"All you will find in there is pain."
Harmony Cobel being deprived of the closure of her mother's death and suffering. Her mother as only a nonbeliever, all the better for her daughter to work at the factory for Kier, to redeem the family. A woman she probably hardly knew and doesn't completely remember... Separated not only by death but before that by the structure and belief system of a cultish faith.
Severance allowing a disconnect from emotion, Harmony having to work through the grief she was denied so many decades later without even being severed herself...
Severance as the evolution of the structure of cult mentality integrated with technology.

Man i finally watched the new episode of severance and on top of the thread of no autonomy there's a very specific thread of no sexual autonomy.
The threat of sexual assault is hanging over everyone heads. Even Milchick's reason for Cobel leaving was slightly sexual which felt, i dont know, believable?
Helena's dad saying I wish you'd take them raw in regards to the egg was awful and sexual!
It is just there. It's hanging over our heads and it's stressful.

I just saw a post of somebody saying that Cobel and Hampton's kiss was ruining Cobel as a character by "adding pointless romance" [or something along those lines, I have a terrible memory lol]. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like labeling it like that lessens the complexity of their dynamic.
They worked together when they were kids. They got high together to cope with working 10 hour shifts. Even despite not seeing each other in god knows how long, despite having such differing ideals, he still helps her. Getting to know somebody and spend so much time with them under a context like that will inevitably lead to such a mixed bag of feelings, and episode 8 demonstrated that in such an intelligent way. Their relationship feels so much more complicated imo than just a shoehorned romance.

Harmony Cobel I'm so sorry I thought you were just an extra crazy business major, when all this time you were a fellow woman in STEM

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again one of the biggest themes of this show is the denial of love and human connection, the way Lumon and oppressive powers discourage if not outright forbid it unless they can use it, the way they think love and grief are easily cut away by removing memories, and the fact that despite their best efforts, love and human connection will still blossom.
And people complain it’s a pointless straight ship when we see it expressed again with Cobel - the longing for a love/relationship/connection she could never explore with a fellow child laborer, that she likely will never get to explore because Lumon took so much from them.

okay so knowing what we know now about cobel...why do i see no one scared for ms huang??? like at all?? why are we not possibly thinking about the fact that she was probably brought up in this system. the fact that she's involved in this wintertide fellowship just like cobel was all those years ago and who was then exploited all for the sake of a corporate institution that doesnt give A RATS ASS about anyone?? THEY DONT CARE IF YOU LIVE OR DIE!!!
i know this child gets on our nerves. i know we make jokes (that are, lets be clear, hilarious) about how ms huang is trying to boss milchick around. but have we entertained the thought that ms huang is probably just as ambitious, just as full of ideas about how lumon should be run?? about how the state of the company to every lumonite feels like THE STATE OF THE WORLD??? because it's all they were taught and all they know??? ("this is the tallest waterfall in the world!!")
my absolute favourite thing that ive noticed is that the management team represents a growth cycle.
ms huang is at the start: optimistic about how lumon is changing and influencing the world around it. the most ignorant.
milchick is in the middle: has more experience and is being slowly massaged into becoming the ultimate employee. the ultimate, most loyal follower but is starting to see the cracks in what this servitude means. hes becoming more aware of all the insidious shit that they can get away with. hes experiencing all the conflict and is on the precipice of either complete rebellion or full subservience.
cobel is at the end: she has seen and endured it all. she's about to approach the end of the cycle. she has witnessed what lumon ACTUALLY has done. the power they are capable of wielding and how they dont value anyone. they exploit humans and their labour so they can have some sense of power and control.

All Glory Be in Service to the Nine
(Spoilers for Severance, 2x08, “Sweet Vitriol.”)
-
If Kier’s winters were cold, the winters of Salt’s Neck were brutal.
Her nose wrinkled, taking in air so frigid that it burned. Ocean spray stung on the cutting wind, carrying faint familiar scents of brine and granite. Ice-crusted snow crunched beneath her boots.
She remembered vapor rising from the factory to spiral into bone-white skies. Remembered blisters cracked and swollen on her small hands. Remembered the taste of the Nine in her eager mouth, her high voice piping like a gull’s.
This town had once known a guiding hand. She had reached to it in supplication, her devoted heart shining in its shadow. She had scrawled theory and science and innovation on exercise book pages, sharing knowledge as Kier had intended. Her vision lived on in workers and test-floor subjects and senator’s wives, and not a one of them knew the truth of her contribution to the world.
She had made herself smaller in Lumon’s service, dimming her own light for the glory of Kier.
Harmony bit her lip and tasted blood.
Salt’s Neck rattled around her, death-knells echoing through an oxygen circuit, lungs fibrotic and failing. The very walls of the buildings peeled and warped and collapsed upon themselves, scarred with Lumon’s letters. The people, what she glimpsed of them, were ghosts who had not yet realized they had died. The corpses stank of ether.
All was decay. Weakness. Woe. Her mouth twisted. She was better than this ruined, shattered land; better than its shriveled specters. She was stronger than they knew.
And she would prove it to the fucking Eagans if it killed her.
