HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION:
You are driving on a US town road. It is 8:26 AM and no one else is around. You are cruising roughly 38 down a 2-lane (one Northbound lane, one Southbound lane) road labeled with a speed limit of 35 MPH. A driver speeding noticeably faster than you drives right up onto your tail, sits there for about 15 seconds tailgating you, then crosses the solid double-yellow line to pass you. This action is a violation of traffic laws. The driver speeds off, and you continue to drive your same speed. About one US minute later, you catch up to the driver at a red light. No one else is here except you two. Amused at the irony, you decide give your horn two short beeps the second the traffic light turns green; faking annoyance at the other drivers “reaction time” to the traffic light change. The other driver speeds off, and you resume your previous cruising speed of 38MPH in a 35MPH zone.

Killing of Moriah Wilson
A Timeline of events
May 10
Moriah Wilson arrives in Austin, Texas, ahead of Gravel Locos held on May 14 in Hico, located between Austin and Dallas. A woman who resides at Maple Ave and a friend of Wilson's, picks her up from the airport.
May 11
5:30 pm - The friend, who is referenced as ‘the caller’ in the warrants, leaves her residence at Maple Ave. She receives a text message from Wilson stating that she was going to meet up with a friend named 'Colin,' later fully identified by officers as Colin Strickland, to go swimming.
As the friend left the residence she observed a large bicycle travel bag sitting next to the front door on an elevated porch, and advised Wilson to take the bag inside the house before she leaves so no one steals it.
5:45 pm - 5:55 pm: Wilson leaves the residence at Maple Ave to swim with Strickland at the Deep Eddy Municipal Pool in Austin.
Strickland said he picked up Wilson at Maple Ave at 5:45 pm. After swimming, they go to Pool Burger to eat. Strickland said that he picked Wilson up on his motorcycle.
8:16 pm - Strickland and Wilson leave the parking lot of Pool Burger on Strickland's motorcycle, according to a surveillance video timeline
8:26 pm - A vehicle believed to be Armstrong’s drives northbound on Maple Ave and then westbound on East 18th St, according to a surveillance video timeline
8:35 pm -  Strickland drops Wilson off at the Maple Ave residence and then drives northbound through the alleyway, north of East 18th St, on his motorcycle, according to a surveillance video timeline
In an interview with detectives on May 12, Strickland said he did not go inside the Maple Ave residence.
8:36 pm: Wilson goes inside using a unique electronic code to open the door of the Maple Ave residence.
8:37 pm: A black SUV, believed to be Armstrong's, is observed travelling toward and then slowing down near the Maple Ave residence via cameras located on the back of the residence of East 18th Street. The black SUV appeared to have a foldable rear bicycle rack and a roof luggage rack and appeared to have chrome around the windows.
No other vehicles were observed on the video surveillance passing until marked emergency vehicles arrived.
Approximately 8:48 pm - Strickland drives southbound in the 4900 block of S I-35 SB frontage road, approximately 8 miles from the Maple Ave residence, according to surveillance video timeline. He returns to the Fort Clark Drive residence, driving his motorcycle, where he and Armstrong reside.
In the May 12 interview with detectives, Strickland said that he sent Armstrong three unanswered text messages upon leaving the Maple Ave residence on May 11; 8:36 pm where the author of the affidavit noted that, in the message, Strickland was not honest about his whereabouts to Armstrong to hide that he was out with Wilson , followed by messages sent at approximately 8:43 pm  and at 9:21 pm.
9:21 pm - Strickland is working on his bicycles in the garage for the upcoming race, when Armstrong returns to the Fort Clark Drive residence driving a black SUV.
9:54 pm: Wilson’s friend returns home to her residence at Maple Ave. She noticed the door was unlocked. The friend also observed the large bicycle travel bag at the bottom of the stairs, partially blocking the carport.
9:56 pm - Wilson’s friend calls 9-1-1 and reports Wilson is unresponsive on the bathroom floor. The friend performed CPR.
APD Crime Scene Specialists located three fire cartridge cases on the floor near Wilson, with "9mm-JAG" imprinted on the head stamp. However, a firearm was not immediately observed.
The friend also reports that Wilson’s bike appeared to be stolen. Officer’s checked the location and found Wilson’s bicycle approximately 68ft south of the Maple Ave residence concealed in thick bamboo.
10:10 pm - First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but Wilson was pronounced deceased by a doctor.
May 12 - Police question Strickland and Armstrong, search residence
APD officers conducted surveillance at the residence of Armstrong and Strickland located at Fort Clark Drive. Police saw Armstrong entering and exiting the 2012 black Jeep that appeared to be the vehicle observed in the surveillance footage at the Maple Ave residence.
A 2002 BMW motorcycle and a 1998 Mercedes were also in the driveway, believed to belong to Strickland. He said that he does not drive the Jeep, and that only Armstrong drives the Jeep.
