Story Guide

It was the Summer of 1972 when you first met Stanford. You remember it almost all too well. You went to a college for the arts, majoring in music composition. Oh! And you were in a band! It was not good by any means, you all were figuring this out as you went but you were all having fun so it didn’t really matter to you. It’s kinda funny looking back on how the two of you somehow became a couple considering how different the two of you were.

You two only met after you accidentally stumbled in his room one night after you partied too hard at someone else's dorm. You thought his room was your friend's room. His dorm had books scattered around, posters of some scientists on the wall and an absolute mess of notes on his desk. Stanford did not want to spend his night with some random drunk girl in his dorm, but he knew he had to let you in, not trusting what any of the other men on the campus would do if they saw you like this. He didn’t know why you made him so flustered, maybe it was your vulnerable state, or just because you were a girl, talking to him.

It was probably both.

“You know, I never wanted to go to this, it was some promotional stuff for my band. Did I tell you I was in a band? We are amazing!” You were laying on the floor staring at the ceiling smiling goofily, flipping onto your stomach to look at the flustered man whose dorm you broke into. He took a glance over his shoulder to look at you, trying to tell you he was listening, even if you didnt care if he was or not. “Okay so that might be a lie, Gabs is super pitchy, Jamie is still figuring out the drums but that's besides the point..I met you by going to this!” you finally sat up running a hand through your hair “You're so dorky it's kinda cute” you let off a soft giggle pointing at him.

This made Stanford physically freeze, his breath hitching slightly “Thank you I suppose, Are your friends looking for you?” He quickly changed the subject, turning around in his chair, looking at you “I think, I dunno… I kinda wanna stay here with you” you smirked. “Well I-” he started before he heard a female voice yelling in the hallway “Y/N! We gotta go!” “Oh that's Gabs! She’s my friend!” You stumbled up before heading towards the door, pausing before going back over to the man kissing his check with a giggle, causing Stanford's face to turn bright red “Thank you for saving me! I’m Y/n by the way!” “Um… It's Stanford, Call me Ford..” he managed to get out, quickly writing the phone number to the telephone that was in his room, down on a piece of notebook paper. “Just.. Call me when you get to your dorm safe..” he quickly turned back to face his textbooks he had his nose buried in hours ago “Aw you care about me… Okay loverboy. Seeya around!” you poked his shoulder before leaving, yelling at your friend ‘Gabs’ to get her attention

Ford had no idea why he did that, he never had the balls to do this sort of thing. Especially with someone as beauti- No why the hell was he having these thoughts? You weren't going to call him. He has to forget about this encounter, he concluded, going back to his uneventful night.

He got a call the next day, it was you. There was some sort of music in the background, he couldn't place what it was, some pop music maybe. “Oh my gosh is this Ford? I kinda crashed at your dorm last night, I am sooo sorry I am super embarrassed.” you rambled on before Ford let off a slight chuckle “No it's fine. I’m glad you're safe, you seemed very out of it last night” he leaned back in his chair slightly as he spoke “Ugh don't get me started about the hangover” you groaned causing him to laugh.

After that was the beginning of a relationship, you spent your off time together, he helped you with classes and you expanded his music taste, well tried to at least.

It's been 4 months since you two started dating. Ford even told his brother about this, and to say Stanley was shocked was an understatement, he rushed over surprising Ford “So you finally found a girl who doesn’t run off screaming? Tell me all about her” Stanley smirked looking at his twin brother, noticing a photo of you on his desk in a frame, you had a microphone in your hand giving a peace sign to the camera with your other hand. How the hell did his brother score you? Ford went off to ramble about you, he was a love sick mess, but the way his eyes kept shifting to the photo of you when explaining you made Stan confused, why did he have to keep looking at it to talk about you?

He noticed a few flyers to some music festivals, they looked untouched. “Who gave you these?” he picked one up, the show was for tonight, in a few hours. “Oh Y/n did. She’s in a band” Ford looked at the flier before directing his attention back to the textbook that was in front of him “You plan on seeing her right?” Stan raised an eyebrow looking at his brother “Too busy, I have an exam tomorrow” Ford shrugged it off flipping to the next page in his book “You’re joking right? Have you been to any of her shows?” Stan narrowed his eyes in disapproval, Ford didn't say anything “Some boyfriend you are” He muttered looking down at the flier in his hands. He knew what he had to do, he wasn’t going to let Ford ruin the only potential relationship he would probably ever have.

Artfight Postmortem

as you may know, i am prone to reflection on my art and process and progress. herein, i'm gonna navel gaze a bit about artfight 2024.

top line: really enjoyed myself, did a bunch of new things and this was "The Year of Artist Friends" which is spectacular.

i completed 20 attacks this year, including my first ever mass attacks! altogether I drew 28 different characters (incl 4 of my own).

for the first time, I had *users* i wanted to attack, rather than just characters i'd gathered via search or discord. honestly, three years ago when i picked up the stylus i was just excited at the prospect of drawing for other people, period. artfight was a cool way to be in community without prerequisites. i didn't quite dare to dream i might make some real connections and make proper friends. and yet :) here we are! i went in with three 'art friends' and i'm leaving with at least three more

in addition to being the year of artist friends, this could be "the year of clip studio paint was on megasale a week before artfight" because i knocked out like 2 practice pieces before July 1st so i wouldn't be starting with completely unfamiliar tools, but i used/learned csp for the vast majority of my attacks. one i finished in krita (lonnie), and my final attack i only used krita.

definitely trial-by-fired myself! but it motivated me to explore csp, and most important, gave me a reason to practice practice practice. last year i drew almost exclusively humans, lots of full bodys, because i wanted to get a better grip on anatomy and drawing a variety of faces. it worked then, and, well, i think i learned more of csp in one month of artfight than i would have if i was just plodding through my personal projects for 33 days :) *looks at my wip folder with months old files* pretty sure.

ok i'm gonna look at a few faves/standouts now:

came in hot with 0tt0 here! the main brush for this one (froggy pencil) was a mainstay for the whole month. so versatile!!! and lovely texture. this isn't quiiite brat green but this was what made me go, hmm, what if i... did a few pieces inspired by this album i can't stop listening to?

and then i took a huge turn and just used a soft round brush for Desa and Iryna for my dear friend @bobomcfoe bc i really wanted to turn these out in something approaching my "usual style" of late and i feared getting too deep into the temptations of csp if i put them off. and, um, yeah i love them. i got sooo close to matching that angle but ahh i can see the tilt now! nonetheless, love these two, not least bc brookie has some of the most pleasing color palettes to work w :)

then on to Rosé and baby's first vector lines! you can RESIZE lines in csp. did you know that? i didn't know that. i did forget to use it as much as i could have in later ones though, so i still only kinda know it ig. and halftone shading! bc why not? another thing i really only did this once, but want to experiment with more

