Thoughts on DBS: Broly after seeing it in theaters, taking a break from Dragon Ball all together for a long while there and then returning:

Yeah I watched Return of Cooler and Wrath of the Dragon with my sister before we watched DBS: Broly all in the same night back to back to back and I can successfully say the hype train for DBS: Broly for me is FINALLY done because I was FINALLY able to point out things I didn’t like.

Especially after coming right out of watching those two movies from Z that same night as well as watching a few episodes of the original Dragon Ball series with her a few nights prior, Goku seemed so very out of character. I was actually getting upset at him and was reminded of why I left the DB fandom in the first place.

(I’m really really sorry but I can’t put a read more here cause mobile on iOS is STUPID and I didn’t expect to throw up so many opinions and words ahhhh I’ll tag it with ‘long post’ though so I hope that’s okay)

Dragon Ball Super Goku is not in character. And the movie version highlights this weird luke-warm attempt, for me. Like the writers were trying but what they ended up coming out with was a weird watered down version of the IDEA of who Goku is supposed to represent in the modern understandings of his character rather than any actual attempt to get his character consistent with everything that came before BoG.

It was as if the writers involved (including Toriyama) just took each other’s word for it as far as who Goku is. So we come out with this “child-like wonder that never grows up.” character instead of the mature result of a completed coming-of-age story.

And yeah sorry everyone but after watching and geeking out at the animation in the previously mentioned Z movies (especially the storyboarding and camera movements for Wrath of the Dragon) just an hour or so prior to watching the fight with Broly, I have to say that said fight in the latest movie was all about trying to be as flashy and fancy as possible (including this weird but admittedly ballsy attempt to go with a Broly POV akin to an FPS for a short period of time) without actually putting any care in the world to making it easy to follow and understand as an audience member.

The art style is nice, but nothing in the animation really stood out to me as especially impressive without flashy effects being involved.

In fact, there were quite a few scenes where I felt like they overdid it on the amount frames it took to get from pose A to pose B and I just. didn’t. like. it.

And look, hot take, the scene where Goku’s trying to convince Vegeta to fuse with him - when I first saw it in theaters I was sure that I agreed with everyone that the animator involved could do no wrong and that the art style shift was necessary to the animation style.

But the reality is - it just wasn’t. As far as the movement was concerned, none of the characters in that particular scene did any movement that was especially exciting to me or even that different from the rest of the film. It was all pretty basic to Dragon Ball Super: Broly to me. They just were off-model. I’m sorry.

I know this community worships the ground that animator works on but I just didn’t see anything especially exciting. My sister can attest to this - while we were watching Return of Cooler and Wrath of the Dragon I was geeking out. With the former, it was the use of anticipation and settling while with the later it was the storyboarding. Like when Vegeta fights Hirudegarn there’s a sequence where the camera stays on Vegeta as he moves around the beast before it eventually zooms in on him and ahhhhhhhhhhh it’s so nice just thinking about it.

That sequence that I’m referencing is the kind of storyboarding style that I whole-heartedly believe Toei was trying to go for the ENTIRE fight in DBS:B but it was just too much too fast. I’m not saying it was impossible to follow but anyone who says the other previously mentioned films had fights with storyboarding on par or even worse than the fight in question either doesn’t know what they’re talking about or is straight up lying.

And I’m gonna say it - I’m gonna say it - STOP ZOOMING IN ON EYES AND MOUTHS SO DAMN MUCH HOLY SHIT IT JUST KEPT HAPPENING CAN YOU LITERALLY DO ANYTHING ELSE IN YOUR STORYBOARD?!?! Things like that are supposed to be a novelty used either to make the audience member uncomfortable or laugh depending on the overall tone of the scene but when you do it over and over and over and over again it loses the rarity that gives it that effect and it just becomes annoying.

I tried keeping my mouth shut over it the first couple times but by the fifth or sixth time it happened I just - AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it ticked me off, man. Like - ticked off the animation part of my mind the way Goku’s character writing ticked off the analysis part of my mind.

It was annoying af.

Okay but back to the writing.

I loved everything that came before the time jump to “modern day” (for lack of a better phrase coming to mind) despite what others might say.