9:20 am - Police make contact with Strickland.
They write, "Strickland originally acted as though he did not know who Wilson was but eventually admitted to knowing her.”
Strickland voluntarily drove his vehicle to the Austin Police Department Homicide Office for a formal interview and he was advised that he was free to leave at any time.
Strickland is not accused or charged in this crime and the affidavit (5) states that he has cooperated fully in the investigation
During the interview, Strickland advised that he knew Wilson and that they "briefly had a romantic relationship in the fall of 2021".
He said that he currently lives with his girlfriend Armstrong. He said they had been dating for approximately three years but briefly ended their relationship for one or two weeks in October 2021. During the break-up, he said he met Wilson. Strickland said he and Wilson had a romantic relationship before he ultimately began dating Armstrong again.
Strickland advised that while he and Wilson were dating, Armstrong called Wilson on the phone, telling Wilson that she was the one dating Strickland.
Throughout the interview, Strickland told detectives he had to "change Wilson's name in his phone, so Armstrong does not know who he is speaking to." He also advised that he has had to delete text messages on his phone to prevent Armstrong from finding them,
Strickland also advised that he had to change Wilson’s name in his phone because Armstrong blocked Wilson’s name in his phone.
In the interview, he said he owned a 9mm handgun that he purchased at McBride's gun store in Austin. He said he usually kept it inside a case inside the Fort Clark Drive residence but that he has never shot the gun. Strickland also told [Detective] that a second firearm, a 9mm handgun purchased at McBride's gun store, belonged to Armstrong and was inside the residence.
Strickland said he purchased both firearms between December 2021 and January 2022  Strickland said he purchased a Springfield Armory handgun for himself and a Sig Sauer handgun for Armstrong.
Police recover a weapon
Upon executing a search warrant, police locate the two firearms at the Fort Clark Drive residence. They also located two phones, one plugged in on the counter and one inside a purse, and a US passport belonging to Armstrong.
After the search was complete, Armstrong was told her cell phones were being collected for evidence, and she asked how detectives would get into contact with her then, confirming detectives' belief the phones located inside belonged to Armstrong.
Detectives learned through this interview that Armstrong owned property located at Manchester Circle and issued a warrant to search the property for any evidence related to the homicide investigation.
Police question Kaitlin Armstrong after which she leaves
[Authorities] discovered that Armstrong had an outstanding class B warrant for her arrest. [Authorities] then located and apprehended Armstrong and transported her to the Austin Police Department Homicide Unit where she was briefly detained and questioned. However, during the interview it was relayed to detectives that the class B warrant was not valid and that she was free to leave, according to the affidavit.
An APD detective later stated in a news conference on Tuesday, May 24 that Armstrong was released due to a date-of-birth discrepancy in the files and the class B warrant.
May 13 - Last known contact with Armstrong.
Strickland advised authorities that he has not spoken with Armstrong since May 13.
Also on this date, Police contacted Wilson's friend, who was fully identified in an APD report, and referred to by the pseudonym "Jane". She provided information on the condition she would remain anonymous. She said the last time Armstrong called Wilson, Armstrong told Wilson she was with Strickland and Wilson needed to "stay away from him."
May 13 - Armstrong sold black SUV for $12,200
(reports on June 23) U.S. Marshals locate the black SUV that was registered to homicide suspect Armstrong. Investigators with the task force learned that Armstrong sold the vehicle May 13 to a CarMax dealership in south Austin for $12,200 dollars. Armstrong was provided a check from the dealership a day after being questioned by Austin authorities.
May 14 - An anonymous tipster gives possible motive
According to the author of affidavit, an anonymous caller leaves a tip saying she was with Armstrong in January 2022, that Armstrong had just discovered Strickland had a romantic relationship with Wilson. “The caller advised Armstrong became furious and was shaking in anger. Armstrong told the caller Armstrong was so angry Armstrong wanted to kill Wilson. Armstrong then proceeded to tell the caller Armstrong had either recently purchased a firearm or was going to."
May 14 - U.S. Marshals believe Armstrong has fled to New York
(reports on May 25) U.S. Marshals believe that Armstrong may have fled by airplane to New York. Investigators believe Armstrong was at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on May 14 at 12:30 pm. U.S. Marshals believe that Armstrong then boarded a flight to Houston Hobby Airport followed by a connecting flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York.
Deputy US Marshal tells Cyclingnews that Armstrong could be anywhere, “What is she capable of doing now? We don’t know. All we can do is follow her trail and hope to catch up with her.”
