death’s-head hawk-moth!

since tomorrow is halloween, i decided i wanted to get festive and discuss the death’s-head hawk-moth! known for it’s appearance in silence of the lambs, the moth is an omen for death.

location/migration: 

the death’s-head hawk-moth resides in southern europe, africa, and the middle east. although it enjoys its home because of the warm weather, it’s known to be a constant traveler. it migrates north, one of the well-known places it migrates to is the united kingdom. you may encounter it during your halloween festivities, since adult moths can be found between august and october!

caterpillar appetite:

what’s interesting about this moth is that, as a caterpillar, they can consume deadly nightshade! they are also seen consuming potatoes, and even raiding beehives for honey. you may even see caterpillars inside potato fields!

size/family

the death’s-head hawk-moth, also known for its scientific name, acherontia atropos, belongs in the hawk-moth family. the scientific name for the hawk-moth family is sphingidae. it’s rather large, with a wingspan range of 80 - 120mm.

fun facts:

despite the moth’s gothic appearance, it has the ability to squeak! one theory as to why they squeak is to confuse predators, so they can quickly escape by flying away. they can also squeak due to being caught off-guard.

the moth is also known to be a tormentor of king george the third. he discovered two large moths in his bedroom, causing a stir in court. countless theories suggested that someone had placed the moths to try to damage the mental health of the king, sabotaging his reign.