I’ve heard, understand and respect all the criticisms of Minus and even the added parts with little Broly and Paragus, but I just can’t bring myself to be bothered by those things. I don’t necessarily disagree with the more widely accepted complaints but that doesn’t mean I agree with them, either.

I see both sides of this so I guess you could say I’m neutral? But at the same token I do REALLY enjoy it all so I can’t bring myself to think of myself as entirely neutral on the subject, either.

Vegeta and Raditz being as tiny as they were made sense but also kinda weirded me out though, not entirely sure why.

Anyways, I think that’s pretty much all I wanted to say.

Feel free to send me asks and stuff about my thoughts on this. I’m not letting myself get angry over it anymore.

I just enjoy sharing my thoughts on these types of things and apprently Dragon Ball is the only series to REALLY inspire this deep kind of analysis while everything else I’ve attempted to write up in this style just kind falls flat.

Not entirely sure why that is but maybe that’s a set of musings for another day.

Sorry to bother you, but I keep seeing posts about a future Goten AU and I keep getting really curious! However, when I try to find links to anything about it I end up at some abandoned URLs.

some disclaimers im getting most of this from an old draft i had written about the au, i havent watched the specific scenes in dbz and dbs that these are based on in well over 2+ years so i dont remember the timeline of events that well so im sorry if some of it just straight up doesnt make sense lol

this whole thing did start out as an excuse to replace the romantic scenes with mai in dbs with goten actually so the truten themes are pretty significant but that aside future goten is a very good boy with a much different personality and outlook on things… much like how future trunks is compared to his main timeline counterpart :3c the whole thing was developed by me and my gf together and we never rly posted too much about it and the broken links you did end up finding were probably from like the one or two times we did but here u go im glad u asked

the big change is it starts out with chi chi getting pregnant before goku dies of heart disease or whatever in the android saga instead of the cell saga, so even after he dies in that timeline she still has their 2nd son and he grows up in the future timeline with trunks.

when they were kids (like 10-15) goten was stronger than trunks just bc gohan and chi chi were there to teach him just a little bit. trunks and goten sparred a lot though so he was able to keep up but never really passed him. (that part isnt really important but i figured it was a nice detail that made sense)

thats when history of trunks comes into play, and they both get really serious about gohan training them. the scene in the movie where gohan knocks trunks out before flying off and getting killed is the same except now he just knocks out 2 kids instead of 1 i guess. 

i feel i gotta add that this au was created when the future trunks arc in dbs was airing, and mai was introduced as his love interest, and honestly in my opinion the scenes were written really well but i just wasnt digging the fact that before she was granted a younger appearance she was already middle aged, like she was old enough to be his mom if that makes sense. so it really isnt a dig on mai at all cause i love her and id die for her its just the romantic plot that i didnt like. so when that was airing i thought “WELL what if that was someone else” 

she’s still with them though in this timeline and she still has her younger appearance! 

the future timeline is still progressing the same as it did in canon, the androids still wrecked the place and no one was strong enough to do much about it so trunks is still set up with a time machine to meet with the other timeline. goten stays back and does his best to protect everyone while hes gone just in case

some stuff happens in between here but skip ahead to trunks coming back from the trip after the cell games i guess! lots of stuff happened obviously like trunks literally dying, spending years in the time chamber with his dad, meeting a whole gaggle of clowns that he’d only heard stories about, seeing gohan as a preteen. hes got a lot of stuff to share!!! now hes back and he can take care of the androids + cell + and goten can catch up and lifes pretty good over there! 😇

during the rebuilding period goten would spend a lot of time with chi-chi and ox-king and still slept over there occasionally which she really appreciated, and he invited trunks and bulma over there with him frequently.

despite this he wasnt present when she died as no one really expected goku black to wipe out the landscape so far from the city, but she and ox-king died along with more than half of the population. (ugh god im so sorry queen i love you😓)

as i said before mai is still here and she’s still the leader of the resistance!

events of future bulmas death is the same as well as mai originally intending to go with trunks when they meet up together in an abandoned building. goten is already there as the three of them rest up a bit and start making their way to capsule corp. goten was planning on staying behind anyways but he wanted to see the two of them off. when goku black interrupts them as they arrive, trunks and goten encourage mai to escape, seeing as she only has a gun and everyone already knows bullets arent gonna work. 