May 15 - Police obtain video footage showing a vehicle near the scene
Detectives canvas for video surveillance footage in the Maple Ave area. The property owner of the Maple Ave residence, who also lives on the property and rents out an apartment to Wilson’s friend, tells police that on May 11, 2022, between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm, he walked into his garage and partially raised his garage door and then heard what he described as someone running down the stairs that lead to the Maple Ave apartment’s front door, and observes a bicycle travel southbound through the alleyway from the apartment.”
May 17 - Police get ballistics results on weapon recovered from Armstrong’s residence
Police ballistic tests on the Sig Sauer recovered from the Fort Clark Drive residence show “the potential that the same firearm was involved [in Wilson’s shooting] is significant.”
May 17 - Police issue arrest warrant for Armstrong
10:40 pm - The APD department issued an arrest warrant in connection to the case, naming Armstrong as wanted on first-degree felony murder charges. It was signed by a Judge through the City of Austin Municipal Court - District Court of Travis County and filed on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
May 18 - U.S. Marshals believe Armstrong travelled to and was dropped off at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey
(reports on June 6) U.S. Marshals learned new information that suggests Armstrong was dropped off at the Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on May 18, a day after APD obtained a warrant for her arrest. They offer a $5,000 reward for any information regarding the whereabouts of Armstrong, that would lead to her capture, and upgraded the investigation to ‘major case' status.
May 18 -  Armstrong uses fraudulent passport to flee to Costa Rica
(reports on June 30) U.S. Marshals-led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations discovered that Armstrong fraudulently used someone else's passport to board United Airlines Flight 1222 from Newark International Airport at 5:09 p.m. EST on May 18, arriving in San Jose, Costa Rica, at 8:27 p.m. EST the same day.
May 20 - Strickland makes a statement, Armstrong named as a fugitive
2:26 pm - Colin Strickland released a statement posted to social media by a KVUE Austin investigative journalist. Strickland insisted his relationship with Wilson was "platonic and professional," writing, "There is no way to adequately express the regret and torture I feel about my proximity to this horrible crime." Strickland admitted to having a week-long romantic relationship with Wilson late last year at a time when he and Armstrong had broken up.
7:51 pm - US Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force requests the public's help in locating homicide suspect Armstrong. The task force is actively conducting a fugitive investigation and pursuing leads on the whereabouts of Armstrong.
June 29 - Armstrong is captured in Costa Rica
Authorities confirm that they located and apprehended Armstrong in Costa Rica. The 43-day fugitive investigation ended at Santa Teresa Beach hostel in Costa Rica after U.S. Marshals Office of International Operations, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, working with authorities in Costa Rica, located and arrested Armstrong on June 29 at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas.
Authorities confirmed that Armstrong had fraudulently used a passport to board a flight to Costa Rica.
According to an Inside Edition report, two passports were located in a locker at the Santa Teresa Beach hostel after Armstrong's arrest. One belonged to Armstrong, and the other belonged to a family member. A $6,350 receipt for cosmetic surgery was also found in the locker under another name.
Authorities confirmed that Armstrong had changed her physical appearance by cutting and changing her hair colour to dark brown.
July 2 - Authorities return Kaitlin Armstrong to US after arrest in Costa Rica
Authorities in Costa Rica return Armstrong to the US where she faces first-degree murder charges in connection to the shooting death of Wilson. She is held in Harris County Jail located in the Houston area, Texas, awaiting extradition to Austin.
ABC 13 Houston captured exclusive video footage (opens in new tab) of authorities escorting Armstrong through the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Armstrong kept her head down and her hair covering her face, and remained silent when questioned about her involvement in the homicide investigation.
July 5 - Kaitlin Armstrong extradited to Austin jail, formally arrested on first-degree murder felony charges and held with bond set at $3.5 million
Authorities extradited Armstrong from the Harris County jail in Houston to the Travis County Jail in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, July 5. Armstrong is held with a bond set at $3.5 million, confirmed the City of Austin Police Department in a statement sent to Cyclingnews.
APD confirmed that Armstrong was formally arrested on first-degree murder felony charges in connection with the shooting death of Moriah Wilson (opens in new tab) on May 11 in Austin. Authorities also booked her on Theft of Service charges.

