Prompt – Lights Characters – David/Kyle Word Count – 475
Notes – hmmmm a thing for winter because I’m developing my David. This is for the @spdrabblebomb winter list of prompts, which have been super fun to write about.
“So, you go out there every year?” Kyle slurps on his Diet Coke, being purposefully loud.   David shrugs. He scratches his pencil against the edge of the napkin. “Not every year. Just when I can. I like looking at the lights.”   Kyle slurps again. His cup is actually mostly empty. He tries to casually lean across the table, but David easily moves his arm and covers up the doodle. “You going this year?”   “I…might?” David shrugs. He crumples the napkin up, wedges it under the chipped glass plate he’s eating off of. “Why?”   “Could I come with you?”   “What?”   “Like, dude, we should go look at the lights together.” Kyle grins, crooked and nervous. His fingers tap absently against the table top.   David uses the nib of his pencil to poke at the wadded up napkin. After a moment, he nods. “Yeah, okay. We can do that.”
Kyle pays for both of their bus tickets, despite how much David insists that he doesn’t have too. They stand close together on the ride there, bundled up with too many layers, gloved hands twisted together in a hold that still feels new.   Peach Creek puts on a festival of lights every year, where the square at the center of the town is all trussed up with lights, and the surrounding blocks decorate all of their shops and buildings for the holidays. It takes an hour and a half to get there and Kyle’s feet are already aching by the time that he steps off the bus, but he’s kind of excited, anyway, because for all of the years that he’s lived in South Park, this is one of those trips that he’s always heard about and never made.   David keeps grinning, all chapped lips with a fading bruise around his left eye. “Do you, ah, want to get hot chocolate?”   “Sure.” Kyle squeezes his hand. “Lead the way, dude.”
David ends up paying for the hot chocolate, but only because he’s quicker getting his wallet out. Klye gets an original with marshmallows on top, and David orders a cup of gingerbread hot chocolate, and they end up sitting under a brightly lit gazebo while they drink it.   There’s green garland wrapped around the poles and lights strung up from the ceiling. People are mingling around outside and Kyle scoots closer to David than really needed, too nervous still to do anything more than rest his cheek against David’s messy black hair.   There’s whipped cream on David’s lip when he tilts his head back, though, not nearly as nervous as Kyle and when he kisses Kyle on the cheek, it’s sticky sweet and warm.
