rules that are bureaucratic nonsense, rules that disproportionately affect specific groups of people, and rules that create roadblocks to solving real problems. Hell, the original police systems in North America especially were created to persecute minorities and maintain military power over citizens. The need for reform is referencing a larger systemic issue and getting police officers to follow the most basic procedures is just the tip of the iceberg. I don't want to get too much into the principles behind reform here because I am no expert. I recognize that because I am white I benefit from these rules/systems put into place so my voice shouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but I do think the majority of the tensions in this season of Chicago PD stem from the extreme oversimplification of reform. It surprised me too when I thought about it because they've managed to explore the grey areas/more complex aspects of it, but I think the writers are intentionally making that decision which makes it really interesting.

Throughout the season, I couldn’t help but feel that these characters considered reform as the push from the public to adhere to guidelines-- as they should, obviously-- but while ignoring the more nuanced principles of reform such as asking themselves questions like: is what I'm doing truly helping the communities we've sworn to serve and protect? Are the solutions us cops in Intelligence are offering permanent solutions? Should we be rethinking our principles of justice to be less retributive and more procedural-- or even more restorative?

This is all in reference to the characters, of course, not the writers. We have Voight, Hailey, and Adam resisting reform because they don’t see value in following the rules. But reform, in its purest form, is recognizing that the rules need changing, which is why it’s so interesting to see the “opposing side” against it even though they also believe the rules aren’t helping them. So I think it's really good and interesting how the writers have written these characters as having very complex and layered discussions/arguments about reform and about justice while still doing that. Because their contempt for the rules comes from a place of wanting to carry out justice, just like Kevin and all the others who push for reform, but they’re motivated by ideals closer to retributive justice and using their position of power to exact a more personal form of justice. Because of Hailey, Adam, and Voight’s more personal and intimate views of justice, their solutions always feel short-term. For example, Voight murdering suspects, bashing in cars, etc. This is all stuff that creates a temporary fix but their passion towards justice makes them care more about the personal, emotional release that kind of justice brings than the actual, long-term change. This is especially shown in that one scene where Hailey tells Jay the story about how a clerical error made an offender walk, which she sort of views as a reason why breaking the rules should be allowed whereas Kevin would view that as a reason why the rules need changing. Again, short-term vs. long-term.

This is not to say that Hailey, Voight, and Adam are evil, obviously. They're complicated, but they're far from evil. (Well, the jury’s still out on Voight. Haha!) What this show is portraying, however, is how the ideas of reform can be fleeting and temporary and all-around fickle in the minds of these characters when they reach a certain breaking point. They're able to throw this aside because they're all white, so it doesn't affect them personally. But right off the bat in season 8 we've seen it affect Kevin professionally AND personally in every single way. Others are almost viewing it as a social trend or a push to be a rule-follower though which is why both Adam and Voight, when put under emotional distress, are so easily able to downplay Kevin's push for doing things the right way. (Even though, really, he's asking for the bare minimum here of following the rules and not killing people.) Kevin, ever the conscience of the group, doesn’t put up with it and keeps people in check which can be extremely aggravating when you’re in a very emotional state and want to let your emotions lead you on a rampage. Hence, this is the root cause of the majority of tensions between the unit— in season 8 especially.

Anyway, this is all to say that I think this season of Chicago PD has done quite a lot in terms of portraying reform and the need for systemic change while still staying true to their characters and delving into how their privelege has led to them misinterpreting reform. Which leads to the portraying of some fairly corrupt policing, but never condoning it. At the very least, they show how it's less important for these characters since they all have a breaking point where reform becomes moot whereas for a black man like Kevin, it's more firmly ingrained into him. That’s a concept that is all too common in the real world, and one I appreciated that they represented even though some things weren’t so great.

important question that's been bugging me for a while. since hypmic plays in a female powered society.. does that make everything like..our world but reverse? so that guys are more often oppressed and girls are more likely to be predators, taking what happened to hifumi (like men are more likely to us) and stuff like that? (or like if we imagine everything genderbent and apply our society to that) sorry I hope this is not too triggering. love your work!

This is a delicate question. I am going to put my answer below a cut. Topics included: sexual predators, misogyny, assault, kidnapping, the mistreatment of male sexual assault victims

I don’t think that I’m necessarily the best person to answer this or examine this. I’m not educated enough in this particular topic. However, I have tried to give it as much thought and respect as I can.

The Question of Female Predators

This is a very complex topic. Female predators are already not uncommon in the world we live in, so I guess the question of whether there would be more or less female predators depends on what factors contribute to people becoming a predator.

I could be entirely wrong about this, but I think one factor that causes a lot of fear of being preyed upon is the size difference between most AMAB people and AFAB people. Obviously, there are millions of exceptions to this rule, but AMAB people generally tend to be taller, more muscular, and broader than AFAB people. The majority of AMAB people are also men (whereas the majority of AFAB people are women), so on average, an altercation between an untrained man and an untrained woman is not likely to end in the woman’s favor. This isn’t going to change in the world of Hypnosis Mic.

It’s the societal factors that would change. The Center for Hope and Safety says, “A sexual offender generally believes he is better than other people and so does not have to follow the rules that ordinary people do.” This is a stance the Party of Words elevates. The Party constantly practices “othering” and promotes themselves as an elite group. Only they are allowed to enter a certain area. Only they are allowed to write the name of their ward in kanji, whereas every other location must use the foreign-looking katakana. ARB events frequently feature Party members shoving characters around from place to place with no explanation, as questions are not allowed. Only the Party can know what’s going on. Using this as a guideline, I think it’s very possible for predators already within the Party to use this as an excuse for being a predator. “Men are worthless, so I can abuse them.”

You could argue that the Party is founded on the principles of safety for women and non-violence, but the Party is also very hypocritical. Its promises of safety are only for the party itself; it puts on painful gladiator battles to turn a profit and purposefully cause infighting to keep the Party safe. Ramuda even suggests (and I have no reason to disbelieve him) in TDD 12 that they have a stockpile of weapons as well. The Party doesn’t care for anything but itself and staying in power.

So yes, predators within the Party are probably more likely to abuse their power, but would the shift towards a female-dominated society create more female predators? That’s a much harder question to answer. I am not remotely equipped to speak on what causes someone to become a predator. I do, however, think that societal norms can enable predators or foster mindsets of fright against certain groups.