Rook here, for my new friend @gender-premium-tm, was me realizing how to use filters/filter layers in csp. now THAT is something i used a lot this month! also something i use often in krita. i must say, though the csp options are slightly more limited (afaik), they have oomph!

okay these two are my "explicitly brat pieces"! artfight keeps you moving, which i find really valuable, bc i could have dithered foreverrr over Lonnie's gif here. like, do i add his arm? maybe he should be wearing a shirt? or, what if i just draw him twice, instead of splitting the expressi--see it just never ends. and as i am always going on about, art is so precious bc it is a reflection of us when we make it. maybe for some future artfight i'll redraw this (as Lonnie's artist @wenmistry did for me with Ebon this year), but for july 2024, i'm amazed at how well i executed this for just 2.5 days of work! (i did forget his glasses, which realization gave me a different take on the composition, so this is high on my list of potential redraws)

and then Aagatha. this is in my top 3 for this year. the pink just works so well with the green and her artist added the song to her character playlist AND added the necklace to her actual dnd inventory. like. omg. the impact your art can have!!! how freaking cool is that???

two mass attacks! i was in a silly goofy mood. i feel like i really got a handle on vectors w the anthro mass attack, i adjusted every single point on that one by hand. weird what hyperfocus makes you do sometimes, but i learned a lot from that. mainly that i will probably never user vectors as my main linework tool. there are circumstances it is perfect for, and outside of that i'm good w my raster lines lol

which is exactly what i used for this other mass attack, featuring mostly my ocs. hey, sometimes you need to shake things up! i can see here the style starting to hew back to my "usual style", though i'm thinking that might have a lot to do with drawing 5 people very quickly. falling back on practiced techniques. and by this time i apparently knew csp well enough to reproduce them pretty closely! ooh, one thing this made me miss was the transform tool in krita. that floor was ROUGH to wrestle into place in csp.

purple and green turned up a lot this year!

Echo is my crowning achievement with the froggy pencil, most of the shading here is just layers w that. and one last nod to brat green :)

i've worked in the paper cut style before (both my pfp's use it) but i really exploited csp's clipping layers to make Scraps here. they did make me briefly forget how they work in krita when i switched back, so well done w that

i played with gradient maps a little earlier in the month but for Okanar i actually made my own gradient! really a useful tool for ref'ing real human skin tones to make non-human ones, without muddying them up too much.

finally, Chaos. this actually might be my favorite! ironically this is the one that i made in krita. it was like, ahh, yes my old friend. wait where is the scroll bar. ah, okay, yes my old friend... the line layer is set to burn which just makes the whole thing so warm (and the cause of the red outlines on the earrings). used my old sable brush, a pattern fill set to overlay... my old stomping grounds! but plus a rendering technique i picked up this month and some other random habits i picked up in csp (like copying a detail to a new layer, moving it where i want a copy, and drawing/tracing it back onto the original layer in the new position. nothing i couldn't have been doing in krita all along, but made easier by the tool layout in csp, and therefore now discovered by me. amazing how one integrates new knowledge. it's like magic sometimes!!!)

Introducing my teams Pt3 - Mono Bow

disclaimer: I build my teams mostly based of a certain thematic and just for fun, they are not fully “meta” oriented and while I’m sure they can be improved upon I’m generally happy with the compositions.

Ganyu - Burst Support Yelan - Off-field DPS Childe - Main DPS Diona - Support

The fact that this team started bc I ship Chilyu.... Anyway I wanted Childe and Ganyu together and apparently the way to go is permafreeze combo, at the time I was going to add Xingqiu for sub dps and Diona for double cryo and shield/healing but THEN Yelan was announced and I went "haha what if full archer team?" and here we are.

So yep, permafreeze, everyone supports or boosts the ginger and he goes wild on the field as he likes to do, simple. In the case the fatui menace is on cooldown Ganyu can pick up the slack and DPS by herself rather easily.

Rotation goes Ganyu E -> Ganyu Q -> Yelan Q -> Childe E and go wild -> Childe Q -> Diona E -> Diona Q -> Yelan E

Disco ball Ganyu is still Nuke Ganyu. Her burst lasts so long she's usually ready to go when the first one starts giving 100% uptime on that cryo. Can deploy her flower for some energy or to lure some enemies but doesn't always work that well. //cries in no Amos Bow or Acqua Simulacra Hunter's Path is usually recommended for Melt Ganyu but it's the only 5* I have and it's a crit bow idk, she used to have Viridescent Hunt. One could argue Diona's EM burst buff helps but it's minimal. 2pc Noblesse 2pc Blizzard for that burst and cryo buffs Atk/Cryo/Crit dmg as per usual offensive builds, she just gotta keep that cryo raining down.

Yelan is insanely amazing, seriously, her burst does so much dmg so quick and she's rather fun and easy to use and build. She's mostly a quick Q swap but her skill is incredibly useful also achieving that freeze when the whole field is raining ice, and easily doing 20k per thread. Favo Warbow for energy reasons, she's easily the team's battery with how fast and easy she procs the passive. 4pc Noblesse to boost her burst and other members. HP/Hydro/Crit as she scales off HP and to proc the bow and get those numbers. I'm quite happy with how much HP these pieces give her omg.

Ah yes the war criminal. Comes out to absolutely destroy everything on sight charging wildly and attacking violently, we love to see it. There are SO many blue numbers on screen once this guys starts lashing out with that riptide mechanic and the support of Yelan's and Ganyu's burst is insane. Enemies can't attack you if they can't move, and they all fall down quite easily... Sad crit rate but he never crits anyway, we know that. Rust for raw power being his BiS before Polar Star dropped, 4pc HoD for that sweet sweet hydro and atk bonus tailored for him and Atk/Hydro/Crit as per usual DPS builds. C1 gives me a bit more of leeway with his long cooldown but if anything is even alive by the time he's done the girls can pick up quick.

Let's not kid ourselves, this girl is the backbone of the entire team. Shielding, Healing. Ganyu battery and support. She's got it all. The rest would be dead without her, quite literally. Sac bow for ER and the passive that can allow for an extra shield uptime. 2pc Tenacity 2pc Maidens HP/HP/Healing for those sweet sweet heals. Her burst heals around 7k per tick enough to quickly patch up anyone who needs it (usually childe) while providing a mini version of Ganyu's cryo field that Yelan can use with her threads.

So much blue at once.

I love this team with a passion, they would be so funny to interact together I have lots of headcanons LOL. The 5* are crowned at least once but hey Diona's C6 sooo they're even. They also all have the dragonspine wings bc matchy matchy. Kinda hope to get them better bows one day (Yelan's and Diona's used to be swapped bc sac bow meant free C1 Yelan) but we'll see we'll see.

