Festivids 2023 reeeecs
What a great year it's been for festivids. There are some stonkingly good vids!
Here is the Masterlist. As always, my recs below are just those I liked most, but there are a lot of other fab vids that are worth a watch as well.
I made six vids this year. A bit astonishing really. I think three of them are really obviously by me, but the rest maybe not so much. Anyway, if you can guess, the guessing post is here: Guess the Vidder.
Two fantastic vids were gifted to me:
Fireflies - Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2021) - Gen
I watched this movie on a whim one day, and it was sweet and genuine and funny and I loved it way more than I thought I would. This vid captures that perfectly. It's a delight.
Been Caught Stealing - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) - Gen
This has everything you could want from a D&D vid: it's action-packed, funny, and captures the chaotic energy of the movie really well.
Highly Recommended
And Do It Again - 开端 | Reset (TV 2022) - Teen
Fantastic time-loop vid, which ramps up the tension in the most delightful way.
I'm Gonna Make You Love Me - Christine (1983) - Teen
Christine is the perfect girlfriend. Such a creepy-great premise.
I'm That Queer - Janelle Monáe Music Videos - Teen
Spectacular, surreal, gorgeously edited.
Les Fleurs - Gake no Ue no Ponyo | Ponyo - Gen
This is so lush and dramatic, and sweeps you along in the best way.
a vulture feeds upon that heart forever - Moby Dick - Herman Melville - Mature
All the Moby Dick vids are great - who knew it would be the power fandom of the fest? But while they are all worth a watch, this one is my fave. The soundtrack is lush, and the visuals are over the top, and full of drama. The sources are mixed so beautifully.
Here it Goes Again - Moby Dick - Herman Melville - Teen
This is also a spectacular multi-source feast for the eyes.
Everything I Do - Cocaine Bear (2023) - Teen
LOL. This is just exactly what it sounds like, edited to absolute perfection. The joke couldn't be better executed.
Do What I Do - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) - Teen
Wonderful character study of Holga.
Tusk - The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - Mature
Clarice is showcased to her best here, and it's gripping.
magnetic - Romeo+Juliet (1996) - Teen
Mercutio vid and it's so much fun!
Recommended
Hard Times - Star Trek: Lower Decks (Cartoon) - Teen
Flirting & Fighting - 新龍門客棧 | Dragon Inn (1992) - Teen
The Only Way to See - Amaury Guichon - Fandom - Gen
Nothing in My Head - Dropout TV RPF - Gen
Feel Better - Silo (TV) - Teen
The Eye of the Tiger - RRR (2022) - Teen
satisfaction - The Quick and the Dead (1995) - Teen
Disaster Party - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) - Gen
How to make a perfect Hanukkah movie… - Hallmark Movies - Gen
Uja - Slash/Back (2022) - Teen
Didn't Come to Play - Women's sprinting - Gen
The Shape of You - The Pirate (1948) - Gen
The Adventures of Priscilla, Dancing Queen of the Desert - The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1994) - Teen
#teamwhale - Moby Dick - Herman Melville - Gen
Queequeg and I - Moby Dick - Herman Melville - Teen
Boys Keep Swinging - As You Like It - Shakespeare - Gen
Dream Girl Evil - Last Night in Soho (2021) - Explicit
Cat Apostle, Conqueror of Asthma, Chosen One Of The Light - 开端 | Reset (TV 2022) - Gen
Andor: Come Forth Now - Andor (TV) - Gen
Bad Reputation - For All Mankind (TV 2019) - Gen
put on a show - The Wheel of Time (TV) - Teen
Upside Down - The Woman King (2022) - Teen
Always On My Mind - Strange Way Of Life (Short Film 2023) - Teen
Trust+Fall - Romeo+Juliet (1996) - Teen

Spoiler warnings for both Season 1 and Season 2 of The Bad Batch.
It's done, finally. My TechxPhee edit. The song is "Unexpected Song," written by Andrew Lloyd Webber for his musical, "Song And Dance."
It is performed here by Ralph Barnes. I chose Ralph Barnes' version because I think he sounds like Tech. 🥰
This was a learning experience for me, figuring out Cap Cut.
TW: The ending is sad. 😭