In the world that we live in, it is very possible for men in certain areas to sexually assault or otherwise mistreat a woman and be applauded by their communities. Think of online communities such as “The Red Pill” or “Men Going Their Own Way”. Such communities believe that women deserve this mistreatment, and while these are very extreme examples, this same mindset permeates a lot of global societies. Even on a small scale, a lot of men tend to make casual sexist comments because we were raised with the notion of this being socially appropriate. And there’s the issue - it’s inappropriate, but it’ll continue to be socially appropriate as long as we don’t continue to challenge ourselves, challenge our friends, and raise our children with better standards of accountability and respect. These social changes do not happen in the blink of an eye, and I highly doubt that a single three years with the Party of Words in power would change that.

Similarly, a lot of girls in our societies are taught (both consciously and subconsciously) to defer to their male peers or even to fear men in positions of power. Once again, unlearning this and teaching future generations more positive standards does not happen overnight. I doubt that most women in the Hypmic universe are able to make radical shifts of thinking and acting over the course of three years. Furthermore, I doubt that many men are really taking the Party’s misandristic words to heart. None of the main characters seem particularly bothered by Ichijiku calling them barbarous fools on the regular; it’s an annoyance, sure, but that’s it. We’d have to see the Party in power for a much longer time to witness any large societal changes.

Additionally, the world inside Chuuouku and the world without are quite different. While Chuuouku boasts state-of-the-art architecture and technology, the rest of Japan gets by like normal, if perhaps in a bit shabbier fashion than to be expected for this futuristic world. Men and women seem to still fit into stereotypical gender roles in much the same way that they do today. Doppo’s bosses are all men; the majority of doctors we see are men, and the nurses tend to be women. While some of Jirou’s female classmates seem to be especially assertive, male and female students get along in the same way as we would expect to see in our world. Women are still kidnapped and trafficked by primarily male yakuza. The former military looks to be exclusively made up of men. Progress moves slowly, so I think we can assume that the Japan outside of Chuuouku is approximately our modern Japan.

One of the major issues in examining this topic is that we see so little female-male interaction in regards to sex or romance. Ramuda and Hifumi are the only characters (that I can think of off the top of my head) who have any on-screen sexually/romantically charged interactions with women, but probably because this is a series largely marketed towards women, these interactions never go beyond light, impersonal flirting. To really take a look at how predators and assault may be featured in the Hypmic universe, we would need a much larger sample size. That being said, I’d still like to examine two case studies: Nemu and Hifumi.

Nemu

The two driving forces of Nemu’s character are her rejection of violence and her desire to have personal strength. The first of these is probably rooted in her childhood, from living with an abusive father, witnessing his violent murder, and witnessing the subsequent suicide of her mother. Samatoki doesn’t appear to have any resources for dealing with his own processing of these events, and he turns to violence and emotional outbursts as a way to channel his feelings. This violence continues to wear on Nemu, but she can still withstand it under normal circumstances up until the moment she is kidnapped.

Nemu cites her kidnapping as an example of her weakness, when in reality, it is an exhibition of anything but weakness. She remains calm throughout the entire ordeal, comforts Jirou and Saburou and keeps them hopeful, throws her shoe at Genchou, and offers him to cut her fingers off if that means the others will be spared. Nemu isn’t weak – she is a hero. She is a seventeen year old girl who lost both parents at a young age and has witnessed horrifically traumatic situations, yet she keeps her head during a hostage situation and acts with courage in order to keep everyone else safe.

Nemu calls herself weak not because she thinks she’s weak for anything she did during the situation, but because the situation happened to her in the first place. She is victim blaming herself for violent assault. This isn’t a logical position, but it’s a very understandable position for someone with her background. Unfortunately, Samatoki doesn’t have the knowledge or resources in order to help her process her trauma safely, and his own coping mechanisms only set her off further.

Nemu isn’t mentally weak, but she is very emotionally vulnerable. Even without the Party’s hypnosis, an offer from the Party would be too tantalizing to ignore. They can promise her a world in which suddenly she has the power over everyone else and where violence is not practiced. An offer like this is impossible for her to ignore. Even though the Party are the ones putting her in jeopardy again, they implicitly promise her that she can never be hurt again. For a young, brave, powerful girl holding in so much pain, that promise is everything she’s ever wanted.

As mentioned before, the Party doesn’t care about stopping violence. In fact, it encourages infighting among its civilians. If Nemu were not in an emotionally vulnerable position, she could see that and reject the Party’s offer, but that’s exactly why the Party targets her and not any of her peers. Imagine how many other young girls in similar situations fall prey to the same trap. These girls need healing and positive environments, but they are fed propaganda instead.

Hifumi

I don’t talk about this much because it’s a very uncomfortable subject for me, but the way Hifumi is depicted is a real tragedy.

We don’t know the details of what this particular girl did to Hifumi, but we do know that it continues to impact him over ten years later. We know that Hifumi developed his coping strategy on his own, seemingly without professional help, and that without it, he can’t begin to live even an approximation of a normal life. The illustrations of him encountering a woman show him hiding, cowering with his neck covered, or crying. He looks to be in genuine fear of losing his life. Consider being this afraid of half of the population and how frequently he must encounter women in his daily life: on the street, in the grocery store, on public transportation. Without the jacket, Hifumi’s life is a nightmare.

And yet the canon source material frames it as a joke. The humurous background music in ARB and Hifumi’s exaggerated gestures in the manga show that his fear and discomfort is a punchline. This would definitely not be a funny gag with the genders reversed (a woman sobbing in fear and running away every time she sees a man), so it is a travesty that this is the stance the authors continue to take.

The world we live in is, generally speaking, not kind to its male assault victims. Misogynistic attitudes create an environment in which it is shameful for men to admit that they were assaulted, especially by women. It should not be a punchline when one human being hurts another, and it is wrong and sexist beyond all belief to perpetuate the idea that women can’t be cruel, violent, and manipulative just as much as anyone else can.

I would like to hope that Hifumi’s case isn’t indicative of all Hypmic universe male assault victims, but I don’t think that’s the case. Hifumi definitely has access to mental health resources, considering that his roommate does, but there is no evidence that Hifumi has ever come forward to ask for help about this issue. This is probably a combination of Hifumi’s internal shame and an unsupportive environment. While Doppo does help Hifumi navigate daily life around women, Doppo’s facial expressions suggest he considers the matter a nuisance. He threatens to take away or withhold the suit when Hifumi’s coping method annoys him, and otherwise doesn’t seem to take Hifumi’s distress seriously. Jakurai appears to be more supportive, but he doesn’t ever offer additional help or resources to Hifumi beyond what Hifumi already has. In fact, the majority of Jakurai’s interest in the subject seems to be around examining Hifumi like a case rather than as a person needing assistance.

