The Test
Overhaul x F!Reader
Warnings: Angst, death, mega angst, pregnancy, premature birth, this hurt to write but thats okay
Gotta get the sad vibes out of thy body. Lets all be sad together
~~~
‘Okay, It’ll be okay. Just tell him! He’s your husband for christ sakes!’ You thought as you paced back and forth inside your room. You were afraid. You loved your husband you really did but sometimes he even made you afraid.
Kai barely showed his emotions and when he did it was a miracle. Hell you barely just started getting intimate. You’ve only had intercourse 2 times you’ve guys been together. You’ve guys been together for 4 years. You understood his dislike of germs, and you never wanted to make him uncomfortable. So you just kept your wishes for intimacy to yourself.
His kisses or hugs were almost just as rare as sex. You would tell him you loved him and he’d grunt back at you. You knew it was his language of saying i love you back but sometimes you just wished he’d say it back. You were only human after all. You wished for attention and some sort of love contact.
The last time you guys had sex he wore a condom. You didn’t mind really, it’s not like you were trying for a baby. But out of all the times that the condoms could have failed you,
This was the day of absolute fuckery.
You glared at the positive pregnancy test, hoping it would just disappear. But unfortunately problems like this don’t just disappear. So which leads to where you are now, a woman who is absolutely fucked if she can’t figure out a way to tell her husband she’s pregnant.
“Come on (y/n), you’ve got this. It can’t be that bad right?” You say trying to convince yourself. Kai was very difficult when he wanted to be. So what if he thinks you cheated on him?! You’d be killed on the spot! You wouldn’t be able to even explain, he probably won’t even let you. He had a habit of taking over you.
You sat on the bed as you rubbed your eyes. Trying to hide the tears that threatened to spill. You cried into your hands. This shouldn’t be so hard. He’s your husband. Then why were you so afraid? Was there a possibility that you could tell him without speaking? But how would you-
-the internet
You jumped from your spot on the bed and grabbed your personal computer and began looking at mom websites. Cool pregnancy ideas to tell your husband. You clicked on the link and saw the best ideas there. Get a mug and put the words you're pregnant at the inside of the bottom of the cup. Nah. Gift him baby clothes and let him put the puzzle pieces together. No thats stupid. Get a teddy bear and sew him holding a present, put the test in there and give it to him. Ah fuck it why not?
So from that search alone you RAN out the door and near the closest place where they had teddy bears and presents. You ran as fast as your legs could endure. Whipping your head from aisle to aisle. Looking for the fuzzy stuffy.
You go to the baby aisle and see the best teddy for the job. You quickly grab it as you go to the next aisle for the present. You had picked out a small box that would just fit the test. You smile as you jump up and down in joy. You didn’t know when you became so giddy. Not even an hour ago you were stressed to the point of wanting to hit your head against the door. You take a deep breath in before turning on your heels to pay.
~~~
1 Day Later
You looked at the teddy bear in your hands while sweating. What happened to confident (y/n) yesterday? Oh yeah she left when she had a fight with her husband, a bad one at that too. It was really bad. But you couldn’t stop now. You had to tell him. Better sooner than later. You take a deep breath as you hugged the teddy closer as you let out a sigh. Looking at Kai’s office door you let your hand let out a fragile knock.
“Come in.” You slowly push the door open, looking in, you see Kai with two of his henchmen. Chronostasis and Nemoto. You didn’t talk to them much but you guys had pretty civil conversations.
“Kai I need to talk to you, without them here please?” You say as you try to stand your ground. You don’t really want your husband's friends to know what’s going on in your guys personal affairs.
“Fine. Chrono, Nemoto, leave.”
“Yes boss.” They leave the room just leaving you and your stonic husband.
“What do you even want?” He says in a voice that makes you question doing this but you go up to him and hand him the teddy bear. Your face beet red as you try to figure out his emotion. Especially when he opened the present.
“Is this a positive pregnancy test?” He says in an emotionless manner, but you couldn’t help but hear the bit of anger in his voice as well.
“Yes, I don’t know what you want to do or-”
“You cheated on me?” Wait what the fuck?
“What! How could you say that!” You say in offense.
“I wear protection, woman! There's no way I could have gotten you pregnant!”
“Condoms aren’t even 100% effective! It could have busted or had a whole in it!” You yell back. You were offended. You were his wife, how dare he accuse you of such an act! Considering he was so interested in medical things you would think that he would know that condoms aren’t 1005 effective!
“You slut! I give you everything and you go out and cheat on me!”
“I didn’t fucking cheat asshole! God after years of being with you, your immediate reaction was I’m cheating?! Why am I with you if you don’t even trust me!”
“Leave this house! We’re over!”
“Are you fucking serious?! You won’t even consider it!” You scream at him.
“Leave or else!” His ember eyes looking at you with the intent to kill. You knew that if you wanted to live you had to leave. Tears rush down your eyes as you turn around quickly before swinging open the door. You turn around to him one last time before screaming at the top of your lungs
“I can’t believe I married a cold hearted monster like you! I hope you die alone!” And with those words, you left. Never stepping foot inside that base as long as you lived.
~~~
5 Months Later
“This sucks actually ass.” You growl as you walk around your apartment. It wasn’t the best but it would do for the time being. You got it cause your friend was friends with the owner. All you had to do was take care of the garden they had outside. They wanted to make it eye catching so more people would move in.
Understandable.
