Trying to finish something I was supposed to do ages ago--spinning a contrast color for this sock yarn. The fleece (southdown babydoll) had a pretty wide range of grays, most of which I blended together. But I intentionally left the darkest gray out of the mix so that later I could spin up just that, and have a dark gray for the toe and heel. So, now I'm doing that.
One thing I did not realize until now (due to intentionally avoiding working with the darker gray locks) is that they are all much shorter than the other colors of gray, and a lot of them are way finer too. That's not ideal, so I might not use it for the toe--it won't be as hard-wearing of a yarn and the toe/ball of the foot is what wears out the fastest on my socks by far, so. It's fine though, I just want some kind of decorative element that uses the fact that this fleece had lots of nice colors.
I'm also not that surprised, I guess. The longest locks were always the very light gray ones. Hard to know why without seeing the sheep though.
every time I get into processing a fleece from raw, I am simultaneously astonished at how much fiber is in a single lock, and flabbergasted at how an individual lock is a tiny bit of nothing at all. in equal measure.
And then I think about what it is home. Home is where, no matter where you come from or what you've been through, you're loved wholly and unconditionally,
without barriers, restrictions, judgments or expectations.
Home, it's the place where you find comfort and security, where you're always welcome, where you put down roots.
Home is where your loved ones are.
Home, it's the people you love.
And when I see the bonds they've forged in Whickber Street, I think maybe this street is actually their Southdowns cottage.
Wickber Street/The Bookshop is Southdowns Cottage
It's their Home.
Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where
… I come from
Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong
Too sick to do pretty much anything but also bored as hell. Been spinning the southdown flax blend on my espinner cause why not, nobody has ordered any and I can make more if they did.
It's a very interesting spin. I spun a sample before I put it up for sale to make sure it wasn't awful, which it's not; but it is difficult. Not sure I would have been able to spin it before I learnt how to spin flax. You gotta keep an eye on both components as you work, making sure you're not leaving the southdown behind or letting the flax bunch up. It's easy once you are used to it, but still different.
The espinner I got working a little better by seating the drive band correctly. Still not a fan of the fact that I'm not directly in control of the speed... on a wheel or spindle I often want to slow down or stop but it's a pain on the espinner and it leads to uneven yarn. These things are weird.
Anyway. Dont know what I'll do with it but it's nice to spin again. Have been having trouble using my supported spindles bc of my shoulders. I know there's a way to lay down where you can spin supported without shoulder pain; the issue is I can't lay in one position for very long bc then everything else hurts. And of course supported is what i switched to after wheel spinning was too painful, which i got into because drop spindling was too painful. Can you tell how upset I am that spinning is being slowly taken from me. Haha. Anyway. Glad for the espinner in this regard.
It's the time of year when all the shops are selling easter egg dye... so I had to try dyeing something else with it.
The fiber is Southdown, in two 50g pieces of combed top, and I'm trying to spin it for a pair of relatively thick socks (mostly as an experiment). I still need to practice handling the fiber so it doesn't start to felt while dyeing and washing - this one is still spinnable after fluffing it up a bit and predrafting, but it's noticeably compacted.
My brain just got stuck on the southdowns cottage and how they'd end up there
And honestly, there's this recurring theme of the bookshop getting destroyed or at the very least pretty messed up (S1 by burning down and S2 by getting raided by the demon army).
And while I love to theorise and imagine Muriel might take over the bookshop, I think that, if we're lucky enough to get to the soutdowns cottage, it might be at cost of the bookshop
Another point in favour of that theory might be the whole "You can't leave this bookshop" "Oh Crowley, nothing lasts forever" interaction, which would be incredible foreshadowing
While I meant to spin up my merino and sari silk blends, I need a break after the first braid. Since I have the drive band set up for my larger whorl, time for a sock spin. This is a braid of baby doll Southdown from one of my favorite dyers (Apothefaery). This is my first ply, but plan to fractal the rest.