It’s also probably a result of the faux macho attitudes that are rampant within the Hypmic universe. Hypmic men are bound by a multitude of ridiculous expectations that I always feel like an idiot translating. “Men don’t cry.” “Men don’t get stuck feeling disappointed.” Absolute nonsense. Men can and will do anything, just like any other group of people. It’s far more productive to encourage men to be their best selves, respectful and helpful to themselves and everyone else, than to feed into this sort of behavior which implies the hideously false “men can’t be assaulted”.

This all results in Hifumi living a double life and only being able to remove his façade in the safety of his own apartment or with his two friends. That’s a miserable existence, and while Hifumi appears to be cheerful enough, it’s sickening to see that this is supposed to be comedic.

The Question of Male Oppression

The Party of Words does institute laws to oppress men, but this oppression is fairly ridiculous. Yotsutsuji says that men are taxed at a higher rate than women and that men aren’t allowed into certain areas (such as Chuuouku, I presume). Despite these challenges, the majority of Hypmic universe men seem to lead pretty normal lives. As mentioned above, the professional fields still appear to be dominated by men, and male-on-female violence doesn’t seem much different from how it is in our contemporary world. These laws aren’t making a significant change in male lives, so they must be made to impact women. Yet these are token impacts only, as they don’t in any way actually make the lives for non-Chuuouku women any better. By making this an “us against them” deal, the Party is able to make more women sympathetic to their cause and cause more infighting (thus distracting people from “us against the Party”) without actually having to make positive changes for anyone.

These laws also aren’t the reason why rebel groups exist. Consider the motivations each character gives in TDD 11. Ichirou mentions a lack of central law and regulations making it difficult to keep loved ones safe. The infighting that the Party promotes via its rap battles allows for power-hungry individuals like Mozuku to take over whole areas and instate whatever rules they want, no matter the cost to the citizens. Samatoki is frustrated by being directed to fight when he can’t see a good cause; similarly, Ramuda is concerned about the effects of the fighting on the neighborhoods they pass through. Even with non-lethal weapons, a country in constant conflict is not one in which its citizens can prosper. Jakurai is concerned about inequalities between Chuuouku and the rest of the country. He mentions in FP/M 15 (which we’ll have up in a few days for you to see for yourself) that he’ll use the prize money from winning the DRB to provide medical care for locations that the Party can’t or won’t supply with aid. Later in the chapter, he drives away from the spectacular, futuristic city of Chuuouku back into a Tokyo marked with graffiti and squalor. Even the male citizens don’t care about how they’re treated as compared to their female counterparts; they care that everyone is suffering together under the Party’s poor governing.

The Party has never sought to oppress men and elevate women. The Party’s goal is to elevate itself and oppress everyone else. The gender inequality is as much of a diversionary tactic as the Division Rap Battle.

Just how can a parent or even a kid choose the finest educational toys to the kiddies within their own lives? Can the little one want it? Can it accomplish the purposes that it has been purchased? And is it a fantastic value for that cost?

The very first guideline that grandparents and parents should remember is to purchase educational toys which are age appropriate. The temptation is almost overwhelming to purchase kids, particularly babies, toys which reflect the interests of their bridesmaids. By way of instance, how often have you ever seen dads have been sports enthusiasts provide a young child a little bit of sports equipment which has been far past the youngster's capability touse. Broke the Curse Challenge

So here comes Adeline. Our cursed Princess of this story/challenge.

I did found this challenge semi-accidentally in Mod The Sims. The author of this challenge is briannas421, so thanks for this go to her.

Somehow I liked this when there was such a clear Shrek/Fiona setup, so I decided to try this. Although I had and still have little difficulty with the rules, firstly because of the language barrier and secondly because the guidelines / rules for this challenge have not been updated in a couple of years.

After this challenge has been put in Mod The Sims, the game has had new updates, add-ons, patches and packs, so some of the stuff has changed.

Sure, the basic principles are quite clear, so I'm using them as a guideline for this play and, if necessary, done a bit of your own rules hampered the so-called game, lest it would be so easy.

The story basically goes that there is a rich influential clan (everyone is free to decide whether they are noble or royal to the habit) whose distant ancestor manages to acquire his own stupidity over the family with the curse by which heirs have had only sons generation after generation.

Until finally, the current couple will have their first girl child. Oh, good luck ... or well, maybe not, because the little baby girl doesn't look quite ordinary.

Of course, parents love their little princess despite this not so charming appearance. That’s what they at least claim when they lock their princess in a distant tower, far from the proximity of people. Reportedly for the princess's own best.

Oh, that curse. Well the first girl in the family will be a monster until she gets the first kiss of love. But there is only time until the girl’s 25th birthday, after which the curse becomes permanent.

Well then our princess has lived in her tower and now it is 25 days to her 25th birthday. That is, there is no time for her to become permanently less beautiful.

With this in mind, the princess’s parents have been looking for potential suitor candidates that are surprisingly hard to find. Either they are not interested in saving the princess or they have, through something, learned the truth about the princess.

Very superficial men, the queen said disappointed.

But in the end, the parents have found five candidates. They’re not quite happy with these, but when no better is available, they have to settle for this top five.

And those candidates who aren’t quite the best possible quality, but when no better one is available, so parents have grabbed this last straw.

Zed, a young unmarried prince. Very arrogant and malicious. He does not care about love, but wants riches and power. With that in mind, he has decided to conquer the princess, even if this should not be the case.

Larry, the young prince, too. Maybe not as vicious as Zed, but still staggering, vicious and also has something other than true love in his mind. He longs for an easy path to the throne because his own family kicked him out, and so he doesn’t get the throne after his father but it goes to another slightly steeper relative. In addition, Larry enjoys malicious jokes.

Fabian. He is a noble and quite a woman. She has heard of the princess and that this would be a real beauty. He doesn’t seek true love either, but wants to make the princess one conquest among many.