You held your stomach as the urge to pee came over you. Due to the fact a literal baby is growing inside you, it's pushing against your bladder. Kinda rude. You're carrying this baby and it's just gonna do you like this? That’s some bullshit man.
You groan as you continue to sweep your hardwood floor in your small living area. It was much better than living with Kai I guess. You never wanted to see his stupid gorgeous face again.
You look up at the area around you, admiring your work on cleaning the entire apartment. You smirk to yourself before feeling a kick in your stomach. You hold your stomach as you take a breather. Looking back up you notice a familiar golden shine coming from a little dish you kept by the door where you put coins in.
Walking towards it you notice that its your old wedding ring from you old marriage. You guys never really got divorced so it was still official by law. Annoying yes but you didn’t want to even be in a room with that bastard.
Grabbing the ring you look at it and think how much it would be worth. A final fuck you to the mind that shattered you heart.
Grabbing it and putting on a coat you start walking out the door and head out the door. Going to a pawn shop around the corner. You would be able to get a little extra cash for the baby.
~~~
“Yes sir I would like to sell this ring.” You place the ring on the counter and slide it over to the employee. His eyes widen as he motions you to come closer.
“This is a yakuza style ring. A Shie Hasssakai kind of ring. Where did you get this?” The man said. He sounded like he was worried.
“Oh my shit husband gave me this when he proposed to me. Then kicked me out saying I cheated when I told him I was pregnant. Like sorry that a condom is not 100% effective.” You say soundly. The man looks at you with wide eyes. You didn’t really care at the moment because the feeling of lightheadedness was weighing you down.
“Ma’am are you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Before you could say anything you felt a wet feeling coming from in between your legs. Looking down you see that your water broke.
“MA’AM SHOULD WE CALL 119?!” You shook your head up and down before falling down on the ground, the world seems to be growing black around you.
~~~
Ring ring ring
“Hello?”
“Yes Overhaul sir? This is the guys from the pawn store downtown, we have a ring that seemingly belongs to your ex wife.”
“And you're calling me why?”
“Uh...because she was just carried away in an ambulance. She didn’t look very well, boss. My girlfriend had her kid recently and she wasn’t near as sickly looking as she was.” Overhaul couldn’t help but have his chest tighten up a bit. His heart was beating faster and he could feel it.
“Do you want to know the hospital she’s at Overhaul?”
“Not right now.” Before Kai could even think about what he was doing he hung up the phone and moved his wrist back to the papers. You cheated on him, you’ll be fine. He rolled his eyes but that didn’t mean he didn’t feel the sinking feeling in his stomach.
Like if he had just made a mistake he would live to regret.
~~~
Kai ran as fast as he could towards the hospital where you stayed. They had sent him a call asking him to come down so he could see his kid. When he said that it wasn’t his, they told him that the DNA matched up perfectly with his.
Kai felt a painful sting in his chest as he got closer and closer to the hospital. He was thinking on all the ways to apologize to you. And if his pride would allow him to apologize.
His head rang with the words of what the doctor told him,
***
“Is this Kai Chisaki?”
“Yes it is, why?”
“Well we have you as an emergency contact for miss (y/n) (l/n).”
“Take me off.”
“Excuse me sir?”
“I said take me off.”
“Well I can’t take you off when we called you to tell you that your wife is in critical condition.”
“What?!” Kai tried to not show much worry but he couldn’t help it. No matter how much he told himself that he didn’t love you, thoughts of your smile rushed back into his head. Your laugh. Your everything calmed him down. You were his angel.
“Unfortunately her water broke early, leaving her to have an early birth and her body was not able to handle it. Your daughter, who we did a dna test on is in the ICU (intensive care unit). Her being born 2 months early is having complications breathing.” Kai couldn’t say a world before he rushed out of the door and into your hospital,
***
He burst through the hospital doors and walked up to the nurse as he panted from running. A look of desperation in his golden eyes.
“Where is my wife and daughter? Mrs. Chisaki?” He said in a moment of panic. He hated the look that the nurse gave him as she told him where to find your room. Before he could run into your room a doctor stopped him by grabbing his shoulder.
“I’m sorry to inform you sir but, the complications your daughter had to breath were to severe. We couldn’t save her. I’m deeply sorry.” Kai looked at the doctor. Not wanting to believe a word he had just said. He felt his hands tremble as he grabbed the doctors shoulders. Tears streaming down his face,
“What about (y/n)? Is she okay at least?!” Desperation in his voice. He can’t lose you. He already lost his daughter that he refused to believe was his, now to late to say hello or I love you. He had to see you. Just to hear you sweet voice at least one more time-
“I’m sorry Chisaki. She was pronounced dead 5 minutes before you came in.” No, no. He refused to believe it. He ran to your room, praying you were still here. You needed to be here. He needed to say he was sorry. That he loved you.
once he burst through your room door his worse fears were confirmed, and what the doctor was true. You no longer a heartbeat monitor. Your chest never moved to show some sort of breathing pattern. Kai ran to you holding your face in his hands. He put your forehead to his as his tears landed on your lashes.
“Please...wake up. I’m begging you. I already lost our daughter, I can’t afford to lose you to. Please my angel. Come back.....” Kai grabbed your limp body and pulled you close to his chest, shaking as he started sobbing uncontrollably. His whole world seemed to stop as he felt his only sort of light in his life be blown out. He cried into your neck as he collapsed onto his knees.
“Please, I don’t wanna be alone.”

