❝ jules! ❞ her name startles out him again, urgent, grateful, as he reaches to her. he gently grasps onto one of her forearms, like she might ground him. which she does — momentarily settling his staccato panic; ❝ y-you're okay, thank god. you're — upside down. shoot, did you know that? ❞ he squints up at her, dazed. ❝ or. no, hold on. i am, actually. ❞

leland sits up — undoubtedly a little too quickly — and sharp, starry colours pound behind his eyes. he groans, hand coming up to drag down his own face, down to the drying blood under his bruising nose — as he recalled the several step thrashing that eventually knocked him out. ❝ — totally good, ❞ he outright fabricates, with a half-hearted smile.

in the dim light, from a singular failing bulb above, he can finally make out julie's features. dirtied, a little roughed up, but okay. and for better or for worse, all he had to contend with was a busted nose; ❝ … shit, do you think this ruins my modelling career or what? ❞ his nervous joke is all he can do to steady his jumping nerves — to not completely and totally lose his mind, just now. brows furrow with a quiet concern; ❝ naw. though — i'm alright, really. did they hurt you at all? ❞ he shoots an uneasy look into the darkness; ❝ — what the hell is this place? ❞