Conrad. This man isn’t quite the binding type either, but is determined to see how this progresses. He’s more of a partyer who just wants to have fun. Conrad would be happy if he got a princess, but he wouldn’t be sorry either, even if he was left without a princess. I wish I had more time to have fun.

Edmund. Edmund is the kindest man in this five. He is really looking for true love and just wants to help the princess. Admittedly, he is also the only one in the gang who is not noble, let alone royal. Which is why these superior snobs are bullying constantly Edmund. But Edmund does not allow this to disturb himself, but does what he should, even if he is not a nobleman.

Edmud really is very kind and nice man and also very shy. But not a coward. I can’t say same for the other suitors.

So here were the suitors. I have already played a bit and Adeline has twice been on so-called dates with all her suitors.

So far, it looks like Conrad is in the lead, second comes Edmund, then Fabian, Larry and last Zed. But let’s see now, there would still be at least three dates or more until we see how it goes.

And so the characteristics of those suitors have been chosen according to this list:

1. Evil / malicious

2. Mischievous

3. Romantic

4. Fun

5. Friendly

Of course, I made the situation more difficult by choosing a feature for everyone that is not conducive to improving the situation. For example, Edmund is shy in addition to his good qualities. That trait was loaded, but I thought it suited him well.

Resources for Newbies

I got a nice email from somebody with some questions, and I typed out this whole long answer, and then I was like - let’s not ever have to type all this out again! So here’s what they asked, and my answer:

I am a first-time writer of children's books and I have about 45-ish pages drafted of a manuscript so far. I anticipate it being around 80 or so pages when I finish, and the intended audience is early chapter-book readers. As a first-time writer, I know basically nothing about how publishing works, and I find it a little intimidating. I am hoping you could help me with a few questions? I have so many, but the three that stand out as the most important for me right now are:

1. How can I attract the attention of a literary agent? Do agents still accept cold pitches these days, or do you prefer to have writers referred to you?

2. Should I completely finish my manuscript before trying to find an agent, or does that matter?

3. Is it proper etiquette to share parts of the manuscript when you send a pitch letter, or to wait until you hear back from an interested agent?

I don't mind answering questions, though I'm going to point you toward some resources where you can get a lot more answers than I can probably give in a quick email! As to your questions though:

1. You can attract the attention of a literary agent by having a killer pitch and a great book. Most agents I know absolutely take "cold" queries - the majority of clients do come in this way. Of course if you HAVE a referral from somebody the agent knows well and trusts, super cool - but you don't NEED that. (A referral from a rando is actually worse than no referral - I get fake "referrals" all the time where the person says that so-and-so recommended me - -and it's either somebody that I know for a fact does NOT know who the heck I am -- like, no, I don't believe that Stephen King told you to email me! -- or else somebody that I don't know who the heck THEY are -- either way it looks very suspect.)

2. For a novel or a kids book, you 100% need a finished book. You should finish it, then get critique partners or second readers and try and "self edit" as much as you can. The manuscript should be in as good a shape as you can make it on your own. (Adult nonfiction is a little different, then you need a robust proposal with a sample - but that's another story). Not to freak you out AT ALL - but most agents get hundreds of queries a week and can take on only a few clients a YEAR. So... you really should make sure your stuff is clean, tight and ready for prime-time.

3. What you share depends on what the agent asks for - every agency might have different submission guidelines (which you should read carefully and follow, of course!) -- but MOST say something like, you should have a query letter, and the first ten pages or so of the manuscript pasted in (not as an attachment).

As for your book in particular - I'm curious what you mean when you say "early chapter book readers" -- Do you mean what I'd call an early reader (aka, those thin books like "I can Read" series, Frog and Toad etc, for 4-6 year olds who are just becoming readers) -- or what I'd call a chapter book (aka, those series books like Magic Tree House for 6-8 year olds) -- or what I'd call a middle grade (aka, a regular novel for 8-12 year olds)?

It would be a good idea for you, I think, to not think about the manuscript in terms of PAGES, but rather in terms of WORD COUNT. Why? Because in this category, word count is pretty important, and it's unclear to me based on what you've said if you're gearing your book properly. For beginning readers, there are "rules" of sorts regarding length and readability, and it's important that you know them! So here are some things to know as you are getting into the world of kids books!

* "Comp Titles" -- you will hear this a lot - it means comparative titles, aka, the kinds of books that are most like your book in terms of audience and where they would be on the bookshelf. I'd suggest going to the bookstore (if you can in covid-times!) and perusing the shelves and figuring out what SEEMS LIKE the kind of books you are trying to write. Then -- figure out where THEY land in terms of word count and readability. Here's a tool you can use to look up most kids books: https://www.arbookfind.com -- and there are "readability calculators" online too, where you can plug in some of your text and it will tell you what grade level you are writing at -- if you're trying to write a book for second graders and it reads like a college thesis - that's a problem!

Legit agents NEVER ask you to pay them "reading fees" or "editorial fees" or anything else - we ONLY get paid commission when we sell your book.

* SCBWI - The Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators has a ton of AMAZING resources for new writers -- there are huge national and regional conferences, yes, but also free local meetups just about everywhere in the country and even around the world (I've been to ones in Scotland and Paris - true story!) -- as well as online stuff -- there are a ton of classes, you can find critique groups and such, their newsletter/magazine has GREAT info about everything to do with children's publishing -- basically, if you are really serious and want to be a professional children's book author, you should look into their offerings and perhaps joining. https://www.scbwi.org

* Facebook - if you are on facebook, you can search and there are a ton of kids book groups - KidLit411 is a group that I know that the moderators are actually smart and know about stuff, and there is some good info. Fair warning: It's FACEBOOK, so there are also a lot of ding-dongs around, too.

Building Nico Minoru in D&D

I was actually thinking of building a different Marvel character using D&D 5e rules but then I realized this would, in theory, be a very simple build and also still very challenging because, well, we’re doing magic and magic in D&D is a lot of stuff. So why won’t we start with someone who can help us keep it relatively simple?

So first we need to decide what we want from this build. We need a wide variety of magic spells but also something that can reflect what happens if she breaks the “one word per spell” rule. We also need a magic staff that we can use in combat and finally a way for her to be the dean mother for all the other Runaways

As before, builds I do are inspired by an awesome job Tulok the Barbarian does building characters on his youtube channel and I tend to stick to some of his principles. For one, we will be using standard points array for Ability Scores - 15, 14, 13, 12, 10 and 8. If your DM would have you roll or point buy adjust the results to the below guidelines.