So due to popular demand I watched episode 2 of Walker for you guys. Part 2 of 2
The pilot was more interesting and it wasn’t interesting. But let’s continue, maybe it’s gonna get better.
So my cookies are ready now! I ate the smallest one to check if they’re good. They are. At least I have my cookies.
Apparently now they have to take a horseriding test. Walker puts the saddle on a horse. But he gets emotional. The flashback music starts. If I see more of these I will develop rabies symptoms. I’m sorry this is what we’re talking about. This is Geneviève Padalecki’s role in this show.
Tumblr media
Walker gets on the horse. He touches the bad and the flashback sound effect plays. Rabies. “Walker are you okay?” Ramirez asks. He nods. I’m Fine Lie #9000.
Tumblr media
No, wait. He gets off the horse. Dude it’s called handling a loss badly and they have therapists for that. Please go to therapy. There are literal professionals trained to help you with that.
He takes off his hat, which lets you know this is serious.
He goes at the bar run by the lady who was with Emily when she died. He is no longer a ranger until he passes the test. We are happy about it because he is not in the psychological conditions to be a law enforcement officer. Oh, wait, we’re supposed not to be happy about it. Honestly, I’m not sure. Is he supposed to be relatable, or are we supposed to think that he’s screwed up and should not be a cop or a parent right now? Because he’s ostensibly the latter but maybe the intentions of the writers are the former.
He says that James thinks he’s “not quite right in the head”. Mmm… are we supposed to think James is being exaggerated? Because it’s true. He’s not in the conditions to do this job… he needs to get professional mental health support, period.
They reminisce about Emily and Walker repeats the same things that made him think there’s more to the case than it appears, like the way her eyes were closed. The bartender confesses she closed her eyes. Well. That was anticlimactic.
In the meanwhile, Liam the gay brother meets his partner for lunch. He’s attractive. Liam would also be if he weren’t dressed and hair-styled like that. I dunno. The partner wants them to move to New York. They joke about dying of queso.
Augustus goes to take pictures with his mother’s camera and has a glowy flashback of his own. “He’s sensitive. He keeps a lot inside, like his father” his grandma comments to her husband. They talk about Walker fixing the house. “He wants to pick up where he left off” she says. I am hurting inside. Did they write this with the Supernatural pilot script open on the desk!?
Ramirez keeps working the case. Turns out, the horse that died wasn’t the horse it was supposed to be (a famous racing horse). Someone swapped the horses? I don’t care, actually. I’m gonna skip the case details.
Walker eats tortilla chips with queso. And begs Ramirez to let him work on the case because that’s all he knows how to do. That’s stolen from a couple Supernatural episodes when they talk about hunting, but okay.
“You know how you can see a horse’s soul in its eyes?” …no, but okay.
They’ll need to find the mysteriously disappeared horse… which is loose! In the hospital! No, not in the hospital. Just on a road. Best shot in the show, big dark horse walking around Austin.
They need to go find the horse. Obviously Walker volunteers to get the horse. “Might not be a ranger, but I’m still a cowboy”. I’m crying this is so cliché.
You know Walker is cool because he gets out of the truck without using the little step.
Tumblr media
It’s so deep.
Oh my god. He. He follows horse dung. It’s. It’s literally a plot point. He tracks the horse following horse poop.
He finds the horse, feeds him a lil sugar cube, puts the reins on him. It’s a beautiful horse. Can’t the show be about this horse?
Billionaire bad guy (owner of the horse, set the fire to pretend the horse was dead because lots of bets were placed on the horse, but the horse was lightly injured so couldn’t win) driving towards his plane to catch his plane to escape. James and Ramirez do a car chase.
Bad guy lackey shoots at their wheels so their car stops. But Walker arrives on the horse, gets Ramirez on the horse and they ride the horse to the bad guys’ car. Ramirez gets on the car and punches the bad guys unconscious.
For some reason (I mean, budget limitations) the fighting sequences are very quick. I would have watched more of Ramirez kicking billionaire bad guy’s ass on a moving car. But it’s fine, I mean, if this show had a bigger budget they’d spend it on more cowboy hats, so it’s fine.
Walker, James and Ramirez celebrate at the bar. Apparently the bad guy’s lackey that was supposed to get rid of the horse loved the horse too much and set him free in Austin. Mood.
There’s still a third of the episode still to go, though. Drama will ensue. Indeed Liam arrives and is super pissed off at Walker for missing lunch, which he forgot because he was busy with his lil tests.
Liam says Stella didn’t show up to the game. Walker says he know where she is and gets Ramirez to come with him.
Indeed she’s thrown a party at their house. Walker asks her what she’s doing. “Being a disappointment I guess” she answers. He asks her why she missed the game. She says that it shouldn’t be so easy to get a second chance after messing up - like him. He’s like, a second chance? It’s not like a stopped being your father. Except… you did? You disappeared from their lives entirely. He calls her out for damaging the house and she’s like, it’s not even our home anymore but I’m supposed to treat it like a museum? Honestly her scenes are the only interesting thing in this show. He says he’s back now, but she says that being back isn’t enough, what makes a parent is *doing parent things*, supporting the kids.
“I wish uncle Liam had gotten custody of us when he tried” she eventually drops the big bomb. Ouch.
He’s super pissed off, takes off the hat dramatically, and drives back to Liam. He gets off the drunk and immediately assaults Liam. “You tried to take my damn kids!”