1000 paper cranes - supposed to be a piece of kakucho from tokyo revengers, part of his name translated to crane so i thought it would make sense to apply the legend of ‘if you fold 1000 paper cranes you’ll be granted one wish’.. he’s a very sweet boy that cares deeply about his friends and i think he’d definitely use the wish in a selfless way to better the life of another

passion and poetry - it was supposed to be a satosugu piece !!! i had an alternative title that was just ‘zero’ but that would be boring to send in lol.. the passion and poetry title came from the romantic ass shit they say to each other like it’s nothing sometimes i read over chapters from the manga where they’re talking to each other and i’m like.. u guys love each other it’s actually sickening. i ended up abandoning the wip because the composition i had in mind wasn’t working out LMAO but i might try again with a new concept.. i really wanna draw them together at least once

curse of the sun/blessing of the moon - a itafushi piece!! the title is a play on how itadori has a personality that shines as bright as the sun but he’s cursed (obv) and megumi being the moon (like he’s born on the shortest day of the year or something like that) and his name translates to blessings.. i have up on this one because again the composition was a struggle and i also ended up seeing somebody else draw a piece with a similar concept i had in mind so i was like damn.. it’ll look like i’m stealing now 🫢 but i do want to make a itafushi piece and use this title.. too good of a title to toss away

a good boy with no place - a piece of one of my OCs actually 🥳 i definitely plan on returning to this wip since i haven’t yet drawn this oc properly.. my oc universe thing is focused on the question “in what ways are people lonely and how does it affect them differently” and they’re all kinda tied together by a ghost character that’s lowkey a terrible person to turn to for advice but he’s just there to be a wicked and malicious thing lol. the oc in this piece is named dario and he’s the oldest, most gullible of my characters because he’s too nice of a person.. he’s poor and sells drugs and his romantic relationships never really go anywhere (but he’s a very sweet boy.. praying for him lol)

Hi there, not weird at all! I LOVE supporting fellow artists, I find their wonderful talent and dedication incredibly inspiring, seeing their beautiful works on my feed constantly reminds me to take a step back from my exhaustion and to simply remember why I love to draw to begin with: because it’s fun.

I’m usually really picky about artists I follow and their style, but when I find the ones that I enjoy, I go ALL OUT with my support. So without further ado, the following artists listed are those I am not only in love with, but those who I genuinely look up to.

@aku-jumbi - HQ!!, Various, You all had seen me share a BUNCH of their works on my blog, but it’s just because their art is so SOOOOOOOOO good. Your style leans toward photorealism, while still maintaining its painting-like quality, so if you had ever wondered how your favorite characters may look like irl, they’ve got you!!! Watching your speed painting is so fascinating, idk how you do it, but you’re always killing it every time (Like our process is so different, so it was really interesting to see how you approach your works you know?). This piece of Kei Tsukishima and Oikawa Tooru are two of my favorite works you’ve done!

@achieve-the-sun - HQ!!, Various, Let me start off by saying that I love Morghy’s art so much, that they are the first and only person I had ever commissioned from so far. They drew Keishin and I sooo adorably, it brings me so much joy to look at it on the daily. Your style reminds me of freshly baked cookies, or the warmth of bakeries, I can’t help but feel a sense of coziness whenever I look at your adorable artworks. This piece you did of Kageyama and Hinata was what had drawn me to you. Everything from your color choices, fluid gestures, and expressions are such a delight to look at!

@chaotickatts - HQ!! I am so in love with Katts, you all. I had never seen anyone draw like this, her style is really unique. I can go on forever about why I love your art, but one of the biggest things that drew me to your style is the way you draw bodies. I like the variation and realistic details you include, for instance, I absolutely adore the way you gave Sakusa more moles on his body, and the way you drew dad bod Osamu. Idk, I think there’s so many different types of body shapes and details out there, and it brings me joy to see you being so inclusive of them in your art.

@namusw - Hunter x Hunter. Was drawn to their Hunter x Hunter works and I don’t even watch/read that manga. Honestly, just check them out, I love everything about their works, they are also a killer at both traditional and digital styles. This piece of Hisoka, Illumi, and Chrollo was the one that made me fall in love.

@cranbearly - HQ!! I really adore the way they draw expressions and their coloring style (inspired me to attempt some flat coloring). This piece of Oikawa and Iwa made me follow them instantly. Expressions are so difficult to nail, and you’ve done such an amazing job conveying every emotion the characters are feeling, I’ve learned so much just from looking at your works, so thank you for blessing us with your craft.

@a-zebra-was-here - HQ!! Their art has a very carefree type of vibe and their coloring style brings me so much joy. I’ve really enjoyed your drawings of the Miyas’, this piece of the twin was what got me, and this other piece, the first image of young Miyas’ was so SO well done, I am in love with the way you colored that. 😻 

@erionmakuo - Various, dude....I want to cry, I don’t even know what to say, EVERY SINGLE PIECE of your artworks just BLOWS ME AWAY. The way you color your art is just so ethereal, the color schemes you had chosen, the way you mix the color of your lighting, textures, and everything in general, I can go on about this all day but just hop on to their blog and you will know exactly what I mean. I don’t have a particular piece that drew me in because I was blessed by all your works at once.

@uranarino - HQ!!, Your artworks bring me so much joy. If I have to describe your style like an experience in life, I would say it reminds me of how it’s like to fall in love with someone for the first time, if that makes sense. That sudden overwhelming feeling you get when you’re doing the most mundane things with someone you care about, only for time to stop as you realize how in love you are with them? Yea, your art captures that really well. These two pieces of Kuroo returning home with his groceries and of him taking a day nap with his cats was what had drawn me to you.

@queenoftheantz - HQ!!, Various, Their style is really unique, it kind of reminds me of an adventurous graphic novel or something you would see on Cartoon Network (idk, I thought of Chowder, but please, I really mean it as a compliment, I just really love the fun cartoon style you have.) They also do some animations! I really love this piece of Kyotani you did, the landscape and colors look SOO GOOD!!

@noodlemanjpg - HQ!!, Various, love LOVE your style and the way you draw expressions. I also really love how you color, your works “appear” effortless, but I know a lot of knowledge and precision is put into crafting it. This piece of Kuroo x Yaku being all cozy at the couch was what had drawn me to your blog, it makes me smile every time I look at it. Kuroo’s smitten expression is just...ahsdl;adjs I can’t help but smile with him.

@diabolism666 - HQ!!, c’mon, you can’t be in the HQ!! fandom without at least seeing one of their artworks. In fact, I had seen your art even before I’ve gotten into this show, and it was love at first sight, lemme tell ya. EVERY. SINGLE. THING. you had drawn are so good, it doesn’t even matter if it’s a more simplistic drawing or elaborate one, I am just always staring at it in awe. Thank you for being so incredibly active about it too, idk how, but you’ve produced so many amazing drawings and we’re just incredibly grateful for it. You draw some of best Tendou, Reon and Toshi out there. Your works have so much range, I really feel like you can draw ANYTHING hahaha.