this scene is the same as it was in canon, where trunks tries to rush black but gets beaten quickly. mai trying to buy him time to let him escape is replaced with goten actually fighting him and taking a hit for trunks but getting knocked out as mai did. trunks under extreme stress from already losing his mom today assumes hes dead instantly, (he has dumb bitch disease, he didnt even check for a pulse in canon!🤔) and fires a masenko to escape into capsule on his own 

after trunks pops back in time and black is focused on searching for him, mai sneaks back in to retrieve goten (even though they told her to leave she really just ducked behind some rubble and stayed close, because she wasnt just gonna leave them!)

she takes him back to an underground bunker with other members of earths resistance and when he wakes up she tells him that trunks made it to the time machine and that hes presumably in the other timeline now. 

idk if yall remember it well but i rewatched some of the episodes just for this, and trunks in the main timeline believing goten was killed and mai is alone and he wont be able to get back is so sad. and when he spent that day with gohan and his family and cried thinking about how if black hadn’t have shown up, he couldve had a family too… he doesnt deserve to be this sad 😥

skip to when he’s finally able to get back home with goku and vegeta with him and they make their way to the bunker where he sees mai and goten together! the scene in canon where he rushes over and starts spilling his heart out is the same, with him telling goten he thought he died

they get a really sweet hug moment here when theyre both happy to see the other is still safe and it gives both goku and vegeta some Food For Thought, because goku actually didnt know there was a goten in this timeline, and he doesnt really recognize him at first. vegeta has the idea in his head that this is probably goten.

goten never really had any sort of real attachment to his dad. it makes sense hes never met him, hes only ever really heard about him through others, (his mom, his brother, trunks, and probably bulma has mentioned him as well) so he definitely knows OF him its just that, he doesnt know him. so when he sees the real goku standing there for once a lot of thoughts run though his mind, like, “that looks A LOT like goku black!” “thats definitely my old hairstyle” and “holy shit is that my dad?” but the first thing he actually says out loud is “Holy shit its goku orange” and vegeta really almost loses it because cause any doubt in his mind about this kid being related to kakarot just went right out the window cause only someone related to him would say that

and as you probably know a lot happens after that with them all finding a way to defeat zamasu but i dont want to include all of the rest when you can probably just interpret which scenes were changed  

ANYWAYS now instead of trunks surviving the apocalypse its trunks and goten surviving the apocalypse. thats why its not a really super romantic deal like Who has time for dates when goku black Might possibly be hiding in this abandoned olive garden?? so theyre just very close and privately affectionate

the ending where trunks and mai get to live in a new world with their counterparts is the same except gotens there with them of course, dbs left their ending pretty open 

so that takes care of the story changes, heres some additional details and information on gotens character in this au!

he kept his natural hairstyle for a while, but i think he changed it sometime during the rebuilding period after the androids and just let it grow out a bunch. up until then he kept his natural style purely to honor the guy he’s heard so fondly of even if it brought him a lot of mixed feelings when people said he looks just like him. a really distinct feature about his new hairstyle is that the spikes look like horns and i love that a lot !!

and the shawl he wears was the same one chi chi wore 

some personality traits for future goten is that he has a habit of bottling up his negative emotions and has trouble taking care of himself, as hes always more focused on the well being of his loved ones. he can be mischievous and cocky but hes not overconfident (or he hasnt been since gohans death) however in some situations he can be charismatic and assertive which works really well imowhen their timeline is erased and theyre temporarily in the main timeline, goten gets to meet a bunch of people like gohan and his family, chi chi, and even his counterpart

I made my 3x3 and I’m sorry it’s uneven but I really, really couldn’t be bothered making it even.

Okay so an explanation of everything:

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - An anime that’s stupidly fucking good for several reasons including but not limited to a wonderfully crafted story that tells a pretty dark take based on a genre stereotyped as fluffy and childish. A cast of really, really good characters are created, the art direction is wonderful and the soundtrack is absolutely sublime. I could go in greater depth but nah. A perfect 10, imo.