I’m flabbergasted. They. They just wrote a plotline where a gay man tried to ~steal a straight man’s children~ like it was a good idea. I mean! Liam getting custody of the kids would have been a VERY GOOD IDEA but what, we’re supposed to think he was wrong? I am so confused because I can’t tell if we’re supposed to be on Walker’s side or not. He is NOT in the condition of being a parent. The kids SHOULD be under the custody of their grandparents and/or uncle. Not because he’s traumatized by loss, but because he’s not trying at all. He keeps saying he’s trying but he’s not. He gets aggressive too easily and it could be dangerous.
Anyway the brothers have this physical fight which isn’t by far the most embarrassing thing in this show so I’ll let it slide. “You had no right!” Walker says, to which Liam replies that he gets it was rough but “you went dark! That was negligence!” Which is absolutely right and he should have gotten the custody of the kids. Liam mentions that their parents also agreed on the thing, and Walker yells “these are MY kids!” which is appalling, because being the biological father of some kids doesn’t make it okay to disappear on them for months and being mad if someone else stepped up to be their parent in your absence. “I didn’t want them to be orphans, did you!?” Liam yells back.
“I would never _take_ them, I wanted to protect them,” Liam says, and says more very reasonable things. “Even now you’re not here.” Walker yells that he is here (again, being physically in Austin doesn’t make you a parent, like Stella said), Liam replies that he’s chasing ghosts.
He brings up the things that don’t add up again, like the poker chip. I’m afraid that the narrative will prove him right, that there WAS something there and he was right to follow through the case despite everyone else telling him he was being delusional and that he should let it go and focus on the family. It would be actually good if it turned out that there was nothing there, that it was all coincidence (like the friend closing her eyes) and that he just chased ghosts for real, but I’m afraid this isn’t that kind of show. I think they’re playing it straight, that they’ll make Walker be right, and it will suck.
A note: now that he’s fighting and yelling and being angry, Jared is actually acting properly, which I don’t know if it’s a good thing or creepy.
Actually Liam says something very reasonable now, that answers will not actually satisfy him, her being gone will never make sense emotionally. The poker chip isn’t going to bring her back. He will lose everything if he keeps searching for something that isn’t there.
Now that Walker has calmed down, Jared returns to doing Jared mouth things. Oh no! Augustus watched them fight.
Oooh. Augustus gives him the present Emily was going to give him for father’s day. Poker chips. “She kept a few of the chips so she could show people” (what? But okay). Another of the mysteries was actually not a weird conspiracy at all. I suspect the narrative will make us believe there was nothing there to just pull a twist afterwards. It would be interesting if Walker were indeed looking for nothing, but I doubt that’s what they’re doing. They’re playing the tropes too straight.
Meanwhile Ramirez comes home to her boyfriend preparing a homemade dinner. She says she’s happy he’s there, and that scares the crap out of her. She wants to get both the job and the relationship right. They’re really cute and I hope their relationship doesn’t get drama-fied for drama. A healthy relationship where two partners figure out how to navigate it together, with normal minor bumps along the way they face together, would really be a good thing for the show to portray.
The next morning, Walker is making breakfast when Stella enters the kitchen. She doesn’t speak to him but gets on her phone so he starts texting her. They have a moment. He was looking for him mug and she gets it out for him. She says it reminded her of him being gone so she’d put it away. They do a bonding activity (bringing a memento from their old house to their new one), she cries, he hugs her.
Back at the ranch, Walker’s father has made him a new saddle. Gramps Walker is rough around the edges but has a hidden wisdom.
The emotional moment is kinda broken for me by the big Texas flag they have inside the house. I suppose it’s just how Texas is but it’s still funny for that very reason.
Augustus for his school project has put together a video from old family footage. Lots of flashback, but this time with a regular song and not the rabies sound effect and with the soft lighting but not the most extreme glowy effect, so it’s kinda okay.
Jared makes emotional faces and the episode’s over.
Well, at least the dead guy having been to prison wasn’t really relevant and the bad guy was a billionaire. An improvement from the previous episode.
I’m not going to give views to the youtube trailers, but I’ve been told in the next episode a new character will be introduced that is a childhood friend that is ~the Han Solo to Walker’s Luke Skywalker. *single tear of sorrow* They’re trying SO HARD to be Supernatural and they’re managing to pick the least interesting concepts of Supernatural to do so. Can’t wait to see Fake Dean. Also we haven’t seen Walker lasso a person either. I suppose I’ll have to watch more of this.
Honestly, it’s mostly boring with Stella being the only interesting part and Ramirez and her boyfriend being cute to watch. Walker is so unlikeable. You want him to get his shit together for the sake of the people around him, but not really for his sake. He should go to therapy but he is a manly cowboy man so obviously he won’t go (but I will be impressed if they actually have him see a therapist. It would be interesting to have a manly cowboy man see a therapist. But will they do it?) The idyllic flashbacks of Emily are so overdone and it’s only the second episode! Everything is cheesy.
This traditional Texan ranch aesthetic meets Austin city would be interesting if played in a way that genuinely questions the values of old, but the show doesn’t really, it uses the gay brother and the immigrant friend and the Latina cop and the Black boyfriend as props but the narrative itself doesn’t really do anything with the traditional Texan family thing. Unless they really pull the rug from under the audience’s feet and make some big twists regarding the way the narrative is presenting itself, there’s nothing really interesting or useful in the show. I’m afraid they will solve their problems by Wanting To Do Better and Sticking Together As A Family, which is just a conservative fantasy of how to fix problems.