@viria​ - Various, Viria *sobs* your works are so good. The way you draw faces and affection just gives me butterflies. I don’t even watch Fullmetal Alchemist, but this piece you did of Edward and Winry made me fall so deeply in love with your works. Your style has a certain softness to it, even when it is of an angry character, and I love it.

@nipuni​ - Various, another artist that I am incredibly nervous to tag because your works are just out of the world. You also seem so so nice and is always incredibly helpful whenever anyone sends you an ask. Just...I have the biggest crush on you and your works. EVERYTHING you had drawn is so stunning, and I mean it. The details, pose, composition, and coloring, it is just so perfect, I could pull up particular artworks, but I was really blessed by it all at once. If you are into fantasy-esque realistic looking portraits, check her out, she exudes so much knowledge and talent.

@hinamihere - HQ!!, Your artworks are soo stinkin adorable. Your color choices, expressions and the way you draw hair is just so cute, your art always bring the biggest smile to my face. This piece you did of Akaashi and Bokuto was what drew me to you, when I saw it, I “awhhh”ed so loudly, my hubby had to ask me what’s up, and when I showed it to him, he had the same reaction, even if he’d never seen Haikyuu!!

@oxxuri - BNHA, so SO good, the way you color, light, and draw is so beautiful. Every single detail, down to every lashes and strands of hair is so beautiful. You draw some of the most attractive faces I had ever seen, these drawings of Aizawa and Midoriya brings me so SOOOO much joy, and I don’t even know anything about BNHA.

@amezure - HQ!!, their comic strips always make my day, I was giving their blog a peep so I can pull up specific examples and my statement is instantly confirmed when I stumbled across their newest comic art of Kuroo and Bokuto and started laughing HAHA. 😂 Your self study sheets are incredibly informative and I find myself referencing them often, it’s so nice to see my favorite artists continue to polish their craft through endless amounts of studying, practice, and analysis. It serves as a constant reminder for myself to do the same. I love the way you draw people (check out this piece of Bokuto x Akaashi), but I ESPECIALLY love the way you draw animals. (Specifically anything that has to do with lil owl Bo and Akaashi 🥺)

@obobro - Avatar the Last Airbender, HQ!!, I am absolutely in love with the way you color and draw portraits. Your drawing and detailing has so much range; you have a series of hand drawings, and that alone already displays so SO much range. I was really drawn in by this drawing of Tsukki, Zuka + Azula, and of Sokka + Katara, you can really tell they were related and I love it so much. Your art has so much life to it, it’s truly fascinating.

when you get to this (massive) house with dozens of people, you ask Ryujin just who Namjoon is exactly

she tells you he’s the leader of the Beta Theta Sigma (see what I did there) fraternity

“don’t look so nervous ! he’s really nice and so are the other brothers. just be careful some of the other people around here, they can get a little wild with the alcohol.”

you walk in and you kinda want to go home

Ryujin probably noticed this because she stayed with you for a while

she introduced you to some friends of hers

you met a couple of the frat brothers

at first, you’re a little stiff because you were not expecting to dance in front of so many people

but Ryujin (and those vodka cranberry shots you took earlier) helped you loosen up

before you knew it, you droppin it down, pickin it up, throwin it back, and everything in between !

Name: Eliza, Lizz for short, Lizzie for friends

Department: Pure & Applied Sciences

LI: Raquel

Lizz is my main account, she is also the one that is probably the closest to my personality, she tries her best to be nice to everyone, but know how to impose herself when she feels something is not fair. She speaks fluent spanish since her family from her mother side is Mexican. She used to do cheerleading during middle school, but had to give up on it after a bad knee injury, so going to high school she choose to focus on her grades and she found a passion for math and physics, and seeing that she had potential, she thought it would be worth it to at least try to get a scholarship at the most prestigious school in the country, and that’s how she got into Arlington. She gets a bit nervous around Raquel, but flirts back as much as she can, slowly getting more confused whether is actually flirting or not.

Matt was created while I was really into the Mean Girls musical, so I decided I would make them have a crush on Tadashi while being friends with Karolina. They are probably one of my characters with the best relationship with Karolina, they are genuinely worried with her and they are a little bit relieved that she doesn’t is that angry with them about their crush on Tadashi.  They don’t have the best relationship with their parents and since they were able to get into Arlington but choose the Fashion department instead of the Business or Health, but they try their best to be proud of their kids. Arlington is somewhere they can be themselves, designing and creating pieces that they are passionate about. They are slowing getting out of their comfort zone and becoming friends with more people.

LI: Tegan

Harry was created to be a counterpoint to Tegan, so I thought that the opposite of a introvert nerd was a extrovert arts kid (keep in mind, no i didn’t knew Tyler’s personality or department yet). Anyway, he is the kind of person that is effortlessly good at what he does if he sets his goal into doing something, but he is so nice that no one gets angry at him for it. Dancing is his passion, but he also knows how to play drums and sometimes helps the other performing arts students (like Shawn, my other Performing Arts oc) with their compositions. He is the tallest out of all the ocs, but he is still shorter than Tegan, but is not a huge difference (Idk how inches and foot work and I won’t even try at this point).

Department: Business Commerce & Politics

LI: Claire

Charlie came from my realization that I would actually be at the Business department and not the Science one based on what I want to do when I graduate. They are professional and reliable, but are not that great on social skills, they’re rather shy and were really grateful when they were invited by Claire to hang out with her and Raquel and it definitely  helped for their crush slowly grow, they don’t really know how to deal with those feelings tho, they are just going with it and hoping for the best. After a rocky start their relationship, Tadashi and them got into a point where they are kind of friends, but really formal friends and until the whole Nakano scandal they weren’t really vulnerable to each other.

Department: Fine Arts

LI: Neha

Janet was another person that was created as a counter to her LI, Neha is very organized and Janet is very chaotic and messy. She is from a small town and the Academy is very different from everything she knows, so she was really impressed at first by the diversity, she was not used to it, but she feels blessed she gets to have this opportunity to meet so many different people. She usually jokes about how the arts department is full of nice and fancy materials and she was used to make it work with cheap materials back at home. She usually have some trace of paint on her face or clothes (but she is trying to keep it clean because the uniform is way too expensive to have paint on) and her hands are always with some colorful pen marks. She is described as talented by people around her, but she’s been drawing since she was a small child and works really hard to get on the level of people are Arlington. She is a little bit scared of Karol, but she is always nice to her and is genuinely concerned about both her health and how her situation affect Neha. I don’t know when, I don’t know how, but someday Janet will give Neha an original design for a print.

Krys was created when I realized I really liked Al and that I wanted someone who could like, work out and be athletic with him (is this what athletic ppl do? idk, can’t relate). He is a short king, probably the shortest among my ocs, he plays volleyball as a libero (and yeah i decided that literally this week bcuz i rewatched haikyuu and it inspired me). Alistair makes him feel all kinds of things and he is so sweet and nice, I can imagine him and Lizz complaining together about how hot ppl from Athletics are. He doesn’t really like Karolina, he thinks she is rude and prejudiced and it took a little while form him and BIanchi (the other Athletics oc) because of that, he ends up warming up to her after the Nakano Scandal because she seems very genuine about her feelings for Tadashi and he can respect that.