Monday 18 November 2002 - second visit to Munich - Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt - the perfect Schwibbogen - Schäufele at the Tucher gastropub
18 November 2002
EN  Hi everyone.  Twenty years ago I was still on my vacation to Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland.  This would be my last full day.  I visited Munich, particularly Europapark, then the Marienplatz downtown.  I did not spend long there, I went back to Nürnberg and did my remaining shopping.  Then I packed up to go home on the 19th.
Guten Morgen!  Good morning!
Today would be my last full day in Europe until August 2003.  I would visit Munich, and then come back to Nürnberg to do some final shopping before going back to the hotel.  I would find the perfect gift for my mother, in the Handwerkerhof.
I managed to arrive at the hotel the previous evening at a more decent hour so I could wake up by 7 AM.  I had breakfast, then took a shower and took the U1 to Nürnberg Hbf.  I boarded the ICE train to Munich Hbf via Augsburg.  So far it was the only ICE connection until years later when it went through Donauwörth and Ingolstadt.  The train left about 8 AM, and made a stop about 8:35 AM in Augsburg Hbf.  Then it continued to München Hbf.  I was listening to the radio and happened to tune in Bayern 3.  It was playing "Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly.  I cannot remember the other songs though, will have to refer to the audio tape which I had recorded at the time.
At München Hbf I accidentally dropped my radio.  It did not completely break it but the hinge for the cassette would not completely close unless I jiggled it a bit.  It was a misfortune.  I went on to the U1-U2 station, bought a day pass, and took the U2 to the Am Hart station.  I took a shuttle bus for the V Markt, or rather, the Walmart, which had replaced it.  I used to go there a few times a week after work when I was living there in Summers of 1997 and 1998.  Prices were cheaper than in downtown, especially for food.  I bought a couple of beers to take home.  Then I took the shuttle to Kieferngarten, the other stop with a U Bahn connection.  I took it southbound to Marienplatz, through Münchner Freiheit that converges with the M3 that came from the west, namely Olympiazentrum which eventually was extended to Moosach.
I walked to the Viktualienmarkt and the Rathaus at Marienplatz.  I also walked towards the Karlsplatz past the St. Michael church.  I had been there in the winter when there was snow, months before.  I did not go to the Hofbrauhaus until at least August 2003, so this time I just took the S Bahn back to Hbf and tried to find a train back to Nürnberg through Augsburg.  At München Hbf, I took a 1:51 PM train to Nürnberg Hbf through Augsburg.  I arrived about 3 PM.
In Nürnberg, I walked from Lorenzkirche to Weißer Turm and back.  At one department store, I think, Hertie, I was at the World of Music, and listened to two CDs that I thought I should buy.  One was the follow up CD Unbelievable by Sarah Connor.  Months earlier, in Sevilla, Spain, I had bought her debut CD "Green Eyed Soul".  I passed on that sadly.  Another one was Otto Waalkes in concert.  One of his songs was a parody of Toto's "Africa", called "Arschgesicht".  That cracked me up.
I had to find something for my mother, and the time was getting short.  4 PM on a November afternoon is not exactly late, but if one is flying home the next day, it is better to find something to buy earlier than later.  I went to the Handwerkerhof and found a shop that sold Schwibbogen.  I found one powered by candles.  I asked the saleslady to put it in a box, and she had the exact box to pack it in.  I think it cost around € 30,00.  I bought similar presents in that area, even a bottle of Frankish wine in a distinctive bottle, which is kind of flat, not the usual cylindrical type.  Also I bought some delicious Lebkuchen to take back home.  I also bought some candies for my colleagues at work to enjoy.
For supper, I went to the Tucher Mautkeller on Königstraße, towards Lorenzkirche.  I had to go one flight of stairs down.  I had a Schäufele, which was a pork shoulder, cole slaw and potato dumpling.  I had it with glass of Tucher Dunkel.  It was excellent.  I paid about € 30 for the meal.
I walked back to Hbf and took the U1 back to Maximilianstraße, the bus 38 to Lenkersheimer Straße, and back to the hotel.  I had to pack up my bags to see where I could put my beers, the Schwibbogen, wine and other things.  Then I went to sleep.
I hope you will join me on my long journey home, through Washington DC Dulles and an unexpected "change of gauge", and a movie with shouts of "Jiggance!" from Portia de Rossi.
Gute Nacht!  Good night!