Ok, upon request my thoughts on Bad Buddy, a good queer romance drama that doesn't get much if any international exposure outside the circle of Thai BL fans. Full spoilers.
after consuming literally dozens of BB videos, the best trailer to the drama imo is actually the talented samyvids' "Just My Type" songvid. Perfectly captures the setup.
youtube
* the hook: 2 boys raised by their feuding families to be rivals end up attending a university that has a childish Jets vs Sharksesque historic rivalry between the science/engineering vs artistic/architecture majors. Despite these 2 barriers, the boys stumble into a secret bromance and then into love. Secondary couple here is f/f, though it's basically just soft girls meet cute then getting together (no conflict).
* Comedic and light-hearted drama that doesn't take itself too seriously, while also swerving into the appropriate amount of angst for its set up.
* This '20-something bros in love' dynamic reminds me vividly of what a lot of SPN J2 RPF and Hockey RPF has tried to capture. The 2 leads feel like your prototypical good natured university bros and falling in love never changes that. Friends AND Lovers is a challenging dynamic to capture imo but Bad Buddy succeeds
* It helps the Bros In Love vibes that the actors look less primped & polished than many other asian BL productions. They seem like guys you could have actually had in your classes in uni.
* If you welcome the drama's tone and just vibe with it, I think it successfully executes 4 popular romance tropes:
- rivals to friends to lovers
- forbidden (hidden) love
- fall first vs fall harder
- golden retriever bounding around paw cleaning cat
* If you are going to sell me on a modern day romeo & juliet esque queer rom-com, without the bloodshed, then you BETTER put your money where you mouth is and make their love actually forbidden.
* Thankfully, Bad Buddy understood the assignment. It's not just a misunderstanding. Their parents truly do have a feud and they truly are forbidden to even be friends, forget a romantic relationship. 2 kids obligated to be enemies since birth, bound by this twisted shared experience that no one else understands.
* Pran falling first, with enough time to comprehend how cruelly impossible they are. Pat falling late, fast, and hard - too impulsive to consider the consequences and wearing his heart on his sleeve.
* Both characters won me over quickly:  cautious & restrained Pran who likes order, chaotic Pat who craves his attention
* Love that the dramatic tension & hiding in all the early episodes isn't revealed to be pointless. If there was no consequence, then it removes the poignancy of its classic rooftop kiss scene. Prans' fears must be justified in order for the angst to stand up in a rewatch. Pran's friends DO reject him at first. Their parents DO refuse to accept the relationship, including his mom considering this a personal betrayal.
* Prans' fears are painfully rational and everything he is scared of does have to be confronted. But that also gives romantic weight to his decision to give in to the feelings and accept the consequences.
* In the way that scifi authors will try to explore sociopolitical topics through allusions & metaphor, and that Hunger Games author keeps writing dystopian YA whenever she gets heated about politics, Bad Buddy does a good job imo of using the feuding families setup to address the reality of existing in a homophobic and transphobic society while being queer -- demonstrating it in a way that straight cis people can relate to. And approaching from this angle allows the production to tell that story with a certain emotional distance for queer viewers who have experienced such struggles.
* The bittersweet ending sells me completely on this drama. Closeted but not. Open but not entirely. Accepting that you can't change the world and make all your family & friends & coworkers accept your truth... but refusing to abandon them OR your truth. It's a decision so many queer people have made over the years, in different countries and decades. And it's tinged with hope.
* Let's acknowledge that indeed there is tons of product placement in this series. Sometimes to hilarious ends. But frankly, without this sponsorship the series would not exist. So I'm very grateful to suffer through the marketing that helped fund it.
* Available streaming in multiple places, including YouTube.

Vid recs from VidUKon
The unthemed premieres happened last night, and the whole show was amazing. The VJ did such a good job of putting it together.
You can find a majority of the vids linked here: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/vidukon_premieres_2024/works
Below are my particular favourites.
The War Was in Color, by theletterelle (Multifandom, Gen) A brilliant concept, brilliantly realised. So damn good.
9-1-1, by Rhea (9-1-1, Gen) Fantastic commentary on working in Emergency Services.
Watershed, by periru3 (Studio Ghibli, Gen) A stunning retrospective.
The Song We Were Singing, by alba17 (The Beatles, Gen) Brilliantly edited character study of the band. So good.
Vanity is Definitely My Favorite Sin, by bStro Al Pacino is and always will be the coolest, which this vid illustrates perfectly.
The System is Down, by pollyrepeat (Severance, Gen) Surreal and gorgeous, with the music ramping everything up to eleven.
From the Air, by JinkyO (Person of Interest, Gen) Creepy and fantastic repeating simulations, with the most amazing music choice.
Dumb Ways to Die, by valoise (Midsomer Murders, Teen) Exactly what the title promises, executed perfectly (pun intended). Violent and funny.
Bad Idea, Right? by Pennyplainknits (Star Wars, Gen) LOL. Sometimes gag vids are just THE BEST.
We Like to Party, by marah_sarie (Farscape, Gen) So much fun, showcasing all the glorious bizareness of this source.