When I was thinking about Angel I was just like, pretty and fun, a little bit edgy. He is pretty in a kinda unconventional way, too feminine for most of the male models demand but he choose to remain authentic to himself (And also he will never be able to have a six pack and he accepted it). He probably heard about Axel before (I mean, he is a sensation, isn’t he?), but didn’t actively look for him, he consider himself a more indie kind of guy. In the process of falling for Axel he did question himself if he was not falling in love out of interest, but he soon got over it, because he couldn’t avoid the feelings that were growing.

Bianchi was created using “jock” as the first thing that came to my mind about her. After a little research I figured Bianchi is actually a surname, not a first name, so I decided she doesn’t vibe with her first name and she decided she would like it better to be called by her last name. She is kinda cocky, she knows at what she is good at and is very confident. She works with Karolina because she won’t let her put her down without fighting back and she knows what she has to offer, Karol would eventually see her as a equal and Bianchi is very weak for pretty girls, she would probably also flirt a lot with Karol, just to piss her off a little bit. She hopes to become a professional swimmer, but she also does weightlifting as a hobby.

Yuri was created because I needed someone who was around the conversation about Arlignator to be into the Health Department to actually do the Arlignator and undertsand the reference. It’s hard for me to relate to her because I would never in my life go for a health area, so it’s hard for me to develop her. But, I did develop her family (cuz u know, i needed to be able to talk about her in someway amirught), so her father have a Japanese heritage and her mother have a Chinese one, her dad is not that in touch with his heritage because he was raised by his single white mother, and her mother’s family on the other side is very connected with the Chinese culture, and that’s why despite the Japanese name, Yuri speaks fluent Mandarin. Ellie is someone who takes her a little out of her comfort zone, and that works for her because she always wanted to be a little adventurous but never had any stimulation for it, and now she have it (with a little crush as a bonus).

LI: Tyler

Shawn was heavily influenced by AJR, which is a band I listened a lot when I started to play SE. He is a songwriter and a composer (no, i don’t know the difference, I’m sorry ppl who know music I’ve failed y’all) and he wants to make music that are more than love and sex and still have a kinda pop feeling about it. He is the most confident after Bianchi out of my ocs and he is very restless. Him a Tyler hit it off from the beginning since they have a similar sense of humor and sometimes he feels like he understands a little better all the love songs out there, and even promising himself he wouldn’t sing about love (a la Hayley Williams, but maybe one or two actually are actually created.

Well since you’re practically TWISTING MY ARM

I’m only halfway through the new one but it is literally just like the first one style-wise and that’s what we’re gonna talk about so here we go. Gonna start out with some compliments.

Lara Jean is so adorable. I like looking at her face. She is way too cute for that Noah Centennial lol

She also wears super cute outfits

The movie has a pleasing look and overall aesthetic

Ok so that’s out of the way. Onto the more negative critiques. The movie just feels sooooo... bleh. It feels like it was created on an indie budget by amateur filmmakers. It gives the illusion of being a high quality movie without actually being well made. Does this makes sense? It’s sooo hard to articulate. And I’m not like a film expert but I do have knowledge of production and I’m gonna try and use that knowledge to speak about this.

The cinematography and composition is terrible. Like everything Is static. A bunch of still, flat shots. Rarely anything dynamic or interesting. It’s like someone was like “Point the camera at Lara Jean. Ok now point it at Peter. Ok now “ but like not even in a good way??? Like there’s nothing wrong with shot reverse shot but like it’s not even done in the standard good way that like you’re basic TV show would have?? And just a bunch of nice looking establishing shots. Like they’ll show some stock footage of San Francisco or whatever to make it feel big I guess but instead I just feel nothing. It just frames everything in the most boring way possible. Like one of the first things you learn in film is that straight on shots are flat and boring. They CAN be done well like Wes Anderson but it is. Not being done like that lol. The camera never does anything to hold our interest.

The acting and dialog are also.... terrible. And it kind of feeds into the pacing and overall tone of the movie. Most of the time it feels like they’re either reciting expositional dialog or improvising casual conversation in an effort to seem realistic. But instead I am just constantly being taken out of the movie. Never once do I feel immersed in this film. I’m pretty much always thinking “Lara Jean said a thing.... ok wait 3 seconds..... now we switch to Peter! He makes a face for 5 seconds before finally saying something.... ugh that was so cringey, why did he even say that. Are they trying to seem hip.” It’s like they’re acting in little bubbles and not at each other. And the pacing in dialog and story just make me feel utterly bored this entire time.. Like it’s taking a lot of effort for me to finish the next 40 mins of this movie. Also I really just do not like Noah Centineo. I don’t understand why he stars in every Netflix film. I don’t think he’s very cute, and he’s always typecast as a douchebag-y type guy that I hate. He has 0 chemistry with Lara Jean imo. Then again no one in this movie does. 

I had all these thoughts during the first movie but I kinda hoped since it was so popular they would put more effort into this one but.... nope. It’s exactly the same. For the record I have never read the books and I assume they are better. The only real reason I’m watching it is bc my girl Marina has a song at the end. I love the romance genre but like it has to be done WELL y’all. Also if u like these movies then thats great! They are not for me lol. I just needed to get this off my chest bc i feel like no one talks about this movie critically lol. Also someone who knows more about film can probably articulate my feelings better.

Thoughts on the FMA live action movie (part 2 of 2) (spoilers)

- There are 23 minutes left in the movie and things are escalating very quickly

- the army is here now?

- Hawkeye has a gun. The true otp

- these zombie guys are kinda easy to take down given all the work put into making them

- lust just got impaled!!!!

- but she handled it like a champ and opened her chest for shits and giggles

- lust is getting philosophical but more importantly she mentioned there maker! Are they bringing in father in the last 15 minutes of the movie? Will the movie be a 2 parter? There’s no way they can get father in here now.

- Ed is doing an intellect with the homonculi!

- ENVY IS DOWN. I REPEAT. ENVY IS DOWN.

- AL JUST RIPPED OFF LUSTS FINGERS WITH THE POWER OF ALCHEMY AND BROTHERLY LOVE. I also forgot that Al is still recovering from his “maybe I’m not real” drama because the time span for this movie is so SHOOOORT.

- Lust is burnin real good.

- OH MY GOD MUSTANG JUST REACHED INTO HER CHEST AND TOOK THE STONE. SAVAGE. Meanwhile Lust just pulled a Barbosa (black pear barbosa) death and decided to get all touchy feely.

- everyone is sooo intense and oh yeah gluttony is still hanging around

- ED IS USING THE PHILOSOPHERS STONE WHAT?

- HES AT THE PORTAL OF TRUTH TO GET AL ALREADY?!?!?!?!?!

