Sonny Clark – The Sonny Clark Memorial Album

Sonny Clark was only 22 at the time of this private recording but he already had his Bud Powell-based piano style together. Clark is heard unaccompanied and, for two lengthy songs, in a trio with bassist Simon Brehm and drummer Bobby White. The solo tracks in particular are quite interesting for they are very spontaneous with some rambling resulting in ad-lib medleys. The music gives one a rare chance to hear Sonny Clark in a relaxed setting, thinking aloud musically. This valuable document (which is reasonably well recorded for a live date of the era) was first released in 1975 as a Xanadu LP (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).

“Minor Move” by #TinaBrooks was recorded on March 16, 1958, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey and it was Brooks first recording as a leader. The session featured Brooks on tenor, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #SonnyClark on piano, #DougWatkins on bass and #ArtBlakey on drums. This was Brooks first time as a leader. Although this session was recorded in 1958 it was shelved for some reason until 1980 when it was released in Japan. The funny thing about this album for me is while I was living in Okinawa, Japan I purchased “True Blue” around the fall of 1981 and saw this album in the Tina Brooks section, but I was kind if thrown off by the picture of a cat on the front cover and passed on it. I did have them play side 1 in the record store one afternoon, but I decided to purchase something else. The CD in my collection is what I had until @BlueNoteRecords released this current copy I have in their #TonePoet Series. This session has an all-star cast featuring a then 19-year-old Lee Morgan teamed up with Brooks to form an awesome frontline. My favorite tune on this album is “Nutville” that at first, I thought was the same tune as the “Nutville” on #HoraceSilver “The Cape Verdean” album and its up-tempo Latin flavor, but this Brooks’ composition sounds nothing like it. As the liner note states, “In 1958 Lee Morgan was in his “Bull Ring” period, a time when everything he played seemed about to burst into a fanfare.” And he was in top form for this session. I still wonder why I didn’t purchase this album when I had the chance back in 1981 as I read over the liner notes it dawned on me that at the time of that first Japanese pressing everyone except for Art Blakey had passed before their 43rd birthday. With Morgan, Watkins and Clark passing away tragically and Brooks plagued throughout his adult life from a heroin dependency and his health gradually deteriorating, he eventually passed away from liver cancer at the age of 42. Leapin’ and Lopin’ is an album by jazz pianist Sonny Clark, released on Blue Note Records, recorded in 1961, and issued in 1962 . It was Clark’s last album as a leader before his death in 1963. It features a guest appearance from sax player Ike Quebec, who was mounting a comeback after a decade of low visibility. The rhythm section of Clark, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins would also appear on sessions with Dexter Gordon yielding his albums for Blue Note Go! and A Swingin’ Affair.

The Allmusic review by Michael G. Nastos awarded the album 4½ stars and stated “Top to bottom, Leapin’ and Lopin’ is a definitive recording for Clark, and in the mainstream jazz idiom, as well.”