By the way, the cookies were really good and my family loved them too.

what did the chickadee and phoenix say to the hybrid?
this was supposed to be a short snippet,,,,,,, anyway, Lydia meets the Maitlands but make it the ~wing au~
----------------------------------------
  “Greeting ghosts,” Said the strange little fledging that entered the attic. “I am Lydia Deetz. Do not be afraid.”
  “Why aren’t you afraid of us?” Barbara asked.
  “Because you aren’t scary,” Lydia said. “I mean, look at me in comparison.” She spread her sagging wings (did she ever lift them?), and Barbara realized there were four of them. “I’m probably the freakiest thing to ever walk among the avians. You got competition.”
Realization dawned on Barbara, but Adam got to it first.
  “You’re a hybrid!” Her husband yelled, nearly flinging his sheet right off of him when he pointed to Lydia.
  “Adam!” Barbara scolded.
  “No, it’s okay,” Lydia said. “I prefer the term ‘hybrid’ over ‘mutant’ and ‘monster.’”
  “I was gonna say it’s rude to point,” Barbara said, pushing Adam’s hand down.
  “Ah,” Lydia nodded. “But yes. I am a hybrid. In the blood. Unfortunately.”
She spread her wings in a mock bow to them, and Barbara could see veins of white riddling the insides of the upper pair. She then winced, fangs flashing in the dim attic light when she grimaced in obvious pain, and let her wings go limp. They landed in a heap on the ground, strewn out like scraps of ruined cloth.
  “Are you alright?” Barbara asked worriedly, feeling a flash of maternal instincts zip through her like lightning.
  “Fine,” Lydia answered before the question could completely leave Barbara’s mouth, as if it were normal for her to brush off her discomfort when around other people. She shuffled her feet and tilted her head at Barbara and Adam. “Why are you in sheets?”
  “We were trying to scare you,” Adam told her.
  “You’re not doing a very good job,” Lydia said. “What do you look like under there? Are you horribly disfigured?” Her shoulders lifted, but her big bat ears remained completely drooped. “Are you like me? May I see?”
Barbara and Adam took off their sheets. Lydia’s expression dimmed.
  “Oh,” Lydia seemed disappointed. “You’re pureblooded.” She sniffed. “No offense.”
  “None taken,” Adam said. “I’m Adam, this is Barbara.”
  “Oh, woah,” Lydia’s eyes dilated hugely, like a cat that just saw its owner’s foot move under the blankets. “You’re so shiny.”
Barbara blinked, then realized Lydia was talking about her. Even in death, her feathers continued to glow like fire. She extended one of her wings to Lydia.
  “You can touch them, if you’d like.”
Lydia looked up at her in shock. “Really? You’re not afraid of me, like, contaminating you?”
  “No...”
  “Or infecting you with my ‘dirty blood’?”
  “No.”
  “Or ripping your wings out of your back like I’m a feral WingEater because I’m jealous of how pretty and normal you are and want to ruin all purebreds in an envious rage?”
  “No! Do people really say that stuff to you?!”
Lydia actually laughed. “Wow, you really haven’t met a hybrid before.” She shuffled her feet. “But-- I can really touch them?”
Barbara smiled warmly at her. “Of course, sweetheart.” She nudged her wing closer. “Go on. I promise I don’t have Drop Feather Fever.”
  “Even if you did, I don’t have feathers!” Lydia said, then reached out and brushed Barbara’s wing. Her touch was light and gentle, as if she were worried she may hurt her new friend, and her short, stubby claws tickled against the skin beneath the feathers. “Wow... They’re so soft! And warm!”
  “Yup!” Adam strode over, looking proud. “You, little bat-moth, are looking at a real Phoenix Avem! WAIT--”
Lydia leapt backwards and the mane of yellow-orange flannel moth fur around her neck and chest bristled like a startled cat.
  “YOU CAN SEE US?!” Adam yelled.
It was only then that Barbara realized that Lydia shouldn’t have been able to see her or Adam. She had been so distracted by the adorable fledgling that it hadn’t dawned on her at all.
  “Uhh,” Lydia’s fur settled. “Yeah?”
  “But we were told that the living ignore the strange and usual,” Adam said.
  “Well, perhaps it’s because I, myself, am strange and unusual,” Lydia said. “Also all of my internal organs are purple and I can’t have a period due to a ‘compromised reproductive system caused by faulty genetics,’ so I’m not exactly very far from the boat you’re rocking in.”
  “Trust me, sweetie, the no period thing is a blessing,” Barbara said.
  “Everything else is a curse, though,” Lydia said with a sad smile.
Barbara frowned at that, but before she could press on what she meant, Adam stepped in.
  “Okay, well, since you can see us, do you mind leaving and never coming back?”
  “Adam!” Barbara flared. She thought of not seeing this little girl again, and it made a cold pit open up inside of her and she couldn’t really explain why.
  “Not her,” Adam said quickly. “Her family!”
Lydia scoffed. “We’re not a family.” She sounded a touch offended. “We’re father, daughter, and Delia.”
Furrowing her eyebrows, Barbara inquired, “Your mother, she...?”
Just when Barbara thought Lydia’s ears couldn’t droop any further, they somehow got even lower.
  “She... She’s dead...”