Yuru Camp – Anime of the season as I have stated multiple times. Yuru Camp is probably the single most relaxing thing I’ve ever seen, with the general tone of the show being complimented by the charming art direction and relaxing soundtrack, plus what’s probably my favourite ED song in anything ever, with its only competition being something later on the list. The relationship developed between Rin and Nadeshiko is super convincing and really heart-warming. Only real problem is that the rest of the cast aren’t really well realised.

Love Live & Love Live Sunshine – Kinda cheating here but you know. Looking through my blog, you can find more than enough instances of me praising Love Live, as well as a lot of criticism of it, too. Love Live definitely isn’t the best anime I’ve seen, as a matter of fact it’s probably like the second or third worst on this list from a critical standpoint, but I fucking adore it. Original SIP has probably made me cry more than any other anime, and the 18 girls created across both series, I completely adore. Wonderfully fun series that I could honestly recommend to anyone.

Made in Abyss – I think Made in Abyss is like, the best thing I’ve ever seen. Everything, and I mean everything, is crafted with such extensive thought and detail. The world is absolutely jaw-droppingly beautiful, the soundtrack by Australia’s very own Kevin Penkin is fucking gorgeous, the art design is incredible, the characters are wonderfully realised, the directing is impeccable, etc. Plus, the anime fucking toys with your emotions. It grabs you by the testicles and rips them off, before making you literally choke to death on them and then digging up your grave and cutting up your corpse. I didn’t watch too many anime last year, but Made in Abyss fucking annihilates most of its competition by such an absurdly huge margin. I can’t even begin to convey just how excellent this anime is. Everything it does, it does perfectly. So long as you’re okay with brutally excessive depictions of violence and gore towards a literal 12 year old, give this a watch. It’s definitely worth your time.

Kiniro Mosaic – So after not really being into anime for a couple of years at that point, and having never been exposed to the CGDCS genre, @meme-emperor forced me to watch this. Kinmosa is one of the most consistently entertaining and funny cute girl anime I’ve ever seen. The art style, though it makes the anime look a little older than it actually is, is incredibly pleasing to look at, and all of the characters are wonderfully entertaining and cute. Plus, I really, really like Ayaya. For being the anime that reintroduced me to anime and introduced me to the slice of life genre, there’s no way it couldn’t make it on this list.

Dragon Ball – This is probably me cheating even more than putting the two Love Lives on the same spot. See, my history with Dragon Ball isn’t the same as most. I grew up as a child aware that it existed, but didn’t know much about it. However, throughout my life from like the ages 10+, I’ve kinda just learned a lot about Dragon Ball and DBZ without ever watching them properly. I saw lots of Z from when my little brother was watching it, but I wasn’t watching it with him. I knew the plot fairly generally from playing some of the games, and since Trunks was my favourite character I picked up DBS around when his arc started. I’d seen the second two Broly movies, Wrath of the Dragon, Battle of Gods and Ressurection “F”, but I’d still never truly seen the anime. In short, I had way more knowledge than I reasonably should have for having never seen Z proper. At a date I can go and find because it’s on this sideblog, I read all of the Dragon Ball manga, and that was my first full exposure to the story of Dragon Ball. And yet, I’ve still never seen Z. Dragon Ball is on this list because it’s been weirdly super present in my life without me ever watching it, and it’s a franchise I really like for many reasons, even if I went into none of them here that would justify it belonging on this list.

K-On – This is the best cute girl anime I’ve ever seen. Everything I can praise any other cute girl anime for, I can praise K-On for doing better. K-On creates a cast of actually interesting, actually likeable, and most importantly, actually believable cute girls that develop actually convincing relationships with one another. And yes, that’s a lot of “actually” in one sentence, but that’s because the CGDCS genre is so full of surface level trash (Slow Start) that I truly appreciate something good like K-On. With the exception of maybe Tsumugi who needed a little more development, all of the characters are fully realised and have proper, meaningful and obvious character development. K-On is as relaxing as an anime can be, with incredibly warm colours and pleasant animation and art style. K-On is also home to that ED I alluded to that may be my favourite – “Don’t Say Lazy”. K-On is so full of substance that I can’t even begin to describe how incredibly good it is, but in short, K-On is believable. Digibro has like a 2 part series where he goes into much greater depth than I have about why he loves K-On so much, and we’ve got pretty much identical opinions there. Just go watch that if you truly want to know why I love it so much, and why you should watch it if you haven’t already.

Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon – Maid Dragon is the hardest anime to recommend on this list because of Tohru’s breasts and Lucoa’s everything, but once you’re past those, this anime is fucking god tier. Maid Dragon is an absolutely wonderful tale about family, and more specifically family not related by blood. It teaches a lot of beautiful lessons about relationships and parenthood, and I could probably write a full essay on why Kobayashi herself is such a wonderfully crafted and incredibly interesting character and why the relationships she develops across the anime are so fucking excellent. Also, I think Maid Dragon is straight up the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. Every single episode, nay, every scene is packed with so much good, well-crafted comedy and you’re absolutely guaranteed to laugh when you watch it. The way it so flawlessly intertwines comedy and its more serious moments is also so incredibly impressive. Plus, all of your typical technical shit’s really good. The art style is cute, the animation is stupid fucking good, especially the action scenes, and all of the voice acting is really great too. Of course it’s hard to recommend, “D for dragon” isn’t a phrase you’d want your mum to hear, but, again, as soon as you get past that, it’s one of the best anime out there, and legitimately competes with Made in Abyss for best anime of 2017.

Sword Art Online – Okay, so, I’ve got a lot of explaining to do. SAO is fucking trash, and is probably the worst anime I’ve ever seen – definitely the worst I’ve ever seen to completion. Sword Art Online has so few redeeming qualities and so, so, so many problems present in virtually every single frame of its run time. I could put so many other anime on this spot, I could put your Death Notes, your Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhoods, your No Game No Lifes, like every cute girl show I’ve ever seen, I could put so many shows that are objectively better in every conceivable way in this slot, so why in the fuck is SAO here? See, my understanding of a 3x3 is that it’s not made up of your favourite anime, it’s made up of anime that mean something to you. And SAO means something to me. SAO is complete fucking garbage, but I love it. And I love that I used to love it unconditionally. The fact that 13 year old me thought that SAO was literally the best thing ever is embarrassing, and yet I don’t feel guilty. SAO is nostalgic for me, it’s the most nostalgic thing I know. It reminds me of the time I was a complete fucking tool. And I don’t regret that time. SAO has too many problems to count, it’s irredeemable garbage, but I can’t stop loving it. Yes, there are so many better shows I could put here, but none of them mean as much to me as SAO does.

Game Recommendations

It's my birthday today and I thought I'd make something of the day and share some games I think some of you might like to give a shot.

Most of these are games I've played on the blog.

Without wasting more time on 'my special day' here's some games I love or like a heck of a lot and think more people should check out.

Final Fantasy Tactics

Yeah, I'm sorry.

I know plenty of you have heard me gush enough, from my character analysis, to one of my first playthroughs on this blog that was done in a terrible quality, to my more recent dive into FFTA in which I constantly complained and referenced FFT.

But I couldn't honestly make a recommendation list without it.

FFT is the best, bar none, tactical/strategy RPG I've ever played.

The job system lets you do so much that it has lead me to be disappointed with so many other games that claim they offer the same plethora of options because frankly, they rarely do.

Seeing as I've gushed plenty on this title already, I'll just say my piece.

If you like RPGs, or job systems, or the Fire Emblem series, or Final Fantasy, or just think it sounds fun to experiment with different party makeups while playing through the best FF story (full stop), this game is worth picking up in any way you can.

I've always been partial to the original version on PS which you can pick up in a couple forms digitally, but I have to say my taste between the original and remake flips back and forth all the time because holy cow that remake is good.

The original has a translation job that I enjoy more and a few key moments in the story are presented much more intensely in the original due to that translation, the remake adds two new job classes, a new more uniform translation, a few new unique characters, and AWESOME AS CAN BE CUTSCENES.

The remake originally came out on the PSP and can be picked up on iOS as well.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

I've been posting a lot of little things about this game lately and I figure it's about time I explain why. I also feel like I should because I’ve honestly annoyed the heck out of my cousin trying to drag him into the title for weeks now.