Our main stat is Charisma, not only will it be responsible for our casting but also because Nico is well-liked by her peers even at her angstier and grumpier. Constitution will follow, Nico has to cut herself for her spells to work, after all. Dexterity next, since she has shown some acrobatic skills in combat here and there. Then Intelligence, she is smarter than your average bear, as they say. Our lowest stats are Strength, since we don’t need it, and Wisdom, as Nico is has a reputation of being too trusting and making decisions driven more by emotions than cold reason.

Our points array should look like this: STR: 8 DEX: 13 CON: 14 INT: 12 WIS: 10 CHA: 15

For Race (which is D&D’s outdated way to say species) Nico is a human, so we’ll go with Variant Human. Variant Human get +1 to two Ability Scores of your choice, I recommend Charisma and Dexterity with the above array but it may be different for you - just remember even numbers are good numbers. We also get a free skill proficiency, take Acrobatics, and a feat. War Caster gives you a number of utilities - when you take damage and need a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration on a spell, you have an advantage on that roll (meaning you roll twice and pick better result), you can perform somatic components of a spell even if your both hand are occupied with a weapon or a shield and when an enemy provokes an attack of opportunity from you, you can instead cast a spell as long as it only has one action casting time and targets one creature.

For Background, I’d pick the closest to a runaway - Urchin. It gives you proficiency with Stealth and Sleight of Hand, but I would customize it and change the latter for Deception, disguise kit and thieves’ tools and a City Secrets feature, that allows you to travel twice as fast between any two locations in a city, at least when not in combat.

Now to the Class Levels. For our first level, we will start off with Sorcerer. We get proficiency with Daggers, darts, slings, quarterstaffs, light crossbows, Charisma and Constitution saving throws and two skills, I would choose Persuasion and Intimidation.

Before we get into spellcasting, we will focus on Sorcerous Bloodline. And there is one that seems almost tailor-made for Nico - Wild Magic. It gives us a very climactic ability - whenever Nico casts a spell of level 1 or higher, you roll a d20. At natural 1 you get to roll a Wild Magic Surge table ad have a random effect happen. While it is admittingly not very optimized for combat-oriented games it is the best way to reflect Nico breaking “one spell, one word” rule. Just have it that you first tell you DM what you cast, then roll and on nat 1 roleplay a failure. Plus it is a ton of fun and you can make it even more unpredictable if you add some sort of custom table for wild magic effects, like this one here I just found today.

You also get Tides of Chaos. You can choose to gain an advantage on an attack roll, ability check or saving throw. You can use this ability once and get it back after a long rest or whenever you roll on Wild Magic Surge table.

Now for the spells. How it works is that you have a number of spell known and every level you learn a new spell and can replace one you know with another. You get a number of spell slots each day and when you cast a spell you burn out one spell slot of an appropriate level and you cannot know spells of level higher than your higher spell slots. It is sadly more limited than Wizard who just learns the spells but it is much more reflective of Nico as a character. Dark magic is not something she learned, like Doctor Strange, it is her legacy but also an inherently chaotic force she struggles to control. She represents the unskilled but strong type of magic user, as opposed to Strange who has next to no raw power but incredible skill and knowledge.

You may feel a limited number of spells known clashes with Nico not being able to cast the same spell twice but there are ways around it in roleplay itself. Agree with your DM to describe a slightly different way the same spell works each time, maybe a spell that once held an enemy in place did it by paralysis, next time by a tentacle and another time arms of the dead rose from the ground to grab them? You can also operate on rules closer to A-Force, where Nico gets to cast the same spells using different words.

Also, mechanically if a spell allows a target a saving throw, difficulty for it is 8+ Your Charisma Modifier + Your Proficiency Bonus. If it requires you to make an attack, the attack modifier is said Proficiency Bonus + Charisma Modifier.

As for spell themselves, you get two level 1 spells and 4 Cantrips - minor spells that do not burn your spell slots when used. Nico’s problem is that she is versitile - she can do near anything she wants, meaning there is little point in declaring you to take specific spells. There are many great options in spells and I do not plan of going through each and every single one of them, because this post would be a novel. I will, however, list for every level some good options in the offensive, defensive, control and utility spells and let you make choices which are most the kind your take on Nico would use. I’m not your mom and casters in D&D are versatile, go wild, experiment, pick spells YOUR Nico would use.

Anyway, I will list all most fitting spells of that level and whenever I mention you get a new spell, go back and refer to this. Also, if I will be referring to a spell “scaling” with you it means there are ways to boost it up as you advance in levels, usually by casting it from a higher spell slot. Each such spell has that mentioned in the description.

Cantrips:

Offensive: Booming Blade (which can also make it harder for your enemy to move), Shocking Grasp or Green Flame Blade all let you make an attack with an additional effect; Create Bonefire can double as “never have to worry about making a campfire for the night” spell; Infestation has a minor control effect and it is pretty terrifying.

Defensive: Blade Ward is great because it can give you damage resistance, which will be useful even at higher levels.

Control: None

Utility: Gust, Control Fire, Shape Water and Mold Earth all have a number of uses and each lets you control one of four elements to a degree that can be easily exploited; Prestidigitation has a great number of uses; Mending lets you repair minor things, Message allows you to contact others, Mage Hand is another surprisingly helpful one, Minor Illusion can double as a defensive spell and Light means you will never worry when exploring dungeons

Level 1 Spells:

Offensive: Ray of Sickness, which also doubles as a minor control effect as it can make the target poisoned; Witch Bolt, which stacks with your levels better than Magic Missle; Chromatic Orb which has a bonus of being able to be attuned to your situation and allows you to choose the type of damage the target does not have resistance or immunities;

Defensive: Shield allows you to temporarily grant yourself +5 AC as your reaction; Mage Armor gets you some extra AC and can be cast on your allies. False Life grants you temporary health points, which you’ll need since Nico is not exactly known for her durability; Fog Cloud is good to escape group of enemies

Control: Color Spray and Sleep can get your enemies temporarily blinded or unconscious and they stack with you.

Utility: Feather Fall can save you in a moment of need; Charm Person may let you survive some botched social encounter or convince a principal you’re Molly’s mother; Expeditious Retreat allows you to get in and out of close combat.

Now, for your Arcane Focus, which you can use to cast spells, pick a staff. This is far from the mighty Staff of One, but don’t worry, we will fix that in a moment. But first, we have some more Sorcerer goodies.