Adam grimaced. Barbara’s wings tensed against her back for bringing such a traumatic experience up.
The good news, though, was that the role of mother was up for the taking. And since Lydia clearly felt anything but a parental bond with that Delia woman, Barbara knew it was at good as hers.
She could feel the mammary feathers and nesting season hormones coming in already! Literally. She imprinted on Lydia when she touched her wing. That was her chick now.
  “Oh, honey,” Barbara murmured. “I’m so sorry.”
Lydia shook her head, making her ears slap around her face. She gazed around the attic with sparkling eyes, as if she were holding back tears.
  “She would have loved this place,” Lydia said. “She was Vesper! Which, you know, explains,” She gestured to herself. “She would call me her ‘weird little moon,’ but it was never in a mean way. And we used to have our own little full moon festivals so I would grow up with proper Vesper traditions and culture! We would hang up all the blankets in the house on the trees and make these forts that we would burrow in and watch the moon from. She taught me how to properly pray to Valtiel and everything! And we would do the moon dances on the ground because I can’t fly, but she made the effort to learn how to for me. We couldn’t actually go to the festivals, though, because,” She gestured again. “She worried about me all the time and didn’t let me do a lot of things, but what we did do was amazing.” She then blinked out of her daze and shook her head. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to bore you talking about my mom.”
  “No, it’s okay!” Barbara assured her. “We don’t mind!”
  “Really?” Lydia tilted her head and her ears flopped over with the movement. “‘Cause my dad never wants me to talk about her. It’s basically against the law in the house. Among many things.” She raised her wings slightly and did a voice that was apparently supposed to be her cicada Cimex father, “‘Lydia, no talking about your mom! Lydia, no eating bugs, it’s weird and basically cannibalism! Lydia, no coming around me because even though I say I’m trying to change my views of you I still see you as an unrepentant monster who I fear will eat my throat out while I’m sleeping and it makes me guilty not because the way I think of you but because I fear of what you’ll do to society and I was the one who brought you into the world to wreak suck destruction on civilization!’”
Barbara and Adam stared at her in shock.
  “Dads, am I right?”
  “That’s…very concerning,” Adam said.
Lydia shrugged nonchalantly. “Everything about my existence is concerning, so…” Her face then scrunched up and she pressed her floppy ears against the sides of her head like she was trying to keep out a noise that Barbara and Adam’s Avem ears couldn’t pick up. “Oh, ow. Stop worrying so loudly! I’m okay! I’m, like, basically immune to it at this point!”
Barbara and Adam both blinked in confusion, but then Barbara understood.
  “You’re a mind reader.”
Lydia pulled her hands away and smiled slightly. “In the flesh.”
Barbara wondered what that was like--
  “It’s pretty cool, actually.”
--to hear everyone’s thoughts, all the different ways they thought about you and judged you, possibly pretending they liked you when really they hated your guts.
  “When you put it like that…”
  “You surprise me more and more, Lydia,” Adam said.
  “Better than scaring you,” Lydia said. “You guys are really cool. I like you. You’re probably the best thing about this stupid house.”
  “This house is not stupid!” Adam blustered. He grabbed Lydia by the shoulders, making them lurch and the moth fur bristle, and spun her around to him so he could scold her. “It’s a classic Victiorian-- OWW!!!”
Adam ripped away from Lydia as if he had touched fire, while Lydia shrunk away, instinctively wrapping her wings around herself. Adam shook his hands in the air while flapping his wings in obvious distress.
  “Ow! Ow! Ow! What HAPPENED?” Adam yelped.
  “Sorry,” Lydia whispered.
  “Are you okay?” Barbara asked her husband. He splayed his hands open for her, and she winced when she saw angry red blisters starting to form all across his palms. “Oh.”
  “It isn’t lethal!” Lydia said, and she sounded very meek compared to the snarky girl that had been talking a few seconds before. “Well, I don’t think it is… But you’re dead, so it’s okay! The pain will go away within a few hours!”
  “HOURS?!” Adam squawked, as if he were a parrot and not a chickadee. He made a woeful noise. “Just cut my hands off!”
Lydia’s ears drooped even lower. “I’m really sorry, Mr. Maitland. I should have told you.”
  “That your really soft fur is EVIL?” Adam said, and Barbara knew he was playing with Lydia, now. However, the little fledgling didn’t seem to realize because she still looked anxious.
  “It’s-- I take after the moth my Cimex side is from. A southern flannel. The worms have venomous hairs, so…” Lydia fluffed her collar of fur. “I do, too. And they sting pretty badly. But not all the time! Only when I bristle them. Thank the goddesses.” She shuffled her feet. “I’m really sorry.”
  “It’s alright,” Adam assured her. “A little blistering never hurt anyone. Oh, look, boils! Wonderful!” He laughed. “It builds character!”
Lydia cracked a small smile at that. When her nervousness didn’t recede, Barbara opened one wing to her, beckoning her to come closer. After a moment of shock and delight, gauging if it were a trap, Lydia skittered over and burrowed herself into Barbara’s feathers.
She fit perfectly.

Summary : Nine long months later, Delia finally gives birth to her baby.
************************
Delia’s pregnancy passed by as fine as it could have gotten. Sure, there had been crying, screaming, and also fear. The fear had been at its peak when the future mother had suddenly collapsed in Beetlejuice’s arms during her fifth month. But the doctor had told them that it was just exhaustion and that Delia needed to take it easy until her the end of her term. Easier said than done when you live with a teenager, a demon and two ghosts.