- HE CHANGED HIS MIND JUST AS HE WAS ABOUT TO HAND OVER THE STONEEEEEEEEEEE

- Al is being mature and deep about not using the stone but there’s only 10 minutes left so how are you going to get your body back?!?!

- “Did I look good?” Al has his priorities in order.

- “Am I taller than you?” “yes” AWWW that was so sweet

- the sun is rising and wait is it ending?

- okay Ed is on a train and there’s 7 minutes and I think its gonna end soon.

- okay he promised to get Al’s body back and it ended. I guess it’s going to be a two parter movie thing.

~~~~Parting thoughts~~~~

- overall it was pretty good. The visuals were great from the effects, costume design, and shot composition. Acting was really good but since they focused so much on heavy events it made the characters seem much more moody than they actually are- which isn’t really a product of bad writing as it is a product of having to fit so many events into a couple hours of movie time.

- Okay as for plot adjustments. So as I was watching this movie it seemed to be going the course of Brotherhood rather than the first FMA, so I was expecting the plot to reach certain points or meet certain expectations that it did not always fulfill. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it did leave some things open ended, which I’m guessing will be wrapped up in a second movie. For example Ishval was mentioned twice, but there was no scar character. Also, the last 45 minutes of the movie felt a bit rushed and I think it was because they spent a lot of time on the Shou Tucker story line, and since they spent so much time on him they had to reuse him for other plot points because they didn’t give themselves the room for other characters.

I suppose overall I wasn’t quite sure how much they were going to use the old plot and at time it felt unclear how true they wanted to stay to the source material. I felt that they strayed too far away from the manga and brotherhood to try and include the major events from it because everything is so interconnected that if you have one element from the manga then it comes with a ton of other idea that the film makers would have to include for the sake of continuity. So I think that they might have done well to just rebel from their source material and go in their own direction with it rather than struggle to include enough stuff from the original to appease returning fans. I also think by creating your own story with the FMA basic concept, it avoids confusing new viewers since a lot is left unexplained in the movie, but returning fans already know.

Anyways, although I wasn’t completely satisfied with the plot pacing, I felt that it was actually a really good movie. I’m still holding out for a second movie to wrap up some of the unfulfilled plot holes that I talked about. But if a second movie never comes I suppose we can just return to the anime ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

so it is upon us. every studyblr's favorite time of year. no, not going back to school (though i guess some of you enjoy this?), but getting new stationery/school supplies! here i've compiled 2 lists (one for hs, one for college) of some essentials you might consider getting for the coming school year (and some reasons and some links). read til the end if you want some tips for getting the best prices/saving money! xoxo, m

high school:

1. spiral notebooks. i personally prefer notebooks to binders. they have smaller rings, which comes in handy as a lefty, and provide a layer of "padding" that you don't get if you just write on a single sheet. i think it makes for smoother writing. you can still tear out pages (unlike composition books) which i also like. accel (the staples brand) makes good, plastic cover notebooks with a nice plastic pocket for less than mead/five star, so i go for those.

2. binders. personally i use these for compiling study guides i've made + other resources. you can also take notes/keep your notes in these if you prefer being able to rearrange (which isn't an option in notebooks). i personally prefer having a few 1/2 inch or 1 inch binders because they are more portable and i don't put much stuff in binders, but some people like to keep everything in a 3 inch one, it's all up to preference!

3. folders. these are great for organizing handouts and you can get one for each class to stay organized. i was always a little too lazy to punch holes in things, so this was my binder substitute. if you get the ones with prongs, you can also make little "booklets" like you can in binders, so i also used these for study guides. some other types of folders include:

>>> multipocket folders: great if you don't want an individual folder for each class

>>> expanding file folders: these are a little bulkier, but you can still bring them to class if you choose. another great binder alternative (especially if you like all your things in one place). i also use mine to file old school work and keep it at home.

4. a planning system. i'm sure you've seen these all over studyblr, but they are really useful. keeping track of important dates+assignments will make your life a lot easier. you can use a planner or a bullet journal or whatever you like. here are some options:

>>>planners: lilly pulitzer (super pretty for someone who wants something decorative but is too lazy to do it themselves. also super expensive so you can guilt yourself into using it), erin condren (these seem pretty popular? also pricey though they look lil cheaper through staples?), happy planner (still quite cute+customizable, but a little cheaper at $20ish. you can get it at michaels so use that 40% off coupon)

>>>>>>>>for even more affordable options, try target or staples :) it doesn't have to be expensive to keep you organized! (i've linked cheaper options from each store)

>>> bullet journals: moleskine (cream paper, thread bound, hard/soft cover, dotted/gridded/lined/blank paper), leuchtturm 1917 (same as moleskine but with only hard cover and an index in front -- i've linked my current bujo), muji dot grid notebook (more affordable, spiral, white paper)

>>>>>>>>or just use whatever notebook you have laying around/want to use

5. calculator. depending on the level of math/science you're taking, you'll either want a graphing (the model i used and loved, though idt they sell them new anymore) or scientific calculator.

6. pencil case. pretty self explanatory. i prefer canvas bc of the stretch (unfortunately idt they sell the one i have anymore so i found a standard one) here's some stuff to put in it (links are to personal favs):

>>> pencils (mechanical | regular)

>>> an eraser (these are annoyingly hard to find)

>>> dark blue/black pens (i personally only use black). favs include: pentel energel, zebra f-301, bic round stic

>>> more colorful pens (tbh not totally necessary). more favs: bic atlantis, staedler triplus, pilot g-tec

>>>>>> colored pencils are a great, cheaper alternative to colored pens if you're on a tight budget. or crayola supertips!

>>> highlighters (so i don't actually use these i just color code with pen or underline, but you might want them) i linked some pastel ones from amazon (since they seem so trendy) that are a fair bit cheaper than the more popular brands

>>> white out (i prefer tape bc no dry time. also don't really use this much...)

>>> ruler (i love my little folding ruler from taiwan)

>>> post its (notes + flags/tabs)

7. a backpack. get one that will last over a super cheap, "cute" one from f21. definitely a better investment. i used my jansport for 8 years before getting a new backpack this year (but that wasn't because the bag was worn out). you'll be carrying a bunch of books, so get something with good back + shoulder padding!

8. water bottle. ok not really school supplies, but still very necessary. stay hydrated! (unlike me, the shriveled prune)

college/university:

you'll probably need all (or at least most) of the above. here are a few extras:

1. laptop. pretty self explanatory, but you can do sooo much on these. look up answers, watch lectures, take notes, do hw, write essays, you know the drill. (link to the one i have -- not cheap -- which is no means necessary)

>>> and obviously bring/have a charger

2. external battery. you'll probably be out and about much longer than you were in high school and having a portable way to charge your phone is a lifesaver.