2nd Level Sorcerer gets an additional spell known and one more Spell Slot. We also Get Font of Magic. Which translates into Sorcery Points, their number always equal to your Sorcerer level. So far they can do one simple thing - you can spend them to regain spell slots - 2 for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd, 6 for 4th or 5 for 7th level spell slots. You can also burn out a spell slot and gain number of Sorcery points equal to its level. You cannot have more Sorcery points than your Sorcerer level and you get them back to maximum after a long rest.

The real fun with that starts on 3rd Level of Sorcerer. That’s where you get Metamagic. How it works is that you get to pick two options that allow you to spend Sorcery Points while casting spells for extra effects. Out of the choices I recommend the fan-favorites Quicken Spell (for one sorcery point you can cast a spell with 1 action casting time as a bonus action instead) and Empowered Spell (for 1 sorcery point you can reroll a number of the damage dice for a spell equal to your Charisma modifier).

3rd Level is also where we get, aside a new Cantrip known, increase of our Spells known to 4 and a 4th 1st level Spell Slot, 2 2nd Level Spell Slots. Meaning we can now know 2nd Level Spells and here are some good suggestions:

Utility: Alter Self has several uses beyond just making you look like someone else; Knock lets you open door and containers; Enhance Ability can help on a necessary saving throw or skill check; Enlarge/Reduce does exactly what you expect and if you doubt there is a ton of uses for that, ask Hank Pym; Detect Thoughts lets you play in Jean Grey’s playground for a moment; Levitate and Misty Step greatly help you move

Okay, now that we have covered basics of the Sorcerer, time to get ourselves a magic staff.

We will now be taking Warlock levels. Some metagame note: It is debatable when is a good moment to multiclass from Sorcerer into Warlock. Popular opinion is that if you take Warlock levels before hitting 5th level of Sorcerer, it will be a pain in the ass until you catch up. However, it all depends on the DM and the type of game you play. It might be perfectly fine with more forgiving DM to pick those levels after 2,3 or even 1 level of Sorcerer (in fact, I only didn’t do that because I wanted to explain Sorcery Points and Metamagic first), it might be a worst idea ever in more hardcore game. I recommend getting the feel of your game if you start at early levels.

The first level of Warlock means Pact Magic - Nico did made the deal with the One to not have to shed her own blood anymore after all. Good news is that it works exactly like Sorcerer’s magic and there is a lot of overlap - you can expend Warlock spell slots to cast Sorcerer Spells and vice versa and you can get Warlock Spells slots back using Sorcery Points or burn them for more Sorcery points. Bad news is your Warlock levels do not stack with Sorcerer for the purpose of determining the total number of spell slots and their level the way Sorcerer does with Wizard, Cleric or Bard. Good news is there is one crucial difference between how the spellcasting of both classes works. Sorcerer regains spell slots and Sorcery Points after finishing a long rest (usually 8 hours of in-game time). Warlock regains spell slots after a short rest. Meaning you can use your Sorcery Points to get higher level spell slots back or for metamagic and then burn warlock spell slots to get them back and get Warlock spell slots back after a short rest. This is a great way to ensure you won’t run out of spells early.

Warlock gets two Cantrips, but most of them overlap with the Sorcerer, aside of Eldritch Blast and Tool the Dead, each a pretty good offensive cantrip. Same goes for or the 1st Level. You only get one spell slot, but you have more options:

Offensive: Hellish Rebuke lets you do the most goth thing ever - snark at someone who hurt you in infernal and deliver such a burn you actually set them on fire.

Defensive: Protection from Good and Evil is the only one but it is pretty darn good (no pun intended), gives a number of helpful advantages against several types of enemies.

Control: Cause Fear lets you have Nico tap into her inner wicked witch and remind everyone how terrifying she can be; Hex allows you to curse your enemies with some good control and offensive effects

Utility: Unseen Servant has some nice uses and in a pinch, you can summon him behind an enemy’s back to give your Rogue flanking for Sneak Attack. There is also Healing Elixir, which would be a great healing spell but is FUCKING BROKEN. Not in a “doesn't work” way but in an “I replace the party cleric as a designated healer and also break the economy” way. So a savvy DM may ban it.

Warlock also gets an Otherworldly Patron, which will symbolize Nico’s deal with the One. We will pick Hexblade - a deal with powerful entity from Shadowfell granted you a special weapon (I mean, the One didn’t say where he is from, so...). As a Hex Warrior you gain proficiency with medium armor, shields and martian weapons, but we won’t need it - we’re here for its second ability. Whenever you finish a long rest you can choose one weapon that you are proficient with and lacks a two-handed property and from now on you can use your Charisma for attack and damage rolls with that weapon. I can hear some of you saying “but wait, Staff of One is clearly two-handed” and while you are correct, there is a little trick for you. The Rules as Written state that the weapon cannot have a “two-handed property” meaning it is not described as two-handed by the handbook. And quarterstaff is not - it is versatile instead, meaning you can choose to use it as either one or two-handed weapon as you please. But even if the DM would not agree with that, do not worry, we will get past that little problem in just a moment.

Hexblade also learns a curse - it allows you to curse a target as a bonus action, giving you a bonus to damage against it, a better chance of critical hit and lets you heal some if you kill them. Which overlaps nicely with both abovementioned Hex spell AND with two extra spells added to your list (since other two you already had from Sorcerer) - 1st level Wrathful Smite and 2nd Level Branding Smite, each dealing extra damage to a hit and some additional effects that impose extra penalties on your enemies.

All pretty useful when you need to protect an adorable cosmic being, btw.

2nd Level Warlock gets an additional spell known and an additional spell slot. You also get Eldritch Invocations - you can select two bonuses from a list and every time you take a level of Warlock you can replace one of the Invocations with another. Whichever you choose depends on how you want to play Nico, but here are some suggestions - if you want to focus on long-distance combat Agonizing Blast, Eldritch Spear, Grasp of Hadar, Lance of Lethargy and Repelling Blast each let you customize your Eldritch Blast. If you want to actually have Nico in the first line, aiding her allies then Armor of Shadows and Fiendish Vigor let you cast on yourself a helpful minor defensive spell (Mage Armor and False Life, respectively) at will without using spell slots and if you go for control then Thief of Five Fates allows you to once between every long rest to spend a Warlock spell slot to cast Bane, a spell normally available to Bards and Clerics, that can weaken your enemies. I advise picking wisely since on next level we will actually make use of the switching option.