But there was also happiness, laughing and being a family. Because Delia’s pregnancy had had an effect no one expected, everyone got closer and they now felt like a real family.
Barbara had helped the life coach a lot. She had refused to tell her that Adam and her had lost a child not too long before their deaths. She didn’t want to stress Delia more than she already was. The dead woman had gotten significantly closer to the redhead. They had read books about pregnancy together and talked about how the house was about to become even more chaotic than was with the arrival of a baby. Adam had helped too in his own way, keeping Delia company while everyone else was out.
Beetlejuice’s behavior had been a surprise for everyone. As the pregnancy progressed the demon spent less and less time near Delia. Almost afraid to stand less than five feet away from her. Mostly locking himself away in Lydia’s room. Lydia on the other hand, had become more and more curious during the pregnancy. She spoke to her stepmom about what was going to happen when the baby would be here. The teenager was excited to become a big sister.
The future father was probably the most stressed out of all of them. Charles had become over-protective of Delia, which he already was, but this had gotten out of hand. He refused to leave the house, working at home. At one point, his wife had purposefully locked him out of the house, forcing him to go to the office. He had not been happy about it but understood that maybe he had overreacted. Of course, the “collapsing episode” did not help at all.
But the pregnancy was coming to an end. Thank god, thought Delia as she sat on the couch. She put her hands on her enlarged stomach. She didn’t think it was possible to become this big without exploding. She played with her necklace; a moonstone had joined her amethyst. It was a reputed stone for a good pregnancy. With all the crystals Delia had scattered around the house she clearly hoped at least one of them will help. A smile appeared on her face as she looked at the board, they had out in the living room.
Apparently, bets became a habit in the house. They had bet on if the baby was a girl or a boy. Delia, Beetlejuice and Barbara bet it was a boy and Charles, Lydia and Adam a girl. Charles and her had ended up deciding not to know before the actual birth. The other bet was on her due date. The doctor had told her it would be on March 22nd. Delia had trusted her doctor and bet on March 22nd as did Adam, Charles on March 19th, Beetlejuice and Lydia on March 20th, and Barbara on March 25th. Charles, Beetlejuice and Lydia’s names were already crossed out. And It seemed like Adam and hers were next. Apparently, her uterus was so comfy that the little human inside didn’t want to get out. The life coach sighed, rubbing her belly gently,
“I know you like it in here, but I’d appreciate if you’d come out soon.” She laughed slightly as she felt the baby kicking, “Your father and I are really impatient to meet you. The others too. Our family is a bit crazy. But I’m sure you’re going to love it. We’re lucky you know, to have a family who loves us. Your father is the most wonderful man I’ve ever met. The first one to actually treat me with respect. He loves you very much already. Even if he’s scared. We all are.”
She paused. The baby kicked again. Apparently, they liked her voice,
“Lydia, your big sister, is amazing too. She’s going to show you everything you need to know. And then there’s Adam and Barbara. They’re going to be the best aunt and uncle ever. They can’t wait to meet you. They’re not really your aunt and uncle but it doesn’t matter, they’re family. And then there’s Beetlejuice. He’s… weird. But I’m sure you’re going to love him too. He just needs some love. And his hair changes color it’s fun! I’m sure you’ll love that.”
The baby kept kicking and Delia hummed. The front door opened and Lydia and Charles stepped inside the house.
‘Hello you two!” she exclaimed happily, “How was school Lydia?”
“Boring as always.’ Said the teen, “I have another history essay to write though, so I’m going to see if Adam can help me!” she added, as she climbed to stairs.
Charles hung his coat before making his way toward his wife.
“Hi you.”
Delia giggled, “Hi.”
He kissed her lips and sat next to her, resting one of his hand above hers.
“How are you?”
“Fine. I just can’t wait for this baby to come out.”
“You and me both!” chuckled Charles, rubbing her stomach gently. “You didn’t feel anything that could indicate that labor was going to start soon?”
Delia sighed. She knew her husband was worried. Her due date was tomorrow.
“No. I mean my back is killing me but other than that nothing new.”
She rested her head on his shoulder, happy to have someone she could lean on, literally, to help her go through this exhausting journey. She had always wanted to be a mother. Her whish had never been so close to become reality.
****************
Later that night, all of them were watching TV. Adam and Barbara cuddling on one end of the couch, Delia and Charles on the other. Beetlejuice and Lydia were seating on the floor, munching on some pop-corn.
The weird feeling that Delia had felt in her back all day was getting worse. Pain was coming and going and she was started to ask herself if this was it. But she didn’t say anything, not wanting an unnecessary trip to the hospital. Plus, the she knew that she shouldn’t be worried about going to the hospital unless her water broke. The pain was probably nothing.
Suddenly, a sharp pain traveled through her stomach. That was new. She couldn’t help the small noise that escaped her. Immediately the five other people in the room fixed their eyes on her. Charles’s arm tightened slightly around her,
“Delia? Are you alright?”
“Yes! I’m fine. Sorry! I think I’m just going to go lay down a little bit.”
With the help of her husband she got up from the couch. She was at the base of the stairs when another pain ripped through her mi-section. But she managed to stay quiet. She began to painfully climb the stairs. Stairs shouldn’t even exist when you’re pregnant.
She finally arrived at the top. She paused for a moment. No pain. Good. Maybe she just needed to move a bit. Delia hesitated before deciding on taking a shower. She entered into the bathroom and quickly took her dress off before stepping under the warm water. Yes. That was definitely great.