I heard about the Xenoverse games through ProJared's videos and figured I'd pick up the newest since I'm a ridiculously huge DB fan and I haven't really enjoyed the games too much since almost all of them are fighting games.

(A genre I wish I had the patience for but every time I try I just find myself bored knowing how much research I need on each character or annoyed at how precise some of the controls can be when I haven't even decided the game was worth the dedication needed to learn those controls, but I digress)

The only DB game I've enjoyed before this was one of the Legacy of Goku titles for GBA, though I always thought the Budokai games looked really cool I just never owned them.

BUT THIS GAME.

Holy cow this game.

I got it for Christmas nearly eight months ago and told myself I'd play it once I had some free time. Eight months later I finally throw it in the console for more than 30 minutes (I had made a few characters when I got the game but didn't do a single thing) and I honestly struggled to stop playing.

It's the kind of game I wish DB went for more often. It's fighting, yeah, but it's freeform with simple controls and combos that feel more like Dynasty Warriors in simplicity while giving you SO MANY OPTIONS.

Sure you have basic combos, but you can interrupt them at any point and those combos chain into each other for unique elongated combos AND THAT'S BEFORE CONSIDERING ALL YOUR SUPERS AND ULTRAS.

Every possible move from the dragon ball series seems to be included and you can pepper them in however you please.

A video or two would do better than this truncated description, but this is the game that fulfilled years of wanting to play a good dragon ball game for me.

I can hop online and knock around all my favorite villains and heroes with my custom character utilizing all the coolest moves whenever I want, and it's awesome.

If you like DB or think creating a character with tons of potential move combinations in this style of gameplay sounds fun, GO FOR IT. (I’m playing on PS4 if you want to play together :D, it’s my birthday so I’m going to use smilies so take that attempts at uniform post quality!)

Suikoden

Thankfully, after having to stop myself from gushing for a few pages about DB Xenoverse 2, I don't have to say much about this title as I did a full playthrough on this blog already.

This is a quality RPG with fast paced combat, fun quirks to said combat to keep it interesting, oh, and ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT recruitable characters.

I love this game, and I recommend this one over it's sequel (which was unbelievably good and the starting point I had for the series) purely because what this title lacks compared to the second, it makes up for with MUCH better intermission sequences.

If you have an RPG itch and like games with unique characters in your party then there is no question as to whether you should or shouldn't play this.

Pick it up in any way you possibly can.

Faxanadu

I was short in my post about this game but, honestly, I don't have much to say about it other than it's really fun and interesting.

A great NES rpg-ish game that you can (especially if you're garbage like me and use save states for boss fights in the late game, yes I did that, yes I should be ashamed) beat in a single day on the weekend.

Oh, and it’s wonderfully somber with great monster design and all of this comes on the NES.

Star Wars Republic Commando

Since I went and recommended four games that have already been on this blog before, here's one that hasn't been beaten to death here.

Republic Commando goes down as my favorite star wars game, even higher on the list than KOTOR.

It's the only SW game that focuses entirely on those in the universe that aren't god-level force wielding Jedi/Sith or top level smugglers/bounty hunters.

You're the leader of a commando squad for the Republic. A "key" role in some respects, but overall you're just another pair of boots on the ground.

The missions are all believable military practices you'd expect the Republic to be undertaking, primarily sabotaging the droid menace whenever possible.

This game excels everywhere I didn't expect it to. Extremely enjoyable characters (who are CLONES written to fall into ARCHTYPE CLICHES and yet they are LIKABLE AS HECK), interesting squad controls that are simple yet expertly crafted, Foley that got me interested in Foley in the first place, a story that’s interests because it’s the backroom of what matters in the movies or other games (ground war).

I don't know what to say aside from pointing out that this is a fantastic shooter with an amazing take on the star wars universe, primarily because it focuses on the gritty war going on rather than the glitz and glamour of the high tier force powered individuals.

Oh, and the squad controls are really fun.

There are plenty of games I wish would come back from their graves, and Republic Commando goes right on that shelf next to Chromehounds as franchises left to rot for not fitting the stereotypes well enough.

Chrome is a slow mech game and RC is a star wars game without lightsabers.

You're apparently just not allowed to do those things.