And here is where I would recommend switching one of your Warlock invocations for Improved Pact Weapon (which we couldn’t take before hitting this level), which removes that “no bows or crossbows” limitation, grants your pact weapon +1 bonus to attack and damage unless it already has one and from now on you can use said weapon as your arcane focus for casting spells. And it specifically states it overrules Hex Warrior limitations - you can always apply Hex Warrior bonuses to the Pact Weapon no matter what it is.

This venture into Warlock let us create Nico’s own Staff of One - summon a magic quarterstaff to cast spells and if someone is stupid enough to try to get their hands on you or your family, you can nerf them with Hex and Hexblade Curse and then beat up or even smite with the same staff, to remind them this witch is far from helpless.

As Daken here helpfully demonstrates.

We go back to the Sorcerer for the rest of this build. 4th level Sorcerer means a new Cantrip known, a new Spell known and a new 2nd level Spell Slot. We also get an Ability Score Improvement and our priority is to maximalize Charisma so we will take +2 to it.

5th Level means a new Spell known and 2 new spell slots of 3rd level. So let us go through the options

Offensive: Erupting Earth, Fireball, Sleet Storm and Lightning Bolt are all an area of effect spells that let you hit hard a whole group of enemies with fury of the elements; Melf’s Minute Meteors is something more focused.

Defensive: Blink and Gaseous Form can save your life in a pinch; Counterspell and Dispel Magic let you do something against other masters; Protection from Energy meanwhile can help you or someone else survive, say, things like your own area spell; Wall of Water is good against melee attacks.

6th Level Sorcerer learns a new spell and gets a third 3rd level spell slot. You also gain Wild Magic feature - Bend Luck, which allows you to choose an enemy or an ally and as a reaction spend two Sorcery points to apply a 1d4 penalty or bonus to their attack roll, saving throw or ability check.

7th Level Sorcerer gets to learn 4th level spells

Offense: Blight deals necrotic damage to target; Ice Storm is another, now ice-based area of effect ofensive spell; Storm Sphere and Vitroic Sphere are each a concentration-based area of effect offensive spell and so is Wall of Fire, which also has defensive uses.

Defense: Stoneskin gives you resistance to nonmagical attacks, Greater Invisibility is better version of an already good spell

Control: Banishment lets you put an enemy in a time-out or banish them completely if they’re from another dimension; Confusion can cause chaos among the enemies; Dominate beast lets you take over control over a beast; Watery Sphere traps enemies inside itself, Polymorph is a great spell for turning one tricky enemy into something less frustrating to take down or weak ally into a combat monster or Old Lace into a puppy.

Utility: Dimension Door lets you teleport with limited range.

8th Level Sorcerer - more spells known and spell slots and also an Ability Score Improvement, you should be able to cap your Charisma by now.

On 9th level, you get access to 5th Level Spells

Offense: Cloudkill, Cone of Cold and Insect Plague - evn more spells dealing damage in large areas; Immolation just SETS SOMEONE ON FIRE; Animate Objects turns a bunch of items or furniture into your servants who may fight for you.

Defense: Wall of Stone sounds, well, self-explanatory really

Control: Control Winds has several uses for defense, offense or just to make your enemy’s life harder; Dominate Person and hold Monster are better versions of spells we discussed already;

Utility: Telekinesis lets you move objects, teleportation circle can offer some help on your travels;

10th Level means more spells and you get another Metamagic. What to pick depends on what spells you selected. If you picked a lot of offensive and control spells affecting a whole area, most of them allow a saving throw and Careful Spell lets you for 1 Sorcery point to pick a number of creatures within the area up to your Charisma modifier, and make them automatically succeed said saving throw, meaning you no longer hit your allies. If you picked a lot of single-target spells, Twinned Spell lets you spend Sorcery points equal their level to make copy their effects on a second target. Distant Spell for 1 Sorcery point increases the distance of a spell so that if your teammate turns into a giant crab, you can deal with it at safe distance.

11th Level of Sorcerer lets you learn 6th Level Spells

Offense: Chain Lighting lets you hit up to 3 targets with lightning; Disintegrate hits one target and can deal even 100 force damage; Circle of Death is your area of effect murder spell of the level; Sunbeam hits all targets within a line for Radiant damage

Defense: Globe of invulnerability cuts off the target from rest of the battlefield, it can be both a life-saver and a control spell;

Control: Eyebite makes it that as long as you maintain the spell each turn you can grant some nasty things on your enemies by simply looking them in the eye; Mass Suggestion is like good old Suggestion for multiple targets.

Utility: Move Earth lets you manipulate the terrain around you; True Seeing has a number of uses, surprisingly

Investitures - there are 4 spells called that way, of Flame, Ice, Stone and Wind. Each one has a combination of defensive, offensive and control effects in one package.

12th Level Sorcerer gets more Spells and an Ability Score Improvement but we will pick a feat. Inspiring Leader lets you spend 10 minutes on boosting the morale of your allies. Choose up to six creatures within 30 feet, including you, who will get temporary hit points equal your level + your Charisma Modifier and you cannot give them the same bonus again until they finish long rest. Most of the players roleplay this as giving a speech for 10 minutes but it’s not said you must do it that way and a 10-minutes long speech in a game is gonna be a pain in the ass. You can easily use this to roleplay Nico being caring dean mother to her teammates.

13th Level Sorcerer learns 7th level Spells

Offense: Delayed Blast Fireball lets you cast Fireball with time for your allies to run away from the area; Fire Storm is, well, a storm of fire that you may be able to place in a way that avoids said allies; Finger of Death deals necrotic damage and slain target raises as a zombie; Prismatic Spray may hit an enemy with wide array of damage or effects

Defense: none

Control: Reverse Gravity is another one in a long line of “make your enemies’ life hell” area of effect spells, bonus points if Nico starts singing that one spell from Wicked.

Utility: Teleport, especially climactic with its possibility of mishap; Etherealness allows you to reach places you shouldn’t with an extra defensive effect; Plane Shift lets you take the entire team to another dimension or send an enemy on a such trip.

14th Level gives you a Wild Magic Feature, Controlled Chaos. From now on when you roll on Wild Magic Surge Table, you can roll twice and choose one result.