3. flash drive/hard drive. if you have a really important presentation, i wouldn't just rely on emailing it to yourself. also, if you do a lot of your work on your computer, backing files up is probably a good idea (hey m, you should implement your own advice...)

4. dry erase board+marker. the board is good for studying for exams/doing practice problems without using too much paper and the marker is good for (use with the board, obv) when the library study rooms have no markers aka always.

5. smallish stapler. i print so much stuff around campus and there isn't always a stapler. having one i can carry around is amazing. (i also don't like the super baby ones so *i think* this is the one i have)

saving money:

1. keep an eye out for sales: this is obviously a good way to save money. knowing what you want and looking for sales is the best way to go.

2. use coupons: i know a lot of major school supply stores (target, walmart, staples etc) don't do this, but if your local store does, go on the hunt for those coupons.

3. michaels. kinda tied to the above point, but michaels always has coupons. you won't be able to get a lot of stuff there but sometimes you can find planners/notebooks/sticky notes and colored pens/pencils. they have weird stuff in weird places, so be thorough.

4. marshalls/tj maxx + the like. these places are great for water bottles, backpacks, organizational items as well as cue notebooks+planners. the last 2 will always (at least usually) be more expensive than your generic notebooks, but sometimes cheaper that the regular, super cute stuff.

5. amazon. they can sometimes have cheaper prices than in store retailers and also have a huge selection of stuff.

uh so here’s 10 facts about me i guess

1. As you all most likely know because I talk about it in the tags way too much, I used to be really obsessed with the Goosebumps series despite not being alive the ‘90s. In second grade, I read literally every single Goosebumps book they had within the two libraries in my town, including the Choose Your Own Scare, the Goosebumps 2000, and even the Horrorland series even though they weren’t even that good. I took out VHS tapes from the library of episodes of the Goosebumps TV series. My eight year old self was dead set on becoming a horror writer because of these books. It was the first thing I remember being very passionate about. 

2. So adding onto that, I really liked reading as a kid, I know a lot of people did, but I used to check out like 15 books out at a time at the library because I consumed books like crazy fast. I even got into a verbal argument with a kid on the school bus on whether or not the Magic Tree House books were good or not because I was that much of a nerd. 

3. I’ve been doing school choir since I was in fourth grade because we were required to do it in elementary school. I decided to stick with it because I discovered I wasn’t tone deaf and it was fun of course because we were literally singing show tunes and christmas carols and shit like that in elementary school, not mature choir compositions in latin. now i know better, and that i’m not really that amazing at singing, my voice isn’t really that strong and if i haven’t warmed up i can get really pitchy, and also choir is not that fun anymore because it’s a lot of sight-singing (which i suck at sooo bad) trying to remember dynamics and tricky rhythms at the same time, your choir teacher stopping 70035664 times because that ONE person is off pitch, and tbh i would not do it but i’ve been doing it so long and i’m too lazy to tell my guidance counselor, but maybe i won’t do it senior year so i can actually take a fun elective like graphic design or something

4. oh and also i’m a soprano 2 in choir, vocally i suppose i’m a mezzo-soprano? i did soprano 1 one year and that is how i realized that i cannot hit a high c. i’ve never been an alto although i’ve always secretly wanted to, just i’ve been singing the melody for so long y’know

5. speaking of weird obsessions with books, i had an outsiders phase which i’d really rather much forget. in sixth grade i thought it was so fucking deep, omg sunsets and reading books wow much relate!111! i thought ponyboy was the shit, i watched the movie several times, i looked up memes of the book on the internet, i memorized that fucking robert frost poem, etc. honestly looking back on it why did i even consider thinking ponyboy was the best character when like johnny cade clearly deserved better hello?

6. i have very bizarre dreams surrounding band members or just bands in general. there’s the brendon urie flaming hot cheeto death one, where…well i dreamed brendon urie died from a flaming hot cheeto kinda self explanatory. the oasis theme park one, where the band members of oasis thought it would be a good idea to open a theme park centered around oasis and do adverts for it despite the fact that they’ve been broken up for almost a decade. this ended in me kidnapping liam gallagher and crashing a car into a hill. also the one where i dreamed that matt helders from arctic monkeys got arrested for like holding illegal property or something idk it wasn’t really made clear in the dream and i was somehow at the court case. and the one where i got into a fistfight with my 9th grade science teacher over a vinyl copy of blur’s leisure. those are just some from a dream journal i used to keep, i’m sure i’ve had more that i’ve now forgotten because i never wrote them down. 

7.  in elementary school we did a project called pumpkin presidents and you basically had to do research on a president and bring in a pumpkin that you decorated to look like the president you researched. i did mine on james madison and i have to say my pumpkin looked pretty good with its cheesecloth wig 

8. does anybody remember that show kickin it on disney xd because that was my shit lmao

9. i’m running out of facts because i’m an uninteresting person,,um i have an older half sister named amanda who i have absolutely zero contact with because she lives on the opposite coast and i was never really told much about her by my dad. i have met her though, when i was like 8 years old but i don’t remember much besides her buying me these origami sheets from chinatown in LA. she’s the closest thing i have to a sibling 

10. unlike a lot of people, i really didn’t grow up listening to oldies and stuff, my parents are immigrants so all i had as a kid was cambodian music which i hated. my first exposure to music was through what was popular on the radio at the time (i really started paying attention when i was around 7 or 8 and stuff like Dynamite and Tik Tok and Hey Soul Sister was popular and shit) i didn’t really like get into music until seventh grade and a song called My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark was getting radio play and i thought it was really cool so i looked it up at home, and it just…it all went downhill from there. i guess i’m kind of over fandoms now and even though i’m not super into fall out boy like i used to be, i kind of owe them that, because it it wasn’t for that song, i probably wouldn’t consider listening to music as a passion, and would most likely still be listening to whatever was on the radio

October Study Challenge

Sup guys, I just found this while scrolling through. So I'll hit the first 12 super light to catch up!

1. Me: I'm a 3rd year Optometry student, so in 1.5 years I'll be a doctor! OD specifically. In the USA Optometry is a doctoral program, I know it's not in most other countries so I figured I'd clear that up. Currently studying: Ocular Pathology III (retina), Pediatrics II (strabismis), Peds Lab II, Geriatrics, Contact Lens II, Glaucoma, and Essientials of Leadership (elective), while in clinic 12 hours a week. Goals? Catch up on studying for boards, get my 4th year rotations confirmed, continue to pass my classes.

2. TEA! Nearly every morning. Rough/long days need coffee at midday, but it makes me jittery so I try to avoid it.

3. Today's set up.

Kinda boring but it gets the work done.

4. Doodles? In class when I'm bored and have my pro pen out. Otherwise, I type notes to future me who i studying for the exam like "you didn't pay attention here, rip!"

5. Favorite stationary: I'm left handed, so anything that doesn't major smear is GOLDEN to me. Foray Callisto 20 pc colored pens has worked well. So do Sharpie pens (no bleed through), but I write too hard and the tips bend. Composition books = no spirals or rings to work around. Graph paper is also very good. Or just plain computer paper for complete freedom™