California’s I-5 Shaken by Tragic 17 car 18 Big Rig Vehicle Collision: Two Lives Lost, Nine Hospitalized
In a devastating incident on Saturday, a staggering 35-vehicle pile-up unfolded on Interstate 5 in central California, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving at least nine individuals hospitalized, according to authorities.
The calamity occurred on the southbound side of the highway in Bakersfield, with dense fog believed to be the primary catalyst, as reported by BakersfieldNow.com. The collision involved a total of 17 vehicles and 18 large trucks, leaving a harrowing scene of destruction in its wake.
Haunting images of the aftermath showcased mangled tractor-trailers, one of which was left precariously tipped over on its side, while a white pickup truck was tragically crushed between two rigs. The cargo boxes were shattered, with their contents strewn across the highway in a chaotic display.
A witness, who was traveling on the northbound side of I-5, expressed their shock, stating, "I just witnessed the biggest, scariest accident of my life," on X.
Manny Garcia, a spokesperson for the California Highway Police in Buttonwillow, anticipated that the extensive damage caused by the collision would necessitate the closure of a significant portion of the highway for the remainder of the day.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has initiated an investigation into the accident, aiming to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

The Ledge #587: Third Quarter Report
The end of every quarter is a time to take a little look back at the last three months of new music. Tonight I present a little over two hours of the records that caught my attention during that period. There are returning legends (Graham Parker, Lucinda Williams, The Pretenders) who are sort of shockingly as great as ever. There are workhorses (Guided By Voices, The William Loveday Intention) that seem to have new tunes in every quarterly recap. There's an archive project that is clearly a label of love for the family of Sparklehorse's Mark Linkhouse. And, of course, there are sets devoted to our friends at Big Stir Records and Rum Bar Records, along with a nice heaping of new bands (or new to me, at least) that caught my attention.
As for the "52 Weeks Of Teenage Kicks", I have a fun live version that I recently found on Bandcamp. Guitarist Davey Lane is in the current lineup of Australian greats You Am I, and he apparently got the gig after recording and touring with You Am I leader Tim Rogers in the late 90's. Since it is the third quarter recap, I'm also giving another spin to the fabulous version submitted by members of Popular Creeps and The Stick Arounds, under the name The Creep Arounds.
As I do every week, I must again plead with y'all for more versions of "Teenage Kicks". If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me!

