i just rewatched The Truman Show and like. god. what a fucking movie. one of the movies of all time tbh.

the detail i just realized that im the most insane about is that when Truman leaves the Dome™ he has a bruise on his face

the most recognizable face in the world. christof has marketed him so much. his face is so important to christof's show, it is the show, there's the women with the pillow of his face, his face is plastered all over the technical difficulties screen-

but it's bruised. the last shot aired has their golden boy bruised, battered, stepping into the darkness and away from the cameras with the show's symbol very visibly... broken isn't the right word but it's the best one i've got

and it's a bruise that he has because of christof. he got it when he was being thrown around in the storm production started to try and get him back into town. christof gave him that bruise and it meant the last shot of his golden boy wasn't perfect

ok one more post about the truman show. if this movie was made today it'd be criticized for being too on the nose, but it's not even about what it'd be about today

if you made the truman show in 2025, it'd be about family vlog channels and people posting their lives for all to see and parasocial relationships, but that wasn't even a thing in 1998. in 1998 it's a movie about stagnation and accepting your surroundings, about becoming complacent and not working towards bettering yourself

and it's so unsubtle about that, christof basically says that in the interview with mark markson or whatever his name is.

"Christof, may I ask you, why do you think that uh, Truman has never come close to discovering the true nature of his world until now?" "We accept the reality of the world with which we're presented. It's as simple as that."

and like. on the surface that's about reality confusion and not looking through the cracks or whatever but you look a little more and it's like.... that's not really about truman the guy, it's about truman the character, some guy who works in insurance who's not really trying to get to fiji, who wants a break and a vacation and to get out of his hometown but isn't really trying that hard and then you're hit with-

He can leave at any time. If it was more than just a vague ambition, if he was absolutely determined to discover the truth, there's no way we could prevent him from leaving. What distresses you, really, caller, is that ultimately, Truman prefers his "cell," as you call it.

which like. holy shit dude. if that's not an on the nose commentary about complacency i dunno what is. like sure it's about truman trying to get out of the Dome™ but it's also about the insurance broker who's not trying to get to fiji, the vending machine stocker who's staying in his hometown, the nurse who's too worried about finances to see the world.

there's so many layers of commentary yet none of the themes it was made with are what it'd be about today and that's. very interesting

gertrude's recordings are interesting. she kinda seems a lot more on top of everything than jon is, and i dont know how much of that is experience or..... so me t h i ng else?