6. Outside. I totes already have my photos of studying outside on here 👌

7. Morning routine. Alarm goes off at 6a.m., I'm out of bed between 6:05 and 6:15 depending on how rough studies went the night before. Water, daily vitamin, bathroom, make bed, change to school/clinic clothes, brush teeth/do hair, breakfast (Cheerios), TEA, feed dog, pack lunch, in my car and to school by 6:40 max. Ideal wake up is like 7:30 pls

8. Plan. I use google calendar to keep all my tests, assignment, clinic rotations organized. I use tumblr for weekend to-do lists. Sticky notes for long term things on my window.

9. Uhhhh I live for autumn and we JUST got our first cold snap #bless

10. Study music. I'm cheap and use YouTube mix playlists. George Ezra has gotten me through summer and till now. I switch up with classical and movie soundtracks. If I need soft: study jazz. If I need to stay awake: dad rock, electro-swing, and ragtime. (I've accepted who I am and my horrible taste, it's fine.)

11. Cold weather food: mom's chili. ANY potato soup, that's sooo good, yes.

12. Handwriting. I have only one type and it just deteriorates over the day and semester. If I need to write recommendations for a patient or communication to a pcp, I'll write slower and neater. Otherwise, I just interpret my scrawl later.

Top 10 Favourite KPop Releases Jan - July 2017 Part 2

Now here’s my top 5 favourite KPop releases of January to July 2017. For No. 10 to no. 6, go here! 

Just a quick heads up, everything here is my own opinion, and is by no means factual. 

Well then, let’s go to the top 5!

5. Movie - BTOB

I think what I particularly enjoyed about this was how the individuality and role of each member of BTOB really stood out in this MV. They all took on roles suitable to their own personalities and characters, and the line distribution was also pretty good! I felt like everyone really shone in their own ways be it in their vocals, their quirkiness, their swag, their visuals, their acting skills etc. The song itself is a very old-school sound. It was as though you were sitting down and watching a marathon of old classic movies. Vocally, the boys always deliver too. The song itself is pretty different and unique from other recent popular KPop music offered by other boy groups, so it was nice change of pace and style. One of the members, Ilhoon, was the one in charge of being the one who composed the song, and it was a job well done indeed! I do think the song’s hook was a little weak though. But as always, they boys really made up for it with their strong and solid vocals and rap! That made the song really pleasant and entertaining even just to listen to!

4. Not Today - BTS

First of all, let’s talk about this music video’s cinematography. Love or hate BTS, the effects here are incredible, and this was just really filmed sooo well. Concept-wise I don’t think it was that original, but the boys and their slick dance moves and dance crew could make anyone gape in awe.  While I think out of all the BTS songs, this song does have the most punch and impact to it, if it wasn’t accompanied by the music video and dance choreography, I don’t think the song would have been as powerful. As a standalone, I do enjoy the song and think that is good. But I also think it does get slightly repetitive. While it has everything to be a catchy KPop hit, I wouldn’t really call the composition and arrangement anything out of the ordinary if that makes sense. Lyrics were decent though, and the message was good. The song fulfilled its purpose to be a song that would be a hit with audiences, but I actually find its visual aspects like the stunning MV and the dance choreography to be more striking and memorable than the song itself alone. That’s why this release just fell short of my top 3.

3. Yesterday - Block B

Top 3 was honestly a tough call for me. This music video was meant to have a comical feel to match the comical mood of the song, and it really delivered in that! But what I loved most about this release was the song itself. From the first second of this song until the end, I found myself completely hooked to this song. While songs like Movie and Not Today were really good enjoyable songs, when it comes to the hook, both wane completely to this song. The fun, upbeat tone of this bubblegum pop song could really make anyone smile. It’s such a feel-good song!! What a jam!!! Too bad, this song was really only released digitally, so it didn’t get as much media attention. Also, it wasn’t Block B’s leader, Zico, who composed this song. He did help out with it I think but the one who was the song’s composer this time Park Kyung, the guy who starts the song. And really hats off to him because it’s been a while since I’ve got a song stuck in my head like that after only 20 seconds into it haha.

2. GOOD NIGHT - Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher are actually fairly new to me, but the moment I listened to this song, I knew it was going to be one of my top jams. I thought this was very unique of them because while you can hear songs like this in Japan for anisongs, they are a lot rarer in Korea. I love the rock, badass style of the song and the intriguing MV to go with it! They also had another song before this called Chase Me, but I thought Good Night had a stronger hook, and it also came off more dramatically imo.  I love their gap too. Visually, they look like they could be a typical Korean girl group, but they are a lot more badass than that. It’s just everything about this works to accentuate the song itself from the song’s melody, arrangement, MV colour scheme, the girls’ expressions, and even just the way the instruments were utilised to create such a masterpiece. Tbh I actually think it’s even better than some of the anisongs out there. The production level of the song is just amazing. A dark, catchy song with powerful vocals and a kickass dance. Totally my kind of jam!

1. ANTI - ZICO feat. G. Soul

Hahah one creepy MV after another. But this time we have ZICO from Block B with a solo piece. Even this MV started kinda eerily like the Dreamcatcher MV lol. Ok real talk though, I just discovered this song recently, and I was mindblown. I don’t usually spazz and make a lot of noise about KPop lyrics because I never really find them that impressive, but once in a while, ZICO writes something and my jaw literally DROPS.

Just looking at the lyrics, I was amazed at how real and raw the lyrics were. Everything he depicted and wrote in the song I’ve actually seen “fans/antis” like that...and it’s true how there are times fans to a certain extent as the customers treat artists/idols like “products” they expect to satisfy their needs and expectations rather than human beings. Even if they are trying their best to please their audience, these “fans” will always find something negative to bring the artist/idol down. It’s sad but it’s true. 

Some people may think of ZICO lyrics as just an angry rant to the world which I guess in some ways it is. But I also think it’s a really realistic portrayal of what they as celebrities in the showbiz have to go through, and how they sometimes have to suck it up if they want to survive. It’s so profound and something I feel myself being able to really connect to.

As for the song itself, the moment it starts with G. Soul’s vocals, my eyes widened. This is my first time listening to him, but his voice sounds so good in this; it’s like a perfect fit?! Then ZICO came up with his rap, and I’m not that knowledgeable about rap, but his sense of rhythm always is such a pleasure to listen to. Both this song’s melody and rhythm is just so dramatic and addictive - this was just such an amazing collab. I saw some people comment this, but the feel does really remind me of something Eminem. 

The music video itself was so really interesting to watch and I really liked all the symbolisms that seemed to be going on in the MV. It was 4 minutes long but the song really went by way too fast for me. I don’t know whether there’s gonna be anything later in this year that’s going to be capable of topping this, but it’s gonna be very hard since this song really ticked all the boxes for me. ZICO really outdid himself this time!