15th Level Sorcerer lets you earn 8th Level Spells

Offense: Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, Sunburst and Incidentiary Cloud are even more powerful area of effect spells to hurt your enemies. Warning, if you pick the first, you WILL mispronounce it at some point as “Horrid Writing” and lead to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy jokes at the table.

Defense: none

Control: Power Word: Stun lets you stun any target with less than 150 hp; Earthquake is the most overkill way to terrorize your enemies with some possible damage effect; Dominate Monster lets you take control over someone but remember - it has nothing to do with BDSM so don’t try it on Karolina during your kinky nights.

Utility: none

16th Level Sorcerer gains an ability score improvement, boost Constitution and remember it gives you bonus hit points for each level, including retroactively, adding 16 to your hp. Tough feat might have given you twice as much but we also need to boost up your Concentration and Constitution Save.

We will cap on 17th Level Sorcerer, grab another Metamagic of your choice and one 9th Level Spell. By which I mean grab Wish, Wish is fucking awesome and it fits perfectly with Nico’s “price to power” thing. If you exchange one of your other spells you can pick another 9th Level Spell (but remember, you only have one Spell Slot per long rest for 9th level spells) so choose one: Power Word: Kill lets you flat out murder someone with 100 hp or lower. Meteor Swarm is an area of effect offensive spell that bombards the area with meteors because I guess an Earthquake wasn’t over the top enough. Time Stop is sadly nerfed, but you can use it in a pinch to run away, no pun intended, buff or heal yourself

So we did it. Nico is a Warlock 3/Sorcerer 17 so now let us take a look at our pros and cons

For the pros, you have the way with spells that you think fits Nico’s character best and, if you choose right you can be a devastating force capable of taking down many enemies, control the battlefield or have a hefty dose of utility spells at your disposal. You have some additional versatility with Sorcery Points and Warlock spell slots, keeping you in battle a bit longer. You are a skilled party face, able to act as the leader to your group. You can also add your friends in direct combat with Hexblade abilities and your HP should on average get beyond the dreaded Power Word: Kill range.

For the negatives, your melee effectiveness is not THAT great, merely a last resort thing and you do not have that many spells that can improve it. Your strongest offensive spells are almost all likely to be the area of effect, meaning you need to be careful and your Wild Magic can as easily help as mess things up. Finally, we didn’t cap Constitution, meaning your concentration, Constitution save and health points are not as good as they could be. Finally, as a sorcerer, you cannot wear armor and your dexterity is not the best so your AC is meek and you need these defensive spells. However, you still are gonna be a great supporting caster capable of acting in second or even first line. Have a friend who is a good front-line combatant to shield you and add some punch to your magic and you should be a force to be reckoned with.

These things speak to the absolute core of the medical profession; about what it means to be a doctor. Both the oath and the ethics principles emphasize the care of the patient above all else.

We saw in Kyle’s interaction with Isobel in 1x08 that he very staunchly believes in upholding medical morals; when you have a patient, you treat them to the best of your ability. End of story. We also see him, very early in the season, tell off Jesse Manes for trying to get him to break doctor patient confidentiality. Kyle works very hard to conform to the moral code he was taught, the medical ideal. Fundamentally, Kyle is a good doctor.

When he and Michael enter room 7A, what he sees are living beings that have been in captivity for decades. Michael quickly confirms they are aliens, but Kyle reacts the way he has been trained to anyway: evaluate and diagnose. (Their bodies are covered in bruises, scarring, needle tracks. Anti-social behavior indicates prolonged trauma.) He is aware however, that these people are subjects because they are not human. (Note his first reaction when they hear someone coming is to hide Michael.)

But all he sees are patients, regardless of species. In his conversation with the unnamed guard, Kyle calls subject N38 “he”. The guard uses “it”. A minor difference, but an extremely important one.

Kyle sees the aliens as living beings deserving of the same considerations he gives to humans. The guard does not.

Kyle recognizes that what has been going on in Caulfield for 70 years is inhumane and goes against every code of medical ethics he has ever been taught. Which is why, when Flint verifies that his father was a participant in the project, Kyle immediately condemns his actions. x

Kyle applies the same ethical principles to the aliens that he does to his human patients, like any good doctor should. And when he learns that his father did not do the same, he rejects him. As Kyle has been investigating his father’s death for most of the season, this is a major indication of exactly how much he believes in and upholds the codes of his profession.

Last but not least, Alex. The protector. He is an airman in the US Air Force, a member of the US military. The armed forces exist, ideally, to defend and serve their countries. This is why people like Alex are called “service members”. Admittedly warfare is by nature violent, and people get hurt. Alex talks about this at the end of the episode, “...you look around and you realize that the evil is you.” He has enough sense to recognize the faults the military has.

But because of this fault, this very real danger of crossing moral lines that don’t exist in the heat of battle, there are rules. The Geneva Conventions, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the Articles of War before that, and countless international treaties exist to prevent war crimes.

Ideally, the only people who should be in danger during a war are active enemy combatants. Civilians and prisoners of war are explicitly protected groups.

It is part of Alex’s job to be informed on these issues, and during his conversation with Flint it’s clear he knows his stuff. “Bioweapons are banned by international treaty” is Alex explicitly referencing a UN regulation to Flint, in reaction to seeing a prototype for a smart bomb that targets DNA. But it’s the next line that is the most revealing about Alex’s personal mindset. Flint tries to argue that the UN doesn’t have a say when it comes to an alien enemy (The UN’s jurisdiction ends at the ozone layer) and Alex disagrees in no uncertain terms (The jurisdiction on genocide?).

Alex is viewing the alien survivors as civilians. Flint is viewing them as an active hostile force.

We know from Noah’s explanation at the beginning of the episode that the aliens are quite literally refugees fleeing a war, but Alex doesn’t know that yet. (Even if they were an invading force, they are clearly imprisoned now and should fall under the protection of the Geneva Conventions. Find the POW provisions here.) The fact that Alex is applying the regulations that exist to protect humans to aliens as well speaks very strongly to his sense of justice and moral right.

tl;dr In 1x12 each of these three characters prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they consider the aliens to be deserving of treatment and consideration equal to that of humans, despite two of them having very good reasons to despise them. (Interestingly these are not the same two who have romantic/sexual relationships with said aliens.) Doing so also emphasizes how each of them fulfill the ideals of each of their professional roles and I think it makes for a very telling character study.