OK time for stats on my #VHS #VideoTape #digitiztion project
1. I have 291 mainly #VHS videotapes of #fanvids (or #songtapes / #songvids
2. I received most of them back in the 2010s - my progress is glacial
3. I still have 178 more videotapes to convert.  Some of these are duplicates but given  the poor tape quality,  the plan is to convert all of them
4. My lossless conversion setup no longer works (capture cards have grown worse over the years and the ones I had only worked with OS that no longer runs aka Win XP). So I am relying on  DVD-Recorder to digitize what I can.
What is  a songtape or a songvid?

- Ringo teasing Glyn about not getting to bed last night <3
George: Do you know about that? They collect all nice-looking things and make a garden around where they are, just with all the groovy things they find. It's great.
- George literally checking if Ringo even knows what an octopus's garden is. I love that he does a bit of work on it, and then immediately tries to get it to resolve! Everything must resolve. Even octopuses. It's such a beautiful happiness of a song. I love George M coming to smile at it. I love John wandering in in his sailor's hat. <3
- Oh my god everyone is so lovely with Heather today, maybe it would be actually nice if they just went to live in a commune and raised children together. Somewhere sunshine and easy.
- I love that John wants Paul to do 'that old gospel ending that Elvis did', and gets moody that Paul ignores him, and then sings it softly right up and at him.
- Paul on drums while Ringo's sitting right there next to him... We don't get to see how that came about so I'm going to assume it was fine.
- I hope Heather's little wrinkled face is a genuine reaction shot to Yoko's singing, because I think it's lovely how interested and confused by it she looks. I love that a bit later she goes and sits with John and Yoko because they're on the floor, and then does some Yoko style singing with them. I think it's so freeing and beautiful for her, and I just think all girls should see women make noise that way. And John incorporating her into the song, and this face when she sees someone watching:
Tumblr media
- EVERYTHING SHOULD BE SONGVID. FOR ALWAYS EVER MORE. PLEASE THANK YOU.
- John and Yoko dancing, GM with a maraca, Paul chucking Heather at the ceiling, Mal having a little dance! SO LOVELY.
Heather: Mr Sock... Mr Sock? Mr Sock? Glyn: Er yes, Mrs Sock.
- GM trying to make them rehearse new songs. Beatles thinking they maybe just won't though.
- I love when Paul says he might add strings to Long and Winding Road, and GM teases them about how they've been on about doing things SIMPLE and in ONE TAKE and then John's constantly 'we can just cheat there' and Paul's constantly 'well we'll add orchestras obviously!'
- Paul feeling every bit of Billy's playing. - Billy feeling every bit of Paul's delight.
Tumblr media
John: Very strong dream. We both dreamt about it... Amazing. Different dreams, you know. I thought you must have been there. I mean, I was touching you. George: Was it sexually oriented? Paul: Oh, you know, John, don't worry about it. John: There's nothing to worry about.
ANSWER THE QUESTION, JOHN.

Title: 'Bodie and Doyle Gimme Your Love' Vidder: zzebeddy Relationship: M/M Characters: Bodie/Doyle Rating: Not rated
Summary: Ray and Bodie find their groove, together.
I found this music track to be an irresistible scaffold for a 7Os/Pros-y adventure, however it didn't lend itself to shortening, so it ended up being a little longer than the projects I usually take on.
Playback tip: For best viewing, be sure to choose the 1080p HD setting on the Youtube player. (Click the settings wheel, click 'quality')
For now, this is an 'unlisted' video, which means it can be viewed via my archive/journal/fan comm posts, but not through general internet or YT searches.
Disclaimer: I do not own the show, characters or music. The music track is 'Gimme Your Love' by Morcheeba.

I wish i could find fic that delved as deeply into Cas's canon relationship with other angels as this vid does. The situation over the course of the show just got more and more heartbreaking.
