SOUTHERN TAMANDUA (Lesser Anteater) Tamandua tetradactyla ©Laura Quick The Southern tamandua is a medium-sized anteater with a prehensile tail, small eyes and ears, and a long snout. Their thick fur is pale yellow over most of the body. The tamandua consumes about 9,000 ants/termites/bees daily, eating a few hundred at a time from a variety of nests within its territory. Its very strong fore claws can be used to break insect nests or to defend itself. This one resides comfortably at the Los Angeles Zoo. Here's my finished tamandua. Tamanduas are smaller relatives of the giant anteater. They are semiarboreal and have partially prehensile tails. They give off a strong smell to mark their territory and are sometimes called "stinkers of the forest".🙊 They're also pretty clumsy when they move around which makes them fun to watch.