“Oh god!” she couldn’t prevent the words from coming out as another pain took over.
She took a deep breath. These were definitely contractions. Delia thought about calling Charles, but decided against it. A quick shower couldn’t hurt. She was in the early stage of labor and she probably had at least a few hours before the baby showed up.
“And my water didn’t break yet.” She voiced out loud.
And that’s exactly when her water broke. The liquid came down in one big splash. Okay. So now they needed to go to the hospital. As fast as she could, everything seemed to take more time with a stomach the seize of a big watermelon, Delia finished her shower. Good thing she was actually in the shower when that happened. She quickly put a clean dress on and wobbled back downstairs. She was only five steps away from her goal when another contraction took over.
At her cry of pain, Charles immediately run at her side.
“Delia what’s going on?” he asked, trying to stay calm as he started to panic.
“My water broke. We need to go to the hospital.”
Silence followed her words and then… chaos. Charles panicked completely searching for the car keys as Lydia bolted upstairs to get the bags they had prepared. Adam and Barbara helped her get to the front door and Beetlejuice stayed rooted on the floor, looking at the life coach with wide eyes.
At one point they finally managed to get to car. Lydia decided to stay with the Maitlands. She would meet her sibling once they were born. Delia watched them wave as Charles started the car, taking them to the nearest hospital.
Delia focused on her breathing. The contractions were stronger now. God, that ten minutes’ drive was going to be a painful one. Next to her, Charles was pale, gripping the wheel with so much force that his knuckles were white. he broke the silence,
“Are you alright? You seem pretty calm.”
“I’m terrified.” Muttered Delia.
It seemed as if she only truly realized now that they were going to have a baby. She was going to give birth to an actual human being. That was crazy. And she was terrified.
Charles chuckled, “Yeah me too. But everything is going to be fine. You’re going to be an amazing mother Delia.”
“And you’re going to be an amazing father. You already are.”
They finally arrived at the hospital and they were immediately taken to a delivery room; ready to finally met the human they created.
*******************
11 hours. Delia had been in labor for the last 11 hours. She was red and sweaty, pushing the best she could. Charles was next to her, supporting her head and murmuring words of encouragement in her ear.
“Come on Mrs. Deetz! Once last push and this baby should be out.”
The life coach took a deep breath and pushed with all her might. And the baby came out.
“Good job!” exclaimed the mid-wife, putting the little human on her mother’s chest. “It’s a girl.”
Delia let out a cry of joy, tears in her eyes. She had done it. They had a daughter. She turned toward her husband,
“A girl Charles! We have a daughter!”
“Yes, we do.” Muttered Charles, his vision blurry because of his tears.
He leaned down, pressing a kiss on Delia’s forehead.
The mid wives took their daughter back so that they could wash her properly.
A few hours later, after a phone call to the house to announce the good news to the others, Charles was seated in the hospital chair by Delia’s bed, their precious little bundled in his arms.
“We’re so happy your finally here little one.” He cooed gently, “Your mother is very tired,” he looked up at Delia who was fast asleep, “She’s an amazing woman, you’ll see. Her name’s Delia, but you’re probably going to call her mom. I’m Charles, your dad.”
He paused for a moment, “I’m very happy you’re here. I already have a daughter, Lydia. She’s going to be an amazing big sister. I made a lot of mistakes with her. I’m probably going to make a lot of mistake with you too. But I promise to do my best to be here for you when you need me. I just hope… you’ll let me in.”
Charles was surprised to see his daughter opening her eyes. They were big, blue eyes. But he could already see specks of brown in them. She was going to have the same eyes as her mother. Charles gently stroked her cheek with one of his fingers. Yes. Everything was going to be fine.
*********************
Three days later, Delia and her daughter were finally able to go home. The moment they arrived home, Barbara, Adam and Beetlejuice rushed to meet the new addition to the family.
“Oh, Delia, she’s beautiful.” Said Barbara watching the baby taking her new surroundings in.
“She really is. Congratulations to you both.” Added Adam.
“Why is she all red and wrinkly?” asked Beetlejuice
Charles chuckled, “She was born only three days ago. It’s going to take a few days for her skin to be normal.”
“Come on! Tell us her name!” said Lydia impatiently.
The teenager had already met her sister when she visited them at the hospital two days ago.
“Hey true! You never told us her name!” exclaimed Adam.
Delia and Charles looked at each other.
“Everyone,” began Delia, “meet Olivia, Emily, Barbara Deetz.”
She immediately saw Barbara’s eyes filled with tears.
“You… You named her after me?” the ghost quietly asked.
“Yes. I mean you help us a lot. Around the house, with Lydia and you helped Delia during the pregnancy. It just… felt right.” Said Charles gently.
“I... I don’t know what to say!” Barbara gave a watery-chuckle, a huge smile on her face, “Can I hold her?”
“Of course.”
Delia carefully transferred her daughter into the blonde’s arms, making sure that Barbara could actually hold her despite being a ghost, before letting go of the baby.
“Hi Olivia. I’m Barbara” muttered the dead woman, her eyes fixed on the little girl in her arms.
Delia watched with amazement as each members of her family gathered around Barbara to meet Olivia. Charles wrapped an arm around her shoulders bringing his wife closer to him. The life coach smiled; she finally had a family. She was happier than she had ever been.