US DOL - The de Moya Group - Safety Violations
Tumblr media
U.S. Department of Labor Finds The de Moya Group Could Have Prevented Fatal, Serious Injuries After Concrete Pile Struck Aerial Lift Over I-95 in 2022. A bridge construction contractor, The de Moya Group, Inc., exposed workers to struck-by hazards from an unstable crane. MIAMI, FL (STL.News) One worker died, and a second needed a month’s hospitalization for a serious leg fracture after falling 35 feet when a suspended concrete pile struck the aerial lift in which they worked in December 2022.  U.S. Department of Labor investigators determined their employer, The de Moya Group Inc. of Miami, could have prevented the tragedy by following federal workplace safety standards. Investigators with the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration learned that a 90-foot long, 18- by 18-inch concrete pile weighing 35,000 pounds broke free of its restraints when the supporting crane shifted in unstable soil and then struck the lift’s boom, causing the two carpenters to fall onto the roadway below.  A 46-year-old worker suffered fatal injuries while his 52-year-old co-worker sustained serious leg injuries. The incident occurred as the employees worked to expand a bridge along the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 between Sunrise and Broward in Fort Lauderdale as part of a major Florida Department of Transportation infrastructure project. OSHA issued citations for four serious violations to The de Moya Group, a highway and bridge construction company specializing in complex major infrastructure projects in Florida, for exposing employees to struck-by hazards by not complying with federal safety standards as follows: - Failing to ensure the ground was firm and that the crane had adequate support. - Using a crane with a modified swing control exposes employees to the hazard of being struck by the crane or load. - Not completing monthly crane inspections as required. “This tragedy never should have happened.  A worker lost his life, and a co-worker suffered life-altering injuries because The de Moya Group failed to follow industry-recognized and federally required safety measures,” said OSHA Area Office Director Condell Eastmond in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  “Employers should use this tragic incident as a reminder to review their workplace safety practices and give their workers every opportunity to return to their families at the end of each workday safely.” In addition, OSHA issued the company an other-than-serious citation for using a crane with a broken load indicator and for not making certain that modified crane operating controls did not affect its safe operation.  The agency proposed $58,942 in penalties, an amount set by federal statute. Founded in 1986, the family-owned and operated company had 30 workers at the worksite and employs about 230 workers. SOURCE: U.S. Department of Safety Read the full article

Looking at the Old Railroads: Illinois Railway Museum, Labor Day 2022 -- “Night Train” weekend, with extended hours for viewing after 6 PM.
Here: views seen along the way, mostly of clouds - ‘cause I like me some clouds.
The idea was pretty simple, really: drive up on Saturday afternoon, see the museum during the evening, and stay overnight locally -- with an eye to shooting Sunday morning with the sunlight from the southeast rather than the southwest.  Looking at one of last year’s Labor Day posts, I read my intention then: get shots of the trains “on the road” so that their illumination would be better on the front end.

Bultington’s Zypher and Frisco 1630 in 2021: the light from the afternoon sun is pretty, but leaves the front end in shadow.
Sadly, Labor Day weekend the skies over northern Illinois remained, in the main, overcast; the ambient temperatures were pleasant, and the forecast may have kept large crowds away, but it did nothing much for the photographs.
During the drives however, there were plenty of amazing scenes among those clouds which kept my attention.
Tumblr media
Looking southwest-ish: passing out from under the gray near Piper City, Illinois.
Leaving Lafayette under gray skies, I passed out from under a cloud mass on the way west in Illinois -- but could see far to the north what looked very much like the source of rain in the Rockford area.  I was right.
Tumblr media
Near Weston, looking north: storm clouds on the horizon beyond, appropriately, a rail crossing.
As I drove west toward Interstate 39, that substantial system remained nearly stationary up there on the horizon.  As the crow flies, the outer edges were about 70 or 80 miles north, and the rainy middle another 20-ish miles onward from that -- pretty-muchly a swirling mass centered over Rockford and Belvidere: exactly where I was headed.
Tumblr media
Yep, storm system’s still there: looking north along I-39.
A few other things did take my attention besides clouds, like the “Used to be a...” well, it used to be something fast food, but I don’t know what; in El Paso near I-39:

an office park building with a particular name:

as well as a lucky shot of a towboat under way on the Illinois River near La Salle:

But mostly I was watching the skies, and not for UFOs, or UAPs, or what-ever they’re called these days.
Tumblr media
56 miles to Rockford, and the edge of the system is near.
Tumblr media
Rest area, about 35 miles out, and well under the outer edges of the clouds.
About twenty miles outside Rockford, the skies went thick and dark with the storms:
Tumblr media
and as I ran up the east side of town on the way to the motor lodge, I ran squarely under a band of heavy rain.  Fortunately, after checking in and getting a late lunch, the rain stopped and the worst storminess quit.  Clouds remained, though, and I would see but little sunlight until on the run back south.
Tumblr media
The storms moving -- very slowly -- to the southeast, as seen looking south along U.S. 20 Business on the north side of Belvidere.
The drive back looked like it would be as gray as Sunday in Union, but the clouds broke into myriad flotillas as I went south, giving me plenty to look at as the miles slid by.
Tumblr media
Looking east from I-39 southbound.

Above and below: two views from just west of Chenoa, again with the appropriate rail road trackage:

In Chenoa was a sign (above) for the Chenoa Family Restaurant -- which is bent -- and I just gotta’ wonder: how the hell do you bend a sign when it’s 80 feet in the air?!  (Below) the Watseka water tower against yet another pile of clouds:
Tumblr media
And just when I thought “O.K., that’s enough already,” I just had to pull the camera out again.

Probably the first video showing the southbound drive across the new bridge over the Susquehanna River. The Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway (CSVT), also known as the Central Susquehanna Valley Transportation Project, is an under construction highway bypass along the U.S. Route 15 (US 15) corridor between Shamokin Dam and Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. This video covers Phase I, opened on July 8, 2022, which saw the rerouting of PA Route 147 onto a new bridge across the west branch of the Susquehanna River from Winfield to Chillisquaque. As part of this project, PA Route 147, which originally stayed on the east side of the river and served Sunbury and Northumberland, was rerouted to travel across the river with PA Route 61 to US Route 15 in Shamokin Dam. It then travels up US 15 to Winfield, where it diverges and crosses the river on this bridge, meeting up with its old alignment in Chillisquaque. The original routing of PA 147 was replaced by an extension of PA 405. This is Phase I in a two part project to plug a missing link in the four lane mostly limited access route between Harrisburg, PA and Corning, NY (and by extension, Baltimore, MD and Rochester, NY) through central Pennsylvania. Phase II, to be completed by 2027, will see US Route 15 rerouted off Susquehanna Trail onto a new divided highway alignment bypassing the strip, running directly from there to Winfield, where it will resume its current alignment running up the west bank of the river to service Lewisburg, West Milton and South Williamsport. ------------ Table of Contents: 0:00 Merging onto PA 147 from PA 45 at Montandon 1:35 Beginning of new PA 147 alignment (to the right is where the highway originally became a two lane road and met PA 405) 3:14 Ridge Road exit (for those coming from I-80 who need to get to PA 405) 4:14 Central Susquehanna Bridge 5:20 Leaving the bridge, arriving in Winfield 5:58 Exiting the new alignment 6:39 Merging onto US Route 15 9:42 Arriving into Shamokin Dam --------------- If you like my videos, consider joining this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcXq_uoAGafTEoT5FTS2eNQ/join
